Also, I completely agree about investing in a digital scale to weigh your food - it certainly helps you come to understand portion control & the like.
Another idea on learning more about cooking would be for you & your boyfriend to take some cooking classes together - do an internet search on line for classes offered in your area - you'd be surprised what you can find. It'll be fun AND you can learn some great skills!
