Hi, my name is Cherilynne and I decided to go low carb mainly because it has worked in the past but also because I have no energy all the time and know that when I was doing low carb before I had a lot more energy. Looking forward to meeting everyone and learning a few pointers along the way.

Most of the M.D.s I worked with don't have a problem with 8 ounces of coffee a day unless you are caffeine sensitive. Unfortunately most people are not satisfied with 8 ounces a day.

I'm glad I came here and learned why caffeine is not a good idea. Will keep that under control by maybe eliminating coffee again. I went without for a time but finally came back because I still had some in the house and also wanted to try out some beans and make it from scratch. Not a good idea, unless you keep it under control. I'm relearning a lot here that I forgot!

The best part is that you can get off the diabetes meds eventually. I had to lose 100 lbs before that happened, but haven't had to stick myself, or take a pill for my diabetes in 18 months. Type 2 diabetes is not forever. I look at it as a malfunction of the body, and with proper care, you can get it back to normal.

I got my BS checked at the doc today( 104 ).. 2 hours after breakfast( sausage omelette )... yum

Congrats on dropping 30!

According to experts like Atkins caffeine causes unstable blood sugars - a hypoglycemic response/low blood sugar which causes cravings and stimulates appetite. He also didn't allow grain beverages like coffee. He often stated that people who were stalled would lose weight when they eliminated caffeine and aspartame. He did not like it either.

Caffeine does have some good qualities but it also causes coronary artery constriction. It's kind of like alcohol - a double edge sword. I keep my intake of both very low.

Thank you again! Don't know how I could have forgotten the delicious ricotta cheese treat.

I noticed that your snacks include decaffeinated drinks. The nutritionist advised me not to drink anything caffeinated. Would you know why/how caffeine acts like a carbohydrate?

Yes- I'm back after a bad hiatus. Stepping up my carbs caused high cholesteral not to mention the effects on my blood sugars. Carol

I like to take those little cheese squares with pepperoni, I eat them here and there throughout the day, they keep my hunger at bay.

Low carb wraps with ham and cheese, cut into small pieces, you can have just the meat and cheese. I also like beef and provolone cheese, on or off the wrap.

Sugar free jello cups, hummus and celery, string cheese, almonds, peanut butter ( low sugar)
deviled eggs,

Hi- Can you share some of your new low-carb ideas for snacks? I'm always struggling to find new ideas for snacks that I can bring to work easily.

With regards to insurance, I have seen holistic MDs that were covered under my plan. A good one that I would like will not take my insurance. However, I'm hoping he will fall under the "out of network" payment. Nutritionist was not covered because my doctor would not prescribe it.

Good morning everyone, Thanks for your support and encouragement. To answer the question about insurance coverage for Holistic care. My insurance does not. But for what I have had to spend, I feel is a good deal, because the holistic Dr. will spend 1 hour with me at every visit. he has also suggested reading certain books. I feel more in the loop of my treatment of type 2 diabetes, and not just sitting back feeling helpless. In controlling my blood sugar levels by this new way of eating ( low carb ), I am also on the way to losing the weight I have carried for years.

Motheruv2,

There are MDs who practice different forms of alternative, complementary or integrative medicine. Some are covered by insurance and some are not. I see 2 different ones at 2 integrative practices and my insurance covers them. You can try:
www.acam.org
American College for Advancement in Medicine. They list MDs, DOs and NDs. The latter won't be covered and neither will nutritionists in most cases.

Our of curiosity.....does your insurance plan cover the holistic doctors? How did you find them? And are they willing to work with conventional medicine, as well?

I find that my regular doctors aren't willing to look into holistic medicine, but always say...".it won't hurt you to try that" (with a smirk on their faces......so frustrating).

Thanks,
Karen

I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes on 9-3-11. Very sad about that. I went to see a regular Dr. & than saw a Holistic Dr. who suggested low carb diet. In 2 months I have lost 30 pounds, my cholesterol & blood pressure are now normal, & I feel very alert & full of enegry. I am learning how to modify my favorite recipes now & find that that there is alot of variety out there.
