Welcome Carol !!! Great to have you join us. I'm with Net, Gardening and Canning are not hard, but they are very rewarding. I live in the city also with a small yard. I do all of my gardening 45 min or so away at my parents farm and I can a lot of our food. Canned tomatoes are so simple, I do juice, stewed and a generic V-8. You're making a plunge in the right direction and you will reap benefits in your health. If you have any questions, ask, someone on the team has the knowledge to answer.

Gardening & canning are not that hard.
Frozen tomatoes are okay, I guess. But, I love my canned tomatoes!!! I use them in lots of dishes. That is the 1 thing that I can't have enough of !!!!

Welcome to the team. I'm a gardener, but totally clueless about preserving/canning foods. In that respect I'm a lurker too and try to learn from the pros. =)

I'm single, never gardened, and mostly am joining this team to learn more about safely preserving and stockpiling 101. I have always lived in a city apartment with flower pots on my balcony - that was what I called "gardening" - until now. Would like to learn some basic survival / preparedness food skills. I already know how to watch expiration dates on canned goods; but I have this idea there's more to it than that, LOL . . . i.e. food does NOT come from the grocery store.
I grew up in the North (meat and potatoes) never having heard of greens or jalapenos or tortillas or beans in a crockpot. I lived in Oklahoma awhile, one state away from the Mexican border, and became fast addicted to Mexican food, and collards and cornbread, and beans and cornbread. Anything TexMex is my first love, and anything crockpot is second love. I cook beans all the time in my crockpot now, and am learning from Sparks how to convert TexMex recipes into healthy ones.
I know how to cook for a month, a la Mimi Wilson, and have done so for new mothers, sick people, etc. I think it's ironic this is my bent but I'm single.
I've looked at emergency food and dried food on the net but those things don't really seem to appeal, i.e. using them up before they go bad & rotating stock. Some of that stuff I would have trouble finding motivation to use . . .
I'm excellent at sniffing out bargains at the store and buying in bulk while on sale. I use the weekly grocery ads, and plan menus around them. I'm going to invest in a chest freezer soon. I currently use customized Menu Mailer from savingdinner.com for weekly groceries, menus, and recipes, combined with SparkRecipes.com, and divide and freeze extra portions. So when I cook I really cook, but the rest of the time the kitchen stays clean (in theory) and I just reheat & prep fresh produce.
I want to start some seedlings soon, inside, and then (at least try) to plant them after frost. More than just flowers this year. But I think what I'll be doing the majority of, is attempting to find a community garden, coop, or buying and preserving from local farmers' markets. I've heard for example, to forget canning tomatoes; just freeze them in freezer-quality bags and forget all the other hassle. Hmmm; sounds good to me if that's doable!
