For some people carbs are almost like chemo. LOL. I'm one of them. Give me a plate of pasta and some bread sticks and I'm in a coma. LOL.

I read both Atkins diabetes revolution and Dr. Bernstein's diabetes solution. Dr. Bernstein recommends 30 net grams of carbs per day, whereas Atkin's induction phase recommended 20 net grams of carbs. I chose to do Atkins because low carbing was all new to me, and his book was easier to understand, however I did utilize some of the things I learned in Bernstein's book specifically his methods and recommendations on diabetes treatment. So basically I followed both lol. My HbA1c went from 72 (8.7) down to 36 (5.4) after 3 months. If I were to be honest, I only did Atkins properly for the 5 weeks before my blood test. I did Atkins/Bernstein + 1 - 1.5hrs of exercise 6-7 days per week. I also lost 12kgs in those 5 weeks. One of the things that I recall was I stopped stuttering lol. My confidence improved because my head wasnt foggy. I could follow a conversation easily & speak without forgetting what I was talking about, which was common for me on a high carb diet. I also used to start sentences in my head and finish them out aloud, so people I were talking to were usually confused haha. My attitude also improved. I wasnt a nightmare for my partner to be around. He said everyday I was on the low carb diet, that my grumpiness will not be missed lol. I felt it too, and my GP was able to stop my anti-depressants because we both felt I didnt need them anymore.

Where I am up to now. 2 months ago, I had to stop exercising because I got vertigo & my hearing in 1 ear kept zoning in and out. I was not eating enough for the exercise program I was doing (P90X). It took me 2 months to recover, and I was silly and starting eating high carb & processed foods again which made me put all the weight back on QQ. I guess the good thing is I didnt leave it for years. I felt sick again, mainly a sore tummy & I just kept thinking about how better I was overall on a low carb diet. I actually missed it lol. So here I am starting the journey with the help of sparkpeople's trackers to make sure I do it right this time and safely :)

Anyway, all the best miss. Great community btw. Thank you group for making me feel welcome :D

Yeah. :) I appreciate all the input so much! I have decided not to do super low carb at all. I am just going back to what I did last year that had me dropping weight at a healthy pace and that's eating what I want in moderation. I am still working on weaning off the processed stuff and eating more of the healthy carbs. I already eat whole wheat everything anyway, but I will still be watching my carbs, but just not as drastically as I originally planned. Everyone have a great day/night. :) You guys rock!

I'm sort of doing that in that I am trying to eat less processed foods all the time. Sometimes I do great and sometimes not. LOL.

Thanks everyone! I am looking forward to the journey. I am not starting off with no carbs, or even super low carbs. I am doing this in stages. But I am on the road. I appreciate all the feedback! :)

I definitely cleared up my IBS - rarely rarely have issues with it anymore. Also my energy has gone way up in comparison to before...less weight on my joints has helped with my arthritis. I can honestly say overall my health is tenfold better than it was 10 years ago. Just the matter of figuring out what works best for your body and sticking to it.

I like living. I have sometimes been wildly, despairingly, acutely miserable, racked with sorrow, but through it all I still know quite certainly that just to be alive is a grand thing. Agatha Christie

Welcome to the team! I have had a lot of benefits from going lower carb, in addition to weight loss. Initially within the first week I went from out of control blood pressure while on 3 B.P. meds down to one. When I eat on plan many of my chronic medical conditions go into remission - such as irritable bowel syndrome, GERD seborrhea, etc.

I'm a former coronary nurse and I don't worry much about total cholesterol as it is not a true indicator of heart disease risk. Most of the cholesterol in your body is manufactured by your liver, only 15 t0 20% of it comes from food. C-reactive protein is a much better indicator of heart health. The important things to concentrate on your lipid profile are your HDL, triglycerides, and HDL/LDL ratio. After going low carb my triglycerides went into normal levels. My HDL is above optimum levels. My HDL/LDL ratio went to low risk. The best way to lower cholesterol is to not smoke, limit alcohol, exercise, lose weight, consume omega 3 oils, get fiber, and cut back on the worthless carbs.

HI Welcome!
I have been eating about 80 -100 grams of carbs daily for many years(including carbs from "free" foods). Over the past year I've restricted the types of carbs I have been eating to those on the low end of the glycemic index. I tend to follow the "Sugar Solution" diet mostly. With the exception of breakfast, I do not eat grains. My cholesteral lowered, my body fat went down over 10% to 24.7 (which is great because I was born before they invented dirt (hahah)). Have tons and tons of energy! I am also diabetic, which it has helped with.

Let us know how you are doing. Both Morticia and Kierae are experts and tremendously supportive. They can help you understand the many different low carb diet plans Atkins, Southbeach to name a very few.

Good luck in your healthy eating journey! Carol

I'm not a set plan. I am just starting off lowering them. I may get on an official plan later.

Hi LOSINGVICKI. Thanks so much for your response. Yes I am looking forward to seeing if it makes a difference for me as I have several health issues at the moment.

In the past when I was doing a strict low carb plan I had more energy than I knew what to do with and I was losing about 8 lbs a month after the initial first month where I lost 32 lbs in 30 days ( wish that would happen this time around. That was 30 years ago). I enjoyed experimenting with recipes and trying out new ideas.
As for the cholestrol, I don't know. I've never had an issue with mine, thankfully.
Welcome to the team and good luck with your new eating plan. I hope you'll have much success with it.

Hi all. I just joined the team today. I am venturing into this new lifestyle of lower carb eating and was wondering if any of you could share with me the health benefits you have personally experienced from eating this way. I would greatly appreciate hearing what you have to say! :)

I've heard different things about how it affects cholesterol, some say theirs went down, others say it went up. I have heard about skin becoming clearer, high blood pressure going down, etc. Have any of you had any of these results?

Thank you so much!

Oh and my page is private, so if you'd like to friend me just send me a message and I will add you! Just make sure to add me back. :) I'd love to have some friends who are doing this as a lifestyle. :)
