Even though it was a long drive for me, I thoroughly enjoyed myself, and was able to walk faster and farther than I usually do - probably because of that nice track! And I even mowed all my lawns later that evening... Remember the 2 pounds that I was complaining had come back? By the end of Saturday they were gone again! And it was so nice to meet Carol and Nancy and Becky. I will definitely go again!

November 8th is the day I will be returning from my vacation/business trip to Vegas, but I still want you guys to meet and walk together. I'll catch up with you in December.

I enjoyed myself so much, I may decide to go to the track more often on Saturday mornings. My husband said he might join me. It just felt so good to do something different...and to be outside in the fresh air. So far, my hip that usually complains when I do impact-type exercise is being quiet, so this might just work out.

If I decide to go again, I'll let you guys know...the more the merrier!

I'm guzzling the water too Nancy...I was pretty shocked that I had the stamina to run laps. I have never been one to like running. Those intense spin classes are paying off.

But let me add just a little more. I started all this at 194 pounds. At my first spin class, all I did was sit and pedal...and think to myself, "What the h*** have I gotten myself into?" Little by little, I've built up my endurance. It didn't happen overnight. I am not an athlete. I am 50 years old. I just want you guys to know that you can do this. I just takes consistency...do a little bit every day. Baby steps...just baby steps.

Hi Camil, it was great--nice weather and a good track. I sweated like a pig--I am on my 10th cup of water already today. Carol is a track star. Got to meet Diane & Becky and talking while we walked made the laps go by fast. We did 2.5 miles - 10 laps if I counted correctly.

Sorry we missed you today but we hope to make this a monthly get together. So I hope that we can meet next month--2nd Saturday puts it as November 8th for our next meeting. emoticon

I won't be able to join you on October 4th, I really regret it.
I would suggest that you meet at the track (called the soccer field on UWF maps). Depending on the weather, if you wanted more of nature walk, you could go across the street (with your back to the entrance of the track, leave the parking lot and cross the road) that puts you almost in the wildlife sanctuary with trails that cross country folks and mountain bike riders use.
If you wanted the nature trail with boardwalk, It's on the North side of the campus (Park in the NW corner of lot G)
Mostly I run on the roads and sidewalks in the morning, few people, few critters, and enough biting bugs to make me move faster.
For the first gathering, if you started at the track and explored, it could be an interesting adventure.

I haven't been around because I lost my job and have been busy looking for a new one and adjusting to a new job and schedule. I logged on to inquire whether this group ever meets to walk together and then I found this topic!!

I would love to join you guys for a walk at the track. And I'm off on Saturdays! Have you nailed down the details yet?

I live in Gulf breeze so it's kind of a trek for me but so is everything else lol.

I have not been keeping track of my food or doing anything constructive about my health for about a month now. Suddenly losing my job kind of threw everything off track. Ready to start back now. Having people to walk with would help get me back into more activity. I think it a great idea!

My son is a student at UWF right now. Not that he ever calls me anymore since he moved out near the campus this summer...Anyway, I can ask him about it. I have never been on the campus, so I don't know where anything is!

I looked at the campus map today. It does not list a track, but the girl in my office (a student there), said she thinks it is around the soccer field. On the map it does show a big circle around this field. The field is located past the Pelican field on the right, almost to the second entrance/exit to UWF. Does anyone know if this is where it is located??

There is (or was last time I was a student there) an oak grove with a covered pavilion at UWF. If memory serves it's right behind the new Baptist Student center. They have picnic tables and everything. And very close to it (where the gym was) there was a little sandwich shop. I'm not sure if it's open on weekends, but they had fairly healthy offerings. That was a few years ago, but it might be an option.

Also, as far as walking on a track, if you don't mind the drive, the PJC campus in Milton has an indoor track. I'm not sure about restaurants in the area, but since that is also where the horticulture program is based it's one of the prettiest campuses, and they have large garden areas with different types of flowers planted. It might be a nice area for a picnic as well.

Michelle in my offic attends a night class there. I will ask her tomorrow and see if she can give me directions. Surely with all the grounds at UWF there has to be a really nice spot to have a picnic. I think that would be nice. And considering the time of year, the weather should be perfect. I will ask around.

Wow...thanks for the update on the PJC track, Becky. I had no idea. So what's say we walk at UWF??? I'm not super familiar with the campus...where to go, park, etc?? Can anyone help? Suggest a place to meet on the UWF campus???

And we need to decide on a time and how we want to handle lunch...bring stuff or go to a restaurant. I'm open to either.

I know there is a track at Ferry Pass Middle School. I walked it a couple years ago, on another diet. I have never walked it on the weekends. I have never been to UWF track, so I really don't have anything to compare it to. I am sure the UWF one is better. Do they just let anyone use it, like PJC, even if we are student?? There are also some great food places on 9 mile road just down from there. Oops, I guess I had better stop thinking Chinese Buffet...ummmmm.

I would love to join you all, if newbies are invited. This whole Spark People thing has already been an inspiration to me but I definately think meeting some of the success stories in person will help. Just FYI..PJC track is torn up right now. Evidently they are moving the ball field from their Milton campus and making the ball field here larger, and then making the track smaller. My husband provides sod for the campus. According to their grounds dude, they are spending 3 millions dollars on the rennovations. He did not know of the completion date. But if you drive by the track you will probably think, like me, it will be a while. Please count me in on the walk and lunch.

Saturday Oct 4th sounds good to me. I love UWF--my son goes there and it is close for me but I do prefer the idea of using a track. It would be easiest on everyones body. Plus it would be a more measurable distance.

The walk and lunch sounds great. But I think everyone is right, we need to wait until it is in the lower 70's maybe for it to be truly enjoyable. Saturday morning sounds good to me since I work part time Mon-Fri until 12 noon.

UWF has a track, trails, woods and hills. When the weather is cooler, it would be great.
PJC has the track and is closer to restaurants.

I'm fine with walking at PJC, then going somewhere to picnic. Any suggestions for a date or place to picnic?

Or what about walking at UWF...JJ, I know you are familiar with that. Any thoughts?

BAMAGIRL and I met for lunch today...and we decided we should try a team get together again.

Anyone interested in a walk at PJC, then a healthy-foods picnic or maybe just a lunch outing without the workout so we aren't all hot and sweaty? We have to learn to eat out without blowing it.
