Yes, it is a blessing when someone is thinking about you. I just have to make sure I use them. I tend to make big plans and over extend myself sometimes.

Hi, I'm from Illinois (Zone 5). I started to can two years ago, but last year I didn't have a very good crop and did not do very much canning. I also have a food dehydrator and use it mostly for herbs and jerky. I'm hoping to gain some new recipes and tips about canning by joining this group. I just had about 5 boxes of jars donated to me, so I really need to do some canning this year.

Hi and Welcome to the team. We have a couple of dehydrator threads, what did you do today thread and recipe thread. If you need anything, ask, we'll help. I also use a pressure canner. Wouldn't trade it for the world.

Hi, I'm new to the group. I'm Kay, mom of 7 great children (I joined SP after my 6th was born and my 7th came along before I reached my goal weight), and grandma to 1, MIL to 1. Now I'm working on losing the baby weight once again.

I've been canning, freezing, and drying since I was a child at home. I learned most of what I learned from my mom. I still remember the first batch of tomatoes I canned while my mom was gone. That feeling of accomplishment was wonderful!

I've canned pickles, green tomato pickles, apple pie in a jar, and a few other things. I have a pressure canner but not used it in quite a few years. I also enjoy drying herbs, carrots, and apples. I use the ideas from Mary Bell's Dehydrator Cookbook. It is great! I also freeze veggies from our garden.

Kay

Hi Joycee33!! Welcome to the Team. I too have my seeds started in a cold frame outside. They are calling for snow flurries in the thumb of Michigan tomorrow.
We have a couple of links about food dehydrator and dehydrating food, check them out, as I recall there are some ideas about what is the best dehydrator. Take care and if you need anything, just ask. We'll help all we can.

Hi there,
I'm new to the group, I live in Eastern Washington. I've canned tomatoes and done a little drying and freezing. I'm hoping to do a lot more this year. Someone commented on the Ball canning book-I also have this book and find it very helpful.
I have tomatoes and peppers started inside, but we got snow just last week--not quite planting time!
Does anyone have any recommendations/thoughts on a food dehydrator?

Hello, Glad to have found this group. I have been canning since I was a teen (many years ago) Started out helping my Grandmother & Mom canning and when I was grown it was just natural to plant my own garden & can & freeze veggies. We also have several fruit trees & I love making jam and giving it as gifts.

Hello all, I'm in Milwaukie, OR and I did my first batch of freezer jam this year. I've done pear butter long ago in the past and my mother used to do TONS of canning when I was little, but had stopped by the time I was old enough to be teachable. Trying to train myself now on the path to becoming more self sustaining in my eating habits.

wE'LL help all we can. A good place to start is a good canning book, I like Ball Blue Book of Canning, very reliable. Then if you have any questions give a shout out. Also if you know you want to can a specific food, google canning that type of food and it will lead you to a step by step process.

Welcome, Glad you found us. Jump in and chat anywhere. Canning is not to much work, isn't it wonderful to pop open jar of tomatoes you canned and make chili or goulash? If you have any questions, ask. Someone will answer you.

Hello all - I joined this group and thought I'd say hi. Tried canning this year for the first time. Tomatoes galore. Many of my friends said it was too much trouble but I told them over and over it was no more trouble than doing what I'd normally do for cooking tomatoes. The only extra step was boiling the jar. I'd still peel, chop and cook them just the same.

Mom used to can jelly years ago and an older one in my congregation used to can everything and had some helpful tips.

I took the basil in from the garden and deck into a cellar window and keeping that over winter.

That's my story and just waiting till spring thaw! Going to start some plants down the cellar over the next few months to get a head start - that's another team but many of you are probably there too :)
