Welcome to the team Feisty! Many people find that they are more successful if they put their own personal modifications onto the plan. If you don't deviate too much from how it is written, you should do fine. This is because everyone is different and while the plan is great, modifications (hopefully slight) are made based on everyone's individual life styles.

Hi I'm new to this team, I've started eating healthy and exercising and waiting on Dr.Johnson's book which I ordered from amazon. I have 45 pounds to lose, I've been stuck at my current weight and nothing seems to work. I did join a gym 2 weeks ago so I'm hoping that helps. The quality of my life really depends on this working, I'm a single mom and I've never been in such a bad place in my life. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thank you, that does help. Do you still get pretty good results by doing that? How many calories do you recommend for middle calorie days? Today is my first down day. I ate an hard boiled egg for breakfast, plan on having a Slim Fast high protein shake for Lunch and the same for dinner, and lots of water throughout the day. I should hit about 458 calories for the day. I think this evening at home will be my true test (my husband is not doing the diet). Thanks again for your suggestion!

Hello I am new to Alternate day dieting and am hoping this will work for me. I like that this diet does not deprive you of anything. I am a pretty picky eater so I am unable to stick to most diets. I have about 20 lbs I would like to lose. What I am thinking will be the most difficult, is doing down days on Friday or Saturdays. I don't cook on those days so we go out to eat. Any tips for me?

Welcome Sencha! Losing 12 pounds by May is not impossible, but different people have different metabolisms. I have found that the first time I did this diet (a few years back) I lost a lot of weight quickly, most of it water, but it was weight, and I averaged about 3 to 5 pounds per week, so yes, I do believe a 12 pound loss is possible, just be sure to be very strict with yourself and whatever you do...no cheating!

I'm new to sparks and Alternate Day.. Just started yesterday. First day was difficult, today is a free day but I'm trying to keep things reasonable. Decent filling breakfast. Hoping lunch will mainly be a heavy handed helping of veggies and some fruit. Dinner will be a splurge, hubby and I have a takeout and movie night planned, probably, Chinese or Thai

I'm also alternating 5 min workouts 5 times a day (just very small ones) and hoping to walk 30 mins a day 3 or 4 times a week. Drinking 3L of water per day every day, am I being overly ambitious when I hope to lose 12 or so lbs by May 11th (vacation starts)?

I'm trying to not set myself up for failure by worrying about a specific # or weight I'm trying to get to, yet it seems impossible to shut that off in my head.
Whelp here is to attempting something outside my comfort zone and reprogramming my thinking: It's the journey not the 12 lbs

For those of you who don't know me, I've been a member of the alternate day diet since 2009. Upon joining this team I saw results, and they were FANTASTIC! I had 63 pounds to lose, and sadly when I was only 20 pounds away from reaching my goal, I allowed "life" to step in and put all my hard work on the back burner.
emoticon
I have tried to do this diet on and off over the past couple of years and just find it too difficult to do without the support I get from Sparkpeople and this team. I am now approaching 50 (in a couple of years) and know that if getting in healthy shape and staying in healthy shape gets harder after the age of 40, I suppose it's probably even harder after the age of 50.
emoticon
Because I have allowed myself to overeat, become lazy and just not care, I not only have 52 pounds to lose (once again) but am now finding that my feet and ankles are beginning to swell and hurt by the end of the day. I am bloated all the time and at times have sharp pains in my knees. My back is sore, I have heartburn and indigestion most of the time, and my skin isn't even looking good anymore.
emoticon
I believe I can turn back the hands of time, repair a lot of the damage that I've done to my body through neglecting it, I just need to set my mind to achieving my goals. And with the help and support of my fellow Alternate dieters, I know all will be possible.
emoticon
I look forward to getting to know many of you!

Welcome Trinity! I wish you the best of luck on your weight loss. I visited your Spark page. Your majors of "Math and a Molecular Specialization in Biology and Chemistry" seems like a real good combination, but I'm guessing that you haven't done anything with it career-wise since you are home-schooling your kids. Well it definitely comes in handy with your home-schooling.

Hi I'm new here. I already do IF, but I saw this approach and thought I would try this and see if this works better as far as weight loss. Plus, I will monitor the other symptoms that I have and see when those go down as well. I hope this IF approach will be more successful.

Go to your Start Page. On the left side click Account/Email Preferences. On the Account tab, scroll down to "My Information" and uncheck the box labeled "Use Metric System" then save. Voila!
They've changed it but you still need a page.

hi folks!

i'm new to spark people and new to the alternate day diet, but it sounds good to me. i recently saw a bbc horizon documentary called 'eat fast live longer' and it looked like something i could definitely do. i have a lot of weight to lose, but i'm feeling hopeful that this might work.
i've decided to fast on 'down days' and just drink water and tea. i've done three fast days so far and have been surprised how easy it has been (though i haven't been around other people eating). on my 'up days' i haven't felt the need to hugely overeat so far. i'm mostly vegetarian, although i do occasionally eat fish.
a year and a half ago i did a half marathon (slowly but i finished and wasn't last!) but today i tried to run after not doing much exercise for a while and it was hard to run for four minutes straight. so i'm going to start again with a couch to 5k plan and see if i can get back into running too.
looking forward to us all encouraging each other in our weight loss. emoticon

P.S. How do I get my ticker to register in pounds not kgs? I don't have 91 kgs to lose!

Hi, I'm new! I have been JUDDDing since Jan. 11, so a month now. I have lost 12 pounds, and have 35 more to go. Today is a DD, and I still get pretty hungry before bed, so, I have been googling stuff like jimmy johns and schlotsky's for the last hour. I never end up eating what I think I will the next day though.
I came to so so I could start an online tracker, and was super surprised to see this team. Hollaaa!

Welcome to our newbies. I'm happy to see Madambizini back with us. Maybe together we can win our battles with our weight..
This plan does work. It works better for some than others. Like any diet you will lose more if you don't diviate from the plan. I have seen some dramatic weight losses but as hard as it is to lose, it's harder to maintain without gaining. Good luck and welcome..

Hi Everyone,

I lost 50 pounds about 5 years ago through the Zone Diet and have maintained 30 pounds of that loss. I gained 20 lbs after Rotator Cuff Surgery and I am trying to lose the rest of my remaining weight. The Zone Diet stopped working for me. I think my body was going into starvation mode and holding on to the fat. So, I bought the Alternate Day Diet Book and just started it Monday! I thought this diet might be the thing to trick your body into losing weight. What has everyone's experience been? I am interested to hear! emoticon

Just joining today. I have read up on the plan and see no downside to it. In the past I dabbled with Eat Stop Eat, but I kind of like having a little bit of calories on the down days. I'm going to explore the boards on this team to read more about people's experiences and strategies.

Good to have found this team!

Hi new people. I'm sorry I haven't been as active as I used to be but for sure I can tell you that this is the plan for me. The down days will make you less hungry on the up days. It's like you can say food does not rule me..welcome to the team. Post often, it helps

I too plan to do this for the rest of my life. I am fasting on Mon, Wed, and Fri. I find that I do not eat as much on the days I do eat. Many people here find this is true as well. I hope you keep coming back here to cheek in as we are one of the more active teams I have found on Spark.

Hi everyone! I started eating lc and ls last month and decided to transition to JUDDD at the beginning of this month :) I'm getting ready to do my 6th DD tomorrow and I'm aiming to hit around 400 calories on it. I've found that mini portions spread out every 1-2 hours works for keeping the hunger and headaches away for me. Can't wait to meet other people following JUDDD!

Good Luck CHRYSSAE ! I think that doing MWF down days is a good way to go. The weekends are always a challenge and by not having them as down days, your chances of success are much better.

Hi guys!

I just wanted to introduce myself... I the mum of two little boys and for the past 6 years struggle with my weight. Before pregnancy I was a healthy weight but always felt "fat". I struggled to motivate myself and even though I only need to lose 2 stone (or so) seem to be yo-yo dieting with no real result. When I first came across alternate day fasting I found it really interesting, especially for the health benefits. I have been experimenting for the last few weeks, and now do 3 Down Days (Monday-Wednesday-Friday). On a DD I have a cup-a-soup for lunch and the rest of the calories for dinner. I love the control on DDs and wish I was as good at Up Days..

Welcome new members. This really works but like any other plan it takes mindset. Don't let your diet mentality slip away from you when you get close to goal. Our minds want us to just do what feels good but when you do that you soon feel lousy because feel good usually means eating too much. Post often because being active on the team will help you stay on track..

Raspberry Ketones ( spelled it wrong before) are the latest diet craze. I normally don't do the craze things but a friend tried them with good results for carb cravings. It is actually supposed to help you burn more fat but lots of people say it helps with cravings. I really noticed a reduction in cravings when I began the optimized saffron. It is supposed to balance your serotonin levels so you don't go hunting for food to give you that emotional uplift. I was on it for 2 days when I noticed I was genuinely enjoying myself rather than just making a go of it.
I think I will keep the mood carefree for my husband and family and order from the 500 cals or less and maybe eat half for good measure. I don't want to take it all too seriously as I end up getting too regimented about things. I lean to the OCD side of the playing field so prolly better not to disrupt the pattern. I am planning to continue the 431 DD as long as I can so will prolly activate the SIRT1 gene just the same. I find I can stick to a strict reduction for just about six weeks before falling off so plan to go to about 25-30% on DD just around then. Right now I am heavier than my Synthroid dose is effective for so any loss is fantastic. Really, I am more interested in the health improvements from the diet but also know that my current weight puts strain on my system.

In His Strength and Grace,

Julie

Julie Rae, I'm thinking that you don't have that much of an appetite due to your stomach shrinking (not much in it) from your down day. What are raspberry keytones? I'm always looking for things to suppress my appetite. As far as your husband's birthday goes, I would make it an up day and just go back on schedule with the next day being a down day unless you feel that this disruption to your schedule will really throw you off your plan.

Hello, all. I have read the book and yesterday I began on a down day. I am on an up day now but I am not hungry. What's up with that?! A slight feeling of emptiness in my tummy that is not a nagging thing. Thinking about having some grilled chicken strips but they, nor anything else sounds good. I weighed 234 yesterday and won't be on the scale again for two weeks. I did not use meal replacement shakes as suggested because I am a pro at weighing and counting food calories. Clocked in at 455 yesterday which was a bit over the recommended 431 from the website's calculator. Not stressing it as it is under 500. I am down from 303 as my top weight when I got married 12 years ago. I lost 16 pounds on eat to live and kept it off for 5 years and used HCG in 2010 to get down to 176 before having my thyroid out due to cancer in Dec. of 2010. After radiation therapy, I gained back 59 pounds over a period of eleven months. Whew! All up to date. LOL. I take a daily multi, along with 1000 mg. calcium 3 times a day because my parathyroid no longer functions. I also take optimized saffron for depression, which works terrific. I take chromium with L-arginine for blood sugar support as I am pre-diabetic. I also recently started raspberry keytones which seem to really be helping with food cravings. I have a wheat -free eating plan as I was told by a naturalpathic doctor I have wheat sensitivity. So I basically eat meat, fruit, and veggies exclusively.
I do have one question................My husband's birthday is on one of my scheduled down days during the first two weeks. What do I do? Do I do two up days and get back on track? Or should I just order a 500 cals or less at applebees?

Thanks for the replies everyone :)

My first day went good, i stuck with 500 kcal and just kept having 1/2 cup shake each meal time and some before bedtime. i thought best to spread it out so i dont feel hungry.

I have looked on the recipe finder for vegan things and there are loads, thanks for the tip.

I find the expense with vegan food isn't that bad, i try and stick with just buying a lot a veg (frozen can be cheaper when fresh not in season) and fruit, as i've found processed vegan food(chocolate, fake cheese, fake meat) is quite expensive but i do sometimes have vegan ice cream/ vegan sausages as a treat :)

Thanks for the advice and i look forward to contributing more to the group in future,

Jo

Welcome to the team Jo! I've been vegetarian for 34 years and have been attempting to go vegan. I haven't been successful in doing a complete switch-over to being a vegan, but I have pretty much been able to stop eating cheese as well as ice cream and drinking milk. Almond milk works out fine for me and the vegan cheese (Daiya?), works out alright for me. It doesn't taste as good as dairy cheese, but the plus is that it isn't addictive as dairy cheese is. I find that avocado with its creamy texture is not a bad cheese substitute in sandwiches. I don't have a lot of recipes as my wife takes care of that. Monica, you are correct. Vegan food is definitely more expensive than other food.

Welcome to the team. You can do 400 but 500 works good too. On the calculator you will see a higher number. That is not the amount to eat on your up day. That was used to find how many down day calories to eat. On the up day eat only until satisfied not full. We are trying to learn to eat less and we have all eaten too much and stretched our stomachs. One of our team members lost over 70 lbs since last March but she followed it as it was written, and didn't deviate. Good luck and again welcome..Bug

I hope your first day is going well. I am not vegan but do have a niece that is and one of my brothers was for some years, but stopped as the cost of food was too high for him to stay vegan. I do not eat meat every day, in fact I fast three days a week. If you look for vegan recipes here on Spark there are a lot of them. Good luck with this WOE(way of eating).

Hi everyone,

I've just read the Altenate day diet and decided to give it a go, I want to lose 32 pounds to get to a BMI of 20 :)

I've brought some meal replacement shakes and am going to do my first 400 calorie(thats what calc said was 20% for my weight height + age) day tomorrow. Should you use what the calculator says or stick with 500 kcal for first 2 weeks?

Also I'm a vegan and found a few vegan recipes in the book, is anyone else vegan/vegetarian , has any advice?

Wish me luck for my first day,

Jo :)

Not really new, just haven't done this in a long while. I did very well on this diet, a few years ago, but never could get back on it again, successfully.
Found a co-worker with health problems that would benefit from the diet, and she was very successful. Now, she wants to go back on the diet, which is a good motivation for myself, as well.

I guy a garden salad with dressing on the side and just dip my fork in the dressing periodically wit bites. It keeps your calories around 100 if you do it right and depending on what in the salad. That way you are eating along with them but not going over the allotted calories for the day. Other tricks are ordering steamed veggies and check what soups they have. 4 oz of fish is only 100 calories and thats a pretty good sized portion...also stick with the steamed veggies and you can keep that meal to around 150 calories easily. Calorieking.com is a good free site where if you know where you are going to eat, then you can look up the lower calorie menu items to pick your meal. It can be done, but you have to commit to this as a lifestyle change. I always had good support from friends so it was never really an issue for me feeling pressured to eat anyway. Besides, this is your life and your health and you shouldn't give a damn what they might think if you choose not to eat the same.

Sorry for the cursing but that is trully how I want to state it. Eating out has led to the ruin of most diets and its time for us to say ENOUGH!

Thankyou Sioned40....I did get the book for my kindle reader on my Android and am reading it now. Has alot of science behind it. Some amazing testimonies too. I need to pick the days I can commit-----I tried it hazardously one week before I even got the book but I only truly did it one day as other things came up on the down days the two other times and I ended up eating. (For instance I ended up at a Chuckie Cheese ) I do alot of socializing so I have to do it on days I pray noone will pop in. Does anyone got suggestions for this type of thing----like if it is your down day and unexpected company comes and wants to go out to dinner.

DietDemon, welcome to the group. This way of eating has been life changing for me and I thank Bug for starting this group so that I could find it. I highly recommend reading the book because it really clears some of those questions up. Be patient with yourself and know that this is not a race but a journey with ups and downs...lol.

Hello everyone. This is my first day. I started out on a down day. Sticking to high protein, low calorie shakes on the down days. So far so good! Hoping I can stick with this. It fits into my lifestyle well and seems easy. I have about 65 lbs to lose.

Dear all

I would like to join the forum. I started JUDD yesterday and I am aiming to lose 1 stone. This is the last stone I need to shed, so appreciate the information I have gleaned from the message boards. I did the first day yesterday DD felt very hyperactive after 500 cals but want to stick to the plan.

Good luck everybody

I will be reading all of your posts for motivation and inspiration

Take care all and have a good week.

Hello! Newbie here...this way of eating makes sense for me, as I've been on Atkins and finding it hard to eat enough some days; I'm going to alternate every day....400 on down days, up to 1980 on up days, according to Dr. Johnson's calculator.

I'm excited to do this, and am halfway through my first down day. Have a nice breakfast planned in the morning to motivate me to make it through until then! :)

He also promotes resveratrol, which is the ingredient in wine that might provide health benefits... although I think the rats in the study consumed the equivalent of red wine to become pretty much pickled emoticon.

Wine is something I fit in often emoticon. And a good quality beer here and there.

Hey there I am new here, saw people discussing alcohol and the book by Dr. Johnson has a reference to the French and their red wine and all the health benefits but he says it is any alcohol that gives you the benefits but only 1-2 glasses and also only benefits those over 40. He said the same benefits come from exercise too. I personally cannot drink 1-2 glasses a day, it always makes me go to sleep. Anyway I am in Texas---- Glad to meet all of you

Organic rum or vodka is only 97 cals for 1.5oz mix with some diet soda and yum.
Empty calories yes but not to bad on an up day here and there.

Primarily it comes down to calories in/calories out, so if a glass of wine is going to help you make healthy choices otherwise, it won't prevent you from losing weight. It IS "empty calories" and it CAN lead to loss of inhibition, causing you to eat more than you might have otherwise, so that's why most diet plans don't exactly recommend it. But if your goal is developing an eating plan you can maintain for life, you should learn how to fit in whatever treats (in moderation) give you pleasure, whether that be chocolate or wine of whatever.

A 5-ounce glass of white wine is about 110 calories, red is around 150. Way less than a sugary, fatty pina colada, for instance.

Hi, alcohol has always been not an option on every diet that I know of. I think it's because of alcohol sugar but I'm no expert. One thing is if you do drink I'm pretty sure wine is better than other alcohols. I read somewhere that you need to abstain while in the first two weeks and that alcohol will slow down or stop weight loss. As to eating or not eating, our goal is to learn to eat less so I wouldn't eat if I wasn't that hungry. I'm happy you are doing good..

New from the UK- I am at 231 lbs trying to get to 182 lbs and in a week in and lost 7 lbs already- the down days are fine after the first couple and I am getting a content feeling not to go overboard on the UD! Just a couple of questions- how does alcohol fit into this- there was nothing mentioned in the book about it. Had a bottle of white on Saturday and a bottle of red on Sunday but still had an amazing weight loss. Clarification would be good!
I have only had 150 calories on an UD so far after a DD and it's lunch time and not feeling incredibly hungry - do I eat or listen to my body! Wow - what a great feeling this diet is!!!
