Sorry just found this (lost power and been working off my smartphone)...another note with medications. With medications that have side effects of increased appetite (and consequently weight gain), you really have to be conscientious of that and make sure you are working on things like portion control and for some folks the eating 6 times a day (3 meals/3 snacks or 6 smaller meals) will help spread the food thru the day and help at least satiate that need to feed. Usually this possible side effect settles down after the first month when you are also settled into the med dosage. I have been on prednisone for YEARS and it is notorious for weight gain. I have used this and increased water consumption to help keep it down - along with reminding myself that I am not hungry and it's okay to feel hungry (because ie I just ate an hour ago).

And hey if you feel the need to eat - grab those veggies!

I like living. I have sometimes been wildly, despairingly, acutely miserable, racked with sorrow, but through it all I still know quite certainly that just to be alive is a grand thing. Agatha Christie

Glad to help!!

Actually people don't actually have to eat carbs as the body will convert fat and protein into glucose if carbs are not available. LOL.

People have a lot of misconceptions about paleo and Atkins. Although you can eat as much meat as you want you pretty well can on South Beach too and none of the diets recommends eating tons of meat. They start with serving sizes and allow you to have more to keep you satiated. Atkins is actually a high fat diet, not a high protein diet like many people think. And Paleo is about culling processed foods and eating natural foods that a caveman might have eaten. They recommend a lot of low glycemic veggies actually. 2 cups of salad greens and a cup of low glycemic veggies for Atkins which is surprising to many people. I know people who eat more veggies on Atkins than they did before they started it. LOL. I have never done Atkins because I love fruits and more veggies that are not on the list. My favorite diets are south beach and primal.

I know people who have done no carb and it ended very badly for them. That is not what I'm looking for. Your brain needs carbohydrates to function, but it doesn't need as many as what I eat everyday and it certainly does not need the simple sugars I currently feed it. What I'm interested in mostly is eating like people with diabetes eat. I'm going to try out South Beach. I think it will be a good starting point. Eating too much meat kind of grosses me out, so I want to stay away from Paleo and Atkins. I want to be responsible with my food. I see a nutritionist at the end of November who can help me with any bumps I find along the way. Thank you Helen_Bru for your concern and MorticiaAddams for your suggestions and insight.

I do fantastic and feel really great when I am doing lower carb but I don't tolerate the emotional deprivation well. How low you can do depends on the person. Some people do fantastic on paleo/primal or Atkins or Protein Power. Others do better on South Beach. They are both great diets.

Now that I know I can't do most of the low carb diets; i.e. Paleo/Primal Blueprint, etc. I am going to dig out all those South Beach Diet books I have and go over them again. That was where I was when I got my head turned around by the real low carb ones. It took over a year of suffering with depression which I experienced because of the low carbs before I woke upl!!!
Everyone was telling me it was because I had lost my husband and attributed it to that but my depression started BEFORE he died - however he was ill beforehand.

Sorry I made this so long. . .but I just wanted to warn those who do it too low. I think it works better for the men than it does for the women.

South Beach can be done low carb and is low fat. I highly recommend it.

Thank you. I changed my settings a bit above that for this first week or two. I just got my cholesterol results back and my doctor suggested a low carb/low fat diet.

Lower carb helps with any number of conditions. Most people stay in the 20gm to 150gm carb range depending on their medical conditions and carb tolerance level.

Good day! I've heard that eating low carb can help with weight gain due to medication. Does anyone know if there is any truth to that? I'm on Abilify and have gained about 10 lbs. Right now I'm just trying to stay in range, but I don't really know what a good range is.
