Welcome to the Portland team Michelle. Spark People is a great site with a lot of valuable tools. I also recommend starting right away with the fitness and food trackers.

If you don't already I would make sure you track your calorie intake and fitness daily without fail. I attribute my losing 60 lbs this year due to consistently knowing my numbers. As we age our body's change and metabolize differently, even if you don't change your activity or calorie intake. I would increase your activity and calculate your calorie range based on activity.
Welcome to the Oregon team.

I just want to attest to the fact that you can lose weight...and spark people is a great tool
I'm 57 and have lost 36 pounds over the past 10 months. How did I do it? Lots of exercise, tracking what I eat on Spark. Joining in several different spark teams. Getting into the spark spirit, And being accountable.
If you use the tools here and are motivated and consistent, you can lose the weight.
All the best,
Sounds like you are just getting to that age where your hormones are acting different. You just can't eat like you used to; I know, sad, sad, sad. But if you eat "high test" foods, that is, no junk and a lot of green leafy veggies, and good, strong protein foods you should be able to lose weight. Cut way down on the grain things unless you are very, very active and physical. In that case keep some grain on board just keep portions small and make sure all grains are 100% whole--stay away from refined foods 'cuz they will add pounds--not to mention hurt your over-all health. Exercise is your best friend...I should talk, I'm so lazy and put it off too often! lol
Hospitals are terrific for traumatic care; for acute care. They do a really, really good job in saving lives when it’s a sudden bleeding emergency. But in terms of chronic care, they’re terrible; (that is) in terms of the illnesses that most people have, endure, that cost the most money, that last the longest and ultimately die from. -Dr. Andrew Saul
Hi everyone! My name is Michelle and I'm 36. I just joined SparkPeople today so I'm still making my way around learning what all the site has to offer.
I joined SparkPeople because I need to lose weight. I'm overwhelmed by the process and am struggling on how to get on the wagon and stay there. I want to feel good and look good. I've been overweight for a while but in the last year have packed on a whopping 35 pounds. My eating habits hadn't changed and I really hadn't become any more sedentary than I was already. My goal is to lose 50 pounds.
I look forward to chatting with some of you. I'm always looking for helpful hints, tips and motivation.
