Sounds like you have it planned out well. Sticking with the shakes definitely makes it easier to keep track of how many calories you're actually taking in.

Thank you both! I remember Buglet and also Golden Angel Fish from last time, a few years ago now.

I have a feeling its gonna be a bit of a hard slog, phew! But since I don't like any other diets, its the only way, and I just have to keep going. As I said in my blog, I have re-thought my strategy in terms of Down Days. I did eat proper "food" on DDs before. But Dr Johnson points out how powerful the unconscious is in terms of getting food into the body, hence not even noticing - those extra peanuts, those crusts of bread from my son's plate, and so on. So I have decided for now that Shakes are the way to go, as its harder to 'cheat'. I found a nice high protein one which seems fine. I drank it my last Down Day and it was fine. I would like to lose about 30 lbs between now and the end of the year Probably half by the Summer and then half through to the end of the year. And then really maintain that weight, whatever it is. I'm not happy with the weight I've put on and the effect its had on my appearance, especially the last 10-15 pounds, which has really made the most difference. Should get rid of that by end of July :-)

Just saying hello to everyone!

I need to lose about 30 pounds.

I did Alternate Day diet a few years ago and was very successful, even though I wasn't always that strict. I maintained for a while after that. But life and stress has made me put it all back on slowly. My clothes don't fit again, which I need to do something about. So, time to go back to base.

This time round, being older, I think I will need to be stricter! I think I will also need to think about diet breaks and maintenance at some point.

But for now, take it to the bridge!!!

I know that a lot of people write down the calories of everything that they take in and that makes them more accountable. I don't do it myself, but I do think that it is a good idea. You might want to post the same question on the "Spring Talk" thread as that is the main thread and more people are likely to see it and respond to your question. Also, here's a link to a thread where Bug posted some good pointers regarding JUDDD. This one is kind of hidden on the site:

Thanks Mapletree. What I found with the Vegan diet was that I was not counting quantity. Eating way too many starchy carbs to feel full and satisfied. Now that I am back to Sparkpeople and writing down what I eat I am amazed at the number of calories I was concusimg as a vegan. I need to be accountable by writing down what I eat.
Do you all write down your up day calories.
What is a good guideline for how many calories are OK on an up day?

Welcome FootHillRose. I'm surprised that you gained weight on a vegan diet, but I certainly can see how it's possible. I had gained a lot of weight when I initially went on a vegetarian diet, but I was eating a lot of dairy products and non-vegan carbs such a pastries. The only shake that I tried was EAS. Their chocolate shakes are actually quite tasty. I haven't had any in quite a while as I've been trying to go somewhat in the direction of a vegan diet and the shakes do have some milk products. Hope to see your postings over in the "Spring Talk".

Good morning!
I am new here and on my second up day after 2 down days. Liost5.5 pounds so far. Have just discovered you all. My husband is my inspiration. He has lost 35 pounds on this program. I had been a Vegan for 2.5 years believing that I would lose weight and get healthier. Well, 20 pounds weight gain later I realized that I was OD'ing on carbs. I'm proof that there are fat Vegans. I then read EatRight For Your Blood Type and discovered that I am type O and need to eat more animal protein and little carbs. I feel so.much better since eating lean protein again.
Since watching my husband do so well on the JUDDD I decided to join him and 2 down days later can say it is great. I felt so good yesterday not eating. It is so freeing not to have to think about eating. I just learned I should be drinking shakes for the first two weeks.
What shakes are best?
Glad to find you all.

I have about 125 lbs to lose and am new to ADF and SparkPeople. I'm on my 2nd day of fasting and I feel great! I too have been the yo-yo dieter mostly low carb diets but I've done practically everything. It felt so good not to worry about what I was going to eat on my up day or normal eating day. I think that's what is going to motivate me the most - because I'm not feeling deprived. The fast days so far are easy too - I've been drinking meal replacement shakes and I don't have to think about what I'm going to eat.

Hi! My name is Liz and I just recently discovered alternate day fasting. I saw the Michael Moseley pbs program when it came out and was intrigued, but never gave it any more thought. Fast forward to now, I have been stuck with my weight for several weeks. I looked again into ADF and decided to try it. Yesterday was my first fast day (I did a water fast) and it was hard, but doable. After my body gets used to it I think I will really like it, but today I still feel pretty woozy! emoticon

Hello everyone, my name is Mary and I'm a newbie on JUDDD. I found it accidentally, but I think it totally fits my life and my eating style! I'm excited and today is day 2. On my opening "Down" day, I did a nutrisystem shake for breakfast, another one for lunch and dinner was a spring mix salad with 1/3 of a tomato and 3 hard boiled egg whites. I use plain vinegar or balsamic with a touch of salt and I'm good to go. My snack was 100 calorie bag of popcorn sprinkled with Brewers' yeast. It was a very easy day (9 glasses of water and 3 coffees) and today I was down 4.2 lbs and 1.3% body fat. Today will be an up day and I am attending a spaghetti dinner tonight for work....yeah....just in time for "Fat Tuesday"! My previous challenge has been once I start eating low calories, then I eat too low everyday. I have released many extra fat pounds to the universe only to pick them up again once I begin eating as my old self. Again, I know this is going to be different. It gives me permission to eat very low one day and then normal the next and low again....I know this is what I need to not only get to my goal but to maintain my goal!

It looks like you have 2/3 of the components that you need. It's unfortunate that you're not getting the support that you need at home. Maybe they'll come around. I have the support that I need at home, but I do remember years ago when I first became a vegetarian (before I was married) that it took time for some family members to accept.

Just started with with the trainer too. Juddd and 20-30 minutes of physical activity 5 days a week are her starting recommendations. She's apparently a big fan of JUDDD and/or intermittent fasting to reach weight goals. She was totally right about how good I would feel on low days. It's almost funny how scared I was about something that ended up being so easy.

The trainer (and Sparkpeople) is my main form of support. My significant other and teenage children are either actively sabotaging me or completely ignoring my weight loss quest.

AVALIVY, it's good to hear that you've got a good start with JUDDD. How long have you had a personal trainer? That should give you an extra push as well.

I started JUDDD on Tuesday, February 4 at the recommendation of the local personal trainer that I decided to work with. I have around 100 pounds to lose and am also adding in exercise. I've done the yo-yo diet thing so i've tried a lot of plans and usually low calorie leaves me hungry enough to chew my arm off and frustrated enough to start breaking the rules by the 2nd or 3rd day but so far, JUDDD is the easiest diet I've tried. I feel super awake and amazing and motivated on the down days; making them easy to stick to. Up days I feel more normal for me (sluggish, sleepy).

Five years is a long time. Very impressive that you have continued this program.
Last couple of years I did 17 day diet. Lost weight but gained it back. And I died Adkins for
Six weeks. Didn't gain or lose. I'm so tired of always eating low carb and going out to
eat and not ordering what I want.

Hi again, I hope everyone is doing well. It's been a long day! I did manage to walk
during most of my lunch and at break. It's my fast day. I can't wait to eat what I want tomorrow.
I first watched Michael Mosley on Rachel Ray. I did further research and found uddd.
I like it better because I don't want to restrict my calories on eat days. I so want to lose weight.
Yes Central Valley is a really small town by Redding. Thank for the info on YouTube.

Hi COFFEEBEANED and welcome. I felt like the first fast day that I did was the hardest, but that might not be the case with everyone. Just don't give up, you can do it, and truly, after the first fast day, the others are so much eaiser!!

Hi!

I hope I'm posting in the right place! I just joined Sparkpeople because I noticed the Alternate Day Diet group on google.

I have been reading about alternate day dieting and came across this interview

http://www.healthista.com/nutrition/fast
ing-diets-science-research-studies-52-
diets/

I have been interested in Alternate Day dieting and the research behind it. I have The Every Other Day Diet by Dr. Varaday on pre order from amazon, and also the revised Alternate Day Diet book by Dr. Johnson. They will be shipped in December when they are published, but the article I linked basically gives instructions on how to do it, and Dr. Varaday's facebook page gives great tips, so I'm good to go! My first alternate day fasting is tomorrow.

Glad to meet you all!

I've been doing uddd for 2 weeks. I ordered the 5 mile walk DVD I read about.
I use to work out heavy duty at the gym every week. Now I'm just so tired after work. So I'm going to try walking. I'm trying not to over eat on my up days. I do well on
down days. My husband graduated from Central Valley in 1980. We live in
Marysville two hours away. I'm off to walk.

I am not new to spark people but am new to this page. I am on HCG right now and will be off my low calorie days and the shots in 14 days. I have only 6 more pounds I want to lose. I have the alternate-day diet book from dr. Johnson and am really interested in it. I would like to do this after I am done with HCG. Has anyone go from HCG to JUDDD and if so when did you do it? I am wondering if I should do the 6 week HCG maintenance and then do JUDDD. Can anyone give me some suggestions? I am so afraid of gaining all my weight back as I do with all other diets I have been on. Thanks.

Congratulations Linda! It sounds like you are well on your way to that 20 lb. loss. I believe that losing the weight slowly (such as your 1 lb. per week) will make it easier to keep it off and maintain your weight once you have reached your goal weight.

Hi everyone,

I was on this team several years ago but drifted away from sparkpeople. I am back and ready to take better care of myself. In fact I hadn't thought about Juddd in a long time until this morning when I heard an report on NPR on intermittent fasting and I remembered how I had some success with this woe. I used to be a vegetarian/ vegan but have recently included fish and eggs into my diet. I have a medical condition called pcos and hope I can lose enough weight to put my symptoms into remission.

Welcome Cassandra and Good Luck! Hope to see you post over in the May's Conversation thread - I know it's now June and soon to be July, but our team leader has moved and lost internet connection for awhile. I'm a long time vegetarian and have dabled with being a vegan, but haven't had too much success with that yet. It's great to hear that you've been able to lose weight being a vegetarian as I gained about 50 lbs. the first year I was a vegetarian probably due to substituting a lot of dairy products and "goodies" for the meat that I was avoiding. Just make sure that you get a lot of protein in your diet so that you don't run into the same problem that I did when I went vegetarian.

Hello all,

My name is Cassandra, and I am new to the JUDDD diet plan. I have been a member of spark people for many years, but have not officially logged in since 2011.
In March I decided to become a vegan, but lasted only about 6 weeks. Since then I have decided to just continue on as a vegetarian. I have lost about 10 pounds since March (now that I am no longer eating meat). I have about 20 pounds left before I reach my ultimate goal. I am hypothyroid, so it takes me a long time to lose weight, even when I am on my best behaviour! I am really hoping that JUDDD can help me...

Tomorrow will be my first official day, and I will be starting on a DD. Wish me luck :)

Welcome Luann! Yes Vicky, I like the less clutter approach as well. I still have books in my closet from 20 years ago that I haven't opened in 20 years and need to clean them out at some point.

Welcome Luann7 :)

The link to Dr. Johnson's site is below. The basic run down is there and at the bottom of the page you will find a calculator. Pop your info in and it will tell you what you should eat on your up days and down days based on your goals. It also explains the 2 week induction phase. Hope you find it works for you. It seems to be working for some people very well. emoticon

Thank you Bob for the welcome and the info. I'll check that link out. I've been reading the posts on here today and sort of had the feeling that I probably didn't really need another book. I'm glad. I've got enough clutter to clear out this spring. No sense spending money for something else that will need to be recycled emoticon

Welcome Lindy and Vicky. You don't necessarily need to buy another book. If you search through this site, you should be able to find some lengthy postings by Bug that should be able to tell you most everything that you need to know about this diet. Bug could direct you exactly where to find them, but unfortunately she is on a little hiatus as she is in the process of moving and may be inactive for a while.

Hi, I'm Vicky

I just joined this group today. I think it might be the only IF group that has any real activity on it so I was glad I came across it today. I have not ready this ADD book. I have read the fast 5, eat stop eat, and the warrior diet. I do think I will find a good fit for my own needs doing something along the lines of 1 or more of these plans. A lot of the information in these books is similar. I read the other books online and I didn't have to buy them. I haven't been able to find the Alternate Day Diet so I guess I would have to order it. Did you like the book and find it useful or do you think I can probably learn what I need to know without buying another book? There is a lot about it online but I thought since many of you have been using it I would ask before spending :)

Hi there,
I've just joined this group though I have been on spark for a few years. I had slowly taken off about 28kilos ( in th region of 5o pounds) but in the last few months I've been yo-yo-ing and gradually stacked 12 pounds back on. I did several cycles of hcg during this time and though I loved the way you can lose weight fast, I could not keep to the restrictions - hence the yo yo effect and weight gain.
So I am looking for something I can do forever and maybe this alternate day diet thing is it. I want to lose that 12 pounds (fast would be good!) LOL and then about the same again.
I know that checking in with spark helps so I hope to be active here and get to know you guys,
Hugs from oz,
Lindy

Welcome to the team Feisty! Many people find that they are more successful if they put their own personal modifications onto the plan. If you don't deviate too much from how it is written, you should do fine. This is because everyone is different and while the plan is great, modifications (hopefully slight) are made based on everyone's individual life styles.

Hi I'm new to this team, I've started eating healthy and exercising and waiting on Dr.Johnson's book which I ordered from amazon. I have 45 pounds to lose, I've been stuck at my current weight and nothing seems to work. I did join a gym 2 weeks ago so I'm hoping that helps. The quality of my life really depends on this working, I'm a single mom and I've never been in such a bad place in my life. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thank you, that does help. Do you still get pretty good results by doing that? How many calories do you recommend for middle calorie days? Today is my first down day. I ate an hard boiled egg for breakfast, plan on having a Slim Fast high protein shake for Lunch and the same for dinner, and lots of water throughout the day. I should hit about 458 calories for the day. I think this evening at home will be my true test (my husband is not doing the diet). Thanks again for your suggestion!

Hello I am new to Alternate day dieting and am hoping this will work for me. I like that this diet does not deprive you of anything. I am a pretty picky eater so I am unable to stick to most diets. I have about 20 lbs I would like to lose. What I am thinking will be the most difficult, is doing down days on Friday or Saturdays. I don't cook on those days so we go out to eat. Any tips for me?

Welcome Sencha! Losing 12 pounds by May is not impossible, but different people have different metabolisms. I have found that the first time I did this diet (a few years back) I lost a lot of weight quickly, most of it water, but it was weight, and I averaged about 3 to 5 pounds per week, so yes, I do believe a 12 pound loss is possible, just be sure to be very strict with yourself and whatever you do...no cheating!

I'm new to sparks and Alternate Day.. Just started yesterday. First day was difficult, today is a free day but I'm trying to keep things reasonable. Decent filling breakfast. Hoping lunch will mainly be a heavy handed helping of veggies and some fruit. Dinner will be a splurge, hubby and I have a takeout and movie night planned, probably, Chinese or Thai

I'm also alternating 5 min workouts 5 times a day (just very small ones) and hoping to walk 30 mins a day 3 or 4 times a week. Drinking 3L of water per day every day, am I being overly ambitious when I hope to lose 12 or so lbs by May 11th (vacation starts)?

I'm trying to not set myself up for failure by worrying about a specific # or weight I'm trying to get to, yet it seems impossible to shut that off in my head.
Whelp here is to attempting something outside my comfort zone and reprogramming my thinking: It's the journey not the 12 lbs

For those of you who don't know me, I've been a member of the alternate day diet since 2009. Upon joining this team I saw results, and they were FANTASTIC! I had 63 pounds to lose, and sadly when I was only 20 pounds away from reaching my goal, I allowed "life" to step in and put all my hard work on the back burner.
emoticon
I have tried to do this diet on and off over the past couple of years and just find it too difficult to do without the support I get from Sparkpeople and this team. I am now approaching 50 (in a couple of years) and know that if getting in healthy shape and staying in healthy shape gets harder after the age of 40, I suppose it's probably even harder after the age of 50.
emoticon
Because I have allowed myself to overeat, become lazy and just not care, I not only have 52 pounds to lose (once again) but am now finding that my feet and ankles are beginning to swell and hurt by the end of the day. I am bloated all the time and at times have sharp pains in my knees. My back is sore, I have heartburn and indigestion most of the time, and my skin isn't even looking good anymore.
emoticon
I believe I can turn back the hands of time, repair a lot of the damage that I've done to my body through neglecting it, I just need to set my mind to achieving my goals. And with the help and support of my fellow Alternate dieters, I know all will be possible.
emoticon
I look forward to getting to know many of you!

Welcome Trinity! I wish you the best of luck on your weight loss. I visited your Spark page. Your majors of "Math and a Molecular Specialization in Biology and Chemistry" seems like a real good combination, but I'm guessing that you haven't done anything with it career-wise since you are home-schooling your kids. Well it definitely comes in handy with your home-schooling.

Hi I'm new here. I already do IF, but I saw this approach and thought I would try this and see if this works better as far as weight loss. Plus, I will monitor the other symptoms that I have and see when those go down as well. I hope this IF approach will be more successful.

Go to your Start Page. On the left side click Account/Email Preferences. On the Account tab, scroll down to "My Information" and uncheck the box labeled "Use Metric System" then save. Voila!
They've changed it but you still need a page.

hi folks!

i'm new to spark people and new to the alternate day diet, but it sounds good to me. i recently saw a bbc horizon documentary called 'eat fast live longer' and it looked like something i could definitely do. i have a lot of weight to lose, but i'm feeling hopeful that this might work.
i've decided to fast on 'down days' and just drink water and tea. i've done three fast days so far and have been surprised how easy it has been (though i haven't been around other people eating). on my 'up days' i haven't felt the need to hugely overeat so far. i'm mostly vegetarian, although i do occasionally eat fish.
a year and a half ago i did a half marathon (slowly but i finished and wasn't last!) but today i tried to run after not doing much exercise for a while and it was hard to run for four minutes straight. so i'm going to start again with a couch to 5k plan and see if i can get back into running too.
looking forward to us all encouraging each other in our weight loss. emoticon

P.S. How do I get my ticker to register in pounds not kgs? I don't have 91 kgs to lose!

Hi, I'm new! I have been JUDDDing since Jan. 11, so a month now. I have lost 12 pounds, and have 35 more to go. Today is a DD, and I still get pretty hungry before bed, so, I have been googling stuff like jimmy johns and schlotsky's for the last hour. I never end up eating what I think I will the next day though.
I came to so so I could start an online tracker, and was super surprised to see this team. Hollaaa!
