Hello.... I am new hear..... I used Nxstage for two years..... In fact I was the first person who did it while I was asleep in our area..... I worked hard to let them allow me to do this..... LOL I did 7-8 hours a night usually 5 days a week..... I felt pretty good considering it is dialysis.... Not alot of water to be taken off .... I was in center for three months...... they always wanted to dehydrate me....man I was glad to get out of there....LOL One thing that I noticed after transplant was I didnt feel as well as I did doing 40 hrs of D every week...... and I was concerned..... it was those anti rejection drugs....for 6 months I wondered if this was the way I was going to feel for the rest of my life..... NO once the prednisone amount can down .... I was good to go.... Now its like I was before ESRD.... kind of.... Nxstage in my opinion is the only way to go....even doing short time.....every day or 5 or 6 days a weeks.... way better than in center..... I hope more people at least try Nxstage..... I did eveything my self.....my own needles, setup, everything.....NEVER had a problem.......NEVER..... I am glad to meet you.....

Hi everyone! I'm new to SP and was hoping oh hoping to find some help for people with kidney failure. I started using NxStage HHD in Dec. of 2012. So I'm still pretty new to this. I only found one setback. Since I've started doing HHD I find that I have a very strong appetite which has led to me gaining weight. Now I have to figure out how to lose this weight because I have eaten myself out of the weight requirements for transplant. Anywho, small intro just so I can ask a question. lol I ramble. I've noticed the last few weeks that when I start the tx I can taste the dialysate solution. Then afterwards my breath smells like ammonia. Is that normal???

You are allowed to post links to outside resources, as long as you're not trying to advertise or promote a particular business... basically, educational information is great-- if you check out our library, you'll see what I'm talking about. In fact, that might be a great place to post it, since that particular discussion thread is a permanent one... other discussions tend to fade away as time goes by. That's why the library was created, so important references that are frequently requested (especially by newbies lol) can be kept up front...

Hi everyone! Sorry it's taken me so long to get back to this thread but my email has decided it doesn't like me anymore and locked me out. I don't know what's wrong with it. It'll load, let me see that I have messages but as for as opening anything...forget it. Oh well, this is about kidneys and not email so.....LOL

For those of you that are interested in NxStage Dialysis, yippee!!! Honestly, it's nearly the same technique as the in-center hemo. The main difference is that with NxStage, you do dialysis more often (4-6 days v. 3-4) but at a slower rate, thereby allowing the machine to clean the patients blood much more often and more often means less impurities which equals feeling better, more energy, sleeping better, less down time after dialysis, less restrictions on the diet! Ok, maybe that last one isn't the best thing or I wouldn't have found SP LOL But, seriously, there are so many more benefits to NxStage v. In-Center that I will NEVER go back to in center. My husband is my caretaker, we do it at home on our own schedule...we both work...I just work part-time, so we work around the schedules.

The machine itself is so much easier to set up than the in-center machine. You don't have to have all the special drainage system, water system and what not that you have to have with the in-center machine. NxStage has a website. I'd post the link here but I'm not sure if I'm allowed. But you can google or bing or whatever you use LOL you can do that for NxStage and read all about it. If I were a patient and found out about this and my center didn't have it, I'd ask the doctors to educate themselves on it and bring it in. You can also do this nocturnal as well. Like I said, there are so many more benefits to doing NxStage than the regular hemo in center.

If there are any more questions, please feel free to send me a Sparkmail. Friend me and comment on my page....whatever you feel comfortable with.

Otherwise, if you are a patient now with ESRD, do watch your diet carefully as that definitely can help maintain or "stall" the process of kidney failure. It helped me for many years....now I have no kidneys.....but I have my NxStage buddy

Hi Janet, welcome to Spark and the ESRD team! I'm my DH's caregiver, and working to lose enough weight to donate a kidney on his behalf.

At the beginning of DH's ESRD diagnosis, he took a turn for the worse and needed emergency dialysis. They inserted a neck catheter for him to do Hemodialysis on a temporary basis; he stayed on Hemo until we completed the PD training, and his abdominal catheter was inserted and ready for PD.

He's been on PD for 18 months, and is doing really well as far as his UF and lab numbers. We just went for his first kidney transplant evaluation, and that went well too. Unfortunately, he developed an umbilical hernia that needs a full abdominal surgical repair, and he needs to go back on Hemo.

I'm fighting through the insurance process to get the necessary authorizations (a more attentive and caring PCP would help!). The surgeon said the repair needs to be done ASAP. DH's catheter is tangled in the hernia, so he's leaking blood; that led to him being hospitalized with peritonitis last month.

I've never heard of NxStage HHD, but am VERY interested in learning more!
DH may not be able to continue PD after the surgery, so I'd love to find an alternative so he won't have to go on Hemo permanently.

I look forward to "talking" to you on the boards and getting to know you.
Best wishes on your Spark journey... I hope you have as much fun and get as much out of Sparking as I have these last several years!

Hi everyone! I'm new to the team but for be it from renal failure. My name is Janet, I'm from South Mississippi and I'm 41. At the age of 15 I found out that I had a kidney disease. By the time I was 20, I was on dialysis (PD) and I turned 21 in the hospital after my transplant. That beautiful blessing lasted 16 years. In 2009 I found myself faced with dialysis again. I chose PD again but it failed this time around. So, hemo it was. I was NOT a happy camper as I had watched my dad go through so much on the same thing and refused to EVER put my family through that. It's funny how you change your mind when faced with death LOL I began with the in center hemo and graduated to NxStage in 2011. It was one of the absolute best decisions we ever made. My husband is my caretaker and we do dialysis 5 days a week. 3 days of dialysis, rest a day, 2 days dialysis, rest a day and repeat the next week. God has been very good to me and I'm very blessed. I hope only to lose the weight and get into the best shape possible, to be as healthy as I can while living a good quality life with much quantity. If anyone has any questions regarding NxStage HHD, I'd be glad to answer as much as I can. I highly recommend it over in center type any day. I have more energy....even with all the excess weight. I don't get as drained and have to have a complete day to recoop after dialysis....give me 30 minutes and I'm good to go emoticon I'm just excited to have found a group with the same issues as myself and similar goals. Please friend me, message me or just respond to this post if you would like to talk about our similar issues. God bless you all!

~Janet~
