Hey Azriel -

I would love to walk super early, like 5 am, but I am up for anything. I am taking some time off work, so I have an open schedule.

Thanks for responding

Hi. I live in north scottsdale near shea and 90th street. I am looking for walking buddies for the trail that runs through mccormick ranch, starting at the hospital/library. I really prefer walking in the early mornings. please post if you are interested in starting a walking group.

Hi all...I am also new to Sparkpeople. I would like to lose 40 pounds and become more active. I live in the central Scottsdale area and would be interested meeting people who would like to hike/bike/walk together. I am hoping this is the kick in the pants I need to stick with a healthier lifestyle!

Hey Scottsdale Sparkers,

I'm new to SparkPeople -- just happened upon it as I was surfing the net,
I have lived in Scottsdale/NE Phoenix for over 20 years. I found a great little gym that came to Scottsdale about 1-1/2 years ago -- Koko FitClub and I'm addicted!! You need to check it out and test drive the "Smart Trainer", which walks you through your weight training workout -- all customized to YOU and YOUR needs!! It's like having a personal trainer without them looking over your shoulder! Koko keeps you on track and lets you look back at your progress.
I also enjoy hiking the mountains and kayaking the lakes with my husband and puppy in tow.
I look forward to sharing tips and ideas for enjoying life in sunny Scottsdale!

Hi Scottsdale Sparkers!
Becky here! I live in North Central Phoenix but spend most of my time in North Scottsdale and you guys are WAY more active than the Phoenix team so here I am! Hope it's okay with all of you!

I am a hiker and a kayaker but unable to hike until December because last December I broke my ankle and Doc says no hiking for a year!!! Just getting back into sparking and I am not sure why I ever left!

Anyway hope to get to know some of you!

Hello Scottsdale Sparkers,

I am new to SparkPeople and actually ran into it on accident but I'm glad I did. My goal is to be healthy. I have a weight loss goal but it's more about creating healthy habits for myself that I can practice for a lifetime. I look forward that challenge!

Thanks,

Hey everyone.

I'm a previous SP member. I came back after using the Bodybugg program for a time - it helped me better understand how my body burns calories and I'm happy to be back to SP. Some of you may have known me as Zeki. I'm glad to be back! Nutrition is my biggest problem.

PS: Hey LKEITHO - how's it going? still going strong I see! =)

Hi I am super new to this. I am wondering if the cardio tracker can create workouts instead of me just typing the workouts I do myself? I notice how it creates a meal plan and a strength training routine but what if I don't like the workout they have chosen for me at the gym? Will it automatically select a ab workout if I don't like the ab workout it provided? It says I need to burn 156 calories a day three times a week for my cardio but how do I know if im running enough?

Hi, everyone! My name is Keith, and I have been asked to take over as team leader. I have lived in Scottsdale, just north of the Mayo Clinic, for over 10 years. I run or walk every morning, and work out at the Scottsdale/Paradise Valley YMCA once or twice a week. I look forward to hearing ideas from all of you for team challenges, activities, or any other way you think we can make this a great team. Talk to you soon!

Hi, I moved to Scottsdale over Christmas from California. It's been hectic settling in but now I am mostly grounded and realizing I need to make some new friends and connections here in my new home! I am married with two small boys (twins) and would love to meet some fun loving girls to connect with. I live in NE Scottsdale in Greyhawk. I joined Lifetime fitness on N Scottsdale Road and love it, I go every weekday around lunch since my job is very close by. I enjoy all different kinds of activities but miss a work out buddy. Anyone need a work out buddy or regularly get together in this area?

Thanks!

Hi, Scottsdale!

I'm not living in Scottsdale yet, but I will be by NEXT summer (I HOPE!). I lived in Arizona from 1998-2008 in Mesa and Chandler. My boyfriend lives in Scottsdale so I'll be moving back there from the bay area (California) when I'm done with my masters program. I visit every other month so hopefully sometime while I'm there I'll get a chance to meet up with some of you! :D

As a long-time (30 year) Scottsdale resident, I've turned into a real desert rat - anything under 70 degrees is practically sub-arctic - and I grew up in Checago so should know better! Am anxiously awaiting the onset of bright sunshiny days and HEAT. Where in Scottsdale do you live and do you like to walk/hike?

emoticon Glad you fond SparkPeople - sounds like you already have an exercise program going! I live in downtown Scottsdale, work in the airpark and walk just about every Sunday with a group of other sparkers at Chaparral Park - we usually do the 2 mile loop starting around 8 a.m. Two of the women who walk are also early exercisers during the week - they're usually at the gym by 5 or 5:30 most mornings. Hope we can coordinate schedules and do some things together.

Hi! I'm new to the team. I've been on SP for 4 months. I live in Scottsdale Mountain, and I usually walk/jog every morning very early (about 4:30 AM) on the weekdays, and a little later (7 or so) on the weekends.

Whoa - with that weight loss, you already rock! None of our walking/hiking crew is up to marathon training (or even much running), but the greenbelt in Scottsdale has over 30 miles of off-road paths used by runners, walkers, bikers, and skaters. You can access it from McKellips between Hayden and Miller and follow several paths north to Indian Bend Road (then with a short break, it extends even further). Paved sidewalks are pretty much along Hayden and are on both the east and west sides of the street making it convenient for running/walking a loop. At many east/west streets, the paths go underground as a bypass so you don't even have to slow down to cross the road. I've put my walking routes on the SP walking tracker, and once you've gone over the area (either on foot or even driving along it) you should be able to map out a few training routes and they'll give you the mileage.
Good luck on the marathon - with your dedication I'm confident you'll make it!

Hi Everyone! I'm a Mesa Sparker, here for over a year. I started at 212 pounds. I reached my first goal of 160 and heading for my second goal of 149. I'm training for my first marathon... the Lost Dutchman in 2/2010. I'm nine weeks into training, up to 8 miles. A friend mentioned the Greenbelt to me and I'm seriously interested in running long distances out there. I see you have a group that walks out there. is there a mileage map around? A running buddy would be awesome, but my schedule is pretty tight. :)

Hi Jon! You're right, this is an amazing site with incredible resources to help with nutrition, exercise, motivation, and education - everything necessary to start (and keep on) living a much healthier life. We're also lucky to live in a community with great recreational resources - the greenbelt park system with walking/jogging/biking/skating paths, baseball and soccer fields, tennis and volleyball courts, and hiking trails ranging from easy to difficult. If you need/want any info on resources here, just post your question and I'm sure one (or more) of us will get back to you.
Great you took this first step!

I'm jealous - haven't been back to the Northeast in about 3 years, but glad that you had a good week off. Next Saturday I'm doing a mini indoor triathlon at the gym - 2,000 meters rowing, then 5 miles on the spinning bike, then run/walk 2 miles on the track - am going to see how close to an hour I can come for the whole thing. If the weather cooperates, would like to get out for a hike Sunday - have to see how the week shapes up. Glad you're back!

I also used to belong to a gym that was several miles away, and found that since changing to one so much closer to home I actually go more often. I have a free membership to the Fitness Center through my HMO (they finally came to the realization that it's cheaper for them in the long run to pay for a gym membership rather than treatment for all the ailments that arise from lack of fitness), but I found out that membership runs $20/month - about what you're paying now. I just signed up to participate in their annual indoor triathlon next month - three levels of rowing, biking, running/walking from olympic level to half-olympic to mini (I'm entering the mini, will think about upping it next year). I've stated training and it's definitely helping me keep those cardio minutes up there.

Hi Carol! The weather is definitely a challenge for me as well. I belong to Pure Fitness and typically go to Shea. My house is so darn close to SCC that I really should look at becoming a member. I'm currently paying $22/mo. Thanks for the motivation Carol!

Hi Lynn! Would love the added motivation! The weather right now is my major challenge - not sure I'm up for hiking this time of year, esp since I'm not exactly a morning person :) I would definitely be up for some evening walks along the greenbelt though if you're interested.

Hi Jenmoser, and emoticon . You sound determined to succeed and are doing all the right things to see that it happens. I'm trying to get in more exercise as well, but in this heat am doing almost everything indoors. What gym do you use? There's a couple of us who go to the SCC Fitness Center for classes, an indoor track, and strength training. The downside for me of spending so much time at home is the constant availability of food - when I'm busy I don't even think of it but when there's a lull it seems that's all I think of. You're more than halfway to your goal - keep it up!

Hello! I'm starting (again!) to get back on the right track. I know that in the past logging food and exercise as well as making myself accountable to a group of folks as well as myself definitely helps keep me on track. Goal = from 168 to 130 by January.

Great decision Ashley, and you've chosen a site just loaded with resources and people to help you reach that goal. What kind of puppy are you getting? With a dog (and active 3-year old) at least you're guaranteed to get out and walk several times a day - that's what got my DH started and now he walks 2-3 miles every day and has cut his cholesterol reading in half. Here's to Success!

Ethiopioan food has a lot of veggie dishes (lentils, beans, etc.) and also features chicken, beef, fish, and lamb as well. A variety of spices are used, from mild to fairly hot - menu items are pretty well marked and the servers are very helpful as well. Most meals consist of at least 2 - 3 dishes which come to the table served on a large round of injera (a sourdough-like flatbread, kind of spongy in texture) which is used as plate and eating utensil as well - kind of like the bread bowls or trenchers for soups/stews where you eat the bowl along with the container. You tear off pieces of the injera and use them to scoop up bite-sized helpings of the various dishes. There are a variety of cold and hot drinks (both alcoholic and non). It's in a little shopping center on the S/E corner of Priest/University - very casual. If you're at all adventuresome in your culinary tastes, I think you'd enjoy a trip there. Let me know what you think if you go!

Thanks for the welcome and the suggestion! I've never had Ethiopian food, but I'm definitely open to it! I'll have to look it up. Is there anything in particular you suggest? Thank you!

Welcome Dearpie - glad to have you with us! I love good food and it's a constant search to find restaurants serving tasty fare that won't break my calorie bank. One of my faves is Lalibela's Ethiopian Restaurant on Priest in Tempe - if you haven't tried it yet, it's a must.

Hi y'all! I joined the group after seeing the Best Restaurant thread and wanted to keep track of it! I'll have to try some of them. While I'm not in Scottsdale, I'm close enough, in Tempe. emoticon

Wrist guards - I put on so much padding I look like the Michelin Tire guy's grandmother!! I'm still in the tentative stage, but once you get going, you burn 650+ calories/hr and we definitely have plenty of scenic pathways along the greenbelt to use. Am looking forward to getting at least "adequate" - so far it's a lot of fun.

Ouch - never had heel spurs, but have been told they make you move VERY carefully. I'm working both days this weekend - making up for the holidays when everyone put off going to class and now they're panicking to get it in before scheduled court date. Finally got in a couple of days roller blading - technique leaves a lot to be desired, but I'm still upright.

Hope the PT helps - from past experience am convinced that anyone in that field has more than a touch of sadism!

Carol, Hi I saw Joan on Sunday, It rained all day, so we went to Mesa Market place and the mall to walk. I have a heel spur on my left heel that is really causing a lot of pain. Going to PT for my knee and heel, so I can only walk on flat surfaces nothing up or down Till future notice. Bummer. But it is Ok and they want me to walk. I think Joan is coming our way this weekend are you free?? Let me know Lynn

Definitely - I get one of these every year, usually around the end of October. This year it just came 6 weeks late because the weather stayed warm so much longer. I did get my flu shot - you're right, didn't help with this at all.

Talking to my family (Illinois and upstate New York) and hearing about their sub-zeros, I feel like such a wimp - anything below 65 and I'm freezing (but then again, after 29 years here 100 doesn't even faze me). Do you ever go out walking? Lynny and I make it out to the mountain preserve for a hike whenever we can and I do some walking along the greenbelt in central Scottsdale - I also work out at the SCC Fitness Center several times a week. If you ever feel like getting out with someone else, post a note and we could probably work out getting us all together.

My husband and I have had the coughing, runny nose thing for a week. Finally over it, but still get the tickle a couple of times a day, especially at night. Did not get the flu shot, but it sure wouldn't have helped with this. I guess it just the changing weather that brings it on?
