Hi all. I'm K. Just finished my MSc in Biological Sciences working on population genetics and ecology of two closely-related topminnows in southern Illinois. Graduation is May 4. May 6 I start my PhD work on weakly electric fish behavior, ecology and population genetics! So excited!

On top of that, my PhD advisor informed me that we're doing fieldwork in a country in Eastern Africa in 2014. I'm SO not in good shape for equatorial fieldwork. So that's why I'm here - to rectify that.

I am not a grad student. But I'm old enough to be one (times 2.0833333304347826). I am back in school after a long absence and I am definitely a science nerd. I am reading a book on DNA for fun. I just finished a book on immunology for fun. I am a wee bit of a germophobe and occasionally make people roll their eyeballs, but I am not anywhere near as sick in the head as my microbiology teacher, who liked to start his lectures by intoning, "We are all going to die!"

Hello everyone...My name is Blane and I'm a graduate student in pure mathematics at University of Nevada, Reno. I'm writing my thesis on operator algebras with hopes of defennding this summer. Aside from that I have to drive 60 miles to get to school each day. I'm also a wife and mother. I'm a long time Sparker but just joined this team.

Hi Fellow Nerdy SP -

I joined SP about a month ago and things are going well so far (-5lbs). I am a Ph.D. student in Ecology, studying stream fish demography in dynamic landscapes in hopes of conserving freshwater diversity in the face of increasing water-demands/climate change. I love what I do, I love math and learning how to estimate things well, but like all of you (likely), I live in my head and less in my body/heart. Although SP has been incredibly useful for learning my behavioral patterns, I feel that I end up spending too much time worried about food/exercises - to the detriment of my dissertation. I want to learn from you all how you go about BALANCING the hard work needed for a dissertation and the hard work needed to lose weight and get healthy. I promised myself that I would be at my goal weight by Jan 2013, but I'm scared that my dissertation and publications will be sacrificed some to accomplish this goal - Can you do BOTH?

Anyways, I'm looking forward to learning what works for you all!

Hi everyone!

I'm a PhD candidate (as of yesterday!!) in Genetics and I joined this group a few weeks ago but haven't introduced myself yet - only because I have been in the thick of my pre-qualifying exam freakout. You guys seem like a great, supportive group and I'm looking forward to participating.

Hi peoples,

I joined sparkpeople a while ago, but I haven't used it for a long time. With a new millennium, I'd like a new(ish) me.

I'm currently working on a MSc, likely soon to be upgraded to a PhD, in chemistry. To have other nerdy nerds supporting me, I might be able to make some good life choices.

Hi everybody. I found this group, and it seems to fit. I accidentally gained 3 pounds last week over finals stress. I wasn't sure if I was going to be on probation or not. Then I found out I wasn't. So I celebrated. Now it's time to get back on track: both with the scale and with studying.

Hi Everyone- I am starting my M.S in Parasitology now. Ive never been super thin but I was pretty happy with myself at 160 so now i need to get down there. However Ive found juggling research, classes and ta leaves no time to eat so maybe sparkpeople can help me lose it the healthy way :)

Hi everyone, I know this team is kind of quiet right now but you all are My Kind of People so I had to join. :)

I'm Gina, I am a total science geek at heart though I'm between PhD programs right now. I left one program with an M.S. after developing all sorts of unhealthy habits, took a year off to work as a research associate and get my head back on straight, and now I'm in the middle of applying all over again. I tend to lurk but I'll pop up every now and again. Glad to have found you all!

Welcome! I've been traveling, but a late hello is better than none at all!

Summer tends to be slow on this group, but feel free to post and ask questions. Ideas for challenges would probably be useful--as you can see, we seem to have petered out a bit (below). I will go post my Rivendell mileage, though!

Hi!

Did an undergrad in Biochemistry and am now finishing up an MPH in Epidemiology, hopefully I'll put all my Epi credits toward a PhD next year!

I have found that school and health are not good together, so before I plow into another degree program I'd like to lose my extra pounds.

Hi everyone!

I'm a first year PhD student in food science. I've been on spark for a while, not very committed to it. I was pretty good about keeping in shape in undergrad but now that I'm in a program with people who love everything about food- cooking, eating, researching- it's hard to keep the weight off. Living alone with my dog doesn't help when I go for those late night munchies. I hope that joining this team will help out with that!

Hi! I'm Lori. I'll be getting my Master's this May (unless disaster strikes!) and I'll be starting my PhD in the fall. I used to be really thin, but the long hours and stress has made my metabolism slower and I don't typically eat enough. And my exercise time? Well, I'm trying to fit it back in :) So hopefully this team can help me to focus on weight loss while having others who understand the stress help me stay motivated!

I got down to my goal weight during my MSc, but it all went out the window when I started my PhD!

I'm looking forward to using SP to lose that weight again, and make some friends in the process.

Hey everyone. I'm 27 and I'm just finishing up my first year of my MS in Statistics, at California State East Bay. I've never really been a thin girl, but during my undergrad I did a lot of weight training cardio, and got down to about 150lbs for a long time. Then I inexplicably lost 20 pounds about 3 years ago and was super thin for a while. Sadly, I gained it all back (and then some). I've been on Spark for a little while now, but am just now deciding to stop lurking around here. ;)

Hi! I just finished my first year of my PhD program in Microbiology at the University of Virginia. I put on weight during undergrad, lost it, then gained some back at the end of my senior year of undergrad when I was writing my senior thesis. Trying to get rid of it before my wedding....

Hey there!

I'm a 1st year neuro PhD student who just signed up for Spark. I was good at working out through part of undergrad and managed to drop quite a bit of weight, but then also managed to put it back on. I stumbled upon this site on accident and thought it sounded like a great way to reset myself on a healthy trajectory. Finding a group of science grad students in the same boat as I am is even better!! Plus, now I have the ultimate procrastination tool when I reeeeeeally don't want to read those papers.
Looking forward to seeing just what this site can do!

Hello, all! Technically, I'm not a scientist.... But I am writing my dissertation in Victorian literature and the relationship between shifting philosophies of science and the early development of science fiction. Surely that counts! Plus, I'm married to a grad student in geoscience.

I'm not in the big online posting habit, but I'll give it a shot to keep motivated and get fit.

Hi there!

I'm currently post-bac at my alma mater. I'm always doing research, and my research is engrossing. But when you are churning out conferences papers and IRB protocols or doing yet another lit review, it is just way to easy to munch...and munch...and oops! so much for that bag! I absolutely love what I do. But I don't eat well when I work, especially before deadlines. I'm here to change that.

When I have free time (ha!), I love to read history, cook, and watch movies. Popcorn, anyone?

Happy new year!

Hi, I am a 6th year PhD student in Molecular Microbiology. I am finishing this May (finally) and will be working on my dissertation, wrapping up a project and my first manuscript all this next semester. I am hoping that sparkpeople will help me avoid my constant snacking (or at least improve the quality of the snack) while I type so that I don't pack on more pounds during the stress. Glad to find like-minders here to support the torture that is grad school.

Hi,
I'm a 5th year (aHhh!) Ph.D. student in Microbiology. The stress of grad school has inspired a lot of emotional eating and my weight has increased about 40 pounds in the last 2-2.5 years. I'm tired of being overweight and unhealthy. I think that a healthy me will also be a better scientist!

Welcome to the team, Nightsun!

And feel free to start a thread about True Tales of Forensic Science - I'm afraid people might overlook it if it's in the introductions.

Hi all,

I'm a second-year Ph.D. student in chemistry, working on detection of non-nitrogen-based explosives. I have been a chemist at one of the largest municipal crime labs in the U.S. and after five years of charging into meth labs and marijuana growhouses, forensic science is getting boring and I'd like to move into applied research. Between the crime lab and the university, my weight is creeping up there and I want to nip it before I get hopeless.

I'm not much of a "joiner" by nature--I think a lot of scientists are perfectly happy with their own company--but I heard good things about SparkPeople so I guess I'll give it a try. I see there are some people in this group who are interested in or are studying forensic science...I can give info about what the crime lab's really like, if anyone's curious. :-)

In this house of pain resides a goddess. Her name is Victory.

Hi guys!

I'm a first year MS/PhD student in Animal Science. I study sheep behavior (as it reflects reproductive fitness, essentially) and my background is in molecular biology and comparative psychology. Lately, I've been into behavioral endocrinology.

I'm glad to see this group here, nice to know there are plenty of other science nerd grad students just as busy and stressed as I am trying to lose weight just like I am. I swear, all the grad students in my department are trim and HOT! This lends itself to being an awkward combination of depressing and motivating.

Hey everyone! In the fall I will begin a part-time Master's in Biotechnology (bioengineering/biopharma)...part time because I will also be working my normal 40hr week in the lab where I'm currently do pretty much everything and am the lab manager. I'm hoping to reach my goal at least by the time classes start so I will hopefully just have to maintain. I've been looking for a science team to get support from people who know what it's like to need about 5+ extra hours a day emoticon

Just joined... Just finished my second year of a Psychological Sciences PhD program and am currently writing my master's thesis. Great time to be incorporating a lifestyle change! My area of focus is social psychology, and my thesis is examining motivational differences between liberals and conservatives. Not what some people would consider "science," but believe me, it is! It's social science! ;)

Hi!

I'm Bronte (after the dinosaur, not the writing sisters, see sciency already!)
I'm doing a MPhil/PhD in Animal Science. My BSX (Hons) (in NZ Hons is extra to a BSC) is in Genetics. I can't watch CSI, but I did yell out at the start of Spiderman.

I'm a Kiwi living in the UK. My family are in NZ (except for my brother, who is in London), and I live in a tiny flat with my SweetiePie

Hey everyone,
My name is Andrée. I'm currently an international student working on my MSc in Human Osteology and Funerary Archaeology.
My BSc was a double major in Forensic Science and Anthropology, so I also yell and complain while watching CSI...yet I still watch every episode.
I'm very happy to have found this group!

Hiya, I'm Cindy and I'm a third year biochemistry and molecular biology Ph.D. student. It has been too easy to develop unhealthy habits from the stress of grad school, but I've decided that my health has to be a bigger priority in my life.

Mel, I totally understand yelling at the screen when watching CSI. I do mass spectrometry and I swear that they use the same spectrum for every single compound they analyze!

Hey everyone, My name is Nicole and I am in my first year of pharmacy school or the third depending on which way you count it. Either way, I have 3 more years left. Finals week is next week (ugh). This program requires so much more effort then undergrad. I only studied a couple hours before test and got straight A's, now I bust my butt for days and who knows how its going to turn out (not A's for the most part). Its been such a big adjustment that I have lost sight of all health goals...I'm sleeping less, working out way less, and after a 4 day stretch of 2 tests, 2 presentations, 3 quizzes, and 20 hours of lecture I really want to just dive right into a half gallon of B&J ice cream! How weird is it that the more I learn about health, the less healthy I become? I got to get back on track!

Hey everyone. My name's Mel. I'm in the 3rd year of my PhD in Immunology at Monash in Australia. It's such a great place to work, but of course the hours are crazy to say the least. I have had 24+ hour experiments in the past - how do you find time to go to the gym then?

Since starting on sparkpeople, I've forced myself to manage my time a lot better. So, I'll spend from 7am to 5pm in the lab, then race to my local Curves before it shuts. Get home, make dinner for my partner and I, feed the cats and crash on the couch and watch some CSI (although i spend most of the time yelling at the screen cos they never do anything right) ;)

Anyway, I was happy to find a group of fellow geeks on here. I think atm, I'm just trying to find the motivation both to get fit and get some work done. Start of the year blues.

What would life be without a little fun?

Hi, I am finishing my M.Sc. in Geology. I graduate this June 2008! I usually tell people I am working on my Masters of the Universe... It sort of feels that way. I lost 20 lbs last summer while away on an internship. Then, I came back to school and put on the 20 plus 10! It happens. Just when you align one area of your life another area will go neglected.

Hi all
I am finishing the first year of my M.Sc.in polymer chemistry and am considering a Ph.D. I have gone from a size 10 pants to 14 in the last year and half. OMG I think that is officially in the plus sizes and the 14 is feeling a little tight too. Needless to say I am not happy about it.
I especially find it hard to balance. I am unsure of how to fit in research, teaching labs, marking, taking classes, exercise and cooking/eating healthy. Also as a grad student the money to eat really healthy just doesn't seem to be there. How did all of you get through your masters?
I do try to exercise 3 times a week at home. I bring a lunch (and often dinner) to school in an attempt to decrease my caloric intake. So hopefully I will soon see some results!
D

Hi everyone! Fellow science geek here. I'm in my 3rd year as a PhD in biological and biomedical sciences, specializing in cancer research and tumor microenvironment. I think the hardest thing about being a grad student in research and losing weight is finding the time to go to the gym inbetween all my experiments! But thank goodness for PCRs and long incubation times emoticon

Hi-

Finally, a team who will understand the issues associated with trying to finish a graduate degree or even going to college while trying to become healthy! OH, I am getting my MS in chemistry.
It is very easy to let yourself go while trying to study, TA'ing, grading, performing research, thesis work, etc...
My nutrition consist of what I can grab and eat while on the run or studying. SO, pretty much crap!
And exercise is the time it takes to walk to and from the parking lot or associated classes and of course the library.
So, if anyone wants an encouragement, shoulder to cry on, or just to vent. Let me know!
Best wishes and Happy 2008!

Be realistic.

Seriously, did that happen overnight!!

Btw - Im Anghared, not Angharrad. But I like typos and wanted to get this right from the start. See how motivated I am?

I am not a native english speaker, as probably is pretty obvious, but I am trying hard. Correct me if you feel like it!

Hi! I'm working on a PhD in civil engineering with an emphasis in transportation and pavement materials at Brigham Young University.

I'm less concerned about my weight (though I would like to lose ten pounds) then about how my body feels. As I have been cramming to get fellowship applications in I have stopped exercising and have been eating absolute junk. Now I am starting to pay for it.

I'm also having trouble with daylight savings time because now it is dark even when I make it out of my lab by six pm. The dark and the cold make it really hard to be active.

Hi everyone!

My name is Brianna, and I'm a first year student for a doctorate of audiology degree. I'm just finishing my first quarter, and I have a long way to go...the program is 4 years total, then one year of supervised practice by a licensed audiologist.

Since I graduated with my undergrad in May, I've put on a few pounds, and since grad school has started I feel like I'm not making any progress towards losing this extra poundage/getting in overall better shape. I run 2-3 times a week and eat healthy (mostly!) but with my crazy schedule and increased workload I'm finding it really difficult to get this weight off. Because I have to get good grades to be funded next year, the pressure is really on (not to mention I have to pass this huge first year exam at the end of the spring quarter) and I tend to eat more when I'm stressed. If anyone has any suggestions I would be THRILLED!

Anyways, it's nice to meet all of you!

Hey! I'm a first year biomedical engineering PhD student. I will probably be in grad school for a long time. Or at least longer than I really want to be.

I think the hardest thing is that I'm on campus for 10 or 11 hours between classes and teaching. It's such a pain to carry both lunch and dinner with me all day (I don't have an office) and putting the energy into making everything at once is hard.

Hi all,

I just joined spark so I could track what goes on with my nutrition and stuff, I sure did get fat getting my MS and now that I have transitioned into PhD land I am working on being healthier. I am already most of the way to my goal, but I realized that I would need some help nutrition wise for the last mile.

Great to see there is a group for other nerds!

Holy crap, yes! I learned a bunch of things in biochemistry (what happens when we eat what, etc) and what sucks even MORE is that the vending machine (and our discount snacks) are so close to the rooms (or even IN the rooms) and it's hard to resist. Today my bloodsugar got low and instead of getting something healthy, I had a candybar... it's so hard when you have the mindset of OMG I'M GONNA DIE in your head.... you know?
Ah, well.. I should really keep something on me, like some juice

Hi, Emi!

Welcome!
Of course it's ok to post here. :)
We are all nerds trying to be healthier...and the worst part is since we know something about biology...we know we SHOULD be healthier!!

Feel free to post and join in.
Looks like I'm the one who likes to post the most and I'd love some company. hehe

Hello, there!

How nice it was to see a Sparkteam for science grad students!

My name is Kate, and I am a 4th year biochemistry grad student at the University of Arizona. I'm passionate about disease research, and get to work hands-on each day in the lab. As I'm sure you each know, there are many stresses, deadlines, talks, and events to attend. I'm really looking for ways to have more energy and be more fit in hopes it will help with work and my life outside of work (you are probably asking, what life outside of work?? haha).

I'm hoping to get a little more trim so I can enjoy the holidays this year more, too, and perhaps that time off can be spent working on ME! instead of lab things! emoticon

Thanks for making this team, and I hope to be a part of some encouragement.

Good luck!!
Kate

I am a second year PhD student in Biomedical Sciences. I am busy (who isn't?) and have never really taken the time to focus on my lifestyle choices in the diet/exercise arena.

This website seems so upbeat! emoticon I am really hoping it'll keep me motivated for the long haul!

Hey everyone! I am a chemistry masters student in Connecticut and along with that I work full time as a biochemist. Needless to say, I have a lot of really long days consisting of eating mostly what ever I have time to consume. Right now i'm working on finding more healthy treats before classes start again. I'm hoping by the time I graduate in May I'll be exactly where I want to be!

Hello all! I'm about to be a second-year MS computer science student at UNC. Not sure research is my thing, so I've opted to not continue on for a PhD, but I met the love of my life here, so I can't complain. ;)

i start grad school in august (phd in biomed science). im in this for the long haul- i want to pick up some good eatting habits (ie. actually LEARN how to cook healthy meals on a budget and time crunch) before hitting the books and lab. if not, theres no telling how ill end up after my first year!

Hello! I'm at Virginia Tech working on a PhD in Computer Engineering, but I'm an amateur science nerd in my spare time. I'm working and getting my degree at the same time. I joined industry after my MS three years ago, and I've been trying to work off my BS/MS weight gain since then.

Hey all,

I'm just wrapping up my PhD in Space Physics. All those years sitting in front of a computer looking at data has done me in! I found that by being truthful to the nutrition tracker I've lost more than I ever thought I could. Now I'm trying to make time to start doing some basic exercise other than walk my two dogs or rather having them walk me :)

Good luck to those of you getting ready for grad school! I know how it feels going in. I will certainly be glad when I'm done.

Anyone have advice for how to look for a post-doc? I've have two "sort of" offers but nothing solid. I'm looking for a bit of advice to maybe push those two into really offers...

Hi Tessa,
I started this group, and I'm not yet in grad school either - the same boat actually, starting in august, just graduated in may. Thanks for joining! Do you have any pointers for how to lose the pre-grad school weight, because so far I haven't made it very far, and the days are dwindling away! AHHH

Hi my name is Tessa! Ok so I kinda cheated... I'm still a Senior undergrad, but I will be in Grad School oh so soon. I'm a physics major. I'm trying to get to healthier weight before school starts again b/c there won't be a lot of time then.
