Thanks. I found that I am able to eat the carbs on the diabetic plan afterall, as long as I make good choices. My blood sugar dropped 60 points in the last month and is right where I want to keep it. I'm sticking to whole grains, fruits with more fiber (esp berries), and lots of veggies. It's kind of exciting after years of avoiding carbs, but I will have to keep an eye on my readings to be sure they stay this way. I'm looking forward to learning more about good carbs.

Welcome to this great team! Good luck with your eating plan. I use the regular food tracker and ignore the goals. Carol

You can't use the diabetic program and also set your own goals.

I looked at the link you both mentioned, but it said:

Note, people on our diabetes management program cannot change their carb, protein, and fat goals.

I guess I'll just have to set my own goals in my head and not pay attention to the standard goals. It's still great to have a nutrition tracker. I've learned a lot about the way I eat, and have made some huge improvements in the last month.

Thanks to everyone for the advice and info.

You can change your plan to suit your needs. Just hit the "change nutrition goals" button and set your goals to what you want..and hit save. Wouldn't be the first (nor the last) diabetic (or low carber) who needed to change the Spark recommendations. emoticon

I use it even though I'm not diabetic. If you go to your tracker and look at the bottom to where it says to change nutrition goals. Click on it and you can change any of the goals or add more. I always change my calorie range to be one I prefer for myself. I find all the other goals to be in line with what I do.

Most of us don't use the diabetic plan on sparkpeople. It's a recipe for a coma in most diabetics. We just do our own plans.

Thanks for all the replies. emoticon My fitness tracker is now set up for the diabetes plan, but calls for 50% carbs. Is there a way to change this to a low-carb plan?

I can't do oatmeal. It triggers me.

I stick to berries, not the fleshy fruits, oatmeal, I use steel cut Irish oatmeal but do not eat it very often.

I recommend that most people get their carbs from low glycemic veggies, low glycemic fruits, nuts, seeds, and, if your plan allows, beans and legumes. Dairy if allowed. They are the healthiest sources. I'm not a fan of highly processed carbs.

I've been on SparkPeople for a month now and love it. One of the things I really want to work on is increasing the types of carbs I eat. I pretty much have been avoiding carbs for years now, but in the last month I have been eating blackberries, peaches, strawberries, and other fruits. I've been eating yams, whole wheat bread, oatmeal, Fiber One cereal. I've always eaten a variety of veggies, but mainly stick to green beans, zucchini, spinach, salads, broccoli and cauliflower. I hope to learn a lot about carbs from this board and the site in general.
