Celebrating my dad's 94th. He is doing great. He said there is a few other men in their 90s where he lives and he feels blessed with his health so far. His favorite foods, bacon, cheese and steak.

Boring morning -
Strength training, laundry, dishwashing, cleaning out the fridge, finishing a painting job, and petting the sweet little cat curled up on my lap.
Exciting afternoon -
Making vitamin D and building a sand beast at a beach in Connecticut until my boyfriend gets up here and drops his kids off at summer camp. Then we'll have the evening together, first I've seen him in two weeks. Long distance sucks!

catching up on emails, dropped some clothes off at the resale store that benefits the local women's shelter and picked up some items there as well. Did an hour of weeding at the church building.

raised bed kits on sale! they had two left and Dear Hubby bought both for me!! YAY!! And he found someone who can supply me with some horse manure, maybe my roses will do better now. That gives me rabbit, and horse, now I just need to find someone with some cow. My compost pile needs expanding. YAY!! Now just where to put it?
This is so exciting for me. I'm looking forward to try my hand at a fall garden this year. I got tomatoes coming out our ears. yes! yes! yes!
OH and I almost forgot. DH bought me 3 orchids as a surprise love gift. How awesome is that!

Kale is very easy to grow. I even grow them in the summer since they can tolerate the heat very well plus they i love the dark green color in the garden. Taste suffers during the warmer months but I love it for Kale chips, juices and to make Mallum.

Where I live in Massachusetts, kale grows effortlessly. It's the city's favorite ornamental to plant around town!

I hope your garden goes well. Hard to imagine trying to garden in such a severe drought. It gets bad enough here when we have a dry Summer, with trying to water just the plants and the dry ground around pulling all the moisture away like a sponge. In those years, my container plants did better than the ones in the ground.

I did boil some last year and have it stored, but then I read it can be slightly poisonous to humans if sprayed on edible parts of veggies and fruits. Well, that news stopped me from using it!

Supposedly you can boil rhubarb leaves in water and use it as a spray against powdery mildew, downy mildew, and other fungus diseases.

Thanks to everyone who participated in the April "Eating the Rainbow" challenge. There were 18 members who did this, and 3 did it almost every day - IMAHAPPYSTEPPER, AUDREY-A*NEW*ME, and LEMONHEAD24
Hopefully soon the produce we'll be eating will be ones we've grown ourselves (of course, those who live in warmer climates than I do here in zone 5 may ALREADY be enjoying their own home grown veggies!) Though I still have canned tomatoes, pickles, and jams that I made last year from my garden that I'm enjoying, but I can't wait until I can taste that first ripe tomato fresh from the garden!

I love the idea of having shade only for overhead light - dunno why I've never thought of that, since the whole world has figured out awnings that shade your windows in the summer but not winter. Cool!

Thanks Cathy those were good ideas I will try the succession planting with radishes but I'm going to put some in at the same time as the radishes too. My gardens do have natural shade from a tree. I'll be sure to plant slow bolt varieties.

I haven't done it but I know they sell lettuce plants like that at the garden stores. And I've read where some people will double crop by planting radishes first, then when they pull out the radishes, they plant lettuce plants in their place.

To help prevent lettuce from bolting when the weather turns hot, you can also provide them some shade from the midday sun. Just put blocks (cinderblocks work great) at the end of the rows and in the middle depending on how long your rows are - high enough so they are above the plants, and put boards on top of the blocks. This allows the plants to get morning and afternoon sun, but shields them from the most intense sunlight in the middle of the day.

Does anyone plant lettuce seed early in small peat pots and set them out in April. I'm in IN and by the time my plants are really producing it gets really hot and they want to bolt. I'm wondering if I put some seeds in little pots now and set them out in a month they will be ahead of what I direct seed.

Margie from KS good luck with your worms. I've had a colony of them for about 4 years now. They are in my garage right now but I will move them to a shaded spot outside when it gets a bit warmer. Right now they are cold and not eating a whole lot but they really digest the garbage when it gets warm. I do not keep them in the house because they get other larva in them that turn into flying bugs and that is not good in the house.

My worms arrived yesterday and looked pretty good! I ended up ordering them online from WormsEtc as the local bait shop did not have the correct variety. I keep peeking at them in the container. I splurged and bought an official Worm Farm also because I had an interesting talk with a woman several years ago that was really promoting how great it was. Now I just have to learn patience! emoticon

I did not have good luck with worm composting in my apartment - couldn't keep it dry enough I guess. I'll be curious to hear stories of your worm farm!

Yesterday I went to a garden center and bought some flower seeds. Our yard too shady for garden. DD went along though and bought plenty of veggie seeds. She lives in the country and has huge garden I help with regularly.

AND -- I broke down and bought a Worm Farm online. Can't wait until it arrives. My freezer is loaded with compost materials I can feed the worms or take to DD's when we empty her rolling barrel composter this spring. Still have to buy the worms though. Haven't decided, but I know of a bait shop that has very nice healthy looking ones. Will talk to them more about their smaller red ones.

I love seed shopping. I used to have a community garden in Chicago and we'd get together for a soup-and-catalogs day in the bitter cold winter, and we'd warm ourselves with hot soup and good company and dreams of plants thriving in the summer sun. Ahhh...

Hope you have a great garden this year!! I'm getting ready to start some seeds too and finish shopping for the rest. Hope to be ready to hit the ground running (literally) once Spring is here.

Snow day in Massachusetts today, and I'm going to use it to start some seeds. Looks like this will be my last summer with a garden, at last for a while, so I'm planning a bang up year.

dug up the tuberoses from the front bed before the ground freezes. Yesterday we tilled up the garden and added lots of chopped leaves (as many as we could) and then tilled them in too so they could start breaking down over the winter. We still have the front bed to till up and till leaves into, now that the bulbs are out (we're redoing that one, supposed to do so this year but my broken ankle caused us to postpone that until next year). Hopefully the weather won't be too cold for too long so that the ground freezes hard (supposed to be in low 20s tomorrow with a wind chill in single digits and not get above freezing until Thursday). But if it does, I'll just store the bags of leaves until Spring and till everything in then.

Pulled more weeds, made low sugar strawberry jam, fed the tame squirrels (did I tame them or did they train me?). Went to brother's for Mom's 75th birthday party.
