We live in Ohio, USA.
We have fruit trees, flower & vegetable gardens.
I enjoy trying to grow a new vegetable every year for the past 3 years.
Last year was my 1st time with acorn squash. I still have about 6 left over in the refrigerator. They really keep a long time in their shell. Great to just put in microwave then cut open remove seeds and add margarine (or butter) salt to taste (if needed). and eat it like a bake potatoe. The skin is not edible.
Also last year was the first time I couldn't keep the rabbits out of the green beans, broccoli(another new plant for me to try). They found a weak spot between the chicken-wire fence and the marigold border. 1st time in 15 years we didn't have gr.beans!
I am not sure what the new vegetable will be this year... but I know I won't need 4 acorn plants.
Hello, and nice to meet you all.

Brownie I had great luck with purple cabbage and brusselsprouts last year. We get the butterfly problem too. I went out every day and picked the caterpillars off them and if eggs showed up I was picking that off too. I only grew three cabbages and one stalk of sprouts but they all did very well. How do you grow this stuff on a hot island ( I am assuming you are in the gulf or carribean with sunshine all day and no cool weather). I did plant marigolds near these also and I think that helped.

New to this team..I've always done some sort of gardening from a girl, mainly flowers.....I have
a few fruit trees...Lots of hedges....and a herb garden...marjoram.rosemary..chive..tomato.
I hope to pick up more tips along the way being here...my island is mostly sunny all year round..but its the butterflies laying their eggs on cabbage....that is a menace lol..i've put in marigolds next to them sometimes....Not much help...but i enjoy planting!!
Stand up for high principles, even if you have to stand alone. To win, you've got to stay in the game.
Hi Karen, welcome to the team.
Chicken wire around the plants helps to keep the rabbits out.
My name is Karen. I've been gardening for over 17 years. I'm still waiting on being able to plant my garden this year. I always have tomatoes and peppers. This year we are trying potatoes and lots of other things. The kids talked me into buying some purple seed potatoes. We also have tried starting plants from seed indoors this year. The cats have not started snacking on the plants. The bunnies usually get the brocolli and beans. I've given up trying to keep them out.
Have a great day!
