I joined WW back in 2006, and over the next 18 months I lost 65 pounds. I was maintaining really well, but then my husband got sick in April 2013. That was definitely a challenge, but he was rehabilitated to actually driving the car, and living his life by Oct 2013. Then Nov 8th 2013 he had a stroke, and life has been very challenging ever since.

I have gained 40 pounds I don't want, and I have been so overwhelmed in my role as his caregiver, that I was struggling to get myself motivated for action.

But about 3 weeks ago something shifted in my Spirit, and I was able to put a plan in to play and actually see progress. I have also been doing October:Unprocessed on fb, and that too has been incredibly motivating.

So, I have cancelled my WW etools and active link, and joined SP. I'm looking forward to the experience. I look forward to my success.

Apply Peace... Just Breathe... I can DO it!

Love your new Month a new day a new beginning.
Your plan sounds very great KURTZIE1998.

I have 7 pounds to my next short term goal, I am doing a 10lbs short time goal on Spark each time, until I reach my 128 lbs. Each time I reach that 10 lb loss it makes me feel more confident since June 2014 I have reach the 10 lb goal 4 times working on the 5th time right now :)

I'm sure there is way more to this than can be brought out in one post, but if you were eating proper portions and exercising why you didn't lose weight. For me, the key was changing what I ate not how much. Focused on more veggies and protein, cut out sugary stuff that didn't stick with me.

Hang in there. You have to explore and find out what works for you. You will get lots of good advice here.

I started this journey when I gained weight after being stuck in bed for nearly a year. I gained weight but none of my doctors were worried because they were more concerned with diagnosing my vertigo.

But then I kept gaining even after the diagnosis and still seemed unconcerned. I went to Weight Watchers and learned NOTHING. I already ate well. My doctor even sent me to a nutritionist thinking she could help but she kept looking at my food journal and her only recommendation was to eat more calories. Everything else was fine--from portion control to eating enough vegetables, etc. Again, nothing helpful.

My husband was diagnosed with diabetes so a lot of the health focus shifted to him for a while and, during that time, I gained another 20 lbs.

At the beginning of this year, I weighed more than I have EVER. I also finally started losing weight. Then I visited my mother and regained some of it. Came home and lost all of the weight I had regained. Then my son visited and cooked for me and I regained the weight I had lost--again! So I lost almost all of it when I tore my meniscus and was stuck back in bed for two months before an orthopedic specialist finally gave me a shot and, in an instant, I was pain free.

I was also diagnosed with severe osteoarthritis and all of my research has said the same thing: lose weight to ease stress on the joints. I am still overweight and I'm determined to get my BMI into a healthy range.

I know what to do. I know how to eat well. I can do this. And I have the support and encouragement of my loved ones. I also am about to face a string of food-centric holidays: three birthdays, Halloween candy, Thanksgiving, and then Christmas.

If I can end the year without gaining anymore weight, that would be good. If I can end the year having lost some more weight, that would be great!

PS: I still don't have any friends here on SparkPeople so, if you're looking to add someone, please add me.

Thanks everyone!!!! I am still struggling with my weight, I was down nine and now I am up two. I have not done anything different staying within calories, Trying my best to follow the wheel. This is just so upsetting. I am so glad I have this place to vent. I am in this for the long haul. So I am just going to have to deal with the bumpy ride. emoticon

Meemaw57 I know what you mean about pressure from friends. Maybe they have underlying guilt that they are not taking steps to be healthy and feel judged. At any rate, this is your journey not theirs. Do it for you. I just tell friends to go ahead and enjoy, but I secretly feel better knowing I am making better choices for me.

Kurtzie1998 I like your goals. Very doable. The short term goal I am working on right now is to lose 20 pounds by my birthday at the end of November. I have 6 more pounds to go!

Thanks PGAINES! I really think I need all the help I can get. That is why I am here. All of the people I am around are very over weight I mean most of them need to loss over 200 pounds and they just do not want to do anything about it. Everything is about food it is hard. I love these people. But they get so angry when I choose to not let food be the center of my life. I try to be kind and just tell them I am not going to eat unhealthy. They take it so personally. As if I am trying to force them to eat healthy too. I know losing weight has to be a personal choice believe me I know. But I just do not understand why eating healthy can't be one also. If anyone out there can help me with this. I would really like some advice. I not it is good to just vent.

Welcome Meema57! I restarted too and its really nice to talk to people going thru the same struggles and goals. Sometimes all we need is to have a place to vent our frustrations and get motivation. Keep tracking your food, that's always an eye opener for me. Have a great week!

Great goals Donna! breaking up your exercise into manageable times is good. I need to do that myself. I do find when I track both exercise and food it keeps me motivated. Good luck and you can do this!

My goal is to be healthy, live longer and walk longer so I will be in shape for backpacking. In order to get my BMI down to where it should be I need to lose 30 lbs.

To accomplish that, I commit to:

1. 1 HOUR of structured exercise 4 DAYS A WEEK -- this is my biggest challenge.
2. SET A TIMER so I exercise for 10 minutes and then eat a small meal.
3. Record all of my exercise and food.

When life happens everything I know I should not do ......happens.. This time no diet for me I just want to eat healthy and feel better. I am sick and tired of being sick and tired.

I used to think it was easier to lose lots more quickly if you had a lot to lose, but then I realized no matter where you start it's that last pound that is the hardest to get rid of. And we will lose that last pound!

I am what I think you think I am.

Lost 10 pounds so far. Next short goal is 10 more pounds by the end of November (my birthday). Added in cardio 2x a week and strength workouts at home. Changed up my diet to more of a high protein and cut way back on sugar. Working pretty good so far.

Welcome back to all of you who have returned. Also HELLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Newbies!

I lost 5 pounds. Took forever! Woo!Hoo!

Building my bucket list and enjoying the ones I've accomplished!!! I quit smoking and have visited 34 out of 50 states. But I want to see the grand canyon, smithsonian institute, eat lobster in Portland Maine, a train trip for two months down the east coast then rent a car to other states I have not been to in the South and have enough money to thoroughly enjoy Vegas or Atlantic City and I'm sure I will think of other adventures.

Hi, I am getting refocused again, on regaining control of health & weight. I walked a 5k glo run in Aug, did ok, 57 min I think. Am going to do the Susan Komen Cancer 5k in Oct. I have started tracking food again, even the bad. It really helps to connect with other people striving for the same goals. Here's to everyone having a great day today!

Haven't used Spark for at least 2 years. I'm at top weight ever and know I need to stop the madness. I'm starting with baby steps, like just being mindful of what I'm eating and trying to be a little more active.

Hello Patti and Thanks so much for the welcome message! I walked in 3 5Ks last year. I intended to train, but it just didn't happen. I just got out of bed the morning of the walks and did them. I finished them within the 90 minutes given. 88 minutes was my longest time and 77 my best. I'm hoping training will put me closer to the 60 minute mark. The first walk was with several friends they all finished in just under an hour. I am the biggest and the oldest of the bunch and I have some breathing issues. I was just so pleased that I finished. I hit my inhaler at the start of each race and managed to only pull it out once during each walk. And each time it was after climbing a hill.

I'm sure you'll do fine with your 5K, but I must tell you that walking with a large group is a bit different than walking alone! You just have to keep your own pace which will be a challenge as the event starts. I honestly feel like with the weaving in and out of the crowd the actual mileage is several tenths more than the 3.1 course.

Thanks again for the welcome. Can't wait to hear how you do!

Hi Babbling-Broad,

Welcome to our Forum! You are in the right place, and it sounds like you've made some good goals. That's a lot to lose in 4 months; don't be discouraged if you achieve half of that--it's still progress!

I'm signed up for my first 5K August 23. My grandson and I went out in the neighborhood over a route I'd measured and did it in 60 minutes. I hope to best that time with the real thing. Wish me luck!

Hang in there! SparkPeople has some many interesting features and ways to learn how to be successful. I try to make over 100 SparkPoints each day. In the meantime, I'm getting fit and learning a lot about health and fitness.

Welcome to the group,

Patti emoticon

Hi All! I'm rejoining SparkPeople....again.... sigh. My primary goal is just to start feeling better. I have become such a slug. I also want to "play" with the grandkids. So many days I feel like I am just watching them grow and not really a part of it.

In the meantime I set a mini goal to train for a 5K walk in September. I'm also making a real effort to stay hydrated and drink more water.

I've also set a mini goal to lose 38 lbs by the end of the year. I'll still have a long road to travel after that, but I'll be closer to where I want to be than I am now.

Looking forward to getting to know you all!

Thanks for the Birthday Greetings! I was pleased with the results of all my celebrations. My husband took me out for dinner at our favorite restaurant on Wednesday evening, and then my best friend took me to lunch yesterday. I planned my meals around those events with the nutrition tracker, and decided what to eat with it as well.

It was a success, and now I can get back to my home cooked meals. I love the recipes and the recipe finder on SparkPeople.

That's all for now, emoticon

My new goal is 120 by December 31. It's only 7 pounds. I'm giving myself lots of time because the pounds may be harder to lose as I get down to my goal weight. Anyway, it's something to shoot for.

Hi Marion and You Other Sparkers,

I'm in Washington State and started with SparkPeople 2 years ago in March. I didn't keep up with it very well until after I had double hip replacement and then was told I "can exercise" by the doctor this February. I had managed to lose 15 pounds in the year and a half. I've taken off 18 more with lots of exercise and tracking with SparkPeople continuously.

I write this today because it is my birthday and the date I had as my goal. I fell 2 pounds short of the goal, but it feels like I made it since people are now realizing that I've lost weight. It feels good!

Now I'll have to set a different goal and date. It won't take me two years to reach it, though.

I know this weight will stay off. And that makes this a VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY.

Hi Patti,

I'm in Spain (Mallorca to be exact) where this year I am finding it very difficult coping with the heat. I don't think the extra pounds are helping!

We have a shared pool but all the slimline youngsters surround it and I don't feel up to displaying my body at the moment emoticon

It seems such a waste - hopefully next year!

Hi Marion,

You can lose it with all the tools SparkPeople gives us!

What "hot country" do you live in now?

You are doing the right thing by posting on the message boards and getting to "know" people that way. Keep it up!

A goal might be to fit that swimsuit next summer....

I moved to a hot country and put on 2 stone!

Now I have the weather but don't want to be seen in a swimsuit. I wish to get back to a weight where I am comfortable on my own skin again.

Breaking point was when I carried some shopping home and put them on the scales as they were so heavy and realised that I was carrying twice that amount with me 24 hours a day!

Oh and by the way my name is Marion and I am 60 years of age.

I'm almost to my goal weight and I feel better than I have in 25 years. My weight is finally down to what it was when I married my husband in 1989. And that was after a year of NutriSystem. This time I'm going to keep it off!

Gluten Free is such a hot topic these days. Surely, you will find a source for making your menus. I'd try the local library to start with, and the internet resources, too. Once you learn what has gluten you can avoid it. Just thought of something...I had a book called "Lose the Wheat....something by Rodale Publishing. It had a lot of GF recipes.

SP menus are not GF friendly. I sure wish they were! I need guidelines of what to put on my menus. My neighbor said to just eat lots of veggies and fruit! And limit everything else.. Lol not much help to me.. I will get it figured out though!

Hi Nola,

It sounds like you have it under control. Making menus is a good idea, particularly when you are limited to gluten-free foods. SparkPeople makes it easy. I usually put in what I plan to eat ahead in the Nutrition Tracker, and then I can see how much I plan to eat--calories, carbs, protein and fat (and I track fiber). Then I can make adjustments as I need to. I haven't tried SparkPeople's menu planner, but that might be the way to go, too.

Anyway, go girl! You're on the right track.

Best wishes,

Patti emoticon

Hi Patty! I am really excited about this change of diet. When I weighed in this morning I was down another pound. I think I have the hang of the GF diet...at least I think I do! I will be using what I remember of the WW menus just to guide me, but make everything GF. It's been a long time since I weighed and measured my foods. LOL I did okay today. I'm taking it one day at a time. Still don't have the menus made out for the week, but I'll get there... Thanks for your encouragement... Looking forward to my weigh in on Friday or Saturday. There is so much information on this site. I'm in awe! Have a Great Week!!

Hi Nola,

I know the feeling. It can be done, though....SparkPeople has really helped me. I work hard to get those SparkPoints above 100 every day. I find it can be done, too, by entering my food and exercise, getting bonus points from the teams and from SparkPeople's incentives. It's fun to see what the wheel will bring. Anyway, Those pounds have come off slowly but surely, and now I'm only 4 pounds from my goal. Maybe I won't make it by my birthday on August 7, but I'll be close!

I have been told to start a Gluten Free Diet..no wheat, rye or barley. I am looking forward to the tons of support and challenges this site has to offer. When I hit the scales at 170.4 in March, I was in shock! I knew then I had to do something. Then I was told to change my diet. I found this site Friday the 18th. I decided to start Monday and would devote this weekend to getting some GF foods and setting up a menu. I have belonged to WW for many, many years, but I just can't seem to get into it! I started the Plexus and lost 10 pounds the first couple of weeks and have plateaued... Now I will be working hard on exercising and learning a new diet. I am thankful for all the support on this site!

For me, it came as a shock that I had tipped the scales at more than 160 pounds. I was being monitored for blood pressure and weight due to a medicine I was taking. When I weighed in, I couldn't believe that my body fat was into the obese category. That was over 2 years ago now. I got off that medication and started with SparkPeople. My weightloss didn't take off right away though. It's just since I've had a Personal Trainer and gotten serious about tracking my food intake and doing my exercise that I've seen the weight come off. Now I'm down to what my weight was in 1989 when I got married. The energy has come back, too, and I can look at maintaining the new weight in the future.

For me it has to be how I look not what the scale always shows. Muscle weighs more than fat and it sounds like you're building muscle with your workouts. Hang in there!!

Hi, I am a big person. I'm five foot ten inches tall and weigh 239. I have size twelve feet and the rest of me is in proportion to that so I'll never be a slim Jim. I have a roll around my midriff and lots of belly fat. I exercise by going to the gym and doing the elliptical then weights then back to the elliptical or I go swimming, or I go on a four mile walk. I do something five days out of the week. I follow the nutrition counter diligently. I've weighed 239 for several months now but propel say I look smaller and more trim and how much weight have I lost. Should I accept it that people think I'm smaller or should I be discouraged because I haven't lost a pound.

I want to loose some weight to be healthier than I have been for a few years. I am a Type 1 diabetic with an A1C of 13.8. I quit taking my insulin a few years ago to loose the weight but I'm starting to have lots of problems (ie...memory problems, hair loss, balance etc...). It's not a good way to loose weight but it's what worked for me. Now, I am back on my insulin and trying to keep my weight down. It's not easy. I have gained 16 lbs in two months. I need help.

My primary goal is to live as vibrantly and free as possible. Other goals are:

1) to be a good role model of self care (I'm a case manager for homeless and at-risk youth)

2) to be able to be a fitness partner with my kids, continue to hike, bike, adventure with them and my grandkids (none yet) into my old age

3) to feel and look great

4) specific goals such as "do another marathon" "hike Pioneer's peak" etc.

Hi there,
I joined Spark People last week but have belonged before. I got off track and lost my way for a bit but I am back to continue my healthy journey of losing the weight I gained and strengthen my body and mind.

I have a great memory of Minnesota. In 1972 went there to go fishing. Stayed somewhere that had log cabins. I had a guide for a fishing day and what we caught in the morning he cleaned and cooked for breakfast. The best breakfast ever!!! I caught northern and waleye. The scenery was beautiful. Wow! what a great memory. emoticon

Many reasons for wanting to loose the weight. #1 is to be healthy. I turned 50 in February and in May I found out I have gall stones. Ugh emoticon . I have found in the last year that I can control the blood pressure by walking on the treadmill. Now looking to lower the cholesterol. have no desire to spend the rest of my life on those meds. None of these things were an issue 10 years ago. emoticon

Wow! You have already lost quite a few pounds. APPLAUSE! You will find what type of exercise works for you. Leave the guilt, and the shoulds, and give yourself the freedom to just play. Turn on your favorite music, and shake your booty! Go to a park and see if you remember how to swing. Just move. You are already doing a great job, just keep it up!

I'm with you regarding motivation to exercise. I see the info on SP but one sits to watch. Some have ten minutes to work out and I feel "Oh, not right now."
If you want some one to help keep you accountable to work off the love handles, then you can help me be accountable to work off the love rolls. emoticon
I just turned 62 and have a daughter getting married in August. That alone should motivate me but doesn't. I'm happy she's getting married.
Just sparkmail me and we can go for the slim. emoticon

I'll be 64 at the end of the summer and don't want to have this extra weight on me. I started in April and am half way to goal. I want to be healthier, feel healthier and look healthier.

I'll be retiring in several years and I want to develop some long lasting healthy habits.

The support at SP is the best, The challenges are great.

I do though, need motivation for exercising - a lot of motivation.

I'm in your boat. I lost 60 lbs three years ago and slowly it hit my hips AGAIN. I did have two annoying health issues the doctors took forever to figure out. But I'm healthy and read to get back in the boat to row. Are you ready?!?
