Welcome aboard!

I'll echo what other people have said. I've spent time training mostly on treadmills, and other times mostly on the road. They're different but they're both training. Glad you're here. :)

Signed up for my first 5k! April 26. I'm excited and terrified at the same time. I am doing 3 bike tours this summer a 72, 70 and 112 miles. Those excite me but the 5k is terrifying me. somehow 5 hours on a bike doesn't cause me any anxiety and I don't even have music with me when I bike.

Welcome! I prefer to run outside, but I've been doing my runs on the treadmill lately.

Always wanted to be a runner? Then run. John Bingham, aka The Penguin, I think said it best:

"If you run, you are a runner. It doesn't matter how fast or how far. It doesn't matter if today is your first day or if you've been running for twenty years. There is no test to pass, no license to earn, no membership card to get. You just run."

Start by doing what is necessary, then do what is possible and suddenly you will be doing the impossible -- St Francis of Assisi

Welcome to the running side of the house. I train on both treadmills and on the roadways. I agree if you are going to run on a road for a race you should train on a road for part of that journey but if you have a treadmill option that will help ensure you meet your training requiremetns to run that race when otherwise you wouldn't then go for it. As a military member, I've had to sometimes just need to be flexible.

Enjoy your journey.

Hi IBLAC2RJ,

Welcome to the team! While doing some training on the road is important, the treadmill can be a great tool as well, so don't feel the need to abandon your treadmill for all your runs. I did 90% of my training for my first 1/2 marathon on a treadmill and did just fine. Just make sure you raise the incline between 1-2%.

I was always a road runner, and the one time I tried the treadmill, I fell off!

However, if you have access to a track somewhere, that may be a happy medium if you're not ready to make the jump to road running yet. I know in my case, actually registering for a race and paying the money is also a GREAT incentive to take steps towards preparing for a race as well.

You're on the right track! Just keep going! :)

I have always loved to cycle but I have always wanted to be a runner. In July I started the c25k program, completed it and since have completed 2 5k virtual races on the treadmill but have never completed a road race. 2013 is going to be my year. My goal is to run in my first race in June; a FOP 5k. I would love to run longer distances but I have to get off the treadmill and get on the road first to do it.
