I love the idea of having shade only for overhead light - dunno why I've never thought of that, since the whole world has figured out awnings that shade your windows in the summer but not winter. Cool!

Thanks Cathy those were good ideas I will try the succession planting with radishes but I'm going to put some in at the same time as the radishes too. My gardens do have natural shade from a tree. I'll be sure to plant slow bolt varieties.

I haven't done it but I know they sell lettuce plants like that at the garden stores. And I've read where some people will double crop by planting radishes first, then when they pull out the radishes, they plant lettuce plants in their place.

To help prevent lettuce from bolting when the weather turns hot, you can also provide them some shade from the midday sun. Just put blocks (cinderblocks work great) at the end of the rows and in the middle depending on how long your rows are - high enough so they are above the plants, and put boards on top of the blocks. This allows the plants to get morning and afternoon sun, but shields them from the most intense sunlight in the middle of the day.

Does anyone plant lettuce seed early in small peat pots and set them out in April. I'm in IN and by the time my plants are really producing it gets really hot and they want to bolt. I'm wondering if I put some seeds in little pots now and set them out in a month they will be ahead of what I direct seed.

Margie from KS good luck with your worms. I've had a colony of them for about 4 years now. They are in my garage right now but I will move them to a shaded spot outside when it gets a bit warmer. Right now they are cold and not eating a whole lot but they really digest the garbage when it gets warm. I do not keep them in the house because they get other larva in them that turn into flying bugs and that is not good in the house.

My worms arrived yesterday and looked pretty good! I ended up ordering them online from WormsEtc as the local bait shop did not have the correct variety. I keep peeking at them in the container. I splurged and bought an official Worm Farm also because I had an interesting talk with a woman several years ago that was really promoting how great it was. Now I just have to learn patience! emoticon

I did not have good luck with worm composting in my apartment - couldn't keep it dry enough I guess. I'll be curious to hear stories of your worm farm!

Yesterday I went to a garden center and bought some flower seeds. Our yard too shady for garden. DD went along though and bought plenty of veggie seeds. She lives in the country and has huge garden I help with regularly.

AND -- I broke down and bought a Worm Farm online. Can't wait until it arrives. My freezer is loaded with compost materials I can feed the worms or take to DD's when we empty her rolling barrel composter this spring. Still have to buy the worms though. Haven't decided, but I know of a bait shop that has very nice healthy looking ones. Will talk to them more about their smaller red ones.

Doing a happy dance! emoticon

I love seed shopping. I used to have a community garden in Chicago and we'd get together for a soup-and-catalogs day in the bitter cold winter, and we'd warm ourselves with hot soup and good company and dreams of plants thriving in the summer sun. Ahhh...

Hope you have a great garden this year!! I'm getting ready to start some seeds too and finish shopping for the rest. Hope to be ready to hit the ground running (literally) once Spring is here.

Snow day in Massachusetts today, and I'm going to use it to start some seeds. Looks like this will be my last summer with a garden, at last for a while, so I'm planning a bang up year.

dug up the tuberoses from the front bed before the ground freezes. Yesterday we tilled up the garden and added lots of chopped leaves (as many as we could) and then tilled them in too so they could start breaking down over the winter. We still have the front bed to till up and till leaves into, now that the bulbs are out (we're redoing that one, supposed to do so this year but my broken ankle caused us to postpone that until next year). Hopefully the weather won't be too cold for too long so that the ground freezes hard (supposed to be in low 20s tomorrow with a wind chill in single digits and not get above freezing until Thursday). But if it does, I'll just store the bags of leaves until Spring and till everything in then.

Great progress Golddusttwin. Today is sunny, not too hot, so looking forward to weeding. Not something I enjoyed last year, but when you haven't been able to do something for 2 months, suddenly you look forward to it.
PT is going great, already making some progress. I appreciate all the help I received from friends and even more offers to help. But I have to say that I'm glad I am back to being able to do most things myself now.

Rain is coming so enjoy today while you can! Gardening should be called "The Never-ending Story"

Today I am grateful for: the cool quiet of the morning AND
That we live in MN...with its .limited time only for blooming plants so we enjoy it to the fullest
We do enjoy all the seasons here...from the Spring with daffodils, tulips and lilacs blooming

to the summer with all the fresh fruits: strawberries, blueberries, melons, veggies, etc and the daylilies, coneflowers, liatris, and roses blooming

to fall/autumn with the chrysanthemums holding court in the gardens as the leaves of red and gold drift slowly down in their colorful dance

to Winter with its blanket of snow that shows us the beauty of flocked trees, ice covered branches that sparkle in the sunlight, the crisp air and the bones of the garden on display

driveway and step have been completed, garage door trim painted and now the trim & molding repair on the kitchen door before painting and then on to working on the roof overhang over the steps

Off the medical boot and starting therapy today to regain flexibility in my ankle. At least the break has healed enough to do this. Not looking forward to therapy - I hate it when I don't know what to expect - but I am looking forward to being able to do things again after not using it for 2 months.

Yeah.. I have to get my weekly therapeutic massages. It helps my body tremendously with managing pain (since have the awful fibromyalgia).

I am thinking of going to the Farmers Market today a little later. Other than that, not much planned!!!

I'm so impressed! That's quite the accomplishment for four hours of work!

Hubby and I set aside this da for us. We looked at property in the morning and the went and had a special lunch. Window shopped and came on home to just relax. This is not our normal weekend as we would be working the market in the heat

I had some border dahlias that I grew from seed a few years ago which have been fruitful and multiplying.
They were in a box in my basement, and because of breaking my ankle, never got planted. A friend was kind enough to offer to pick me up and take me to the church building where I had planted a circle flower bed (4 sections of flowers, with paths inbetween and around the weeping cherry I planted in the center), and which was overgrown with weeds since I was laid up. We worked for 4 hours, pulled 8 black garbage bags full of weeds, then planted the bulbs, which were still sprouting and turning darker green. Figure that they have a better chance of living there than in the box in my entryway! Was going to plant more perennials in those areas, but needless to say, had to change my plans for this year, and hopefully next year will get those in, and the whole thing mulched. That should keep the weeds down, just like it has been in another bed we planted last year.

Weekend of leaving-town activities. I need to empty the fridge, weed the garden one last time, etc. Not exciting, but it keeps me from getting bored.

I love the image of your revenge on the weeds that have been mocking you. I gotta get some lunch in my system and then get back to pulling weeds in my yard. Today is boring little tasks (RMV, post office, oil change) but I feel productive knocking things off my to do list.

I managed to water all the planters on my deck. Takes so much longer when you aren't able to get around on 2 good legs. But I figure that even if I am slow at the moment, I'm going to do what I can. Still haven't figured out how to water the plants on the patio as I can't carry water down the stairs and then onto the patio while getting around on crutches. Hubby has put buckets of water out there for me before and I was able to water, but they are all empty again so have to ask him to refill them.
Hopefully I'll be off the crutches August 1st and be able to get around better. And then those weeds out in the flower beds that have been mocking me all this time are going to be history!!

RUTHEY01 - my friend Ben was an RA in college in a rowdy dorm. He was bothered all year by trying to study while the kids just below him played loud music at all hours of the day and night. But then Ben finished his finals about a week before most people, and he borrowed extra speakers, mounted them pointing down at the floor, and played Wagner at very high volume 24/7. Revenge is a dish best served loud?

LOL. That would be funny to play some loud music for those that lit off all the fireworks and see how they sleep! Too funny!

WooHoo, I have some "Me" time right now. I am resting a little because my MS is starting to let me know it an be painful. So I am curling up on the coach and resting. I have been doing a lot of heavy house cleaning for myself and others, I think I need to take a break.

I did work in the garden pulling weeds and enjoying being in the dirt. My garden relaxes me and I find it so rewarding when I get produce or flowers to enjoy. I do have one problem, not bugs but my kitties, they too love the garden and sometimes crush my plants. My one cat is like a dog, she follows me everywhere and is always beside me. She loves to lay in the cool dirt...she seems to especially like my garden! emoticon

HI everyone!

We had a great 4th yesterday! We went to mother in-laws for bbq which was a lot of fun! Lots of great food, friends, family. Nice weather! Not too hot or too cool! Yes, we live in Washington State, so go figure on the weather sometimes! LOL

My mother in law loves to entertain and has some great recipes! (People did bring items to this bbq though.)
FOOD! Appetizers, brats, salmon, roasted veggies, salad, baked beans. Then there was cheesecake, ice cream with a choice of two toppings, fresh blended rhubarb, or Kahlua, or brownies!

Then, my husband (Lance) came home about 8pm in time to watch over the house and all the fireworks in our neighborhood! We got our fire pit going about 9:45pm and just sat outside in the backyard and enjoyed the show!

Have a great day everyone! Make it GREAT!
I am relaxing and having my Chai green tea, and may go to the Farmers Market a little later!

Yep. It's only 1:45 p.m. and the nuts are starting the fireworks already. Of course, they have been doing them for the past week every night too as a prelude.

When are people going to read the history books. The "bombs bursting in air" that Frances Scott Key wrote about were real bombs, shot from cannons, being lobbed onto US coastal cities by the British Navy during the American Revolutionary War. Or have they re-wrote that chapter of US history too.

Happy 4th everyone!

It's going to be a noisy one tonight since it is on a Friday night! Let the No Getting To Sleep at any decent hour start! LOL

US - We are heading to my mother in laws this afternoon to visit, bbq, etc... Then we are coming back home to watch the fireworks in our own neighborhood since there are quite a few that occur all around us. AND, to water things down and make sure the house is "safe"!

Thank you for the support. I would rather have a partial lung than cancer. The recovery time in the hospital will be 4-5 days if they do a wedge resection or 7-10 days if they have to remove the upper lobe of the right lung. We caught it in time. The mass is only 2.3 cm and hasn't spread to any other organs. There is an upside to everything if you just look for it. emoticon
