Hi all. I'm new to the group and just getting back on this weight loss rollercoaster. I'm hoping this is the last time. I'm trying a new approach of trying to eat healthy and not think of it as a DIET. Every diet I've tried, I've failed. Of course they all work great to start...then I give in to one "deadly temptation" then another. I figure if I look at it as making healthier choices I will be more likely to succeed. Here's to hoping anyway.

ChristyDK, Being open here helps since it makes us admit our failings. If you want to make goal to start Sunday, tomorrow, and use us for accountability that would be great. My plan is to check-in every morning and evening to help with this. My other goals are already listed.

Thomas, It is wonderful to have other goals than weight related. My goal for that is to do a project in my home weekly. This next week to organize the storage room. We moved a year ago and I have not been able to do much. I get overwhelmed and hide into a book. This is my depression and something I need to overcome. I am a big believer in Christ, a born-again Christian, and I will make other goals to deal with my beliefs too.

Christydks40 - Heya!

I was reading something yesterday and I realised that wehn i make goals of a physical nature that I also needed to make goals of a social nature.

I have social phobias i think, man I can break out in a sweat at times talking, not, "oh i am moist pfff..." more like "DANG GET THAT BOY A SHAMMY!!!!" kind of sweat!

So I decided to make me some social goals to go along with my physical goals.

I would skip church luncheons after services that we usually have once a month. I decided from now on, no matter how I feel, I will attend these functions and even attempt to sit with different people each time.

We also have, at times, a moment when the choir makes their way to the front that people go around and greet others with a handshake or hug, I used to stay in front with my video camera, because i fill the service, I decided though from now on that any time this happens I will make it a point to go and say hello to others in the church.

I know it does not sound like a lot but being as self-conscious as I am, it is a big deal to me.

With my Physical and social goals I also set spiritual goals. For example, read a certain number of chapters a day or memorize a scripture every week. I am sure you get the idea.

I find it so hard to just to start. For instance this whole last week I wanted to start walking if nothing more, Just start by walking 5 min in morning and 5 min in evening. I could not just do it. I was frustrated with myself.

However today I wwent to talmart to get some ink for printer and a couple items, I left with nothing, the last box of ink I needed I guess someone did not wanted to pay for and open the box and ink cartridge, so off to another walmart.

My point of this weird lead in?

I must have walked 10 min...

WHAT???
It didn't kill me!!!
I am able to make a check on my spark page for that exercise... [x] Walk In Morning.

I guess it is just the thought of walking alone outside thinking it will be boring. But, I have to do something, I have a short term goal of loosing 50 pounds and buying a bike so I can start riding again, have not rode a bike seriously since i was like 11. It is time to start. I cringe knowing that discouragement and fear are waiting to pounce and disrupt or destroy my plans.

I am going to work on...

1) Start walking once in morning and once toward evening... start small and work up each week.
2) Keep on my 10 cups water
3) Drop regular soda and stay away from it.

Yea! I was hoping to all out start Sunday with the weigh in on Sunday morning. I did this before and found I was more mindful of what I ate during the weekend because I had the weigh-in at the end. My goals this next week: 1) Stay within my calorie range, 2) Do a minimum of 30 mins workout (including warm up and cool down)-- I will walk until I sweat, 3) drink 8 cups water daily. What 3 goals are you going to work on?

Chaplain Wagner, you are definitely not the only one who feels this way. I weigh 303, which is down from a few weeks ago. On my birthday in August I was 315 and I was able to lose 5 lbs by not eating, not healthy, so I came back to SP. My BMI is 43 so I have 130 lbs to lose to be overweight and not obese. I really don't have health problems from my obesity but I do have depression and asthma, which I have had since I was 150 lbs at 16. I am very tall for a woman at 5'11." I do wonder if all this is worth the stress of counting and obsessing over my numbers of calories, fat, carb, protein, exercise mins etc. I am a nurse and know what all this can do to me. I am back here because I have found I do need the accountability. I recently found my job was a huge negative stress on my life and was hurting me too. I did quit my job (I had that option) and am trying to get another way to bring in an income. I may take classes so I can do computer work at home. I also am going to start walking next week, even if it's half mile, it's a start. I need to get into this mind frame and not talk myself out of it daily. I am trying to stay within my calories, but my family doesn't help much, everyone is close to normal weight and don't need to think about health at this time. If you need to be kept accountable to keep on this through the struggles post here and I can try to help if you want to keep me accountable too. I know groups is the best way to do this to be successful. Let me know if you want to do this or if anyone else wants to join. If anyone has health/medical concerns I can answer what I do know. I know all this and am still here. Let me know.

Greetings, My name is Thomas. I cam back to sparks after being away for far too long. I live in Katy Texas and very discouraged with health lately.

Currently I fight the thought, "Is it worth it?"
Yes, I know it is, in the long run. However, I am 45 and weigh 391 pounds, My BMI is 54.5 and I should be 177# lighter to be at an acceptable weight, thus my catastrophic mindset is, "do i have the time to lose weight slowly? Have I pretty much sealed my fate... Do I have a year to lose 100 pounds in? Can I loose enough to make a difference in a short time... what happens if I fail?"

I post because I am curious, am I the only one who feels this way?

I have been using the trackers on and off (much more off than on) for a while, but the past 3 weeks I have been really getting into the help and motivation of this site and for the first time and reaching out to the community as well. I started the free trial of sparkcoach on Monday and have found it very helpful. I really need to form healthy habits and am taking babysteps to do so. I have a huge amount of weight to lose so I am focusing on getting healthy and what's doable in small increments rather than the big picture. This board looks like the right one for me for a bit anyway, dang near 50. Hello to all, if you need some support add me as a friend and I will do my best. Hello! I joined SP before, but I wasn't ready like I am now...I have solid goals, been eating better, moving, added a part time job to my full time job...hard to eat when you're too busy :) I am not sure what I weigh, but I want to lose 100 pounds by this time next year. Hi. I'm Christa. I'm 45 and wife and a mother. We recently moved to England from the USA for my hubby's work. I have three teenagers. Although I was overweight before I ever had my kids, I continued to put on weight. I tend to eat a lot due to stress. I crave both sweets and salt.

if you are on biggest loser - 5-20lbs. It depends how much you weigh, your activity level etc. For normal people "in the zone", exercising daily, eating at low end of calorie scale, really no more than 3lbs a week is going to come off. I won a local ymca "biggest loser" class. I lost 18lbs in 6 weeks. I pushed exercise and eating to the limits and was totally in the zone. Now that we are older there is no way to lose the weight like we used to. Our bodies are totally different. It stinks! I know exactly what you mean about losing weight with no problem at all. But now - we are in it for the LONG HAUL. Just like we put it on over a long period of time it will come off that way :( Not the news we'd like but it is possible as long as we keep pushing. emoticon

Ninergal - Have you done the calculator that gives you a calorie range to eat within? Have you been tracking everything you eat? If you are staying within the calorie range it is probably your body adapting to what is going on. I'm now on my 2nd "stall". I haven't budged weight for 2 weeks or so. This is my 2nd time. During my first stall, by the 3rd week the scale finally budged. I'm in the middle of my second "stall" and nothings moved in a couple weeks again. I think it is normal. I have such a hard time imagining how I can eat 1000 less everyday and not automatically lose weight. I guess it just doesn't work that way :(
I'm so sorry you are frustrated - totally understandable. Anyone would be - you are not alone.

so if you guys really put yourself in a zone and working out how much weight do you think we should honestly be able to lose in a week. The hard part is the age. I just cannot stand that i used to be able to do a liquid diet for 2 days and lose 5 lbs and now i cant :(

That is awesome! Im just having the hardest time because I just cannot seem to lose the weight. I cut down and have not had time to exercise and no weight loss. really frustrated :(

Hey NinerGirl! sorry it took me a while to get back to you. yes, everything is going slow and steady with the weightloss. The key for me is tracking the food I'm eating here on sparkpeople. I am not working out right now, not normally anyways,, I am doing all of my exercise in a warm pool because of injuries due to a car accident. I do approx 2 hours per week right now. Since I've gotten the food component pretty under control I know fat will start disappearing so much faster once am able to get more exercise in.
Since it's been a couple weeks - how are you doing with everything? I hope the last 2 weeks have gone well for you. I'd love to hear back from you. (sorry if it take a little bit to reply - i have a toddler LOL). Jen emoticon

Welcome ninergal. I'm just watching a show on the black wolf. Amazing. I am thankful for the work you do. Yes please do get to the place where you can take care of those special animals :) I'm pretty new to spark - its been 3-4 weeks. Love that everyone is so friendly and supportive. Yes, definitely don't cut too much food-wise. Even on The Biggest Loser, they comment that if the competitors try to cut corners but cutting out food or fasting, it backfires because their bodies compensate by going into starvation mode. I've also found (and have read) that if I choose one day where I "splurge" a bit (nothing too drastic, I'm not talking about bingeing out or anything) - it can fool your metabolism in a good way. I choose Sundays because that's the day my family goes out to lunch after church.

so definately exercise then. i read somewhere that if you cut so drastically your calories your body will starve itself and you wont lose weight. Before my 40's that was the easiest way for me to lose. Now it doesnt work :(

Hi Debbie and welcome to SparkPeople! This is my second time using it but my first time REEEALLY using it. So glad you got through the leg infection last year. How scary! I'm going to post my introduction to this group separately but I'll just say here that I'm 49 and my starting weight was 300 on February 8th. I'm now at 265 and doing pretty well. I completely understand what you're talking about - not being able to get your mind off food. It's really hard but I have found that I just try to use the obsession for good. What I mean is, I am on this website a LOT - I track EVERYTHING I eat - even if I totally blow it, which I definitely do. It is pretty sobering to have to honestly enter that I ate four Hershey bars in one day. Ugh! But just know that every day is a new day and we can start over with a clean slate. Having a good week with a nice loss is very motivating. I, myself, have SO MANY reasons to get this weight off and to get healthy. I'm sure you do as well! I am also type 2 and was starting to have so much pain from carrying t his extra weight around. I already feel better with the 35 pounds off. I had gastric bypass surgery 12 years ago -- obviously failed. I just want to do it right this time. I want to be here to watch my children get married and run around with my grandkids. I am very motivated to ride a horse again and ski again - both things that I really enjoyed when I was young. Well, I'm babbling a bit so I guess I'll mosey along. It's finally warming back up here in Illinois where I live and I'm hoping to get out on my bicycle again today! Just try to move some every day and don't worry about fixating on food - just try to make better choices, a little more/better every day and hopefully the success you have from doing so will keep you motivated. Read my blog to see how I'm doing - I definitely have hard times! We can do this! emoticon

hey there I am new too and sounds like I am in the right place!!! I have a lot to lose and for 4 weeks now I just cut my calories down to about 1200 a day without working and I did not lose a pound!! Is exercise a must after 40 to see results???

Hi everyone. I am a newbie spark people. I am 47 years old and weigh 327 pounds. I have had type 2 for the last 13 years. Last year I got a really bad infection in my leg. I had ruptured my achilles tendon and the infection started internally. There were no outward signs of the infection as I had no open sores. I began running really high fevers for about a week, ranging from 102-104 degrees. When I had a fever I took something and my temperature went down. After doing this for a week my fever was not able to be broken with medication. I started having urinary tract infection symptoms and finally went to the doctor. This was on a Thursday. By Sunday the back of my leg was swollen and really warm to the touch. I went to the ER and ended up being admitted. My lab work was really bad. A surgeon came in that evening and it was decided that I was going to have surgery on my leg the next day. I went to surgery Monday morning and that was the last thing I remembered....except for one thing...for the next 17 days. Apparently I was so sick that after surgery I was not able to breathe on my own and ended up on a ventilator....for 17 days. This already a long story but I was in septic shock. My family was told that I probably was not going to live. Along with not being able to breathe, my kidneys were not working right and I ended up on dialysis. That was a year ago. I survived, not being able to work for two months. I did return to work after 2 months. By the grace of God I survived. Dialysis was only temporary and although I had to continue with a wound vac, eventually after a subsequent surgery for a skin graft things are back to normal.

The only bad thing about this is that I have been doing very poorly with my diabetes, Eating right and not overeating are big issues for me. Food is like crack to me...I just have to have it. I don't know what I can do to get my mind off of food. I was able to quit smoking cigarettes and stop using methamphetamines. All without treatment. Do you want to know the ironic part? Most people that smoke meth end up being really skinny, because it's like doing speed, I quit four years ago after smoking it for five years. The ironic part is that I never lost weight while doing it. None at all.

Anyway if anyone has some ideas that can help me take my mind off of wanting to eat all the time I would really appreciate it. I look forward to being in this group and hopefully this will be successful. I had contemplated gastric bypass surgery but my insurance won't cover it and I don't have the 25,000 to pay for it myself.

Hi !!! 358.5lbs is what I weighed in Tuesday at Doctors office. This is one day at a time for me. I tend to overdo things then I give up cause I feel like it is taking over my life then I give up. I can't do that this time. My life depends on it so I have two hours each morning set aside to blog exercise and to meet my goals then rest of day only have to blog food n exercise for the evening. Please keep me in your thoughts as I will have you in mine


Ps my goal is to lose at least 6 lbs a month

Hey everyone! I am a stay at home housewife right now and need to lose approx. about 155 pds. I was a WW member but due to a financial change I had to let that go for now and come back to SparkPeople cuz it's free! But the real reason is since I was let go of my job of 12 yrs and eating my stress away due to my brother being very ill, I gained a ton of weight. On top of what I was dealing with. So now I need to really get it off. I have two family members that are Type II diabetic and my dad had a major heart attack again this last November and now has congestive heart failure. So I have several strikes against me. So I am hoping that the support I get here is gonna help!! Thanks!

Hello. My name is Briana. I am new here. Like alot of people I have tried sparkpeople before, but never really stuck with it long enough to help. I am a sahm of twin boys who just turned 8. One of my ds has type 1 Diabetes, the other one has Autism. I stay very busy taking care of them and dealing with all their stuff. I am 42 years old with type 2 diabetes. I need to loose weight so that I can be around for these kids because they are gonna need me! The next 6 months is my last stab at weight loss and if I do not loose what I want to--I plan on having weight loss surgery this fall. I really enjoy having people I can talk to and help motivate and help keep me motivated. I have a long road before me, but I will get there one step at a time!

Hi, like a lot of others here I've tried Spark people in the past and it worked for a while. I am addicted to food, so although I can lose weight I can't keep it off. This time I don't want to survive by deprivation, that just leads to bingeing. I want to learn to change my relationship with food. My first step is going to be trying to be mindful when I eat. No mindless munching. Pay attention when I eat and enjoy it. I am 46 (almost 47) I started by weighing 290lbs. I feel like I'm 70. I know that when I eat better, I feel better. You would think that would make it easy to eat well, but my sickness doesn't make it so easy. I normally am a very private person and don't join all these teams, but as I say I'm trying to do things differently. Please join me in my journey and help me reach my goal of 150lbs. Thanks

Hi! I'm Nikki. I was on Spark a billion years ago, but just wasn't ready, so it didn't work for me. Ok. I didn't work for me. I've rejoined, bigger than ever.
I'm tired of being tired! I'm sick of being sick! I do want to LOOK a heck of a lot better, but now, at 40 with two kiddos under 10, it's more important for me to focus on HEALTH. I want to be here for my kids as they grow up.

Hi Rheta,

I am new to SparkPeople too. I can totally relate to you about all this snow dragging you down!! I can't wait to actually see some grass and dirt again! My favorite form of exercise is walking in the woods on paths with my husband. Since we haven't been able to do that all winter, I decided to join the Curves a couple of miles from my house. I really enjoy it. It's a whole body toning workout in 30 minutes. I have also be contemplating whether or not to get a treadmill. I love to walk, just wondering if I would enjoy a treadmill as much? What form of exercise do you currently do?

Hi everyone! I am a 42 year old diabetic who has about 120 pounds to lose to be at a "healthy" weight on my Dr's chart, but am looking to only go to 140 lbs. But when you are sitting at 245+, that seems a long way to go! I lost my husband two years ago and have really struggled immensely since his death. We have two teenage daughters - one who is graduating high school this year! So my hands are very, very full. Losing weight - or even taking care of my weight - has not been a goal until my best friend since 4th grade, Melly813, really began encouraging me. Now we are both on this path, and I am hoping that I not only learn to care for myself and lose the weight I need to, but also gain some wonderful friends - all of you! It has been WONDERFUL to read what all of you are saying...it motivates me and encourages me and makes me know I am not alone! Thank you, everyone!!

Hi All!
My name is Rheta and I am new to SparkPeople. I heard about this site from a few people I work with and decided to join because I am on a journey to improve/change my health and lifestyle, and I would like to surround myself with like minded individuals who share the same goals and struggles as I do. A solid source of support is always a good thing :)
I am a single mom of two daughters, ages 14 and 20, and I have a very stressful job (I am a nurse and I manage a Home Care agency for one of our local hospital systems), so I am always busy with taking care of other people, so sometimes the challenge is taking care of myself.
I recently went to the Dr (on 2/1/14) and found out that I have metabolic syndrome and am thisclose to being a diabetic.After seeing what can happen in long term diabetics,I decided now it is time to start REALLY taking care of myself. I started following a diabetic diet on 2/2 and counting my carbs and so far have lost 13 pounds, but I don't want to lose my motivation and/or get off track...so here I am!
I think that one of my biggest challenges will be staying motivated to exercise. I am tired of seeing all this snow where I live and hate cold weather, so I always tend to fall off the wagon and become inactive during the winter months...so any/all tips would be appreciated!

hey All. So glad, and yet so sad, Im not alone, not the only one morbidly obese. But hey we are all doing what we need to about it!! Right!!

Im around 45, single white female no kids never been married. Sort of been a chunckster all my life. LOL
Started getting seriously unhealthly, sick even.... latadatada.... chest pains, easily winded, and feeling my pulse in my ears........ in bed! , and then the blood bank wouldn't take my donations anymore due to too high of hypertension.
I cant afford the medical bills or prescriptions or keep on top of any of that daily pill popping...etc. So basically I can choose to die, or ACT to LIVE!!!

I have 151 lbs in total to loose, and I've lost over 7 so far.

I've learned I'm a carbohydrate addict.
Well not exactly, I have a chemical imbalance in the brain and most "comfort foods" cause the secretion of a lot of the stuff I naturally lack.

I have to learn what to eat to maintain a normal and consistent chemical level...
so I am not overly tempted with crazy cravings for the JUNKY SUGAR FOODS that are just so bad for me.

Most all of my crap comes directly or indirectly from simply put, "BAD HABITS."
I have to relearn how to think, talk, eat, act/react, self sooth, set goals, celebrate success, and continue on forever making small smarter choice substitutions to whatever about me or my methods, ((and especially be honest about)) of whatever is not working or could get better.

That sounds so easy huh? lmao

Hi Everyone,

I'm Yvonne, 47 years old, mom in a his/mine/ours blended family of 5 children: 25 yo girl, 14 yo boy, 13 yo boy, 13 yo boy, and 4 yo boy.

Thin in my teens and physically active, I began gaining weight toward the end of college and have swung up and down on the scale, but overall trending upwards, until I stepped on the scale almost 2 wks ago and was actually shocked by where I found myself, wanting to lose 131 lbs. This follows having lost 30+ lbs 1 1/2 years ago and gaining all of it back plus another 16. Okay, enough!

I want to be healthier. I can still get around OK, but I find my body is stiffer and has more aches than I'd like. Additionally, I want to be around for my children (of the ones mentioned above, I am the mother of 2 boys, 13 and 4 years old). My 4 year old son has Down syndrome, and while I have high hopes for and am optimistic about his future, I also realize I want to be around as long as I can to be of help and support to him.

Weight/size, per se, isn't as much the issue or motivator for me (although it would be nice to be more fit and thinner again, I don't deny that). I was never one who felt ashamed of my size, and I still feel attractive overall (just not in a swimsuit!). But I do want to be healthier, for myself first, and for my family, to set a good example for my children and to live more in line with the values we hold and the knowledge we have about the effects of poor dietary and exercise habits on weight. I should mention I am the only overweight person in my family. That makes it tough!

I'm fortunate in that we already have pretty healthy base nutritional habits (no refined grains, very little sugar, fish and fowl for meat, lots of veg, etc.-- unhealthy snacks/choices are my downfall nutritionally,coupled with lack of activity). And my employer allows a 30-minute wellness walk 3X per week during work hours, so that's a great help with getting a brisk walk in.

I've tried to implement lasting lifestyle improvements before, and I have obviously failed. What will make it different this time? Only I can make it different. I have to take it a day at a time, and keep at it every day. I am about 11 days into my program, and feeling pretty pumped right now, and I challenge myself not to lose motivation and hope a few months into it, and to have the consistency, willpower, and discipline to stick with it. For life.
