Start slow like WalkingGrandma said..

But to get extra steps in -

Walk the long way to the mailbox
March in place during commercials
Play the Wii games that make you move

Most of all, get a pedometer if you can. I can't go anywhere without it. I even sleep with it!! If I go to the bathroom in the middle of the night I WANT THOSE STEPS lol

Just keep moving through the day. It doesn't have to be a chunk of time. But once you have a pedometer try doing regular routine stuff and then think about how to increase your step count. The 200 more a day is a perfect way to start.

THEN you will say .. wow I think I can do 10 minutes or 15 minute walks...

You can do it!! Don't get overwhelmed, take it slow.

We are all here for you!!

I think WALKINGGRANDMA's got it right. I moved from the treadmill & running to this walking program because it fit so much better in my day to day life so 1000 extra steps each day was not a problem (from 5500/day). Add the steps that make you feel comfortable without laying you up because of fatigue or soreness. However, I do think it's important to work up to moving all day long. The studies are showing that this will help to increase your metabolism much better than putting in 30 to 60 minutes of cardio a day & then sitting the rest of that day. It makes since also that it will help to balance out blood sugar spikes too - but I'm no expert on that (nor the fitness programs for that matter). My husband chuckles at me during bad weather because I walk around the house - up & down the halls, even in the garage. Nice weather is not a problem as I love to see the changes in the landscape. There's always something new to see.

Do your best, the best that right for you. You'll find your limits & gain your stride!

Welcome. I agree that you figure out where you are starting and go from there. I would recommend only 200 additional steps per day and increasing your amount by 200-400 steps per week. Too much and your joints and feet really hate you.

I actually starting walking on a flat walking trail far from my home. I would drive there and walk for ten minutes. Five minutes out and five minutes back. The next week, I walked ten minutes. Three days a week and ten minutes a day. The next week, I added another five minutes. Get the picture. When I was walking 30 minutes each time, I added a day.

It was only a few months (less than 6) until I was walking 5-6 miles and enjoying it. The dog and I would get out and walk. She dragged me up the hills and I walked down them. It worked well for both of us.

I have a very small, inexpensive MP3 player and I listen to books while I walk. It is overwhelming at times and I started this after I became a single parent.

You can do this.

This team is a great place to come & get inspired. The 10K steps a day team has been the best thing ever for me! I no longer work on getting 45 minutes on the treadmill but have ventured outside & have even been getting some hills in. I would start small. Find out how many steps you normally do in a day & build on it. Add 1000 steps to your normal movement even if it's walking in place or around the house. I also add in 10 minutes minimum each day of straight walking & sometimes that ended up being just around the garage (boring but it gets me moving). This is what I call my cardio walking. This is all do-able for a life full of day to day duties. No gym, no equipment (well, maybe a pedometer), & goals set by you & your abilities! My granddaughter now goes on my "walk-a-bouts" with me. She does enjoy it so much as do I.

Welcome to the team & take your best foot forward!

Hi and welcome to the 10K Spark Team. You made the first step by deciding that you want to get healthy! You can add extra steps in your day by taking your son for short walks, parking farther away from the store when you go shopping, or just by walking in place while you are watching tv. Just finding simple ways to move instead of sitting still are all helpful. It isn't easy starting an exercise program, but the more you move the better you will feel. If you haven't been getting many steps in during the day, don't set your goal too high till you are ready...set small goals and increase when you feel you are ready.

Good luck and don't get discouraged.... emoticon

I just want to lose weight to have enery to play with my son and not have asthma anymore. I have no time to exercise but I am going to try 10K steps aday.
