Sounds like a great goal you have. You'll find lots of resources here in SP that will help you figure out what kind of running/training plan you'll want to follow, and lots of help and encouragement along the way.
Keep an eye out for Spark Portland team outings - it's great way to get to know people from the team you might otherwise not meet.
SP starting weight - 285
I just joined SparkPeople yesterday, the day after my 29th birthday. I am currently the heaviest that I have ever been and none too happy about it. I have 45 pounds to lose and I have set a goal for my last year in my 20s to run a half marathon by my 30th birthday. I want to literally run into the next decade of my life with arms in the air and a big ole smile. I know very little about training for a run, but I am excited to get to know people on here. If there are any fellow beginner runners up in in the Mississippi area, it'd be great to know.
