Hi, I'm new to sparkpeople again after several years away. I have 100+lbs to lose, but I am very motivated and have been doing well staying on track. The weight is not coming off as fast as I'd like, but I'm hoping since I haven't worked out in God knows how long that I'm actually building some muscle back. Time will tell. I'm in it to win it! :D

Hello my name is Sherri-Ann or SA for short. I just recently started with Spark People and have had an up and down journey for the last five years. I had worked really hard and taken off over 100 lbs, then in 2011 I had a life threatening accident that changed my life, I lost a good part of my mobility during the long recovery and contributed to my regaining of the weight.

I had just started working on this again and discovered I am now diabetic so this journey is no longer an option for me, it's kind of scary. I hope to get to know some of you and find some mutual support in this process as I know it can be really tough to stay focused.

Cheers
SA

Hi Lori & Welcome! Congratulations on clearing that hurdle! I think that's what I love most about this community - it reminds us that we can choose to break the old habits and helps us find support to do so!
This doesn't seem to be a very active forum - except for the wall post feed, I haven't seen much going on here. What is your exercise of choice?

Good Morning, My name is Lori and I have been on this journey for awhile. I had lost 50 lbs but then had family issues that i used as and excuse to stress eat and gain 30 lbs back of that 50; I've not lost 10 of those and my total from my highest weight is 37 lbs lost. I have 125 lbs to go and am not allowing myself to stress eat anymore. Had a family issue this month and instead of eating I went and exercised proud of myself and the changes I am making. I know I can do this!!!

Hi - my name is Hana from northern CA. I'm returning to SP, but new to this team. I've lost and regained 20-30 pounds a few times over the past few years. When I hit 250, I was like - this is it! You've got to do something! NO MORE!! But by the time I finally got serious about moving the scale in the other direction, I topped out at 260 pounds. This time, I'm going to make a lasting change! I've lost about 20 pounds over the past 2 months or so. It's slow going, but that is okay - I want it to be FOR GOOD!
My husband is pretty supportive, although he'll throw out the occasional barb about having to eat 'diet' food. Mostly I'm hoping to find others here to help keep me motivated and pushing through the hard times.

Hello

I'm Catharine, from Melbourne Australia. I'm new here and I'm sick today!

But I can drink water, I can drink tea, I can make soup and eat that and I can take care of myself.

I look forward to settling in and becoming a semi-regular.

I seek positive, happy non-toxic people to travel with along this journey to better health.

No whining!

I'm new too. So we can be new together! I'ts so hard to get moving after a long days work, keeping up the house and kids!! It almost seems impossible to find that extra time or energy for anything else. I'm beginning to think some have more than 24 hours in a day and a metabolism on steroids (LOL). But I am not going to let all that get in may way. I think getting organized and staying focused will be a vital tool in reaching our goals. Keeping things simple and not over thought! For example; planning your meals before hand...a week or a few days in advance. Preparing the night before the next day so you don't get rushed or stressed in trying to figure out what your meal plan is for the day and end up eating out or on the run. Get up and move once every hour for about 10 minutes...especially, if you have a desk job (Like me). If you have an hour lunch, utilized 20 minutes of those for a nice walk and fresh air. I have every confidence in you that you will achieve what ever you set your mind to. WOO HOO, you go girl!!

I need to start moving. I'm going to go and look for exercises for those that have to sit or can stand, but not move too much. No lifting as of right now for me. I hope you all have a great day. Good luck in all you do.

Congratulations Karen! I was told my my doctor that for anyone trying to lose weight, just 7% off of the starting weight will show health benefits. Four pounds is a great accomplishment! Keep up the good work. emoticon

you all had some great feed back that I found useful. this last week I have been weighing myself a few times a day. this showed me how your weight can fluctuate. I actually didn't panic. YAY me :) I have also learned that I can still have foods that I love, but normal portions of it. Instead of looking at the huge number I need to lose, I have set a small goal that is realistic and achievable in a 6 week time frame, that is 4% of my BMI. I am also not looking as this as a diet or weight loss plan, but more as educating myself on nutrition. I know I probably sound like a crazy person, but trust me im not haha . my mind is my worst enemy! so with that said tomorrow is my first weigh in :) no matter what the scale says, im going to stay positive. Thank you all for being open with your journey. We can and will meet our goals!

No, you are not the only one who feels this way. For many years now, I have hidden myself from other people. I kept telling myself that it wasn't worth the fight to lose the weight. Recently my sister died from a heart attack. And yes, I can say it is worth the fight. She has lost her chance at life because she too, gave up. It kicked me into reality that I need to suck it up and get this weight off. I have children and future grandchildren that I want to grow old with. Its worth it.
I'm also a shy person. I switched shifts at work this week, and I have gotten more boosts of confidence this week by people telling me how much they miss me. I didn't even know some of them cared. So yes, it's worth it. You don't realize how people around you are aware of you personally. Keep up the motivation. You can do it. Hold me accountable when I get down. I need it.

I weigh myself once a week and always at the same time - first thing in the morning before I've had anything to eat or drink. And even small losses of 1/2 pound are celebrated because it means the scale is going in the right direction. I found the same experience with eating healthy - the better fuel I give my body, the less it craves the junk food. Last night my husband picked up fast food for supper and I was full with a plain grilled chicken sandwich (with half the bun removed) and a plain baked potato with a small amount of margarine. I didn't crave the french fries and pepsi that my husband had and I stayed well within my calorie range! Funny thing is, I'm actually craving fresh fruits and salads which I never thought was possible!

Thank you for your feed back, its greatly appreciated. i like your mirror idea, i may have to try that. i hate seeing myself :( im never in pictures for the fact i dont like the image i see. maybe ill have to get a picture and post on my fridge. yesterday i felt like i ate a huge thanksgiving dinner uggg but the good side is im where im suppose to be in my guide lines. on a very positive note, i have more energy and do not have the cravings for junk food. ive had a couple of moments that the " im bored lets eat something" hit me. im very proud that i grabbed a piece of fruit instead of digging in the cupboards for junk. must say that was probably the first time for that.

Welcome! There are times I feel full within my calorie range too. I'm referring to this as my "divorce" from my abusive eating habits. May sound strange, but it works for me. I don't want to go back to abusive, which is abusive on my body. I am a science nerd. I like things to make sense, even if only to me. Weighing myself, I have discovered if I weigh daily I have a daily negative/positive feedback on how I'm doing. I do know it really varies day-to-day, but I have learned I gain 3-4 lbs every month 5 days before I start my monthly. I also know my weight can fluctuate 2 lbs daily according to what I eat before bed the night before. I also have discovered having mirrors around the house is a great positive/negative feedback for improvements/setbacks. These are just little things that help me, they may help others too.

hi everyone! im beginning my second week on sp. as with many others I have tried losing weight before which I have failed. this time around ( my last) im not calling it a diet. I am calling it learning to eat healthy. so far I have been doing pretty well with eating healthy items. not so good at getting within my nutritional guide lines ( im under). starting my second week im meeting my guidelines. YAY me! to be honest I feel like I have over ate by being in my guide lines. does anyone else feel like this? my next question is... do you all recommend weighing in every week? previously I would be doing ok then I wouldn't lose as much as I thought I should or even gain a pound and I would get discouraged and stop all together. my thought is weigh in once a month to keep me on track as far as eating healthy and within my guidelines and not concentrate so much on pounds lost. and input or suggestions would be helpful. im just trying to figure out a way to make this a life time change without getting discouraged.

Hi and welcome back. I have returned recently too. I still am healthy with great numbers on cholesterol, blood pressure, etc. But I still am morbidly obese. I will tell you something that has recently occurred to me. I have an unhealthy relationship with food. And with any other unhealthy relationships I need a divorce. I need to get rid of the bad habits I have and replace them with good habits, then learn to live with the healthy relationship with food. Like anything causing harm, I need to get rid of it and not look back. Why would I want something that hurts me! It's what I would recommend to a friend with a cheating or abusive spouse. This is no different, only I am getting hurt by this unhealthy relationship with food. I am the only one who can correct this.

Hello all... I joined this team 5 (gulp!) years ago but never posted. At that time I lost 36 pounds before falling off the healthy wagon and gaining it all back, plus another 20. I am about to celebrate my 48th birthday and I can no longer kid myself that I'm a healthy overweight person. I was just diagnosed with fatty liver disease and the only way to take back my health is to take off the weight - so that is why I'm here. On January 1st I weighed myself for the first time and almost cried. A week later I reactivated my SparkPeople account and started tracking my calories, carbohydrate, and fat intake. I am happy to say that in three weeks I have lost 8 pounds (but I only remembered to add the weight loss tracker this week so it doesn't include the first couple of weeks loss).
The calorie tracker helped me five years ago, and I hope the message boards can keep me motivated this time.

Hi all. I'm new to the group and just getting back on this weight loss rollercoaster. I'm hoping this is the last time. I'm trying a new approach of trying to eat healthy and not think of it as a DIET. Every diet I've tried, I've failed. Of course they all work great to start...then I give in to one "deadly temptation" then another. I figure if I look at it as making healthier choices I will be more likely to succeed. Here's to hoping anyway.

ChristyDK, Being open here helps since it makes us admit our failings. If you want to make goal to start Sunday, tomorrow, and use us for accountability that would be great. My plan is to check-in every morning and evening to help with this. My other goals are already listed.

Thomas, It is wonderful to have other goals than weight related. My goal for that is to do a project in my home weekly. This next week to organize the storage room. We moved a year ago and I have not been able to do much. I get overwhelmed and hide into a book. This is my depression and something I need to overcome. I am a big believer in Christ, a born-again Christian, and I will make other goals to deal with my beliefs too.

Hopefully, we can encourage one another to make those small steps. Each building has a corner stone and a foundation otherwise the home will not be stable. So these steps are a pattern to follow on this journey! Keep up the positive thoughts and we will succeed!!!

Christydks40 - Heya!

I was reading something yesterday and I realised that wehn i make goals of a physical nature that I also needed to make goals of a social nature.

I have social phobias i think, man I can break out in a sweat at times talking, not, "oh i am moist pfff..." more like "DANG GET THAT BOY A SHAMMY!!!!" kind of sweat!

So I decided to make me some social goals to go along with my physical goals.

I would skip church luncheons after services that we usually have once a month. I decided from now on, no matter how I feel, I will attend these functions and even attempt to sit with different people each time.

We also have, at times, a moment when the choir makes their way to the front that people go around and greet others with a handshake or hug, I used to stay in front with my video camera, because i fill the service, I decided though from now on that any time this happens I will make it a point to go and say hello to others in the church.

I know it does not sound like a lot but being as self-conscious as I am, it is a big deal to me.

With my Physical and social goals I also set spiritual goals. For example, read a certain number of chapters a day or memorize a scripture every week. I am sure you get the idea.

best of luck to you,
We are here for you,

Thomas

My ticker shows 50 pounds. I know I need to lose more. However this is a short term goal that once I reach it I will purchase a bike and begin to ride forever! :-)

I find it so hard to just to start. For instance this whole last week I wanted to start walking if nothing more, Just start by walking 5 min in morning and 5 min in evening. I could not just do it. I was frustrated with myself.

However today I wwent to talmart to get some ink for printer and a couple items, I left with nothing, the last box of ink I needed I guess someone did not wanted to pay for and open the box and ink cartridge, so off to another walmart.

My point of this weird lead in?

I must have walked 10 min...

WHAT???
It didn't kill me!!!
I am able to make a check on my spark page for that exercise... [x] Walk In Morning.

I guess it is just the thought of walking alone outside thinking it will be boring. But, I have to do something, I have a short term goal of loosing 50 pounds and buying a bike so I can start riding again, have not rode a bike seriously since i was like 11. It is time to start. I cringe knowing that discouragement and fear are waiting to pounce and disrupt or destroy my plans.

My ticker shows 50 pounds. I know I need to lose more. However this is a short term goal that once I reach it I will purchase a bike and begin to ride forever! :-)

Hi all! I'm new to the forums but have been back with SP for a month or so. I'm not a very open person, but I'm trying to make the weightloss stick this time so am trying to be more involved with others. I hope to talk to you all more often....

Hi folks!! It's great reading everyone's posts! Such determination and planning is bound to have sweet success!! I'm not really new. I joined at the beginning of the year then got distracted and returned a couple of months ago but never checked in with this team. I am now and glad I did. Have a sparkerrific journery!!

Sounds great I am thinking about an evening workout of some kind, but that will have to be played by ear. I may try it, but not a concrete goal.

I am going to work on...

1) Start walking once in morning and once toward evening... start small and work up each week.
2) Keep on my 10 cups water
3) Drop regular soda and stay away from it.

Yea! I was hoping to all out start Sunday with the weigh in on Sunday morning. I did this before and found I was more mindful of what I ate during the weekend because I had the weigh-in at the end. My goals this next week: 1) Stay within my calorie range, 2) Do a minimum of 30 mins workout (including warm up and cool down)-- I will walk until I sweat, 3) drink 8 cups water daily. What 3 goals are you going to work on?

Chaplain Wagner, you are definitely not the only one who feels this way. I weigh 303, which is down from a few weeks ago. On my birthday in August I was 315 and I was able to lose 5 lbs by not eating, not healthy, so I came back to SP. My BMI is 43 so I have 130 lbs to lose to be overweight and not obese. I really don't have health problems from my obesity but I do have depression and asthma, which I have had since I was 150 lbs at 16. I am very tall for a woman at 5'11." I do wonder if all this is worth the stress of counting and obsessing over my numbers of calories, fat, carb, protein, exercise mins etc. I am a nurse and know what all this can do to me. I am back here because I have found I do need the accountability. I recently found my job was a huge negative stress on my life and was hurting me too. I did quit my job (I had that option) and am trying to get another way to bring in an income. I may take classes so I can do computer work at home. I also am going to start walking next week, even if it's half mile, it's a start. I need to get into this mind frame and not talk myself out of it daily. I am trying to stay within my calories, but my family doesn't help much, everyone is close to normal weight and don't need to think about health at this time. If you need to be kept accountable to keep on this through the struggles post here and I can try to help if you want to keep me accountable too. I know groups is the best way to do this to be successful. Let me know if you want to do this or if anyone else wants to join. If anyone has health/medical concerns I can answer what I do know. I know all this and am still here. Let me know.

Greetings, My name is Thomas. I cam back to sparks after being away for far too long. I live in Katy Texas and very discouraged with health lately.

Currently I fight the thought, "Is it worth it?"
Yes, I know it is, in the long run. However, I am 45 and weigh 391 pounds, My BMI is 54.5 and I should be 177# lighter to be at an acceptable weight, thus my catastrophic mindset is, "do i have the time to lose weight slowly? Have I pretty much sealed my fate... Do I have a year to lose 100 pounds in? Can I loose enough to make a difference in a short time... what happens if I fail?"

I post because I am curious, am I the only one who feels this way?

I re-started SparkPeople a couple weeks ago, but I haven't been good about getting on the chats. I would love to connect with people on here to keep myself motivated AND accountable. I did quit my job 3 weeks ago, a very good thing, and am trying to get healthy.

Hello fellow Iowans

My name is Joe, and I am new to SparkPeople and just like everyone else I have issues in my weight. I lost over 100 pounds about four years ago, only to gain it all back, and then some. Hoping to meet some people that have some of the same issues and point me in directions that i haven't seen yet.

I have been using the trackers on and off (much more off than on) for a while, but the past 3 weeks I have been really getting into the help and motivation of this site and for the first time and reaching out to the community as well. I started the free trial of sparkcoach on Monday and have found it very helpful. I really need to form healthy habits and am taking babysteps to do so. I have a huge amount of weight to lose so I am focusing on getting healthy and what's doable in small increments rather than the big picture. This board looks like the right one for me for a bit anyway, dang near 50. Hello to all, if you need some support add me as a friend and I will do my best. I wouldn't turn my head from support either. We can do this! emoticon
