I always recommend that people get a pedometer and set a goal of 5 miles a day which averages 10,000 steps. I'm short and have a short stride so for me 5 miles is closer to 12,250 steps. I try for 6 miles a day - worked my way up to that.

OMG!!! Believe it or not, I, Mrs. Couch Potato for 10 years running has joined a gym and actually worked out. "I" have a personal trainer. I knew i would never come back unless i had a commitment to. I have planned that i am going to go to the gym 3 days a week, and then walk on 2 days. Does that sound like a good fitness plan? I don't know because i have never exercised in my life. Well, since grade school anyway. Any advice appreciated

Thanks, Sometimes when you are discouraged it's a good thing to look back and see what you have accomplished.

I think it helps too to have mini goals. Some of mine were/are

1. to get below 200 pounds - done
2. to lose 10% of my weight - done
3. to get out of the obese range - done
4, to go from being the fattest person in the house to the smallest - done
5. to lose 25 pounds - done
6. to lose 50 pounds - done but backslid
7. to get out of the overweight range - working on it

Beth, I have a lot of weight to lose, but have 10 pounds as my goal. That seems more realistic for me to acheive. Once I have that under my belt (or rather off my belt! LOL), the next goal will be 10 more pounds.

Don't forget that being healthy is made up of a lot of different things than just weight loss. For my health I have goals of: no caffeine, no sugary drinks, having a gratitude journal, sleeping appropriate hours, eating 5 vegetables a day, plus more. All these little things help with the bigger picture, and they make me feel like I am accomplishing something even if I don't lose weight that week.

Beth I know from experience where I would like to end up,but at my age I KNOW it's not realistic. So I aim for a more doable one,and once I get there I can re evaluate my goal! Diane

I would do a 2 week induction or phase one or wave whatever you want to call it. I think they jump start weight loss and get rid of cravings.

I usually recommend people aim to get into a normal weight range. It's what most doctors want. Most M.D.s initially recommend that you lose 10% of you body weight if you have medical problems and are obese.

Thank you for the welcome. So do you think i should do an "induction" period of 2 weeks? Btw I don't have a weight as a number in mind as goal, more as a feeling that i want to acheive, and that is feeling healthy and sexy again. I'm not sure what weight that will come at. Any thoughts on that will be appreciated as well.

Hi Beth!! Atkins is a great diet. I think most problems people have with Atkins is that they think they need to live a lifetime in induction and that really isn't how the diet was originally intended. Like any lower carb diet with a phase similar to induction this period is meant to reset the thermostat and get rid of cravings and triggers. In Atkins, basically induction is to achieve ketosis. Many lower carb diets recommend that after a period of two weeks that you move to a less restrictive phase unless you have more than 100 pounds to lose. There are several ways to do this. One is by gradually increasing your carb allowance by 5gms a day until your weight loss stalls. This is the point where you have probably found your carb allowance or a trigger food. This is how Atkins does it but there are other methods. South Beach, which can be tweaked to stay lower carb, adds back in more healthy foods in phase two other than the really low glycemic veggies. To be honest, with your diabetes you will never probably be able to eat a full phase 2 South Beach diet but most people can get into a range somewhere between 50 to 150 net carbs a day (phase 1.5) and do well unless you are a brittle diabetic. I have hypoglycemia and stay completely in control staying under 150gms net carbs a day. Can I have regular cake, cookies, doughnuts, etc? No. But I can have a very satisfying well-rounded diet full of almost all fruits and veggies unless they are my triggers. By process of elimination I discovered my triggers are pasta and bread. There are low carb substitutes for these things. We are fans of tweaking diets to make them work for the individual and you are a perfect candidate for this.

Hi. Here i am again wanting to lost weight and (more importantly) get healthy. I suffer from a range of illnesses that i won't bore you with, but losing weight would definitely help each one. I am 49 years old and promised myself that by the time i'm 50 (dec 2012) that i would have lost enough weight that i could feel better about myself and to feel like i wasn't staring the grim reaper straight in the eyeballs. I have done atkins before, 2 or 3 times. I lose about 50lbs each time and then....I just can't do it any more. I know that low carb is what is best for my body as I have diabetes and it has killed several of my family members including my 35 year old brother. You would think i would be scared but for some reason, i keep reaching for the donuts. I was wondering if someone could direct me a way of eating that was healthy and lower carb, without resorting to a protein/fat/ 20 grams of carb meal plan. I know the basics of low carbing and now the nutrion and how to count everything. I just need guidelines for how to use good carbs in moderation and something besides SALAD for veggies. This is where i get stuck. I look forwarding to learning from you all and hope that i will be able to contribute some as well.
