I love singing. The voice is an amazing instrument, indeed. For many years I was a soprano--sang in choir until I damaged my vocal chords--once by hitting them on a sharp bed corner (ever wake up and not notice your leg is asleep?) when I fell. The coup de grace was thyroid surgery a few years ago. I lost my voice for a couple of months and what I was left with had little power in it and I lost my range. But, without the surgery....things would have been far worse so it was a good trade. I only sang for my own enjoyment anyway.

I am a student at Florida State University. I didn't grow up listening to opera, but now I love to sing it. I work with it so much for school that I often listen to more popular music on my time off. It is simply amazing that some people can make the sounds that they can. The voice is an amazing instrument! Like some of your kids, I played saxophone in high school. ;-)

Wow! Where are you studying music? I am not a fan of the style of opera music (I don't know how to say that)---but I absolutely love the vocal clarity of the singers. That is stellar that you have been blessed with the ability to sing.
All of my children have been involved in the Arts--only 2 with vocal and only in High school, in addition to playing multiple instruments. One of my sons just graduated UMASS Amherst with a degree in history and german--but his real love was playing tuba in the Minuteman Marching Band at UMASS. My youngest is in a percussion ensemble which is the record holder for the highest score given to a percussion ensemble at a competition at WGI international. They've been in 1st place in their division for the past 2 years and will competing in a higher division this year. All of my children competed in the ensemble during high school actually--and they all had different primary instruments. 3 saxaphones and one was a clarinet player, in addition to other instruments (guitars, brass, etc) as it caught their fancy. My daughter is a dancer, of sorts. I had to talk her out of switching her major from earth sciences to dance. No jobs in dance, lots in sciences for women, especially.
Obviously, I love music and the arts. Welcome to the team. I look forward to knowing more about you.

You wore me out just reading how busy you are! Good for you for going back to school to get a degree. It must be challenging to juggle everything. I would imagine exercise helps though because it releases all those "fel good" endorphins. I look forward to getting to know you better.

Well, what can I tell you?

I'm 47 years old, been married for 25 years and we have two sons, ages 22 and 18, and a spoiled dog we love very much (he's my walking partner most days, but I want to get away from him to walk more seriously)

I am a college sophomore majoring in English/Communications, I have two elderly parents, work full time, and have a tendency of putting everyone first and not scheduling myself in my own day. I am learning how to do that now.

Not too much at all. I have 4 children and now 2 grandchildren as well. My youngest child is 16-the oldest is 27 (he's the married with children one). I am fascinated by the human mind as well--but I'm not so much into the crime fiction. I do like Dexter--now that is a mind crime show/novel series, but if left to my own devices, I'm a sci fi fan.

I too have spent time addicted to computer games but now am told I am addicted to Spark. Somewhat true. Played SIM City(?) until I reached the end and everyone left the planet. Decided not to start again.

Have a good day.

OK, Shark, I am back!

Colts, huh? I can see the fireworks and lights of Gillete Stadium (that's Patriots home) from my backyard. It's a lovely glow over the trees. I don't watch the games though. Whenever I watch a game, the team I am rooting for loses (as in last year, I only watched the superbowl--and last night, I paid too much attention to the Sox game.

I love to watch birds--I have a book and bird feeder, but I'm not very good at identifying those birds.

How many children do you have Shark? I have 4 and 2 grandchildren (10months, 3 years)

Just lizards and fish for pets now. I had dog companions most of my life, but when my last companion died--We were devestated-- (she was 19), we never got another dog. We travel a great deal--and dogs are not welcome everywhere. I miss my furry companions though.
I like wine, but I can't drink it anymore--take too many meds so the wine had to go.
I am sure I irritate my DH, but he never says so---
Love the treadmill and anything else that gets me moving. Playtime--
Addicted to the Sims---sorry to say, but it is true. My DH says I have a g-d complex. I do love controlling the lives of those "simmies".

You forgot to add that you are a major weight loss leader too!

I remember many years ago when my husband and I moved from Massachusetts to Kansas it was really, really hard. I missed my friends and family back home. I left my teaching position back home. I was out of sorts. I did make a few new friends and that helped. I also had my 1st child which helped even more--but I was still out of sorts. I started to use a clothesline instead of a dryer just to kill time and keep busy. Going out with my son in the stroller to walk around the city (1 mile in from one edge to the other in all directions) helped a lot and I joined an aerobics class as well. I think you are right that activity and eating well does help a great deal.

Our family moved to Washington just this past summer. I haven't made many new friends and I really miss my old friends. It was a cold winter, I was a bit depressed. I think that getting back to the gym these past 2 weeks and eating right has helped me more than just physically. I feel happy with myself right now.

My voice went with the thyroid--the vocal chords are embedded in that area and they were damaged. I went from being a soprano to a bass. Well, maybe not a bass, but my voice did deepen considerably and I lost the strength and power that I had. I lost my range as well--but I still sing anyway. I never let anyone hear me if I can help it. I think I sound like fighting raccoons. I've heard that sound--its nasty! All 4 of my children are musically inclined and my daughter is also very artistic. My sister encouraged her a lot for which I was greatful. All my children can play more than one musical instrument. Saxophone, clarinet, guitars, tuba, trombone, trumpet (badly) and a slew of percussion instruments--it's more than drumming. My oldest played typany and "auxilliary". My daughter played "malletts"-which is any instrument that looks like a huge xylophone that you can hit with a "mallett" and my middle and youngest sons played other drums, gongs, cymbals, shakers--pretty much all of it. They dabble on keyboard but I am the keyboard player. I wanted to major in music but I also wanted to be able to support myself so music was a hobby. It's the same for my children.

Thank you. It's very encouraging to hear others say so. I still have a long way to go with perfecting my technique, but I really enjoy it and it's a great stress reliever. I think everyone has an artistic talent, just in varying styles (ie: abstract, realism, etc). But in all honesty musical talent is a form of artistic talent. That particular talent I could never have. Musical instruments seem to be alien to me and my singing voice makes babies cry, lol. I have always envied people like you that can write and are musically inclined.

I like your art work--I went to your sparkpage and looked in your album. I always wanted to be able to draw well but I'm really quite bad at it. I am artistic, just not in that way. My "artsy" stuff tends to be more in the music area. My sister inherited the art genes that run rampant in my family. I was always so jealous of her when I was younger. Now, I am just proud to be her sister.

Good luck with the medical issues--I know cushings is adrenal but not much else about it. I have thyroid issues--hypothyroid actually--but it is because I am missing a chunk of my thyroid and what remains is being kept from functioning by thyroid medication. I had cancer and apparently it feeds on natural thyroid hormones so they keep mine suppressed. A lot of us here have some medical issues so you should feel right at home. I hope you do already!

And that perfectionist thing--join the club!

I'm a SAHM with 2 girls now ages 12 and 10 and an Army wife. I love to draw and have been working on mastering my painting, but no matter how good someone else thinks it is I am never happy with it. I'm a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to my art.
I have some medical issues that the doctors have not quite narrowed down (suspecting Cushing's syndrome) and have to go in a lot for lab work and others. Hopefully will learn soon, so I can move on to the fix it stage.
I am half-Cuban/half-American, but was raised in a very Cuban home. If you ever watch "Que pasa, USA" on youtube or lucky enough to get it on TV that's basically my family growing up, just with an American mother, lol. I have 2 older brothers and 2 very little half-sisters.
I guess that's it.

Hey Gwynneth,
Take your time--you know you can ask me anything and I'll get back to you pretty quickly. We've known each other for a bit now and I didn't know any of what you wrote here--I think maybe I knew you were caring for your mum and were married for many years but not the rest.
It's good that you are making time for yourself too so you will be ready for all those travels you have planned!

Hi,
I'm new to this topic so here goes, I have been married for 33 years to a wonderful man but unlike most of you we were never blessed with children, I had two miscarriages and then after several years I underwent four cycles of IVF, unfortunately it didn't work out for us. This was the start of my long, lonely and frightening period of depression. I have never really got over the fact that I couldn't give my husband a child, but he has been absolutely fabulous. No one can understand what this feels like unless you have lived through it, we are at the age now that we should be spoiling our grand children and when we see this happening all around us it cuts like a knife.
I look after an elderly mum (87), she is keeping well at the moment,we lost my Dad in Nov 07 with cancer, started off with bowel cancer and then spread to his liver. We have to be grateful as he didn't suffer at all, he was in a nursing home for only 9 days before he died. Most of my spare time is spent looking after the home, husband & mum. Since I have joined Spark I am making more time for me, I need lots of time to read all the posts and navigate the SP site.
Look forward to getting to know you all.

Sorry I didn't chat over the weekend! Eric, my husband, and I decided that we could lay down a laminate floor all by ourselves. Well that means that everything in our tv room had to be moved around, including the computer desk! LOL So finally back online today! I have been keeping track of all my intake and calorie burning though so i can log it in later!

My mom was very special to me! Although not as together as often as either one of us would have liked! I am glad you have those memories of your grandmother! Those are very special. I remember my grampa al used to make us drink wine with our dinner when we went up to his house! homemade at that!

The deepest wound I have was losing my grandma. She actually was very close to me during my rebel years of drugs and alcohol and her being a devoted Christian did not ever lecture me but to tell me one day at a time. She was my "light house", my safe haven. She saw me marry a wonder loving guy, have 3 beautiful girls, and she past away of breast cancer at 93. I was her primary caregiver for 2 1/2 years at her home. While she was on morphin drip, I would curl up next to her and tell her "One day at a time". To this day her memory is so cherished and honored. No I didn't get over losing her. I can still see her soft pale blue eyes. And her stories of the depression era.

Sounds like you have the guts to be an emt! That was a great thing you did for your friend, some people wouldnt have done it. (believe me on that one) I do love it, I am beginning to miss it now-I have been on leave since my mum passed in January. I tried on call three weeks after she died and I looked at my crew and told them I have todrive, I can't be in the back. I cried all the way to the hospital (15-20 mins) while I cleaned the rig out and all the way home. I decided then and there I needed to take a leave.

My house was the one that everyone in the neighborhood went to. There were always a million kidsaround, I dont remember ever going to a friends house until I was 15, they were always at the house! While we have no Dr.s or nurses in my family-we have me! lol

I guess I am still to emotional, I don't cry as much as I was before but there are still times! But I hear the sirens now, and I do miss it. I want to go back so maybe in a little while.

Hope everyone has a great week!

My Grandma was an RN, then Charge Nurse and my mother is a LVN, so it seems to run in the blood taking care of others. Yeah, there is so much to learn about the body and people seem to think they are indestructible in their 20's. I have to tell you a story; My friend Annette and her twin Ernie had a party at their house, and after the party we were all hanging outside when our friend decides he is going to take off on his new motorcycle down the street. By the time he got to the end of the street you could hear the bike scraping the street and we all ran down to see what happened, we all got there and he had blood coming from his forehead and everyone backed off, except for me. He felt his forehead and looked at the blood in his hand and had terror on his face, I looked at him and told him, Hey its not as bad as you think, (but he had a small hole from the shift, with lots of blood coming out.) I covered it with my sleeve and told him not to worry he would be just fine. A week later he showed up with a beautiful bouquet of flowers. I actually feel comfortable with emergency situations. Or helping others recover. I hope that you are enjoying your leave of absence. Nothing to serious I hope?

It actually sounds great! I'm done being a caregiver for patients with breast cancer, brain tumors, and Dymentia. I went to all the hospital visits and have seen lots of what is happening in E.R. Mostly pretty boring. So sounds pretty interesting to me.

I remember the commercial...this is your brain...this is your brain on drugs! I think all kids should have to spend an evening or two riding in the back of a really busy ambulance! They would be so scared, heck sometimes it scares me!

Do you happen to remember that anti drug commercial, it shows a hot frying pan and someone cracking an egg over it, and then showing the egg frying, "your brain on drugs". Wow, I thought that was a good commercial, but then when I go up to the High School to pick up my daughter, I see a generation of kids who simply "don't care". And this is one of California's Distinguished Schools!

Growing up I didn't think it was the best thing in the world, having so many siblings. Now that I am older I can see little bits and pieces of each sibling in me! LOL Not sure if that is good sometimes or not!

The hardest part about being on the ambulance would be that seeing people I know! The best part is the fact that I can come home and scare the crap out of my two kids and tell them stories about what happens when you drink and drive, or what happens to you when your high on some drug and the paramedic gives you narcan! I love to scare them, hopfully it will keep them from gettin into trouble when they get older!

Wow, I can't imagine coming from a family that size. I am so sorry to hear of your mother. It must be difficult to see and hear of the human trajedies that happen first hand. I wish you the best in reaching your personal goals!

Ok, here goes! I am a wife of 12 years and a mother of two! My husband decided that he wanted to be a police officer while I was pregnant with our daughter, Madelyn Mae, so the entire time I spent weekends alone because he was in class. While I was pregnant with our son, Matthew Paul, he worked overnights at a food ware house. Lucky me!
I come from a family of 11 kids, I am the 8th down the line and for the most part we all get along. In January my mum was really sick with phuemonia and went into the hospital, a week later she died of cancer but she was happy. It took three days but all 9 of her kids were around her bedside. My family history of heart disese and diabetes is a huge reason for my deision to lose wieght, another is that unlike her I want to be able to watch my grandchildren graduate, get married and have their own children.
I work for the local volunteer ambulance department as a Nationally Registered EMT-B and I see a lot of things that I don't want to put my children through.

Bee,
you must be so excited about the birth of your first grandchild! I have one right now and he will have a baby brother to join him in November. I also have an RV and I love to camp even if it is just a few miles away. I have actually just slept in it overnight in my driveway or gone to sit and read, work in it during the day. It's my small sanctuary. I just love it. I love to read and to cook and I enjoyed baking cakes and decorating them. I wasn't very skilled at it, but what I lacked in skill, I made up for in enthusiasm. When you say "moved a house" do you mean physicaly moved a house? as in on a flatbed trailer or whatever it is that is used to move a home from one location to another?

I am 45 and from CA., have been married for 17 yrs., have three teen age girls. I recently adopted two pound puppies.
Had a wonderful career, but one of my twins was born with spina bifida. When she started Kindergarten, I became the caregiver for my loving grandma with breast cancer. She was on drip morphine and I was her primary care. My dad died of a brain tumor. Gleoblastonomy. I am the caregiver for my mother in law with Alzhiemers. I quit taking care of myself years ago because others in my life needed me. At this time in my life I am able to take better care of me.

I'm a happily married gal of 34 yrs. We own my DH's family farm and we have 3 grown children. Our 1st grandbaby should be arriving within the week. Very excited about that. We have a business we run from the farm and I take care of the office in my house. We recently help my son move a 200+ yr. old home from about 2.5 mi. away to a spot on the farm. We are all working at renovating that trying to get them so they can move in by late fall. (It makes a beautiful 1/2 mi. walk to their place for a 1 mi. round trip.) We are a close family and we stay extremely busy.
I love to cook, I used to decorate wedding cakes a lot & now I do it only for very close friends and relatives, I like to spend time at our camper not too far from home and I love to read.

I'm a middle aged divorced lady with 3 kids and an awesome grandson. I've had health problems but I'm really feeling like I'm making progress on getting healthier! Life has had ups and downs, but every day is new chance to live it and love it more than the day before:)

I am a retired special education teacher--I love to read--I love to write--and I love meeting and getting to know people, I love learning new things and expanding on what I already know something about. I guess those are all good traits for a teacher. The retirement wasn't exactly planned and was more a consequence of fibromyalgia & thyroid cancer. I was diagnosed with diabetes in January of this year and it set me on a new path--a good one--once I got past the anger about that diagnosis and all the other health constraints I seemed to have been developing. That diabetes diagnosis likely lengthened my life because it forced me to open my eyes and start to take care of myself and I have. I have one grandchild and his parents are expecting a 2nd in November and I'm pretty psyched about that. One of the things that my second oldest son says a lot is "It's all good". I used to be amused by that but now I find I am saying that all the time too. I wouldn't trade any of my life experiences, even the bittersweet ones, because they made me who I am, a happy and mostly optimistic person.

Hmm a few things about me...

I had my first child at 15 and ended up leaving school because of the pressure of the high school counselor of all things..ended up getting my ged and moving out on my own. When I was around 19 I had my second daughter who was born when I was only 26 weeks along so she stayed in the hospital for three months before coming home right before thanksgiving. I lived out of town so I basically just stayed with her at the hospital the entire time. Thank goodness for waiting rooms with showers huh ? 3 years after that I had another daughter who ended up being the first one I tried to breastfeed...boy was that something to figure out. We ended up making it up until she bit me-18 months or so.

After breastfeeding was done I decided to go to college to be a R.N. however once it was time to take clinicals they would not allow it because of my past history with seizures. So again I was just a stay at home mom dependent on her family.. Now I add into the mix a beautiful baby boy and I am done with having children. I'll wait for the grandchildren happily.

I'm planning on going back to college in 2008 and majoring in biology. Don't think they can keep me from learning that because of a seizure.

One way to get to know each other better is for us to share something about ourselves that really gives some insight into who we are, and what makes us tick. How about sharing something about yourself with us?

I'll go first. I've got a few things.

When I was 19, I auditioned as a singer for a local home band that eventually made it. What stopped me from getting the "gig" was my not being able to read music. They told me if I would learn, they would hire me. I tried. I couldn't learn. Wonder how different my life would have been?

I'm a published writer with novels in all stages of completion.

I make soup and meatballs and sauce that will make you drool. I should be marketing them (hey, if Paul Newman can do it with salad dressing, so could I!), but I don't have a clue how to go about doing that. So...my family and friends are the only ones that benefit from my culinary magic! emoticon
