I'll look for the message thread for NW Pdx, thanks!
I don't think I'll be doing the 12 week challenge this time as I would rather be more prepared for it, but when the next one comes around I'm sure I'll be in that one.
I haven't attended any classes actually, I was up late one night and saw an info-mercial for the zumba dvd collection so I bought it and LOVED it! Unfortunately, my body is not what it used to be so I can only do it every once in a while until I get it back up to par. I really really enjoy doing yoga though, stretching exercises are my "thing" as I used to be big into gymnastics when I was younger.
Janet - You are in the right place and posting here is just fine. If you want to you can also post on the message thread for NW.
Sparkpeople is a great place to become challenged too as there are a number of teams that host 10- and 12-week challenges. The BLC (Round 24) is getting ready to start a 12-week challenge on the 16th -- Registration is about to close so if you are interested, I encourage you to sign up soon!
I used to be Zumba-crazy (and still am), but have had to cut back (I need to keep it low impact so my body likes it) -- Did you take classes at 24Hr in NW? If so, you may know Julio A -- He is a great and fun instructor! I know a number of instructors in the area, having started with Zumba about 3 years ago.
At any rate...welcome to the team! Please let GAYEMC or I know if you have questions!

If I'm doing this wrong, please forgive me. I just created a sparkpeople account because I need to lose some weight and lower my cholesterol but I feel like I can't do it alone. I saw this group and was wondering if there was a group that meets in NW Portland?
1.Janet Bailey-Ryan 2.zumba, jogging, yoga, walking, gymnastics 3.I enjoy doing stretching exercises but am not opposed to strength training 4.I'm willing to travel to most places in portland as long as I can get there by public transportation (and it takes less than an hour to get there) 5.I would love to participate in a 5k run or do a class! I would prefer a zumba class or a yoga/stretching class but I do not have much money to spend on classes at the moment 6.I am interested in doing team activities and versus competing activities
I have tried doing weightwatchers online but that didn't work for me as I feel like I do better with a support group/team and someone that I can be held accountable to. I have a dietician that can hold me accountable but no team. I was hoping to find one I could meet up with in Portland. Please let me know if you can help me :)
Welcome to SparkPortland - the Official Team! Since you are here, you must live in N, NE, NW, SE, SW Portland or a local commuting area such as Aloha, Beaverton, Clackamas, Gresham, Hillsboro, Oregon City, Tigard, Vancouver WA, or another close-by area, right?! Well, we want to get acquainted with you and want you to have the opportunity to become acquainted with others in your local area, so we have set up this forum with that in mind.
Please answer the following questions so we can better understand your fitness needs:
1) Name 2) What are your top-5 favorite cardio-related interests (e.g., running/walking, zumba/dance, gym)? 3) Do you do Strength Training or Stretching Exercises? If so, what and how often? 4) Do you prefer to exercise alone, with a buddy and/or in a group? 5) How far do you want to travel to workout/participate in a group activity? 6) Are you interested in participating as part of a group in a 5K or other type of fitness activity/class? If so, what types? 7) Are you interested in participating in team competitions (e.g., as individuals, Area/Community Teams) in a SparkPortland forum?
A Kitchen Table Chat (see "sticky topic") has also been set up for our daily communications.
If you would like to chat with others who live in your area/community, you may do so by finding the message thread that most closely describes the area you live in. We thought this might come in handy and prevent you from having to scroll through posts.
As we are able to determine who are active team members, we may be able to adjust Area/Community Teams to include Portland neighborhoods (Ardenwald-Johnson Creek, Brentwood-Darlington, Brooklyn, Buckman, Creston-Kenilworth, Eastmoreland, Foster-Powell, Hosford-Abernethy (includes Ladd's Addition), Kerns, Laurelhurst, Montavilla, Mt. Scott-Arleta, Mt. Tabor, North Tabor, Reed (included Lambert Gardens), Richmond, Sellwood-Moreland, South Tabor, Sunnyside, Woodstock. Stay tuned!
