Welcome Annette...
I took dance classes.. ballet, jazz, from 7 yrs old to 14 yrs of age. But that was a lONNGGgggg time ago needless to say HAHA.

I do NOT love exercising for the sake of exercising so recently I was thinking up ways I could find to enjoy MOVING and burning calories more... and bought a dance video meant to teach dance steps to various styles of dance AND to burn calories at the same time... it has a little club dancing.. little hip hop. little disco .. little salsa and a touch or hint of ballet at the end. I really LIKE it too. I PRETEND I am back in dance class as a kid. LOL

Nice to see you post again during breaks, Lynn:)

Welcome again, Annette. Oh boy I can see this team becoming hilarious too. Thanks for coming in here with truck loads of sense of humor!!

I too can trim my membership in umpteen different teams now for various necessities, laughter being one of them:) I loved reading this thread for the chuckle it gave me....

Anita, I am like you learnt long ago, curves are beautiful and am comfortable in my skin, most of the time. Thanks sooo much for the tips on dancing.

I was an Indian classical dancer from age 3 to 35. However, when it comes to dancing in the ball room (in spite of the lessons, I don't care how many people complimented me), I am very self conscious. Now I know how to work out the kinks. In spite of IPAH robbing my energy, I suddenly dance a few feet in the hallways - while walking down, allowing my neighbors a good laugh!

Thank you for your advice...I agree with doing it alone at first...although, I may have to give it a bit of a try when I'm doing rounds at work...If one of the residents wonder what I'm doing...I'll just chalk it up to dementia(mine or theirs, it doesn't matter). emoticon

What you have to do it literally feel the music inside of you first, just close your eyes, don't move just feel the vibration of the music, you should be alone doing this at first, because physical movement makes people feel a bit self conscious, until you feel proud of what you're doing, then you wanna show it off, so at first start in front of the mirror in your own room.

Lights are dim, you can transport your imagination anywhere you want it to be, you're Ginger Rogers and you're with Fred Astaire emoticon then when you are there you begin to move, just like they move, remember nobody can see you, you are feeling the music in every part of your being, and when you do this enough you learn to move and then you go out and show it off emoticon You can even play a movie of any dance you want to learn and copy their moves over and over again until you get them down perfectly. I hope any of this helps.

What can I say, I'm a romantic emoticon

Sooooo....not in the knees..Huh?? emoticon
I'm going for the learned ability choice #B. I know I have rhythm...I'm a musician...I just need to translate it into body movement. You sound like you're a mixed bag of all sorts of nationalities...
Me...pure bred German...tall, blonde and bluish eyes...I look so pale. Of course, working nights doesn't help with getting sun...I go home and hang upside down in the attic until my next shift.
Both my parents came over to Canada when they were young 20s. My eldest brother(there's 5 siblings) almost flunked out in kindergarden because he couldn't speak English...so my parents refused to teach us any German from then on.
I've got the passion...now I'm taking the lessons to learn the skill.

Well you see Annette, this is a question that actually fascinates me, I believe that we either have an inate ability, or a learned ability, we either can't help but to have rhythm, or can't do anything to get rhythm and all the shades of gray in between. I am not only mexican born for two generations, but I also have european blood and I was born and raised a Jew, sometimes I think I'm going to EXPLODE!

I have gone through what most wound consider horrible situations, and I still think like a kid but with wisdom, so I pretend I'm playing a game and I aim for the win, sometimes I win, but sometimes when I think I lost, it's when I win the most, cause it's only then that I can learn what doesn't work. I must have pretended so much that this was fun, that I convinced myself that it was, no matter how bad it seemed at the time.

This is what it takes to either have it or have to learn it. I call it PASSION!!! I wouldn't know how to explain it. I hope it all makes some sense to you emoticon

I love dancing...started before I could walk! LOL Mom put me in front of the tv watching American Bandstand when I could just barely stand! I've never had a problem shaking the booty and now my daughter is following in my path! LOL

I need to find some classes around here...that's my kind of exercise!

OK...really need to get some sleep....

Thanks for the energy you are both sharing on this thread!

I agree with you on the need to learn a routine...not change out styles of dances contantly.
O.k. latina-girl...how exactly do you get your butt to move like you guys do??? I'm a willing learner...tell me your secrets...I'm sitting at your feet!!! emoticon
Maybe I still need to shake my childhood learning that dancing was sinful...Not the way I do it it's not!! I'd like to look more sexy though. Is it in the movement of your knees...or your feet...Even moving in the rumba...I can't yet seem to move my butt right...Yeah...I know...there's all sort of crisis in the world and I'm concerned about shaking it...HELP!!! emoticon

You're too hard on yourself Annette, you're like that cartoon you have on your profile looking at yourself in that mirror, I remember thinking that I was FAT at 105 when I was in my 20s, but now that I figured out that my body is just housing my spirit, I don't really mind a little more meat in it. emoticon just so it's healthy.

I take quite a few of them, in fact that's one of the things I tell my coach not to do, I will go into a class and he runs the gamit on me waltz, viennese waltz, foxrot, and mostly all of the latin dances since I am a latino and that's what I grew up with, but the problem is that you have to learn routines and when he tries 8 different dances in one class, by the next class I already forgot what belongs to which emoticon

Thank you for the welcome...both of you. emoticon
Anita...what kind of ballroom are you learning. One of our instructors is very pregnant so we're doing waltz and rumba...I'd like to learn some of the latin stuff because my hips move like I've got a stick up my...It's like I'm missing a ball-bearing or 3.
They say they're bringing in bellydancing in the New Year...I'm there!!...I've already got the jingly belt thingy!! Took belly dance last year and never laughed so hard in my life....As I was shimmying towards the totally mirrored wall...I wondered to myself...who was that large, blonde, Germanic lookin' woman walking towards me doing the shimmy plus chest thrust move...looking strangely like a big hen clucking towards me....sexy, it wasn't!! emoticon

Hi... emoticon I was dancing around people's spark pages when I came across this one. I'm really enjoying what I'm reading. I've been winnowing out my teams and only keeping those that fed my spirit and gave out positive motivation.
Please don't be put off by my halloween costume...husband and I had a blast being Gene and Paulette!! My name is Annette. I'm 42. Mother of 2 grown children. I'm an RN working full-time night shifts on Long Term Care(which has its own challenges with eating and exercising). I'm also a musician and I own a sound production company which all keeps me very busy. I chose this period of my life to get my health in order. For fun and for getting a break from the "caring profession"...I'm part of a rock band that is forming...and I want to look smokin' when I do...I do have some vanity, I admit!!
Plus...to get more fun out of exercising...I've been giving my elliptical rider the hairy eyeball lately emoticon ...I've been taking ballroom dance(by myself) and having a blast with it...the artisticky kind of stuff balances my nursing life nicely....
Annette
