I somehow got lost on my spark path and I am ready to get up and get motivated again. I have been a member of the group but never really posted a lot. I consider myself new to this part of spark people. Thanks for the opportunity to be a part of the group. I love to quilt, sew and craft and need support on my weight loss and fitness journey. Thank you!

Hi, my name is Anita and I have been quilting since I retired from teaching about 11 years ago. I was on Sparkpeople before, but stopped keeping track and let things slide for a long time. Looking forward to hearing about quilters from other areas. If I am quilting, I can't be eating, right!!

Hi, my name is Barbara, and this is my third time to return to Spark people, I just can't do it on my own. I love to quilt and have been at it close to 30 years.I'm not going to go into my lif history at this time, I'll leave that up to future talks and blogs. I would really like to be a part of team. I am recently retired went thru a short bout of woe is me and now need to reach out and get motivated. I am getting many different crafts ready for a craft show in Pa. and have about 15 quilt tops to finish off some are going to be tied off and used as table clothes. emoticon

Hi my name is Didi

I live in Happy Camp California ~

Working on at least doing a block or two a month ( I'd love to do more )
and losing some weight before my birthday... ~

Looking forward to Fall... This summer is way to hot here its been 106 or more for the last 3 weeks... and my sewing room is very warm ~

I've found out that I love English Paper Piecing ~ for I can sit and sew in my chair, like I would if I were crocheting ~smile`

So I do have a few projects in the making ~

Happy Regards to you all

Didi

Welcome Tova!
That's probably a long enough list. I don't keep a list--it might scare the heck out of me! Right now there are at least 5 projects laying on the cot in some area of construction. And, that's not counting the ones in boxes, etc., etc., etc. And, don't even mention fabric. I am totally addicted to it and have enough to last the rest of my life, but still buy things that I get drawn to. I've been a quilter since before my daughter was born and she is 35 years old, so I have a few years on you (60 yo in Sept). Enjoy your quilting and our group.

Hi! I'm Tova and I'm a quilter.... (everyone says "Hi Tova")...... I have been quilting for 18+yrs. (Oh, this isn't QA [That would be AA but for quilters]?)

A little about me.....
1. I am 48 yo and been married almost 22 yrs.
2. I started quilting when my oldest was a baby. He is now 19. I have a 16yo boy and a 14 yo girl to complete the set.
3. I live in Los Angeles and teach high school Chemistry.
4. I stopped quilting 5 yrs ago when I started working on my teaching credential but not that it is done, I have gone back to quilting for fun.
5. I need this group to help me finish quilts and lose weight too.....

Right now I am working on finishing:
1. My niece's wedding quilt (she only got married almost 4 yrs ago) [At least she is still married]. Quilt just came back from the quilters and now needs the binding put on. That will be done by machine.
2. Hawaii quilt. This is a yellow brick road quilt with fabrics picked up in Hawaii last summer when I was sent there for training.
3. Crater Lake wall hanging. Bought when we went to Crater Lake 2 yrs ago.
4. Arches National Park wall hanging. Bought when we went there 3 yrs ago.
5. Sedona wall hanging. Bought 6 yrs ago.
6. Alaska full size quilt. Bought 2 yrs ago.
7. Niece's Bat Mitzvah quilt, bargello. Bat Mitzvah was in May. Need to quilt and bind.
8. Philanthropy quilt. Picked up at last quilt guild meeting but want returned asap.
9. BOM quilt. As long as I keep up and make each block on time, the next month is free, NEED to keep up!
10. Bind blue and yellow quilt that I quilted 8 yrs ago on long arm but never bound.
11. 2 Hawaiian applique pillows. Doug, dh and I started these on our honeymoon, never touched for 22 yrs until yesterday.
12. Have a table runner I made 10+ yrs ago that needs to be quilted.
13. Have a sampler quilt that needs to be quilted also 10+ yrs ago.
14. Boy Scout quilt for my 16 who dropped out of boy scouts (the older one made it to eagle but this was started 5 yrs when the 16 yo bridged). Needs borders put on and then quilted and bound.
15. Eye spy quilt also for 16 yo started when he was 7.....
16. Whole cloth panel of the United states. Quilted with THICK poly batting and now will be difficult to bind.
17. Apple core pattern for Doug and me.
18. Bargello for us.
19. Template sampler for us?.
20. Have flannel for Hannah but no pattern yet for her.
21. 4th of July table runner (was going to be for this year but too overwhelmed).

Is that a long enough list?

Depending on how you learn and remember, often it is in the "doing" that we learn how to do something. -- If you have a chance to join a quilting group of ladies (I did in Jan. '14), there is a place to learn and ask questions at no charge. There usually is a LOT of wisdom and knowledge in a group that gathers together to create!

I consider myself to be a beginner quilter. -- In the past, I completed 3 quilts on my own using books and 1 pattern. I LOVE the colors and fabrics and creating art. ...I've sewn since I was about 12 yrs old, but let it go when I moved from home for college & living on my own. When I married at age 27, my DH bought a sewing machine for me for our 1st anniversary. He's always been very supportive of my creating since he enjoys working with wood.

Since Jan. '14 I have completed at least 1 dozen+ quilts as part of a quilting group of ladies at my church. They meet most Thursday's and then donate the quilts they create. It has been so very encouraging as well as inspirational! -- (I'm younger by 10-15 yrs. of the ladies in the group.)
I'm NOT retired. My DD is still in high sch. & my summer job is working on the family farm. So it is winter time for me when I can sew and create. I have no sewing room, so the sewing machine is on the kitchen table. I use my bed to cut, lay out, pin together, and anything else requiring a "flat" surface." (Our house has NEVER fit with my projects & 3 kids! But it isn't like we can MOVE the farm!) emoticon

Thanks for the welcome!

I've got two twin-size quilts planned: one that my mom has commissioned, and one for my daughter's 'new' room (we're moving her into a different bedroom, and upgrading her furniture from the initial 'whatever works' we did when she was first born and toddler-sized). I'm looking forward to getting going on those!

Hello! My name is Beth, and I'm fairly new to Sparkpeople, but I've been quilting (off and on) for years. I have LOTS of projects in-process, some handwork and some machine-based, and I sort of cycle through them. I'm a professor at a mid-sized university, so the quilting doesn't happen much during the school year, and I get a lot more done during breaks!

I'm working on getting back into shape, so I think I've come to the right place! emoticon

Hi Lisa, I do a lot of stamped embroidery too, am eagerly waiting for some baby owls to come from Annie's. Have you tried the newest thread that is out that is two threads thick and don't have to divide them. I, of course, had to order some to try so will try them out on my new owls.

emoticon Welcome Grammie, to the group and to the start of a wonderful addiction. Your price for a class is very reasonable, but do look into a group of others too. A class is a good start, and there are many good books, (I started with Eleanor Burns). You can get a good machine that will do many things and they don't need a machine that costs a lot to start.

Welcome Grammie! That is a fair price but if you're starting completely from scratch, you won't learn it in one lesson. Also, some of the better machines stores give you free lessons as long as you need them.

Good Luck. Linda

I would like to learn how to sew. I want to make some quilted window coverings to keep my heating bill down. I have always loved quilts and want to learn how to make one. I don't own a sewing machine and feel I should do some research before I buy one. I do not want to spend a lot of money on something I don't need, won't use or will not be able to operate properly. I guess what I am saying is I want to start this hobby and go real slow until I get a feel for what I am doing and what I would like to do. I found a business nearby that sells materials and gives sewing lessons. I am thinking about going over there just to observe. They want $35.00 for a 2.5 hour lesson. I don't know if that is a fair price and I am not sure how much I am going to learn in just one session.

I would appreciate any input or suggestions all you sewers out there could give me. Thanks in advance. emoticon

Good Morning! Even though I've been on this team since fall, I tend to reply on one subject and don't look at the other topics. Just found this topic today so here goes:

I come from central Illinois near Peoria (home of Caterpillar Tractor Company).
I would be happy if I could just stay home and quilt all day but life doesn't work that way! My husband and I own our own business, which I run during the day while he works a full time job so that we have insurance.
I'm 59 years old and have 2 grown children, one son in law and 2 grandchildren. My dear daughter in law, Amanda, passed away in July at the age of 35 after a long fight with cancer.
I love to quilt and anymore most of my projects are smaller as my friend and I are trying hard to reduce our stash!
I've gone to Jazzercise since the mid 90's and am pretty sure if I stopped that, I'd have even more weight to lose (plus I wouldn't be able to get up in the morning--it keeps me limber.)

Hi I'm Dee. I just joined this group today. Here are 5 things about me:

1. I LOVE to sew! Started when I was 7 years old. And thrilled to recently get my Grandma's treadle machine :)
2. I live near Gettysburg and love civil war history and that I can drive there in about 30 mins.
3. 2-3 years ago I got to give up almost all of my "day job" (a framer at a big retailer) to start my own business long arm quilting and sewing (tends to make you fat though)
4. Also love to read and cross stitch

Glad to meet you all!!

emoticon Hi Geri, we are almost twins, I am 71 and sometimes I feel 40 or 50, although sometimes my health makes me feel as if I was 90. LOL Good luck with your weight loss and hope you don't have any complications from diabetes. (I have type 2, also)
Will be praying for yourself and your dh. Have a glorious day, Jo

Hi Geri - emoticon

So sorry to hear about your husband having dementia. My Dad had Alzheimer's, and my sister has Parkinson's and now she has dementia, too. That disease can be so hard for the caretaker and the whole family.

I am trying to get the weight off before my next doctor visit. Last year, she said my blood sugar was too high, and she gave me a year to lose weight and exercise. It is a real slow process for me, but I won't quit.

Hi ALL, My name is Geri, I am 72 yrs old, married, 2 grown children & 4 gr-daughters. My husband and I have been married 49 years. Our entire family lives quiet a few miles from us so we are home alone most days, we live in south Georgia.

I LOVE sewing either on quilt tops or household items such as curtains, cushions, placemats, etc. My only problem lately is my husband has dementia, not sure of the type yet but he requires a lot of my time. He asks the same questions over and over and also loves talking to me about life when he was a child growing up in southwest Virginia. His memory is great of those days but has no memory of 10 minutes ago.

As for quilting, I have made many squares of different patterns but putting them together and then doing the quilting is confusing for me so I stop. I have a lot of material and love to get at my machine and sew, it relaxes me and I loose myself in it until my husband tells me it time to eat or go someplace as he likes to do now.

I hope SparkPeople helps me loose all the pounds I have gained by sitting around the house so much. My doctor last week put me on Victoza shots which I dislike but he said if I do not loose 25 pounds or so I will have to go on insulin shots for my diabetes and I do not want to do that if I can loose the weight.

Have a wonderful day, Geri

My sewing room is a light green and I face a window over looking the palm trees and bushy greens. It is so nice to sit there. The light is good and when I look up I see all this bright light and wonderful plants. Now if I could only see the top of the triple dresser that is in there! Cleaning project was done for about 2 days and then it is covered again. That is okay...means I am busy. emoticon

Thanks for the encouragement! We love to travel, too - & it sure does make it harder to eat well & especially to keep up with workouts! I try to at least go for walks & make the healthiest choices I can when eating out. I'm also working at trying to be a little easier on myself & not worry if I'm not perfect!

We just got back from 2 weeks vacation & I'm slowly getting back into a routine. I'm working on painting & fixing up my sewing room right now - want to make it a fun place to be in!! Getting outside of my box & using brighter, more modern colors & fabrics. Then I have 2 projects to help out my sister & a friend & after that, get back to finishing up some yoga mat bags!

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Hello!
I've been out of the loop for awhile since we made the move from Washington, DC to Las Cruces, NM in May. I am just now getting settled enough to get back to my quilting! Here are some things about me:

1. I love all kinds of quilting, but am interested now in doing more scrap quilts & using up my stash - would love any suggestions!!
2. I taught yoga & TRX in DC & am hoping to teach here in NM, too, but haven't found any opportunities yet.
3. I just celebrated my 2nd anniversary with my best friend & husband! We knew each other as young teens from church camp in Michigan, got reacquainted a few years ago & married in 2011.
4. I love to make bags of all kinds & was selling yoga mat bags at a studio in DC. Have been thinking about setting up an Etsy store but don't have a clue - anyone have any experience with Etsy?
5. My goals with Sparkpeople are to lose 8-10lbs that I seem to always be struggling with, to find ways to motivate & help others & to be a hero to myself! I have been reading the Spark Solutions book & love the real life approach it takes!

I hope everyone has a great day!!

Good afternoon!

I am a newbie to the forum but not to weight management and quilting.

I am 54, live in upstate NY but enjoy my time at our little camp in VA where DH and I plan to retire with our English Shepherd/sheltie mix dog, Becca. (she's very smart, active, charming and cute)

I am a quilter and have sewn all my life. I just find it difficult to find time to quilt. I love it all - appliqué, hand quilting, machine piecing and machine quilting. I love playing with color.

My weight management journey has been life long. I have been a Spark Diet participant for months but haven't joined in the past 2 and I am suffering the consequences. I always struggle with 10-15 pounds. I am convinced that if I was not vigilant I would weigh well over 200 pounds. I am a food - aholic. I love food and have tended use it to cure everything - from physical to emotional ails. Getting physical activity in is not a problem as I walk, lift weights, stretch daily and participate in agility and flyball with my dog.

I look forward to being a part of this group.

Welcome! I can understand how you can become discouraged. I have found it easier to start one thing at a time. It takes 21 days of constant vigilance to form a good habit. That is why we have our monthly goals/resolutions (instead of a bunch of yearly ones). Pick one thing to work on for month (like nutrition, walking, strength training, ...) then add to it the next month.

We will also be happy to help with projects for your guild and remember, we love pictures.

I am totally new here, but read Beverly's idea of introducing ourselves. Let's see...

1. I'm relatively new to quilting. I belong to a local quilt guild and need to do things to stay in it, so it almost forces me to do more.
2. I have been married for 17 years (18 in Nov) to a wonderful and understanding hubby. We have one son who just turned 13. He's our best accomplishment!
3. I have been in and out of SP for quite a while. I seem to get started and then forget or stop checking in. Since this forum is related to something I really enjoy, I hope to check in more often.
4. I am only 40, but am on disability. I have multiple chronic health issues such as fibromyalgia, lower back pain, RSD (nerve pain) in my feet, depression, anxiety, chronic fatigue, etc. These keep me from doing a lot of the crafts I enjoy, incl. quilting. (I also enjoy painting, gardening, reading, movies, trying to crochet and knit, and animals/pets)
5. I used to be an English teacher, so forgive me for writing a lot and giving long responses to easy questions. I was also an educational consultant and writer, so I tend to write a lot. Sorry in advance! :)

Hope to meet some of you and make some new friends w/similar interests!

Talk to you soon! :)

Welcome from central Alabama. It took me over a year to get over my knee surgery. They forgot to tell me about that, but things are back to normal now. You can do it, just start slowly and don't try to over do or you will become frustrated. I suggest you start with the nutrition tracker and walking for a couple of weeks. Then start adding more types of exercise every couple of weeks.

Hi, just asked to join your group. I love to sew and quilt and craft and...well you get the idea. Just finished my quilts for the Minnesota Quilt Show. Hope I get to go, it's in Duluth this year so a little farther for me than most years. Looking forward to getting to know all of you.

Welcome to the team. You are not alone these days. I am in a slump, too, but I have found it much easier to think of losing 5 pounds. If you can lose 5 pounds 12 times you have it done. Change your habits one at a time. We have a monthly resolution/challenge thread to help with that. If you can work on one thing for 21 days it will become a good habit. I do hope there is hope over 60, I'm knocking on the door.

Hi, I'm from MD. My 2 goals are losing weight and gaining some ambition. Right now I'm stuck in a rut with both of them. I have 60 lbs to lose just to get down to a reasonable weight. No one to blame but myself. It's just bad eating and exercise habits and the weight has just be creeping up year after year. Is there any hope when you are over 60? As the weights gone up the ambition and motivation to get anything done as gone down. I need to reverse that pattern.

Welcome to the team. The important thing is to enjoy your quilting, if it stops being fun, take a break for a while. I would love to work with silk. Think I'll put it on my bucket list.
