Hi, everyone! Pottery is a hobby, and it's helping me to learn patience and being in the moment. I work mainly with handbuilding since I'm pretty bad at the wheel (impatient). I just finished a sculpture class, and am now setting up a corner of a room at my house so I can work on pieces at home outside of class.

Hi I'm Cynthius, I love clay! I sculpt and toy with pinch pots. I would love to chat about firing, clays, glazes, texturing, etc. I hope this group gets active, even if just a few folks share.

Today is the first day of the rest of your life!

I'm a newbie potter. I'm wondering/hoping that this group is active because I need lots of advice!
My hubby built me a kick wheel and I'm made several pieces (not very good, but promising!) A friend fired a few of them for me, but eventually I'm going to have to learn how to glaze them... LOL!

Hi all: I've been making pottery for five years now. I have a wheel and studio in my garage, but use the recreation dept. kiln where I take classes. The class that I take is a Raku class, but we can also use the cone 10 kiln. I'm looking forward to Sparking with you!

Hi All-
I'm new to the team but not new to Sparkpeople or to Pottery. I joined Spark about 3 years ago. Did really well then fell off the wagon. I'm back on the wagon now!

I've been doing pottery for about 4 years. It's something I've wanted to do my whole life (my parents had friends that were potters and I was fascinated!). Unfortunately I don't do it full time or even part time. I do it when I can. I have a Thomas Stuart wheel in the basement- I LOVE it, but it doesn't get enough use. I'm struggling to find a space in the house that can get dirty and still encourage my creativity. The basement doesn't do it for me. I take classes once a week, I do it more for the social aspect and to block off a section of my time that I can devote to clay. I stopped taking classes for about a year and made 4 mugs and 6 bowls in that time- not very productive! I find that working with clay makes me feel more balanced internally- I think other potters tend to understand what I mean, non potters think I'm crazy! Do I center the clay or does the clay center me? emoticon

I fire in a gas kiln to cone 10- not my kiln unfortunately, I use a community kiln where I take classes. I'm focusing on bowls right now, trying to get back in the swing of things. I plan on experimenting surface decoration- probably slip and whatever else catches my fancy.

My dream is to someday have my own studio and my own kiln (either gas or wood fired). Until then I'm a cube jockey dying to break out!

Hey Everybody! I am new to the team, but been a sparker since the first of Feb. Doing great, too. I live on top of a mountain in the Smoky Mtns. of NC. I love it here. Started making pottery as a past time and turned into full time when I couldn't find a job after moving here. It is in my blood now and I can't imagine doing anything else. Money is tight, as most artists know, but I love it anyway.

Had a bummer of a day as the bowls I decorated today dried too quickly and the decorations pulled off of half of them. Tried to repair the damage, but will know tomorrow. I do about 25 shows a year and they start in April so I am trying to stockpile for the season. Can't make much progress this way!! At least I didn't go on a binge after that, so it was OK after all.

I fire electric mostly to cone 6. I have had my failures and successes. I wouldn't trade this for anything in the world. At least I can recycle the dry clay if they don't work.

Glad to find this team. Hope to meet you all soon.

Hi! I'm Patti from Texas. I really love connecting with potters. Can someone tell me what a sticky topic is? Also, how do you create a background behind your home page? I figured out how to change the color of my page, but not how to put a backgground behind it. Thanks guys! I hope to get to know everyone in the coming weeks. It's sunny today!!!!

Hi, I just joined Spark recently, found this Team and, because I'm a potter too, decided to join. I've been potting for about 15 years although I first got into clay about 30 years ago. I work at a local Guild, don't have my own studio, although I have a wheel and a kiln that I'll set up when I retire. I make functional ware, love throwing. I make just enough for our needs and to sell privately and at our annual Guild sale. We fire reduction. Maybe one of these days, I'll post some pics.

Hi!
My name is Nina and I am a potter who makes funny raku fish for a living.
I also make functional work and I have an Anagama wood-fired kiln in my back yard. I love throwing on the wheel and I do some hand-building.
I am glad I found your team. I see that many of you are doing really well and are very active on SP. I'm looking forward to following everybody's progress, both in clay and weight-loss!

Hi,

I am in Ottawa. I do pottery as a serious hobby but plan on doing it full time when I retire. I really like functional pottery and enjoy doing both wheel and hand built.
I am hoping that when I lose some weight I will have more energy to spend on it.

Hi everyone!!
Lee Ann here - New Jersey (Northern)
I had been a potter for 20 years and worked out of a shared studio. Now...I've been out of it for quite some time...but missing it greatly. For many reason...I needed to focus elsewhere along my travels, but now the way the road is taking me....it looks like I will be able to return to my clay...I have a wheel - and I have a location in my home for a studio...now I must install the kiln...I am hoping by the Summer to make progress.

My area of concentration was wheel thrown pieces - then altered - and my favorite firing method is Raku.

I also love to handbuild ... large platter ... landscapes....

I would love to hear about where you all are from and what you are presently working on!

Oh... I recently joined Spark People and have been practicing a very successful weight reduction program and will hit 100 lbs lost this week...I better! Cause - I am ready to begin a transition phase and learn how to maintain...So I am feeling great and hence my thoughts are turning to a creative vein...

Hi, I'm Cheryl. I did some hand building in college and took a couple throwing classes at a studio in Sacramento. I really enjoy it and am saving up for my first pottery wheel at home.

I'm really glad to find a SP group that has the same interests and is small. I'm hoping that having a reason to some to SP daily will encourage me to keep up the food tracking and exercise.

Hi All,
My name is Suzie and Im from New Zeland.

Im a fellow potter/sculptor/clayzee. I mainly work with slab built form and tilemaking.Im passionate about the preservation and reincarnation of old things otherwise destined for the dump, and they find their own way into my work.

Ive been so lost in my job(Palliative Care Nurse),family (husband & teenage daughters) or in my shed creating that I simply havent taken good care of myself. As I hit 50 in Jan 2010 its time to make a line in the clay and get moving.

It feels good to be back - I was a member two years ago so I know all the tools are here -its just the application I need to work on !!

Im planning to test a new glaze on a 2'x2' tile for every kilo I loose to keep me motivated, mark my progress and to have created an instillation of my journey along the way.
I work with earthernware paperclay - mostly cone 03 so Ill be happy to share favourite glazes on the way.

Looking forward to getting to know you all
Regards
Suzie

Hi I am new to the group! I love pottery. I have been doing it for about 10 months now and when I met my best friends dad who is a potter I immediately became interested in the art. I signed up for some classes just for fun and I am seriously thinking about turning it into a career. I dropped out of college because I did not know what I wanted to do and now I am pretty sure I know what I want to do. So...hello to all and I look forward to getting tips/suggestions and much more information from everyone! :)
Sarah
Suggestion: There should be a place directly in this group where we can upload photos so we can see everyone's work right here!(I don't know if that is possible but it would be cool to have everyone's work next to eachother and look at the different styles!)

Hello. I've been on SP about 1 1/2 months now. I've lost 11 lbs and am quite happy with my progress and the support here. I am not a potter but am interested in it. I check out wheels and kilns on-line occasionally and dream a bit but have no idea what would be good for either one. I am interested in Italian maiolica and have painted some cone 04 bisque dishware using Hobby Colorobbia glazes. I've really enjoyed it and take my work to a local store for firing. They have returned things chipped occasionally but they are the only game in town. This is one of the reasons I think it would be nice to have my own kiln! Glad to be here and hope to learn and lose weight!

Hi,
My name is Sandy Hughes, and I'm an aspiring potter. I have only been practicing for 3 or 4 years, but I am pretty hooked. I'm looking forward to the summer so I will have more time to throw.

Hi! I just joined today and am delighted to see a pottery group, and am hoping it won't be another month before someone else posts here. I am a full time professional potter, and have been for over 35 years. I am eager to read the other posts, especially to read the exercises for potters, and hoping to get help and support for my health goals. I agree - let's help each other get centered!

Hi,

I just join sparkpeople a couple of days ago and this is actually my first post on any board. I have been doing pottery on and off for about 40 years. Right now I don't have a lot of time to do a lot because of raising kids & working full time. I used to share a wheel & kiln with my sister, but recently got my own due to a house fire destroying the kiln.

I am really looking forward to trying some of the excerises. Everyone here seems so helpful & it is so encouraging.

Hi!

I joined SP serioiusly on Jan 2nd. Already down 5 pounds!! I'm glad I found the Pottery Team!

LET'S GET CENTERED!!

I've been doing clay for 18 years. I'm 42 so almost half my life! I owned (for 11yrs) up until this past September one of those paint-it-yourself-pottery studios. But 4 years ago I opened a clay studio to fill the giant VOID in my life and have been teaching clay ever since...so as of September when I sold the PIYP I became a FULL TIME CERAMIST!

Nice to meet you guys!

I've only just begun: taking classes since Aug last year.

I've admired my daughter's pieces from college and decided to try throwing. It's a LOT harder than it looks. I congratulate you all!!! Centering is my biggest problem.

Hi everyone.

I've been throwing for about nine years is all. I have a wheel and kiln and way too much "stuff" already. When we bought our new house it had an air conditioned room with a bathroom in the garage just perfect for a studio so I took it over. Ripped the carpet out and made it pottery heaven. lol

Pottery is my stress reliever.

Hi clayslinger! My name is Kaine. I started about 8 years ago... but I have not done it full time since as I graduated from high school and college, as well as getting a full time job and bought my first house in that time.

I recently bought a kiln and a pottery wheel and got my studio close to up and running but I need to organize a little more before I can get started.

I haven't thrown on the wheel since high school and that was only 2 pieces because each kid got 45 minutes on the wheel per semester because there were so many kids in the class. I am so excited to make my own things... on my own time... without other people there to tell me what to do. As I said I have a few of my older pieces on my sparkpage but I need to get pictures of the ones I gave to my mom, they are the better pieces. Hopefully soon more to come!

How is everyone doing?

Just curious - how long has everyone been potting? I'm at 11 years now - with a 2 1/2 year hiatus to go to teacher's college and start teaching.
Teaching pottery at our guild is new to me this year although I'd done it privately for years.
I also had an historic studio set up for 5 summers at our local pioneer village and did re-enacting as well as potting on site. Eventually they needed my space and (not so kindly) asked me to leave! Hmmph their loss!

So glad to have another pro to get ideas, techniques, etc.

I'm a beginner. Realizing you have to throw a 1/2 ton of clay before you're any good. At least it feels that way to me!

I'm in Florida; we have a lot of Canadian snowbirds here right now. Come on down! There was a festival this weekend with potters galore!

I'm enchanted with 'sliptrailing' right now. Bought a few pieces, but haven't tried it myself. My teacher says it's the sure way to madness. Ha ha.

I looked for a pottery group when I first joined SparkPeople - didn't think about starting my own mind you. Joined the artist group instead.
Now I feel like I'm home.....

I'm a Canadian, a school teacher, mom, and hobby potter (can't say part time 'cause sometimes it just AIN'T!!!) I also teach for our local guild and sit on the executive board.

I've been potty - I mean potting - for 11 years now with 3 off for teacher college a couple years ago (got back to it this past spring in fact). Just like riding a bike - no worries there, and I am better now then I was!

Can't wait to scan around this group and pick up some tidbits.

Hey there Marcelyn! Glad you joined the little group. I've started a new job too - in November. Been very slack with my Spark stuff since then. Plus the holidays. Time to get back at it!

Are shoulder injuries common in pottery. My left shoulder & down into my arm has been hurting. Seems almost 'frozen'. I can't raise it straight up. Maybe I need physical therapy.????

Welcome Marcelyn, I keep checking to see if anyone is posting but I have been remiss lately as I just got a job and have been to exhausted to check SP lately

I also had a shoulder injury, but my preference has always been hand building! I throw once in a great while but I love to sculpt too! I will keep an eye out for you now!

Do or do not. There is no try. YODA

I noticed that this team isn't active but I thought I'd give it a try and maybe a little rejuvination would occur. :) I'm Marcelyn, an amateur potter who is currently recovering from shoulder surgery so I'm stuck with handbuilding for a few weeks. *pooh!* Hope to hear from some of you.

Hi Susie!
I am glad to be here! I can't wait to see your pictures! I am so glad we have this team. Ceramics has been one of my favorite hobbies since I picked it up in high school. It is somewhat relaxing when I am doing it and the reward for a finished piece cannot be matched!

P.S I hope everyone stays active in the discussions as some of my other teams have almost died. (Even the ones with a bzillion members) Hopefully our passion for the art will keep the team alive even if it is just us for awhile.

Hope everyone has a great weekend! (Hopefully I will get some new pics up soon!)

Hi Kaine,

Glad to have you join a little group. I'm sorry I didn't post this earlier. I'm very happy that you joined. Wow, we have four people. I didn't think anyone would join the pottery team. But here we all are. It is so great. Good luck to all of you on your pottery ventures. Tonight we pick up our pieces at the pottery studio. I am so excited. It is all I thought about today. Maybe I will take some pics and put them on my gallery for you guys to see. Take care and happy throwing

Susie
