My goal is to lose 30 lbs. and gain strength in my upper and lower body. I'm trying to cure my GERD and also to strengthen my legs and knees especially, but my arms too. I got stuck on the ground the other day while gardening and could hardly get back up. My arms are so weak that I have a hard time lifting my bike up to put it on the rack on the bus, and it's not a heavy bike.

I've just gotten very lazy and need to be more active and eat better.

As I get older I realize this isn't going to get easier. I am going to do this in 10 pound increments. That way it doesn't seem like such a challenge. I will gradually work up to at least 30 minutes of exercise 6 days a week as well.

I'm Vicki and I've been a member of sparkpeople off and on for the last 7-8 years. In that time I've managed to yo-yo myself up about 130 lbs. I'll lose some weight then get compliant and gain it back plus more. But now I'm starting to have health issues that wouldn't be as bad if I were at a smaller size.
I'm currently working to lose 45 lbs. Once I manage that, I'll see if I feel the need to go lower.

Hi Everyone. My name is Christi. I'm 56 years young and retired last year from my job as a correctional counselor in a medium security prison. For about a year I worked a part-time job, and now I have completely retired. I've been with Spark for a few years, but can't seem to get past a certain weight. Lately I've gotten way off track on my food. It's amazing what a diet soda and a candy bar can do to a person - weeks of cravings, headaches, fuzzy thinking, lack of sleep, achy joints and laziness. I've got to stop it while I'm still coherent enough to make that decision! Doc says I'm on the verge of becoming diabetic. My mom has suffered with diabetes for over 25 years - I want no part of that! I have to really take control of myself and lead a healthier lifestyle. I'm also struggling with the fact that my body can't do what it used to. It's a little depressing to realize I don't have the same stamina and flexibility. I find myself moving slower and resting more. Hopefully this has more to do with poor nutrition choices than age. I'm ready to make some changes!

Hi all! I have had difficulties with weight since my teens. I have been on diets losing and gaining back numerous times. I have been and still have the capacity to be a compulsive over eater. Over the years, I had many triggers for emotional eating: work, stress, divorce, etc. I have developed Type 2 diabetes, obesity, celiac disease, high blood pressure and other ailments. For 50 years I have been losing and regaining. Now is my time, while I still have some left, to take care of myself, eat mindfully and maybe alleviate some of my conditions. I am so willing!

I'm 59 today and next year I'll enter in my life's sixtieth decade.I need to lose 35 pounds but my first goal is to lose 15. I started Spark 6 days ago and this coming Monday I'll have my first weigh-in. It will be nice if my scale give me good news as a present! I heard there are many "girls" my age here! Hope to find some of you shortly to share experiences and advices through this journey of ours

I am 56 and have been struggling to lose weight since having my 4th child at 40. It feels like I've tried EVERYTHING under the sun with no results. I am a stress eater and have had more than my share of stress over the last 10 years. I have been declared a borderline diabetic with borderline high blood pressure and don't want it to go any further. Doctors have recommended the DASH Diet so I bought the book and have been studying it for a while. Now I am committed to changing my lifestyle so that I can have a better, healthier life down the road.

Decided it was time to leave the under 25 pounds to lose group and join this one. I have lost 26 pounds in my first 6 months with Spark People. I do not know how much weight I eventually want to lose as I am setting goals for a 5 to 8 pound loss intervals and will determine the following goal after I reach the current one.

I am a 63 year old woman, married over 41 years with 2 grown sons and live east of Cincinnati, Ohio. I've had lifelong issues with weight. I am diabetic and have heart disease. Last December, I had a double bypass. I joined SparkPeople initially to help me count calories. Little by little, I have explored everything SparkPeopke had to offer. My current goals are to change my lifestyle by eating better foods, exercising regularly, and reducing my chances of another heart attack. I am still learning to measure and control portions and to make better choices when eating away from home.

Hello, I see that I am not the only person who has been on sparks for a while. Years for me. Initially lost weight and then it stopped. Or I stopped. But at least I have been able to maintain.

But yesterday I found new resolve again, so i reset my goals and got added to this team. :-)

I am 63, live in Canada, and work full time in a library. I also was diagnosed with a serious heart condition - cardiomyopathy - 4 years ago. It is not a lifestyle heart issue. It is either genetic or was caused by a virus. There is no cure for it, but medications do help. I am lucky - so far I have very few symptoms caused by this. However the future is uncertain. And although weight does not cause it, I know that if I weighed less it would be less work for my heart to do. So I am newly determined.

Hi. I have been on Spark before but am starting fresh. I use a FitBit One and try to do 10,000 steps, but it is hard to get that high most days. I am a stay at home mom in a ranch house and I don't need to walk far for things, so I have to be purposeful about moving.
Cycling is my preferred choice of exercise during the summer.
I am almost 52 and losing weight has been a true struggle as I've gotten older. I am planning on reaching my goal weight by my 53rd birthday (October 2017). I saw a video of my husband and I dancing and it seems that is what I needed to get me going again---I was not impressed with how I looked!
A few years ago I was 40 pounds lighter but had personal struggles with keeping it off....I believe my head is in the game again and am focused and determined.

Hi, I am Debra and I set a goal in January (New Year's resolution) to lose 35 lbs with no date of accomplishment set. I am 65 and started out at 160 lbs. I am not at 136 lbs. and really have not tried to put any pressure on myself. If I want cake, I eat cake. I know myself well enough to be happy with each lb. gone and not try to look to far in the future. It is just easier for me.

Hi I am Char, I work nights in home care. have been a nurse for almost 40 years. I became a grandmother in December.
I have type 2 diabetes, and I struggle with my carbs. I like my snacks at work. I am trying to control my BS and my A1C. These have been going up slightly, so there has been a change in my meds.

I have lost weight in the past, so I know I can do it, but I got too comfortable with what I thought was correct portions and foods, and have slowly gained it back. Now is the time to buckle down and do it again.

Hi, I am Janette and I am 56 yrs old, I live in Escondido, CA. I joined SP and this team in 2013 at 170, I lost 30 lbs fast with strictly watching what I was eating and with lots of exercise, including training to run my first and only 5 K.

Unfortunately I kept getting more and more health issues popping up before and after running my 5 K. I found high impact stuff was causing a lot of issues for me so I had to stop running and doing a lot of other things I was doing before too.

I don't have a lot of support at home with this, my bf and his son love their sodas, candy, fast foods, chips and other junk food. Then don't want to eat health or to exercise. I was laid off for several yrs too, so money was tight for me before to buy myself healthy foods that the guys didn't want to buy or eat.

I started working several part time jobs and just slowly but surely let old eating habits creep back in. Now I am only working one part time job, but my lax ways have already let me put all the weight that I lost in 2013 back on. I had a Wii that I was using to weigh myself as we didn't own a scale anymore, and it decided to break this Monday, so I haven't weighed myself since then. At that point I was already back up to 170 again.

One of my health issues is that I was diagnosed with gallstones previous to starting SP. With losing the 30 lbs and all the exercise I did, I had it under control and got my liver and kidneys working good again. But now with putting that 30 lbs back I am getting a lot of indigestion and heart burn again. So I know I have to get strict with my eating again at least. I still do a lot of walking, and yoga like PT stretches, but I have got lax about other types of exercise, so I need to get back to that again.

I am back on Spark after a 2 year absence because bad habits have crept back into my lifestyle. I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis 18 months ago, and have used that as an excuse to gain 20 pounds. I haven't done any exercise in about 2 months, and feel completely miserable. The best success I've had has been through this sight and the team support, so I'm back to stay this time!!

I live with my husband on a farm in central MN, and have two college age sons. They are both going back to school in two weeks, and I'm just a bit overwhelmed. One will leave for a year in Scotland to get a graduates degree and the other will be playing hockey and going to school in Chicago!!

My goal is to lose the 20 pounds I've gain and re-establish a regular workout schedule.

Two things to change in your life. You will feel so much better without smoking.. The rewards will be a healthier happier you. Best of luck to you.When you lose the weight you will know you are a strong person and it will give you such a great feeling. Believe in yourself and make it happen.
I am also new and a bit confused about teams and where I should post. I will get better at it, I hope. I want to lose 33lbs. I lost 105lbs ten years ago and kept most of it off until recently I am 72 and some health problems have slowed me down and caused depression, but I won't give up or give in. I will lose the 25 I gained back plus 8 more. It may take a bit longer , I am in no hurry. If I lose one lb per week , that would be great.

My starting weight was 189. My goal is to get down to 150. I am now at 175. Summer is always easier. I am a teacher, and I am going back to school this week. My goal is to continue at least a 1 lb/week weight loss. Wish me luck!

My goal is to lose 25 pounds. I am experiencing a lot of pain due to arthritis in my knees which is keeping me from being as active as I would like. I'm hoping relief is in sight and I can start hittin' the gym!

My ultimate goal is to get down to 160. However, I'm not looking at that now, as it's a bit too overwheming to think about. I'm being short-sighted and am aiming at losing one pound per week. That sounds do-able to me. I'm all about baby steps this time (yes, I've been here before...) My motivation is different this time around: Before I just always wanted to look better and fit into my clothes in a better way. But now, I'm over 60 and I'm feeing more joint pain in my knees and know getting rid of excess weight would do wonders there. Plus these last several months, I've developed all the classic symptoms of GERD - and know again that this excess weight is a big contributor to that. So I'm ready to embrace Day 3 of this new (and I know it's not going to be easy) journey.

I am back again. I've gained a bit,although I've held within 5 lbs for 2 years. My doctor told me yesterday if I can lose the remaining 40 lbs I should be off all meds, except for the glaucoma drops. Now that is serious motivation for me. My goal for several years has been to get under 150. Now is the time.

Aloha. My name is Laurie and I am from Hawaii. My goal is to lose 25 pounds and get myself stronger both physically and spiritually. I am a single of mother of 2 beautiful young adult children. I will turn 52 this year. My weight has always been a barrier for me with things. Over the past 7 years I have gone from 243 all the way down to 145. My goal is to be healthy! And have peace with food, and with myself.

I am 51 and I have arthritis and plantar fasciitis. I hope these complaints will go away, or become less, if I weigh less. I also want to end my troubled relationship with food and have a consistent stable eating pattern.

The steps:
- stick to food plan
- be in bed on time
- exercise daily for at least 40 minutes
- meditate twice a day
- physio exercises 3-4 times per week

Hi I'm Brenda, I'm 55 years old. I think I weigh 170, well that's what it was the last time I got weighed at the doctors. I couldn't believe it. Cause I'm 4'11". I am short. I used to go to curves and I really loved it and I rode my bike to work everyday. Then I stopped going to curves, it was Halloween and ate so much candy. I was at 150 lbs. then. And I gained all of it back and more. I feel that I know I can do this again, but I don't want to pay it at some gym. I have my xbox dance music and I use Sparkpeople excercises and I think that will do it. I am hoping that it works. It's not that I want to loose all the weight, I want to be able to jump and pick something up without a problem. I have to bend down slowly when I want to pick up something. Anyhow I did great yesterday. I ate healthy and today I'm cleaning out all my clutter, that will be my workout for today. It's a lot of work so that will count. thanks for listening.

I joined Sparkpeople for me, to like myself again. I looked in the mirror and did not like what I saw. I am 64 yrs old and I looked like I was 9 months pregnant and this all happened because I lost my dad, mom, sister and brother all back to back. I turned to food for comfort. Then I was reminded by my son that I still had their families to stay healthy for and he was right. I couldn't survive without my grandchildren in my life. That was a wake up call and I answered the call.
I have already lost 1/2 of my goal and I feel great about myself and life. There is nothing better that stepping on that scale each week and watching the lbs roll off.

Hello,
I went to get my annual physical (way overdue) and really didn't like the number on the scale or the fact that some of my bloodwork was just beginning to enter a borderline range showing the impact on my health. I have lost 17 pounds since that day and am looking to lose around 30 more. It's really about health and energy levels for me. I have been watching my food intake, taking a Krav Maga class twice a week (hoping to increase to 3) and working my way through Couch to 5k running program. I am excited to continue this journey

After I left SP, I started on a very slippery slope: started eating more junk food, began to smoke marijuana every day (it's legal in CO) so I had the munchies every evening, began to enjoy my absinthe fountain and other cocktails in the evening, quit watching what I was eating, and got gloriously sedentary while I crocheted or knitted for One Nation Walking Together www.ravelry.com/groups/stitching-for

Guess what happened. I gained weight at an impressive rate, started having heartburn and esophageal spasms, developed sleep apnea, became deficient in several nutrients, got weaker muscles and had no energy, and brought my blood pressure to an all-time high of 225/121 at its worst.

I've started spurning the MJ and cocktails (except for rare celebrations), and quit eating junk food, and I lost 20 lbs! This success encouraged me to return to SP to get healthier. Oh, and my BP was 125/77 this morning! The doctor has taken me off of 2 medications.

I want to get stronger, not tire so easily, sleep better, and lose a whole bunch of weight! I lost 1 lb this week. Since most of my old SP friends are gone, I hope to make more so we can share encouragement and fun.

I am Erin. No one wants to hear a big ole' nasty sob story so I won't even go there. I need to lose 50 more pounds to save my own life. I have lost 102 already but it isn't enough. I need some major surgery that will involve losing a leg but I need to try to get the weight off and blood sugars down even lower if I stand any chance of recovery. We are remodeling the condo to make it handicap accessible - a costly and time consuming project. But, if it is not ready when the leg has to go, I will end up in a nursing home until things are ready at home. Enough said.
I hope to make many new friends along the way and will try to offer encouragement where I can.

I'm Pam - Just turned 50 - I had a picture taken of me a year ago that had me in tears. My bf's daughter-in-law was pregnant at the time, and I looked darned near as big if not way bigger! I was crushed. So i decided that I'd go low carb. I lost about 12 lbs, then had a hysterectomy and lost a total of 20. then the weight creeped back up and gained 10 back. That was the last straw. I went on a doctor supervised program & have lost 48-50 lbs (i go back and forth). I wanted to lose 50 by 50. I am going on another round of the diet starting next week and I am losing this weight to feel good about myself and improve my health. My joints ache less and my general health is MUCH better. Being responsible to log in everything I eat makes it much more disciplined. Thanks for the help, SparkPeople!!

Hi all! I'm Carol. I am 64 years old and could really stand to lose about 50 pounds. I joined SP in 2012, lost 20 pounds, fell off the SP "wagon" and regained it all plus about 10# more. I'm back and determined to stay with it this time! I have set a goal to lose 30# by this time next year, which is only 2.5# per month, so I think it is pretty realistic and attainable.

My reasons for wanting to lose weight:
1. To be healthier- to keep my blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol under control without meds
2. To have more energy, especially to be able to enjoy my grandkids!
3. To take some of the pressure off my arthritic knees
4. I'm just plain tired of lumbering around like an old bear! :)

I have a number of reasons for wanting/needing to lose weight. From March to November 2015 I did really well, losing 31 lbs. Then came the holidays and I slacked off way too much.Since 2016 began, I am having difficulty getting and staying back on track. I have put 6 lbs. back on.

Reasons to lose weight:
High Blood Pressure
Sleep Apnea
High Cholesterol
Diabetic
Lower back pain
Knee pain

My goal is to lose 70 lbs.

I do not like to exercise and have not been able to convince myself to get at it.

I'm with everyone else starting over. I joined back with sp a couple months ago and ive been getting back on track with exercise and eating right a couple months prior to that. I love feeling better and more energized.

I am currently doing the 21 day fix..both exercise and eating plan (love it)
I am doing a walk/jog program.... would love to learn to jog long distances.

I'm Vicki and I've been a member of sparkpeople off and on for the last 7-8 years. In that time I've managed to yo-yo myself up about 130 lbs. I'll lose some weight then get compliant and gain it back plus more. But now I'm starting to have health issues that wouldn't be as bad if I were at a smaller size.
I'm currently working to lose 45 lbs. Once I manage that, I'll see if I feel the need to go lower.

Hi all. I'm so glad I'm not the only one who has ta lipped a bit. Day 2 for me to get back on the road to healthy. I'm dealing with a torn meniscus and need hand surgery in April (when things fall apart, they do it in bulk, it seems). I aim to lose 20 or so in the next few months and 40 by the end of the year. We will be on vacation for a bunch of that time so focusing on healthy food is my new mantra.

Hi, I'm Patty, 53, and after gaining back all the weight I had lost a few years ago I'm back to the starting point of losing 40-45 pounds. I went back to my old ways of eating and lack of exercise and now I feel heavy and have no energy. I'm Milana, 53yrs old and have 30lbs to lose...AGAIN! I'm married (for better or worse) 34yrs. I'm an empty nester mother of 4 and a gramma to 4 boys. I've been part of SP since 2007,and have served as co-leader on several teams. Over the past yr and half, I've been more or less out of control and have cast all my previous hard efforts into the wind! Nothing in my closet fits me the way it's supposed to. My self esteem is at a low right now. I'm just in a funk and can't seem to get out. I need to get back to a healthier lifestyle so I can enjoy life! I know that it's up to me to find motivation and stay dedicated but everyone can use help and support and accountability! I'm ready for something new and ready to contribute to the team.

Hello, so nice to meet you. I just joined yesterday. Sounds like we have similar health issues . I to have hypothyroidism. I have 5 children , two are married. Three still at home. Two finished with college. One working the other looking for work. Wish I was not having to cook every night but, that's ok. I want to lose 50 pounds I have lost 13 so far but it has slowed way down. I think you are wise to brake it down into smaller goals. I think I will try that as well. Wishing you all the best.

Joined Sparkpeople just over a week ago, and I have dropped a few lbs. Weight loss in the first week makes this 50 something jump for joy. I am a happily married mother of three, who suffers with hypo-thyroidism. Joining SP is my start to better health and hopefully a smaller waist. My husband and I are first time empty nesters. So the question, "What's for dinner?" Is no longer an issue. I have more weight to loose than most of you in this forum, but asked to join because of age. My BIG goal is to loose 60 lbs. I expect this to be a slow and steady race; I have set 6 individual goals of 10lbs each. I am in it for a long haul. I would like to develop healthy eating habits and an enjoyable exercise program prior to our children returning for summer. Hoping SP will help keep me on track, and I look forward to making new friends. I can do this, right?

Hi my name is Jackie. I am 56 and I have suffered with MS for 34 yrs. I can no longer walk and I also have spinal stenosis. Not saying any of this to complain, just to stating my struggle. I want to loose 20lbs. I have started to do minimal excercises. I want that to continue slowly. So I have joined SP. I am hopeful for the weight loss but also for relationships to be built. I love Jesus and He is my hope and strength. and I have felt directed to be here.

Have some minor health set backs, has made me realize just how far I had let my bad habits control my life. I am getting the control back, slowly but surely. And in doing so, hope to get my health back too. And of course losing some weight is a great side effect. Hoping for a 50lb side effect! emoticon

I just feel better when I can move better.. This chunkiness has to go..I lost 25 lbs but as soon as I went on a car trip I decided not to eat smart at EVERY meal, so I am back to lugging the weight around. Goal is to just eat smarter portions and smarter choices and the weight will come off as before

Hi..I am 57. I got up to 262lbs after having 2 back surgeries.Dr said every extra lb is 12 lbs on my spine. So in May 2012, I gave up all soda, changed eating habits and lost 60+ lbs. I was stuck at 200 for 9 months. 139 is lowest. But short goal 175lbs

Hi all -- I'm 58 and need to focus on getting fit again. At my heaviest, i was 213 and lost 65 pounds over about 6 years -- kept it off for a number of years, then life threw me a few curve balls and i've gained about 35 of it back. Time to turn it around. : )

Why do i want to lose weight? I simply feel better at an optimum weight instead of being overweight... it's easier to do all the things i love like gardening, biking, golfing, on and on...

Hi Everyone! I'm almost 59. I'm hypothyroid and I also have an autoimmune disease: oral lichen planis which prevents me from eating a bunch of things. some fruits and vegetables trigger blisters in my mouth. stress does. vinegars, oj, mint. So i can be, at times pretty restricted. However, I'm no quitter. I'll keep at this. :)

I need to make a new start this year and not use food to cope with daily life and life events. Referred by nurse practitioner to research program. It gave me the kick I needed to get restarted.I believe most illnesses are preventable, and I don't want to end up with chronic illnesses that I could have avoided. I got a "little big" over the last year, lots of stress and family issues. I've lost 7 pounds since I started on 10/31, 27 days. Some days are easier than others...

It's great to read all the posts and "meet" you all. I can relate all too well to medical and family issues. I've gained and lost weight a few times also. I'll be 60 next month and I'm working to make this the last major weight loss of my life. I'm really tired of being fat and unhealthy.

The good thing is that every day I'm doing something to get healthier. Yesterday it was making lemonade with stevia instead of sugar. Today, who knows? I'll probably pick up a great idea from one of you here on Spark. So glad we are all here, to share our journey!

I am new to this team, but not really new to Sparkpeople. This is my 3rd time joining and over the years since I first joined, I have found SP to be very helpful in fulfilling my goals. I recently had knee replacement surgery and have just started back to work and am now ready to pick up where I left off when I left.
My goal is to get back into my healthy lifestyle. To show my grandkids that Nanna plans to be around for many years (Lord willing) and that eating healthy and daily exercise is very important to accomplishing that. I am very involved in their lives and enjoy their dance classes/recitals, baseball practices/games, and more recent Hockey practices/games/tournaments.
So today is the start of the NEW me, and I know I will be able to accomplish my goal to lose the weight I wish to lose.

Hi, I am 66 years old and have maybe 4 or 5 "good disc" in my back. I had both knees replaced in 2009. When I joined in 2013 I had lost down to 176 but had my gall bladder removed in April of 2014. It seems since it was removed everything I eat gives me heart burn. Heck, even water gives me heart burn (laughing). I weighed 193 this morning. In June I thought I might have a blood clot in my leg. Ruling that out, it took me two more weeks to see an orthopedic doctor. I had fractured my left leg. I finally got out of the boot the end of September. I just started going to a pain clinic since the uneven gait has made my back pain worse than ever. Wow, I sound like a whiner. I don't know about the rest of you, but it is just about impossible to exercise. It is hard to lose weight when you live with someone. It seems my dear Mama wants to see me eat and have seconds. I am still her baby (sigh). I normally try to do the cooking but I am working on rearranging the third bedroom that has been used primarily for storage. I wonder how many of you have health problems that limit exercise--I have osteoporosis and walking is bad for me, believe it or not. My doctor said I could sneeze and break my back. Real encouraging, right? Anyway, I would like to have a couple of friends to help me in my quest to lose weight. Thanks.

Hello! The last time i replied to this message was back in March. Since then i have been up and down in weight and am now determined to actually START AND FINISH during 2015! I have tried some other programs to motivate me and had some success but i am still above where i want to be. I have lost 7 pounds since march but want to be under 170 by the new year. I have joined a gym and so i am feeling more toned as i lose weight. Here's to fresh starts and meeting goals!!
ps. i am 57

This is not about the sprint, it is the start of life long healthy living!

I had lost 40lbs. Was finally comfortable in my own body and have gained back 30 of them. I am so sick of the up and down. No more starvation diets, no more "packaged" foods. I know if I just last 3 weeks being reasonable I will find my way back down. 4 days in, 17 left.
They say 21 days makes a habit. I hope they're right.
