I'm thinking these are custom made blinds. So have you looked at a company that custom makes them. Also a drapery business might be able to help.

Does any one know where a person can bring blinds in to have the "string" repaired/ replaced? I've got 2 that the draw/ pull string is frayed and I can't pull the shades up. Have to open them by turning the "wand".

Thank you for all your responses! I was having a really down day! Things are looking up. I even cleaned the top of my fridge the other day! Doesn't seem to be a big deal but I had done my WHOLE kitchen (top of cabinets the whole thing) and left the top of the fridge for DAYS....for no apparent reason. So I beat myself up for days and finally said this is CRAZY, so got up and cleaned the top of the stupid fridge it took all of 10 minutes! Sometimes I'm just nuts :):):)

Hi, Donna, I'm Rhoda. FlyLady has been my saving grace. I am a single parent of one and I homeschool. Which means two things:
1. The workforce in my house is only two strong
2. We are at home A LOT!

So the house always looks lived in, but there are only 2 of us to clean it up. My dd grumbled a lot because her friends had so many people to divide the chores up. But by doing the FlyLady thing, we are making a good dent. The other thing is that we moved in our house in Apr and are still unpacking boxes that had been stored for the last 4 years.

What we have is a very good schedule of what we need to do for each day. Our chores take about 15-30 min a day and then we are done
Mon, wed and fri are her laundry days. Tues, Thur, and sat are mine. Sunday is a free for all.
Mon she does the living room and halls. I do the entryways (front & back doors & garage) and the laundryroom.
Tues we each do our bathroom
Wed we each do our bedrooms
Thur I do the kitchen (unpacking, rearranging, deep cleaning, whatever), she does the family room.
Friday we clean up our part of the classroom
Sat she emptys all the trash cans and take the bin to the curb. I am still unpacking, decluttering the classroom or anywhere that's needed.
Sunday is supposed to be the car and outdoors, but that usually just gets done whenever.

Do we do this every week? Never! Sometimes we will do several chores on one day. Sometimes we will just catch up on the following week. But we usually get enough done that the house doesn't look too bad and we can tidy up w/in 15 min of company.

My advice is to give your children specific chores that take about 15-20 minutes a day. And set them so that everyone knows what they are to do on any given day. And then once those chores are done, don't sweat it until the following week. Eventually, you will see a change in your house.

Personal Motto: There, but for the grace of God, goeth I.

Hi Donna! I'm Katty. I loved learning about Hypatia!

I share many things with you and Jari. I dont do all the Flylady system but learnt some things and my home is always "15 minutes to company ready". The main thing I learnt -and so liberating!- was this:

IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE PERFECT

That means that a quick sweep in the kitchen leaving some crumbs on the floor is fine because it is much better than no sweep at all. Or that a quick wipe on the stovetop leaving some marks on it is better than no wipe at all -grime will be much worse when I finally have time to do it perfect.I can even be the leader of this team even when I battle with depression and have times when I have too much to do(I'm a teacher too- ENglish as a foreign language)because I know I don't have to be perfect.
The second most important thing I learnt is

THE VALUE OF 15 MINUTES( and of 10, 5, and even 2). If I am waiting for coffee to be ready I can toss paper clutter or wipe a surface. If I am too tired to clean house I talk myself into just take 2 min to do something (like put off a hot spot: things that started piling on the dining room table or clothes lingering on the chairs). Usually, if I do that one little thing, I keep the motion and do some more. And if not, I know I did something, "it doesn't have to be perfect!", and I have not guilt building and eating me up.

Hi Donna! {I think the story of Hypatia is sad, that the pearl from her headdress fell into the waterclock and stopped it, so that the time she was supposed to get married in order to have a happy marriage passed while they were still waiting for the clock to announce the time. Because of this she could not marry, and became a mathematician. I love mathematics, though, and have a degree in this Queen of Sciences!}

I understand the feeling of being overwhelmed. I am that way often enough. I do try to have a main focus in each room, like the bed in the bedroom, and the seats in the living room and the table in the dining room. Once I can keep these relatively clean, I work on the other places. I go through my children's clothes and get rid of many, meaning that I will have less laundry because they have less clothes! I try to declutter often, and to keep a container for charity in the house all the time. So when somebody has something to pass on, I tell them to put it into the charity box, and when the box is full, I drop it off.

I say all these things, but I'm still in an overcrowded house with too much stuff!

Hello MRSJARI: I suppose a proper introduction would be in order :) My name is Donna, I'm 41 and have two boys (5 and 13). I am a hs math teacher (thus Hypatia--first female mathematician of record). Thank you for your response. It's Feb. school vacation and I think I'm just feeling overwhelmed....I intended to do a room a day, I did the laundry room yesterday (2 bags of trash and 1.5 hours later) I started the kitchen yesterday and continued on that today. I still have the cabinet above the stove and the top of the fridge :( It's just getting to the point that I don't even want to walk into my own home because I see mess and work everywhere!

Hi Patricia! (I'm kind of assuming that's your name. Please correct me or tell me what you would like to be called.)

Welcome!

My house has been a problem longer than my weight has emoticon I have trouble following the FLylady system completely, so I take what I can and do it. Today, the first day of the Master bedroom week, I am washing the bedsheets & pads, turning the mattress, and this time I changed the duvet. Usually on Mondays I just wash the linens, not the pads or duvet or turn the mattress. Today I am going all out and also washed the pillows. (And wouldn't you know: My husband came home sick at lunchtime and wanted to take a nap on the bed! It is still empty because things are washing and drying. He decided that instead of rushing and changing my system, he would nap in the room a daughter recently vacated.) This is one of the few routines I actually have down, week by week. I step in wherever I can, and do what I can. I also have 5 children, two of whom recently moved out, and a husband, all of whom like to help sometimes on their own schedules. This means that I might have something scheduled and when I get there to do it, it's already done! Or I might have requested a child do something only to discover it still undone. Since I am depending upon them for much, I just take it as it is, and do what I can. I have decided that I don't have to stick to the schedules that others have made, and it's ok for my family to help in various ways. It's also ok if I Don't get things done. Bit by bit the house is getting better and the children are learning how to take care of things. (My 7yo daughter and 11 yo son know how to sort, wash, air dry & machine dry and fold or hang up, and put away laundry. They also know how to load and unload the dishwasher. Do they do it always? Definitely not! emoticon ) ANd knowing how is Definitely something that I want my children to learn, and to not be scared to Learn how if they don't know.

As for the weight, well, I'm working on that issue, too!

Okay....I know I am probably doing this a little different by not introducing myself via the questions but this seemed like the proper place for my first post (actually ever) on spark people....I am about 1/2 through the book and my main goal is "to be happy". Lofty and not specific, I know. But two things I felt that would get me there is getting a handle on my weight (I have actually lost 4 pants sizes since May before I found this site) and getting a handle on my house (HUGE problem right now). I have tried and failed at flying before, I guess I'm asking for support in both these two issues. If you saw me walking down the street you would think that I totally have my stuff together, but I don't....I'm usually not this needy---promise!

I also was at a plateau, and Just fell off! I had gained weight but didn't change my ticker, and now I am at or below the weight! It has taken me about two or so years, but I have finally broken that border. Persistance pays! You can do it!

That happened to me in July or August last year. I got so frustrated the scale started going up and I haven't been able to get my balance back. I know one can hit plateau but eventually gets over it. Sandy told me to start measuring or take photos of myself. Sometimes the scale doesn't give good numbers when one in fact is losing weight. Another reason may be that you've increased your muscle weight and look leaner but the scale records the muscle increase. That is also reversed with time. The one piece of advice I can give is DO NOT LET THE FRUSTRATION RUIN YOUR EFFORTS. Keep tracking and exercising and forget the scale for a couple of weeks to see what happens

Okay, I'm the first one, so HEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLPPPP! I am so frustrated! I sparked off ten lbs. super quick, now my scale refuses to budge! No, that's not entirely true. It's budging, just in the wrong direction! Urgh! With the exception of one major Mexican food slip up last night, I've been diligent in measuring what I eat and sticking to the nutrition tracker. I've been doing about 20 minutes of strength training and 30 minutes of cardio every single day. What's the deal?! Am I destined to be this big forever? emoticon

Not sure this is going to be useful, but I just thought of it today and decided to give it a try.

If we find we need HELP! with something, we may come here and post and get the help we need. IT's like the emergency button we have at community home. Only that we may be more likely to come to a cozy and safe place we know than go there where we know no one.

I'll leave it open and we'll see with time if it is works for us or not.
