I think when the significant other makes it hard for you to make good choices you need to ask yourself why it is more difficult. "This above all, to thine own self be true. Though canst not then be false to any man." On the flip side, we all have to make compromises in relationships and in life. No one can make the right choice all the time. I think it's about maximizing and optimizing and being willing to course correct when we do get off track.. When there's really a problem then it's time to talk.

This is a good topic/feed! I have been making bad food choices and reading the stories below encourage me and give me ideas and focus. Some give me a chuckle :-0

Good mantra Carol!
"YOU are responsible for your own choices"
"I am responsible for my own choices"!

I need to put that up as well, I use excuses for eating all the wrong stuff. It's Chrismas, it's someone's birthday, it's a work thing, I'm upset, it's lunch with friends, it's Tuesday...!!!!

Need to correct and replace the justification with something better. emoticon

Good advice CATSNKT...so sorry for your loss. It puts things in a different perspective. I love my guy...but he sure can drive me nuts.

So how do you tell the significant other in your life that they are making it more difficult for you to make good choices? Is it just an excuse? That's often true for me...more than I would care to admit.

I am going to write down..."YOU are responsible for your own choices" and put it everywhere. A good motto for the upcoming holidays.

Haha! Well that's a good "spill it!"

Husbands are great...but they can sure sabatoge a healthy eating plan in a hurry! And, when they are around...it's all about their plans and what they want to do. I totally get it.

Ok. I am gonna spill it. My hubby just retired for the Navy after 30 years. He has been gone a lot of our 27 years of marriage and you just learn to adjust.
Well, he has been home with me everyday and he is driving me crazy. He did not want to go to work right away. He wanted time off to relax. Enough of that. He needs to go back to work NOW. LOL!

Thanks Boogity! There's lots of good stuff on this thread!

I have tried chia seeds...used to put them in my oatmeal. I know they are so good for you...I may get some at Ever'mans and add them to my smoothie. I've also been hearing good things about pumpkin seeds...another one to do some research on!

Posted this on my blog and Carol said I should put it here, so here goes! :)

I have a crush on those "Eat This, Not That" guys. I have no idea what they look like, don't care. I read the "Grocery Store Guide" when it first came out, and it opened my eyes so wide I thought they'd pop right out of my head. I was in a rut before that, buying everything I'd always bought and not really paying attention to the new stuff. New breads and pastas - with FIBER in them! New spices and herbs that weren't available when I started my family. There's lot of crap I don't need but a lot that I just didn't know I needed. I lost 25 pounds eating "this and not that" and tracking it on Sparkpeople.

So when I got back here last week, having gained back 5 pounds and lost some of my good habits, I checked to see what was new and ordered two new books - one for grilling and one for 350 calorie meals. They came yesterday and I've read one cover to cover and the other I'm going through today. LOTS of new ideas. No, I won't make everything in the books, but I will use a lot of it.

Oh, and new products? Who knew? I can buy frozen POTSTICKERS!! AND I can prepare them with a little quick sauce that fits perfectly in my diet! POTSTICKERS!!

I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE you "Eat This, Not That" guys!!!

Breakfast is the hardest meal of the day for me. I hate eating in the morning.
My go to breakfast that fills me up and has been my secret to getting my metabolism rev'd up every morning is Jillian Michael's chocolate whey protein . It's low in sugar which is the best part. I like to mix it with Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Milk 10 ozs., 2 tablespoons of PB2 (Powdered peanut butter), 3 grams of Dietary Fiber and one packet of Truvia.
The whole meal weighs in at 160 calories, 6 grams of carbs, 8 grams of fat, and 14 grams of Protein. It feels me up and then I eat fruit or some greek yogart about 2 hours later.
This has been my life saver this time while trying to lose weight. I've been using this since the beginning of the year.

I discovered some awesome almond cookies in the bread aisle at Publix...Almondina biscuits They are a little pricey, about $3.50 a pack, but so tasty...133 calories for 4 pieces, 20-23g carb, and 12 mg sodium. They are crunchy like biscotti and come in different flavors. I'm trying really hard to not overeat this weekend, and these little treats are helping. Just gotta keep hubby away from them! LOL!

And my latest Bolthouse Farms salad dressing is Honey Mustard Yogurt. My daughter loves the Ceasar. I hear Walmart sells this brand now. Gonna look for it there cuz it will likely be a better price than Publix.

Another latest craze of mine is freshly ground flax seeds...I buy the whole seed in bulk at Ever'man's and grind them in my magic bullet. You need to read all the good stuff about flax seed on line! I mix them in yogurt and they make me feel full....

I haven't been to Everman's in a long time. I guess I need to go back. I bought a six pack of sodas there last time that didn't have high fructose corn syrup in them. While I don't drink soda that much I really liked them.

Good tips Carol, I am suppose to watch the sodium.

The only tip right now is that I am trying to get out of the habit of using packaged foods, and going back to cooking from scratch.

Carol is sharing her secrets today...

Enricos low sodium salsa at Evermans is another one of my favs I keep on hand at ALL times. Most salsas are low in calories...but sodium is out the roof. Enricos has it all, including great flavor!

Today I found new Weight Watcher cheese flavors at Wal-mart...Smoked flavor string cheese, cheddar cheese sticks, AND Colby Jack cheese sticks. OMG I am in Heaven! All low in calories, low in fat AND, as cheeses go, low in sodium!

I also buy oat bran in bulk at Evermans....ya gotta keep things moving chicas!

Tell me YOUR food secrets!

Sugar-Free Torani Syrups at World Market are da BOMB! I am having diet hot chocolate (25 cals) with SF chocolate syrup and SF hazelnut syrup added right now. YUMMY!

They are located on the back wall of the store at Cordova Mall. Be sure to choose "sugar-free." The regular sugar-laden ones are all right there too and sometimes they get all mixed up together.

Hi, Well, I have gained 40 pounds this year. Not a good thing. My gym membership has run out and could not afford to renew it. I really want to start walking 4 to 5 days aweek but I don't take the heat well and I really wish I could find someone in Pensacola who would want a walking partner. If you know of anyone in the 9th Ave area around PJC or there about please let me know.
Thanks,Ruthie

I got the book Belly Fat Cure by Jorge Cruise and freaked out when I realized how much sugar is in everyday foods! He advocates no more than 15 grams of sugar and 120 grams of carbohydrates a day. I'm working my way down.

What is surprising is that when I focus more on lean protein and vegetables, I'm staying full longer than I was when I was eating all the carbs and sugar. So, I'm not getting the gnawing hunger that makes me grab for the closest snack (usually chips).

Drinking water all day helps. So does starting with a big breakfast: eggs, ham or bacon, half a bagel spread with cream cheese or peanut butter and tea sweetened with Truvia. Cutting out breakfast cereal was my first step.

I'll let you know more as my journey progresses.

emoticon Pahina! I know I need to lower my sugar intake but my willpower is sadly lacking. Any tips that have helped you resist the sugar?? I don't drink much diet soda but that actually usually helps to curb my sugar craving at least a little bit for a little while.

I'm working on a low carb/low sugar diet which will supposedly get rid of the belly that developed as I moved through perimenopause. It's not Atkins---I tried that once about 20 years ago and was ready to murder for a potato after two weeks--focused more on low sugar than low carbs.

I've also quit drinking diet soda since it causes my stomach to try to gnaw through to my backbone from "hunger," so what's the point! I've started sweetening my morning tea with Truvia (stevia) instead which does not have the same effect on me.

I have found that I feel much better all day if I have a substantial breakfast that includes a lot of protein (eggs, bacon/sausage, ham) and cheese. In the last week, I've dropped almost 2 pounds---so maybe it's working!

They are quite tasty...I ate too much the night of the super bowl...but it coulda' been a whole lot worse.

My friend NVDONNA told me about Jicama root. I bought some yesterday at Publix. It's kinda like a sweet potato, but the meat is white. I peeled it and cut it into chunks and steamed. It's a good substitute for potatoes. Very filling, too.

Winn Dixie sells "Eat Smart" salsas, queso and bean dip...low calorie and low sodium. I haven't actually tasted them yet...bought them for superbowl Sunday...paired with my Bearitos no salt chips that I get at Evermans...I am hoping for a "no weight gain" superbowl Sunday!

I try to eat low during the day, because my weak spot is after I get home. I am bad about eating lots of packaged, prepared foods instead of "natural", but fortunately many of them are getting more healthy.

I try to eat a lot of high fiber things - Nature's Own double fiber bread, Fiber One and Fiber Plus bars (these are yummy but around 140 calories, so use sparingly!,)Thomas Multigrain Light English Muffins, oatmeal.

I eat a light fat free yogurt for lunch at school everyday, and take a light string cheese, Fiber bar (as mentioned above) and something else to snack on. Emerald Almonds and Craisins both come in 100 calorie packs which control my portion size. Those twisted honey wheat pretzel sticks are good (8 to 10 for 100 calories depending on brand)and the thin Triscuits.

I eat bananas, apples, grapes, and strawberries as snacks also. I buy Very Veggie bagged salad and add sugar snap peas, broccoli, cauliflower (all cleaned and packaged!), mushrooms, and grape tomatoes. I use the spritzers or Kraft Free Caesar Italian (this makes a good marinade, also).

I buy frozen dinners - Kashi is good, and Healthy Choice has come out with some more "natural" meals, too. I have just started buying the frozen veggies that are packaged for one person, too. Sometimes I cook a chicken breast or piece of salmon with salad and veggie.

Treats - low fat or fat free fudgsicles, Blue Bunny Orange Dream Bars (70 calories), Edy's fruit bars, hard candy (like mints) to keep my mouth busy. I eat other treats, but that's when I'm "cheating"!

I haven't been watching the sodium because my blood pressure has always been fine, but it's slowly creeping up so I am going to start paying more attention to that.

emoticon I buy Yerba Matte Tea and Oolong tea at Everman's Health Food store. I drink the "Smooth Move" Tea when I need a cup. I buy organic product as often as I can. I use the organic lemon juice and I eat 1/2 grapefruit daily and 1 apple. I started taking Omega 3 capsules, as I had been taking flat seed with my fiber. I've been watching some of Jon Gabriel's clips on YouTube as they are interesting.

I am not ignoring this, but I am thinking. I am working on getting back on track. I am trying to get back to basics. Mindful eating and exercise. I did discover a new treat that really soothes the cravings - WW mint ice cream sandwich.

Thanks Carol for sharing. Hope others will share too. emoticon

Ok I will start.

During the week I eat about the same thing every day. I take my lunch and make sure to keep plenty of fruit in my office. I eat really light for dinner...usually a half a bag of tossed salad with Wishbone spritzers, and maybe baby carrots. My weekday calorie intake is about 1200 calories per day.

Starting Friday night through Saturday, I allow myself more calories (as much as 2000), but I try really hard to keep my sodium intake low. Sometimes it isn't possible, but if I do splurge and have something like pizza, I just accept that I am going to gain a couple of pounds, but I know that it is water-weight, so I up my water intake to get it off quickly. BTW, if I have pizza, I make sure it is GOOD pizza and well worth the calories...like Ozone or Hopjacks...no crappy Pizza Hut or Domino's.

I may gain a little over the weekend, but it always comes off quickly when I get back to my strict eating on Monday. Oh yeh, on Sundays I gradually taper myself to getting back to the weekday eating plan by still allowing some relaxation, but not as much as Saturday. If I do this...each week by Friday, I will hit a new low on the scale...and that's what I record as my weight. Knowing I will get to relax a little on the weekend helps me get through the week.

Other than lots of fruits/veggies, here are some of my food must haves:
Smart Balance products - peanut butter, butter spray
Smuckers sugar-free strawberry preserves
Bearito's salt-free corn tortilla chips (I buy these at Everman's)
Dessert Flower Mango Peach Salsa (virtually sodium free!)
Arnold whole wheat sandwich thins
Wishbone salad spritzers
Daisy light sour cream
Plain oatmeal
Weight Watcher's Latte flavored bars and ice cream "candy bars"
Weight Watcher's frozen dinners (Chicken Enchilada Suiza makes me feel like I am having a Mexican fiesta!) These meals have a lot of sodium, so be careful.
Weight Watcher's string cheese and cheddar cheese snacks (far less sodium than other low fat or fat free cheeses)
Kashi Frozen meals (some of these are very low in sodium as frozen dinners go...Myan Harvest Bake is my favorite.)
Mrs. Dash
Diet soda...yeh...I drink diet soda on the weekends...so shoot me!
MGD 64...a beer on the weekend is a real treat!

I know a lot of you have kids and you are on tighter food budgets than I am, so this plan may not work for you, but you might be able to use a few of my tips. My hubby doesn't expect me to cook...and that helps me a lot, but he cooks and I have to deal with his good food being in the house!

Share your ideas and helpful hints...don't be shy!
