It is hard to part with the things we are used to always using. I am very willing to trade in that Victorio for the Kitchen Aid attachment. I do a lot of juice and sauces, so I'm excited that it should cut down on the time to prep the food. I just had a hand mixer up until my hubby got me the kitchen aid as a gift. I have to admit it's great.

Lisa,

I have a very old Sunbeam mixer that I use all the time. I've been thinking of evenutally replacing it with a Kitchen Aid, but I really like my old Sunbeam with the double beaters and glass bowls. Guess it is probably more just because that is what I have always used and been used to. (I also still have and use a hand crank meat grider...LOL).

I haven't ever had a problem canning mine either, I do pretty much the same as below.

BUT A BIG THANK YOU TO LISA!!! My boys are cheering right now that they do not have to ever peel our pears ever again!!!

Try e-bay. Hubby got me the meat grinder for my kitchen aid mixer and I just need the fruit and veggie strainer attachment. When I get that, no more cranking.

I use the one that I use to juice my tomatoes, Victorio. I did it with my apples for apple sauce and don't see why it wouldn't work for pears. It was hard on the hands to peel and slice the pears and after this trick, I'll never go back to the old way. I did sauce, pear honey and pear halves too, I put marchinno cherries in my pears to make them pink for my kids.

Lisa,

What do you mean by a veggie/fruit strainer? Just a regular mesh type seive or is it some specific gadget?

I canned about 75 pounds of pears this past fall including several jars each of sauce and butter but I pealed and cored them all by hand. Would be great next time not to have to do all that pealing and coring first.

Hi, I have canned them before without problem. Just peel, cut up and pack in jars. Also, chop them up, cook them in a pan until soft, run through a veggie/friut strainer (it will seperate the skin and seeds from the pulp) and put in a jar and can as pear sauce. Yummy.

Why wouldn't you be able to can them?

They do tend to get a bit mushy if they are precooked or overripe, so I would recommend not cooking them before canning. But as long as they are not overripe, they should be fine from the water bath or pressure canning boiling itself.
