Hi everyone. My name is Brenda. I have ALWAYS wanted to run, tried it and developed the worse chin splints. Let it alone for years. Got some professional advice and never got another one again. Got a letter in the mail from our health insurance carrier about getting folks off the couch and running a 5K last year in April (race in June)! Eureka! Off I went..... training for 9 weeks. I had been suffering with low back pains prior to signing up for the 5k. I just decided to do the best I could. Made it to week 6 and could NOT go any further.... fast forward..... February I had surgery... recovered nicely. Then I moved. Well, here I am now - ready again. Bought brand new running shoes today with intentions of starting my training for another 5k on Monday morning! (haven't found the race yet...lol) Wish me luck! emoticon

Hi, my name is Katie. I had a goal to begin the C25k program this past Monday but that did not happen due to some poor choices I made in bedtimes emoticon . I will be starting this week. My goal is to be healthier, lose weight and feel better. Also, I would like for the approximately 60 stairs I have to take to get to my desk every morning at work to not leave me breathless. I am not new to fitness. In fact just last year I completed the Farrell's eXtreme Bodyshaping 10-week program and continued for a few months after. Eventually, I let schedule changes allow me to get lazy and now have gained all of my inches and weight back plus some. I am hoping this program is as easy to follow as it seems. I have downloaded the app to my phone and purchased new headphones so I am ready to take it on. Wish me luck! And please...hold me accountable. We all need that!

Good luck,
Katie E.

Hi Team!! My Name is Stacy!! I have a very long story as to what brought me back to Spark people, but, right now I am gonna try to make it a bit shorter lol! I have been a member of SparkPeople since some time in 2009! I have also been a Stay At Home Mom since 2000 for the most part and I have also been in an abusive relationship since about that time too ( I am over it now it is in my past I am not afraid to talk about it but it takes to long to explain all the quote un quote reasons I gave my self for staying just know My 2 amazing boys where the main ones) Okay so this relationship led me to emotional binge eating almost every single day because he was an alcoholic and every time he drank everything became my fault!! This dissolve of or relationship really started on my birthday of this year when he managed to get us evicted another long story not worth tell at the moment lol!! So it was actually made quiet clear to me that this was not gonna work out in Juneish of this year and I was also diagnosed with cancer as well because of the stress of the whole mess I ended up with lymphoma and pancreatic tumors but that became my reason to change everything so not everything that seams bad is actually a bad thing!! I decided to take my health seriously I started exercising daily I got DVDs called the 10 min solution Xpress Workouts I started doing 3 of these 10 min routines everyday with the main ones being kickboxing lol, and adding whatever felt right to those ones and if I did not have the strength to do those cause lets face it I am fighting cancer and I have good days and bad days as far as pain and energy levels go, I would not beat myself up over it I would just go outside and sit and work in my garden or take a walk sometimes just getting outside would be enough to get my energy up and I would be able to do the 30 mins!! Now I have always loved running as a kid and have always wanted to do it more but bad relationship and more excuses got in my way! But now I am taking my life back for me and I am going to do this for me in fact I even started my own Walk/jog program yes I have spent countless hours researching the topic and I just started doing it but I wanted a more structured plan I do good with structure and plans and all that so I came back to spark people again and I have decided no matter what this time I am not leaving y'all are stuck with me now!! Oh and by the way since I started my journey this summer I have lost 53lbs already and I am hoping adding the running to my program will help me lose the other 47 I want to lose for a total of 100+ lbs gone never to return again!! I am sorry this is so long I seam to have a lot to say but any way this was me introducing myself to you all again for the last time!!

one step at a time one day at a time we'll get this done!!

Hello Team,

I'm Eliza. I just finished my week 1 day 3 a few minutes ago. I've never liked running, but have found with the right music it can actually be fun. We'll see if I still feel that way during the coming weeks. I'm trying not to look too far ahead in the program; anything beyond a couple of minutes of running seems so out of reach at this point!

Good luck to everyone :)

Hi there!

I'm Sara from Ottawa and I used to run a long time ago.

I stopped due to my son developing Type 1 Diabetes 3 years ago and have spent the whole time taking care of my child. I let myself use him and his constant monitoring as an excuse to sit on the couch.

I had a baby 4 months ago and I am not willing to sit on the couch any longer. Despite the fact that I am sitting on the couch writing this.

Just wanted to say hi. I'm restarting my C25K. I had started one in the spring and was well into week 3 when life got in the way. I've signed up for The Color Run 5K in Sept. I know I don't have quite enough time to train fully for it, but it's a fun run so there is no pressure. I'm excited to restart my training and have somewhere to be accountable and to keep me motivated.

Hello everyone!
I'm 42 and I have decided to introduce some running in my fitness routine. I have never run, I must admit, but I always walk (I don't drive) up to 90 minutes a day, so I need to get my pace faster! :D Well, since I'm now on summer holidays and the gym is not too appealing, I am taking 75 minutes' walks (brisk pace, about 8 km in a hour) with jog intervals, 3-4 times a week. For now, I cannot run for more than 30 seconds or so on each interval, but I'm working on improving this day by day, so that with time, I can run more than walk.

Congrats on making that decision Wendy. With determination and patience, you can do this. I am currently getting ready to start week 3 of the C25K program (I use the one by active) and I can tell you that you will be amazed at what your body will be able to do by following this program. ... Looking forward to seeing your progress.

Welcome, Wendy! The Color Run should be a good first 5K since it's a fun run rather than a timed run. Walking and running is a great way to finish.

Hello,

My name is Wendy, I tried doing the training for a different 5 K team, and found that it was a bit to difficult for me. So, I have joined this one in hopes that I will be able to keep up. I have registered for a 5 K Color Run in September. I have never done one before, and have always had fear about running, as I grew up with asthma.

I now have moderate COPD, along with the asthma, but I have made up my mins that I will do this, the best that I can. Even if I can only walk, I want the satisfaction of at least completing the 5 K. I know I can walk it as I have already been walking 4 miles, and have recently added some short times of jogging.

I have plenty of time to train, and just really need some encouragement, and advise.

Thank you for allowing me to join your team.

Hello! I just started over again (again) this morning with Week 1. I was never a huge fan of running or exercise in general. I always got the bulk of my exercise through other activities that just happened to be physical in addition to being fun. Fast forward: back injury, food allergies, and ongoing GI issues have made for a lot of starts and stops.

I'm really motivated this time around. ...not the motivation that comes with optimism and some perfect plan, but the kind that comes with frustration and a realistic perspective. Making myself do this is half the battle...or something.

That said, I'm here and ready to go.

"Why are we so full of restraint? Why do we not give in all directions? Is it fear of losing ourselves? Until we do lose ourselves there is no hope of finding ourselves."

Just started C25K again yesterday. I've done it a couple of other times over the last 6-7 years, but usually fall out of the running pattern. This time was actually easier than it has ever been to get started and it felt good! I'm not someone who particularly enjoys running, but it was actually kind of enjoyable this time. Love the C25k program and what it can do for you in such a short time.

Hey ya'll. I'm Natalie and I've just started C25k. Well, I've actually just started trying to build up TO C25k. LOL I'm coming from a nearly 100% sedentary starting point so I'm going to take a while to get to where I can even complete "Day 1." I wasn't even allowed ANY weight bearing exercise this time last year so starting this is a whole new world and almost surreal for me. I am working toward doing The Glow Run with my two grown daughters on August 23rd. If I still can't run the whole thing by then, that is okay. The fact that I can even walk 3 miles now is more than doctors ever expected.

Out of curiosity, is anyone else here over 50, over 200lbs or vegan?

Hi, I am Kelley. I'm not new to this site, but this will be my first time trying to run C25k. I used to play basketball in elementary school, but hated the "suicides" they made us do from one side of the court to the other. That being said, I didn't think running would be good for me until I tried it. I am 256lbs, and even though I am overweight I ended up doing it for a different reason than losing weight: I did it to help with stress, tension, and anxiety (that was April 8th '14.) It put me in a whole new mindset, like a very peaceful one :) didn't see that coming.

I am hoping that this works out. When I ran this year, I did the big no-no of not stretching :(
Now that I am all healed up, ready to attempt again but I want to "run smart"...so I am finding videos to stretch to. The way I felt when I ran was Amazing, so I can't wait until I get back into it! Thank you for welcoming me :)

P.S. I am using yoga for another mind-helping exercise.

Grab life by the horns, then take it and RUN like heck...

I'm Hillary. I'm on Week 2 Day 2. I signed up for my first 5K on July 4th. Luckily I've been exercising for a while so I can actually run more than I thought (never ran before) but so far week 2 is kicking my butt. Its so hard not to look at the timer on my phone app!!

I'm doing this in conjunction with P90X3.

Hi - I'm Janna and I've been on SP and lurking on this team for awhile. Today I did W1D1 and my goal is to complete the 9 week program and then run a 5K at my college homecoming in September.

Set your mind. Remember the 4D's: desire, determination, dedication, discipline.

Hi my name is Jessica, I start c25k this week. I've tried it many times before but always quit after week 2. I really want to do a couple of 5ks this summer and I'm hoping that will motivate me to finish this time. I live in NH and with winter finally over its nice to get outside.

Welcome!
Gingersunshine, be careful of running 5 days/week when you are a new runner. Your body does need recovery time. It does sound like you are doing well with it, though. Just be mindful of your body.

Angela, those are huge goals!!! Good luck!

Hey everyone!!

My name is Angela. I am in week 1 of C25K. I have struggled with my weight much of my life. I am athletic, yet can't really show it with this weight. I live in Central/Northern Maine. I am 34 years old and have been married almost 11 years and we have a very vibrant 8 year old son. I want to become a runner!!

I have set 2 huge goals for myself:

1st: In July 2014 I am doing the Tough Mountain Challenge at Sunday River in Maine. It's pretty much muddy obstacles while climbing a mountain!! It's a 5K.

2nd: In September 2014 I am doing the Insane Inflatable 5K in Portland Maine. Its pretty much huge bounce house obstacle things spread over a 5k area.

*Remember your WHY!
*Stop waiting for Monday, make today YOUR Monday!
*Nothing tastes are good as being thin feels!

Hello, glad to be in the group! My name is Stephanie and I'm in my 5th week out of 10 on my Couch to 5k program. I will be running my very first 5k on May 20! emoticon I sort of created a custom program using two different free podcasts, the Couch to 5k Christian Indie Broadcast (sometimes getting through some of the songs on that is more of a challenge than the jog LOL) AND I also alternate with the 5k 101 podcast put out by Running Mate. I run 5 days a week in order to get my cardio in and maybe give myself a little extra challenge. I normally look at the two programs and choose the one that looks harder to do on days 1, 3 and 5 and the one that looks easier on days 2 and 4. emoticon I take a rest day somewhere in the middle of the week (partially depending on weather) and another on Sunday. Also I am in a contest called "Lose to Win" with my mom through a local hospital. The winning team gets to split $1,000 so Mom and I are motivated! It's cool because they had a kick off dinner last month and we got to hear a speech by Ali Vincent, the first female winner of The Biggest Loser. emoticon

If anyone's interested on what I'm doing for my 5 day a week program I'd be happy to share the charts I made to keep track of my progress and also I just posted a blog about it for last week and this week on my page. In a nutshell, I spread the program out over 10 weeks (the amount of time I started with until my 5k) by using all the supplemental/ "optional" workouts that each includes. Weeks 1 through 3 I used the 5k 101 on days 1, 3, and 5, and the Couch to 5k on days 2 and 4. Weeks 4 and 5 are on my blog here:
http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public
_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5665366

Anyway, good luck everyone, it's good to be here! emoticon emoticon

I just wanted to say hello to everyone and introduce myself my name is Jeanna I am 27 and I have been struggling with my weight my whole life. I will start to lose weight and do good then just lose the momentum and just stop and gain all the weight back. my highest weight to date is 330 lbs I am currently down to 290. I have recently suffered a death in the family that has really shocked me back into wanting and needing to make a change. I really believe that this time I can do it.

Hello Everybodeeeeeeee:

My name is Heather from nova Scotia Canada. I have three grown children and became a grandmother in Nov. I have been married to Glenn for 28 years now..

I reached my goal weight on Spark in 2009 having lost 54 pounds. In the last 2 years though I have fallen off the wagon several times, busy with work and so on. Long story short I am up 25 pounds, and those are the fluffy type pounds, bigger than those lovely toned pounds, and not in the greatest shape anymore.

I recently really gotten back into healthy living, and I want to run again. So I'm going to try the C25k again...it worked for me before.

I look forward to getting to know you and cheering for each other.

Whooot whooot...Oh my gosh...I'm so excited. Day one for me...tomorrow.

Yeah!!!! I'm off the couch...whoa...is that...is that...my golly...I think I see the wagon I fell off its there in the distance. : )

Have a great night.

Hey ladies, thanks for the information. When I say skin burn it like a carpet burn but more from my inner thigh. I guess you can say skin rubbing skin because I'm not a small lady. Just to be able to lift my legs and jog was a blessing to me and with this program. I could have cry from excitement. Thank you ladies for your feedback and Iwill pay more attention because I did have a lung to collaspe on me last year. And I wasn't running but I was very active. Teamwork keeps me going.

Welcome!
Tagsuit2, I agree with Victoria about the side stitch. Try slowing down. As for the skin burn on your leg, I don't know what you mean. Maybe slowing your running down a bit will help that as well.
Victoria, glad you're enjoying yourself. Just take it slow and have fun. You'll go great!

Hello! My name is Victoria. I'm not new to C25K (gave it a try last year but a knee injury made me stop), nor am I new to spark. However, this is the first time I've done both together! I did Week1/Day1 yesterday and it was so much fun! I think the difference between doing this and my trying to run previously was learning to just slow down. I was pushing too hard.

A.M.A. (ask me anything) - I'm a pretty easy going lady!

Tagsuit2: In answer to your sore side, likely, it's muscle fatigue. Your lungs are doing some super stunts to catch up with you running and becoming more fit. While they need to get stronger, so do the support muscles around them (IE your ribs, diaphragm, etc.). My suggestion would be to slow down just a little bit so your lungs can improve at a similar rate to your legs and the other muscles you use while you run. I had the same problem with getting a stitch in my side when I ran. It was usually because I was over doing it. Hope that helps! :D

Hello everyone I am new to this program not to sparks and did my C25K for the first time yesterday and I feel that at 53 I will be repeating week 1 over until I can get my breathing right. Also can someone tell me what can I used for the skin burn that I am getting on my upper leg and what is causing the pain in my side once I get to the 5th run. This has really help me overcome my fear in running because I was afraid to lift one leg at one time. Thanks

Hey everyone. I'm Megan and just re-joined spark after giving birth to my firstborn in January. These things are definitely always easier with accountability. I have tried c25k in the past, and always seem to give up when it gets hard. I think this program is as much mental as it is physical and I hope to get all the way through it this time.

Hi I am new to SP and just started the C25K - I did day 3 this morning. I am new to running, I have always hated it but I decided last week to try it and surprisingly I didn't die :) I am 44 and have not been active by any means in years, I have lost 50 pounds in the last year and need to lose another 20ish.

Hello everyone.

I am Ashley, 28, from DC. Not new to SP, just new to C25K. I completed my first day on Sunday. I've never been a runner, and I really want to participate in the Run or Dye 5k in May here. I also want to lose about 40lbs (not by May, just overall) and would really like to be able to add running to my routine.

Hi - I'm Jan from Michigan. I am 52 and not new to SP. I am planning to start the C25K as soon as the weather breaks. . . . not sure when that will be this year. Until then I am doing some videos and using resistance bands to get ready. I started the C25K program a few years ago and didn't complete it. I think I got about half way through. This year I will complete it and my goal is to jog an official 5K this year by Labor Day.

Set your mind. Remember the 4D's: desire, determination, dedication, discipline.

Here I am. My husband and I are doing C25K to run in The Color Run this May. I am pretty excited. I was training to run several years ago and I sprained my ankle. When I was all healed up I found out I was pregnant and unfortunately was very ill during it.

My lovely son is now 4 years old and I am ready to do it again. I live In Oregon so weather is iffy right now. Sometimes I have to do the intervals on my Elliptical due to rain. Today I tried to go out as it was sunny but I couldn't get my jogging strolller tires to hold air. Took the Monkey out on his scooter and well it was interesting. I ended up running in place at time!! Then we went and looked for sidewalk mountains!

I guess the good thing is we got out and moving! Its hard at times with Monkey. Hopefully my husband can get the stroller fixed up and we can try again tomorrow!

Hi Everyone! I am not new to SP, but I am new to the C25K. I just finished week 3! I am 49 years old and over weight and have never been a runner so it's been a challenge!! I have surprised myself with how much I am enjoying it and how much I can run. Of course, I think I will be repeating week 3 again! I need to get my stamina up before I get into 5 minute intervals! I'm in no rush and I figure if I push myself I will just start to hate it. I hope to be able to encourage and be encouraged by this group! Good luck to everyone! :)

PS: I am in Michigan....any other Michiganders? :)

Hi,

This is my third try at Sparkpeople and my second attempt to complete the C25K. I hope to run a 5K by April or May. I did a color run last year and after that got too busy to run and gained 10 pounds really fast. I'm hoping that this time around I'll keep at it and lose weight. When I did jog regularly, I truly enjoyed it! I'm looking for motivation as I try to finish my dissertation and keep up a workout schedule as a working mom to a toddler!

I'm on Week 2 of C25K and I have found that I am enjoying it! I never really used music to workout before and started last week with using music and it really helps! I know that sounds crazy but, hey you live you learn!

Good idea starting back slowly. You'll gain speed the more you run.

Hi everyone, I'm not exactly new. I completed the CP25K two or three years ago and then worked up to a slow half-marathon. I haven't jogged in quite a while, so I thought it best to start from the beginning and let my body slowly grow in strength and thus avoid injury. My plan is to start the program on Feb 25 so that I can finish by the end of April, after which I will focus on speed and try to complete a 5k in less than 30 minutes by May 31, 2014. My PR at this point is around 33 minutes, so I'm not exactly a great runner! In fact, I call myself "The Blazing Turtle." But I would like to move from jogging to running, and learn to complete 9:30 to 10:00 minute miles. Once I reach this goal, I will then focus on completing a 10k in less than 60 minutes, and after that I will think about another half-marathon or possibly even a full marathon. We shall see, but I'll be hanging around this team for the next three months and look forward to getting to know some of you!

I have just joined the team.. Actually started the training 4 weeks ago. Have been having trouble getting to the gym so I actually skipped one day of week 4. I had been doing a bit of walk/running before I started the training. I have two questions. One..is there anyone who is running for the first time near my ripe old age of 55? OK..the other question escaped me. not unual.

Now or Never!

Good morning! I have ran off and on...between having children...for many years. I have been off though for the last 3 years and am ready to get going again. I have used C25K very successfully in the past and hope that I have similar results. I am registered for a 5K in May with a group of friends and need to get training. I am hoping support here in this forum will keep me motivated.
Thanks!
Jan

Hi Everyone, I am Erika. Just started the C25k running program on Saturday and completed my first week today. Not much of a runner, but I know so many people that said they hated running and then did this program and it made them love running. To help me stick to my goal I signed up for my first 5k in March and am amped to complete that with a group of friends. My goal is to run the whole thing. I am excited to be within a group with similar goals.

Hello :) I'm Wendi. I just turned 30 on Saturday. 2 days before I actually signed up for my first ever 5K.. It's in April. I figure might as well challenge myself.. Step out of my comfort zone. I've only ran/jogged 30 min straight once in my life.. It was last year.. So I know I can do it again. Here's to getting better at it and growing to like it and getting fit in the process!! :)

Thanks! I'm actually starting week 1 again, because a friend is going to train with me and we're running a 5K together in February. I'm almost excited about running in the cold. Almost. emoticon

I've been on SP since 2006, and I tend to come and go. I just started C25K on Monday, so I'm back again. emoticon I did Day 3 of Week 1 this morning, and I'm only a little sore. I may actually survive. Several years ago, my son had just gotten old enough that I could start training. Running a marathon was my goal. Then before I could start training, I found out I was pregnant. With our family dynamics, training with a small child wasn't happening. The kids are 5 and 12 now, so I'm starting with C25K and planning on working my way up to a marathon. Eventually.

Hi All - My name is Mike and I recently started C25K. Today I complete W2D1 and am going strong.

I had completed the program back in 2007 and continued and started running longer distances until I completed a 1/2 marathon back in 2009. This race resulted in messing up my knee pretty badly and in fact I dragged myself across the finish line. After this my interest in running declined and eventually stopped. As a result my weight has increased ever since.

I guess the most important thing is I am back and intend and sticking around this time.

Mike

Happy Saturday everyone! My name is Sarah, and this is my second try with c25k. I tried a few years ago, but wasn't able to complete it. This past summer I had WLS and just finished walking the San Antonio RNR Half Marathon. I hope to run it next year, so this is step one! :)

Welcome!! Sounds like you're off to a great start! Please do take a day off between running days…it is important for your muscles, tendons and bones to rest between running sessions especially when you are first starting out.

Just joined the team yesterday. I have already done week1 day 1 yesterday and today. I work 8-5 m-f and have 4 boys so I can't get out during the week to run. I do walk every day at lunch but I sweat a little more running so don't want to do that on my lunch. So it will take me more than the 8 weeks to do the program but that's ok. I am shooting to run a 5k in the spring. I have walked 3 of them in the last 2 years. I generally walk 2-4 miles 5-6 days a week.

My ultimate goal is to run an 8k turkey trot next Thanksgiving. I have been wanting to do the one in my area for a couple years and I finally decided to just go for it even though I'm still over 200 pounds. I figure running might be the kick start I need to get over this plateau I've been on and it gives me a goal to work towards.

Hi, Laura!! Sounds like you are off to a great start!! If you find you are pretty tired at the end, you might want to slow your running down a tad. It may help. Yes, do get to your running shoe store and get a new pair. You'll do great!

Hi! My name is Laura I am 49 yrs young, and I have been 'contemplating' c25k for several weeks. I joined the 10 mins of exercise a day team end of last week because I was having trouble getting my workouts in lately, and when i went out today i just went ahead and did W1D1, so there it is. I have been walking 2-3 miles 3x's a week since July, and did a bit of intervals last month, and decided to just go ahead and admit I wanted to give running a try. I didn't struggle until the last two run intervals, and then it wasn't so much a struggle as admitting i was tired, but I felt better than I have in awhile. I may do each week twice, depending on how I feel, but I believe anything is better than not doing anything, right? I plan to do my runs tues, thurs and sat, and will either get in a two mile walk or yoga on the off days, with sunday a complete rest day. I plan to go get fitted for running shoes friday, as I have walking shoes at the moment, bought back in august when I realized my very old 'running shoes' were the reason walking was giving me trouble with my heals by the third mile. We have a great local store who does all the measure, check stride, etc things that I know will be important for the sake of my knees and ankles at my spry young age.
Happy to have this team to check in with and come to with questions etc.

~Laura

I'm 56 too and have been a member on Spark since April 2008. Haven't done much until this year when after going up to my all time highest of 306.6 in December / 12 - I have shed 48 of those and am on my way. I have dreamed of being able to run most of my adult life. I do like to walk - listening to mp3 books - and recently read about walking fast intervals.. which I did and which then led me to jogging. I tried this last year and was so out of breath. I posted a question asking if I should still run and several people told me to wait.. so I did. Only now I think I can. Today I tried W1D1 - and I actually ran for a full 60 seconds. I didn't make the whole workout, but I did run four times (3 of them closer to 50 secs) - but that one full minute made me elated.
