Gluten Free is such a hot topic these days. Surely, you will find a source for making your menus. I'd try the local library to start with, and the internet resources, too. Once you learn what has gluten you can avoid it. Just thought of something...I had a book called "Lose the Wheat....something by Rodale Publishing. It had a lot of GF recipes.

SP menus are not GF friendly. I sure wish they were! I need guidelines of what to put on my menus. My neighbor said to just eat lots of veggies and fruit! And limit everything else.. Lol not much help to me.. I will get it figured out though!

Hi Nola,

It sounds like you have it under control. Making menus is a good idea, particularly when you are limited to gluten-free foods. SparkPeople makes it easy. I usually put in what I plan to eat ahead in the Nutrition Tracker, and then I can see how much I plan to eat--calories, carbs, protein and fat (and I track fiber). Then I can make adjustments as I need to. I haven't tried SparkPeople's menu planner, but that might be the way to go, too.

Anyway, go girl! You're on the right track.

Best wishes,

Patti emoticon

Hi Patty! I am really excited about this change of diet. When I weighed in this morning I was down another pound. I think I have the hang of the GF diet...at least I think I do! I will be using what I remember of the WW menus just to guide me, but make everything GF. It's been a long time since I weighed and measured my foods. LOL I did okay today. I'm taking it one day at a time. Still don't have the menus made out for the week, but I'll get there... Thanks for your encouragement... Looking forward to my weigh in on Friday or Saturday. There is so much information on this site. I'm in awe! Have a Great Week!!

Hi Nola,

I know the feeling. It can be done, though....SparkPeople has really helped me. I work hard to get those SparkPoints above 100 every day. I find it can be done, too, by entering my food and exercise, getting bonus points from the teams and from SparkPeople's incentives. It's fun to see what the wheel will bring. Anyway, Those pounds have come off slowly but surely, and now I'm only 4 pounds from my goal. Maybe I won't make it by my birthday on August 7, but I'll be close!

I have been told to start a Gluten Free Diet..no wheat, rye or barley. I am looking forward to the tons of support and challenges this site has to offer. When I hit the scales at 170.4 in March, I was in shock! I knew then I had to do something. Then I was told to change my diet. I found this site Friday the 18th. I decided to start Monday and would devote this weekend to getting some GF foods and setting up a menu. I have belonged to WW for many, many years, but I just can't seem to get into it! I started the Plexus and lost 10 pounds the first couple of weeks and have plateaued... Now I will be working hard on exercising and learning a new diet. I am thankful for all the support on this site!

There is a winner in all of us! Bring it on!!!

For me, it came as a shock that I had tipped the scales at more than 160 pounds. I was being monitored for blood pressure and weight due to a medicine I was taking. When I weighed in, I couldn't believe that my body fat was into the obese category. That was over 2 years ago now. I got off that medication and started with SparkPeople. My weightloss didn't take off right away though. It's just since I've had a Personal Trainer and gotten serious about tracking my food intake and doing my exercise that I've seen the weight come off. Now I'm down to what my weight was in 1989 when I got married. The energy has come back, too, and I can look at maintaining the new weight in the future.

Hi, I am a big person. I'm five foot ten inches tall and weigh 239. I have size twelve feet and the rest of me is in proportion to that so I'll never be a slim Jim. I have a roll around my midriff and lots of belly fat. I exercise by going to the gym and doing the elliptical then weights then back to the elliptical or I go swimming, or I go on a four mile walk. I do something five days out of the week. I follow the nutrition counter diligently. I've weighed 239 for several months now but propel say I look smaller and more trim and how much weight have I lost. Should I accept it that people think I'm smaller or should I be discouraged because I haven't lost a pound.

I want to loose some weight to be healthier than I have been for a few years. I am a Type 1 diabetic with an A1C of 13.8. I quit taking my insulin a few years ago to loose the weight but I'm starting to have lots of problems (ie...memory problems, hair loss, balance etc...). It's not a good way to loose weight but it's what worked for me. Now, I am back on my insulin and trying to keep my weight down. It's not easy. I have gained 16 lbs in two months. I need help.

My primary goal is to live as vibrantly and free as possible. Other goals are:

1) to be a good role model of self care (I'm a case manager for homeless and at-risk youth)

2) to be able to be a fitness partner with my kids, continue to hike, bike, adventure with them and my grandkids (none yet) into my old age

3) to feel and look great

4) specific goals such as "do another marathon" "hike Pioneer's peak" etc.

I have a great memory of Minnesota. In 1972 went there to go fishing. Stayed somewhere that had log cabins. I had a guide for a fishing day and what we caught in the morning he cleaned and cooked for breakfast. The best breakfast ever!!! I caught northern and waleye. The scenery was beautiful. Wow! what a great memory. emoticon

Many reasons for wanting to loose the weight. #1 is to be healthy. I turned 50 in February and in May I found out I have gall stones. Ugh emoticon . I have found in the last year that I can control the blood pressure by walking on the treadmill. Now looking to lower the cholesterol. have no desire to spend the rest of my life on those meds. None of these things were an issue 10 years ago. emoticon

Wow! You have already lost quite a few pounds. APPLAUSE! You will find what type of exercise works for you. Leave the guilt, and the shoulds, and give yourself the freedom to just play. Turn on your favorite music, and shake your booty! Go to a park and see if you remember how to swing. Just move. You are already doing a great job, just keep it up!

I'm with you regarding motivation to exercise. I see the info on SP but one sits to watch. Some have ten minutes to work out and I feel "Oh, not right now."
If you want some one to help keep you accountable to work off the love handles, then you can help me be accountable to work off the love rolls. emoticon
I just turned 62 and have a daughter getting married in August. That alone should motivate me but doesn't. I'm happy she's getting married.
Just sparkmail me and we can go for the slim. emoticon

I'll be 64 at the end of the summer and don't want to have this extra weight on me. I started in April and am half way to goal. I want to be healthier, feel healthier and look healthier.

I'll be retiring in several years and I want to develop some long lasting healthy habits.

The support at SP is the best, The challenges are great.

I do though, need motivation for exercising - a lot of motivation.

Hi everyone!
My reasons for wanting to get in shape and to my healthiest weight is for my kids and grandkids. I want to participate in the fun, and not shy away because I feel "fat" or I'm too tired!! My grandkids are my top priority, and if I can't keep up with them, I'm missing so much, and especially missing out on those precious memories that make life such a treasure. Besides, I want to live as long as I can and enjoy my life! I also want to see my great-grandchildren and be a force in their lives as well. Long-term goals. ;)

My reasons for wanting to lose weight are many, but the main ones are to be fit and healthy, to live longer, to be free of medication, and to be a role model for others in my age range that it is possible to lose the weight and keep it off.

"Stay focused, prayerful, determined, motivated and you will become successful."

"Keep the Faith and Lose the Pounds!"

I am also hopping back on the weigh loss band wagon for the 100th time. I am taking it much more seriously this time because at my last physical I was told that I had high cholesterol! My mother passed away when I was 22 from heart problems and she didn't eat right and take care of herself. I don't want to leave my family any time soon so I need to start eating right, lose approximately 35 pounds and get healthy. I know it's going to be hard but I must do it for myself and my family.

I started on this journey for the 100th time in my life to lose again 38 lbs. Two years ago I was at my healthy weight. But I ended up with physical ailments with no diagnosis from several doctors. Being in pain for six months then I get a cure and then my shoulder was in pain and I would not see a professional until 7/14. On pain pills since spring of 2012 and now in the fall more pain pills just added pounds. Dec. 26, 2012 I ended up in hospital for chest pain which turned out to be anxiety. Complained about 7/14 appointment to doc. for shoulder ailment. Well, stress relief was the prescription this time and got a 1/13 appointment for shoulder. Had a broken bone in shoulder which is very small but rubs together that causes the pain. Instead of surgery I decided on a cortisone shot. Wow! Relief. Then I went into depression and I don't care attitude. The pounds went on and clothes got small which fed into my depression.
Enough! I have turned 62 and my baby girl 40 yrs. of age is getting married for the first time to a man that also has never been married. My grandson, her son, will be walking her down the aisle in August.
But being 38 lbs. lighter is not for her wedding. It's for me. the museum in Portland. OR will open a time capsule after 50 yrs. for the submariners who worked on the submarine, The Blueback. I'm in that capsule and will be 92. This is my goal. It gives me goose bumps at the thought.
So this is my story and I look forward to the help I will get and give for the last livett (I don't diet because I'm not dying. I'm living so it's a livett.) of my life.

Building my bucket list and enjoying the ones I've accomplished!!! I quit smoking and have visited 34 out of 50 states. But I want to see the grand canyon.

I used to be fit and slim. Then I married an idiot, then I turned 40 and its been a battle ever since. I'm reasonably fit and losing the weight, 5:2 rocks but need to tone up big time.

What the heck has happened to my arms. They were OK at 49 and then I turned 50 in March and they have gone wobbly and funny looking. Most distressing. I am doing a bit of work with weights to sort that out. Having said that, I'd better go and buy some new ones as the old ones got lost when we moved house last year and I'm using jars of sauce to do my strength work, which is fine unless I drop one.

I know that I'm never going to be the tri-athlete that I once was, and 25 and gorgeous again but fitter and not too hideous will do me just fine.

Blessed are the cracked for it is those who let in the light.

If I don't lose some weight, I face a future filled with diabetes, joint pain and heart disease. Taking healthy steps now will help prevent those things + give me a future filled with energy, enthusiasm and good times with my family. Bring it on!

My goals seem pretty simple. I have a big show coming up in September and I want to look good. I'm tired of being on stage wondering if I'm sitting at the right angle, and choosing what to wear that hides this or that. And my arms .... lord. I want stronger looking arms. What happens to your arms once you turn 50?!?!

But more than that I want to keep the weight off. I'm tired of yo-yo-ing. I'm tired of blossoming in the winter. I'm tired of letting everything go when life gets really hectic. So my real goal is to lose the 30lbs and keep it off until September 2015.

I'm with Hornowl. I want to lose weight for my health, number 1, and then to look good for my husband. We're older now, but that doesn't mean we have to have old bodies!

I want to be fit and healthy, as well as being a good role model for my granddaughter! I am at the goal weight my doctor and I set 8 years ago, but he has suggested that losing a bit more would help my arthritic knees. I'm ready to do this, as I love to run and running hurts right now!

So many reasons for wanting to lose weight.
At 50 now, I am realizing that the extra weight is becoming more and more of a health threat as I age.
I also hate my body image right now. I used to be athletic and strong and want to get that back - not be skinny, but be proud of my muscles and be able to work out more easily again.
Also, I am not a great role model for my children. I don't want their vision of their mother to be an overweight, sedentary person who is trying to diet all the time.
There are many more reasons, but these are the most compelling for me.

I would like to fit into my wardrobe of sizes 8 and 10. Now I'm 14 and had to buy things comfortable to wear. I also want to get my motivation back. I believe once I see progress on weight loss I will get a bit more motivation.

I have been on and off with spark since 2009. I have gained, lost, gained, lost... I quit smoking almost 2 years ago (I had developed asthma), and started menopause at the same time. Devastating life experiences had happened prior to the former and needless to say I just kinda gave up and gained w/o losing. It is time to get back to my goal of losing so I feel well enough to enjoy the outdoors with my husband and grandsons. I have lost 14 pounds prior to rejoining spark, and now for the remainder 49!! Another goal is going to be learning to be selfish with my time, I have a very hard time saying "no" and need to start. At this point in my life I feel my husband and I need to spend more time together so that is another goal.

Hi. I'm joining Sparkpeople because I can't seem to change on my own. I'm 57 and have gained and lost the same 20-30 lbs over the last 20 years. I'm approaching retirement and want to be able to enjoy this chapter in my life. My goal is to lose 30 lbs by the time I go on a 2015 trip to the Galapagos Islands-so that I can keep up with all the things there will be to do. I work alot and finding time for exercise and planning meals is my challenge. I walk regularly but not frequently enough. I am inspired by the posts I have read so far and look forward to getting to know some of you better.

Ahhhh, sweet Monday morning, a chance to start over again. Feeling thankful/relieved Easter is over. Sent extra food incl a lot of bread home with DS yesterday. DS says he's going to lose weight too so hopefully he'll stay true to his word until I at least get enough weight off to be really motivated to stay true in the middle of that yellow brick road with the treasure chest of goal weight at the end of it.

Also thankful spring finally seems to be here. Nice to just walk w/o fear of slipping on the ice. Have pledged 30 min. exercise/day. Am also going to try ... (delete "try" because that's expecting I won't succeed); am going to avoid eating bread with exception of homemade very high fibre muffin for 4pm coffee break. High 5's if I can eliminate that too; going to try replacing it with almonds and dried cranberries.

Anyone else struggling with bread or other food addictions?

Sounds cliche' but truly, today is the first day of this new journey.

Lynn
p.s. I'm doing this on my tablet and haven't really mastered opening a 2nd window etc so sorry for not doing personal replies. Will as soon as we get our tower back.

I really enjoy Spark People so many are in the same boat - I really blew it today and made homemade pizza and crust probably over my whole days limit but it was good and I walk and exercise about 8 hours a week at step dancing.
Not sure if you have a pedometer or not but this one from Spark People works like a champ - if you have computer access just put the dongle in the port and when you walk/move all day it will tell you how many steps you took. I go to my computer after walking and step dancing and am amazed at how many steps I took. Was addicted to food could never get enough of it and just kept eating what ever I wanted to now that I walk and move I don't care if I eat or not.
I Love meat could care less about the carbs in bread, candy or sweets and trying to get more veggies and fruit in me. Everyone tells me I look good and lost a lot of weight - no weight just inches and can't find my cloth tape measure.
Phyllis I bet you walk a lot at work more than you realize during the day - after you eat lunch walk up and down the halls a few times. I did that while I was working in MN and a lot of days it was 40 below 0 but I walked around my office and down the halls anything to move.
We bought a house here in AZ and I can walk till my hearts content outdoor and don't have to worry about the cold and snow - just snakes - have a great Easter and God Bless

I am in the same boat as you, and told I am pre diabetic so I have to see a nutritionist next month. I have lost weight on weight watchers many times, but I love bread and dairy and especially sweets, and am not big on veggies or exercising. We had a rough winter in Boston and I know many people who have gained. So now I have to change my habits for good!
I'm in my mid 50s and i WORK at an elderly housing community, so I do worry about agingand how to get in better shape. It's funny because everyone thinks I'm younger than I am but i feel older!
I will check out your Pinterest page.

Hello to everyone I am a new to all of this or at least I just signed up end of March or first part of April - got to lose weight am about 60 lbs over weight. I had surgery last Nov. on 3 hammer toes and could not walk and gained back fat and kept eating and eating and eating. I was doing Zumba and started line dancing well my toes hurt too much and had to quit Zumba - in Feb. I had to have my screws removed because they were coming out - my body was rejecting them. I also fell cracked 2 ribs had to quit walking - after my rigs healed I started back line dancing and rejoined Zumba in April. Well I was not getting any where with my weight so I ordered the SP pedometer and LOVE IT!!! I walk almost 10,000 steps a day that includes line dancing which I now do 4 times a week. I feel great and hopefully will lose all this fat I have gained all these years. I am 64 and think doing pretty good but have to get motivated and that is why I am here!!!
PS I tried Belviq and it was NOT for me - did weird things to me BUT I was not hungry which is the point of it - was very expensive and I just have to get off the eating roller coaster and relearn nutrition - can't afford the organic fruits and veggies but trying to eat the other ones and hopefully get off the eating roller coaster

That's great!
I pulled some rib muscles and am unable to do much of anything for a bit. A little disappointed but I'll get back into the swing of things again, soon. My motivation was high so hopefully it will remain when I can exercise regularly after I heal.

Started out on Nutrisystem but had allergies to their foods. A good friend recommended Spark People and now instead of gaining on Nutrisystem I have lost what I gained on their plan and am back to my original starting weight. Like Spark People much better!

Here to try and stay motivated... I have lost count how many time I have started and then kaiboshed my self with my love of food. Even though we eat mostly healthy most of the time I have and incurable love of sweets. I am going to try and work on portion control mostly to start and to get the water back in the changes I am making

I am learning my way around this team posting thing and hope to do better! emoticon I feed the birds and told my husband that I felt like I was carrying around a 50 pound bag of bird seed everywhere I go and like many others have said, I am tired of it. I usually stay motivated to lose weight, but then I go back to the same old eating habits and regain. Definition of “insanity emoticon . So this time I am going to do my best to learn more about portion control and get involved with a group of people instead of going it alone. Hopefully it will make me more accountable and motivated if I can remember that 50 pound bag of bird seed everyday. My goal like others is to try for the first 30 pounds, then work on the last 20. But first things first. Thanks you’ll for being here!

Hi Everyone! I'm new to this forum. I've been on SparkPeople for 2 months yet feel the need to connect to others who are on the same path. I'm 62 and have been thin most of my life. The 2 times I have been heavy have occurred after starting a new medication. So this being the second time I am older and less active. I was 20 years younger the first time. I have been tracking my food and drinking my water as I need to do. It's the exercise part that I struggle with doing. Motivation is lacking most days. My niece's wedding is next month and I want to lose some weight by then. I am looking at next Christmas at being at my target weight. I know I can do it but not if I don't push myself to walk, walk, and walk.

Hi. I'm 52. 2 years ago I went hiking with women who were 10 and 20 years younger than me, respectively. They couldn't keep up. One had a knee injury and one had a foot injury and I was so smug that I kept having to wait for them. Well guess what? I gained 15 lbs on top of the 20 I always wanted to lose, and got a stress fracture in my foot trying to return to my regular walking program, simply because I'm now so heavy. My body doesn't want to do what it used to do now that it has this extra weight on it. When it started to heal, I tried again and REINJURED IT!!! Now I know: I have to take it slow, and get this weight off once and for all, and make exercising part of my life, not just to "get in shape." It's true: USE it or LOSE it!

I'm tired of it. Tired of being heavy, tired of being out of shape, tired of trying to squeeze into jeans that fit fine a year ago. I have regained the 25 pounds I had lost and I really have no excuse except that I like to overindulge in wine and dairy products and I have a hard time saying "no" to good European breads, even though my body reacts to wheat.

I'm also embarrassed to be seen next to my daughter, who works out every day.

Besides, I'm in my mid-50s and if I don't get healthy now, I may end up in a nursing home when I'm older. And who wants that?

My goal is to go from 172 to 142, which puts me into a healthy BMI. Then I'll change my goal to lose another 20 pounds or so. But it's not just about losing weight. I'm working on building my muscle so I can look better in a swimsuit. Hey, why not?

I'd like to join this group . . . need to own up to actually needing to lose more than ten or fifteen pounds.

Over the past ten years I've gained 30#. Feel like I'm playing Russian roulette with life/health because relatives on both sides have had strokes. Struggling to stay motivated as I've been trying to budge off this all-high high plateau for a year. A pound a week would have me at 1st goal of losing 30# by Christmas, then I'll work on the next ten!
Have some fun physical events planned for this year.

Did 60 min. 'walking aerobics' this morning and joints aren't feeling too bad.

Since turning 40 I've slowly gained about 40 pounds. I stopped exercising due to an injury.

about 8 years ago i started trying to lose the weight - WW, ediets, myfitnesspal, many many more. I've lost and gained and lost and gained but never have lost the entire 40 pounds I've gained.

I'm now just disgusted with my lack of motivation and thought I would start over. Searching the internet I found this site! I think this one talks to me more than the others.

Here's to a new me and letting this be the last time I try. I feel success

4/7/14 I can do this

HI, I am 70 plus. I want to lose about 30 pounds. I lost 20 pounds a year ago with spark people but have not been able to go all the way to goal. I am back giving it a go again. I am trying to lay down expectations that I will lose like I did in my forties. I know it will take longer .One thing I am going to do to help is to not weigh every day. Maybe once a week or less. Does anyone else have trouble with the scale. If so how do conquer the emotions it brings, failure or success does not mean what the scale says but I have trouble not giving it the power.

Hi,
I am a Grama of six, married and Mom of four. I am returning to Sparks after being away from the site for three years. My hubs retired and we moved cross country back to our home state of California. Needless to say I really put on the pounds living in the South.
Now that we are settled I am looking forward to getting back on track and finally lose this weight for good.

I am excited and looking forward to everyones encouragement and advise.

Hi my name is Carole, 72 yrs old and I live in Florida. I am a 5 yr Breast Cancer survivor and in Oct I had a heart attack and surgery. I thought it is about time I get heathly. I just finished 36 sessions of cardiac rehab, and I want to keep the exercise going. My husband has a terrible back and needs to lose more than I do so I thought if I can keep motivated I would be able to help him. Besides I do the cooking so he has to go along with me. I love to quilt and help other people with their quilting, as much as I can.

MRSCLARK, yes I also have a problem with binge eating. For that reason, I cannot keep trigger foods in my house-sweets is the worst for me followed closely by chips and pretzels. I am working on replacing these problem foods with healthy options that resemble the trigger foods. Fruit for the sugar, celery for the chips. I know this won't be easy at first, but know from previous experience it will become habit and I cannot ever go back to being lazy about my food choices if I am to become healthier.

Hi, my nickname is Yo and like the majority of Spark members I have tried multiple diets in hopes of losing weight. I have been on two programs that were successful for me-Medifast (deprevation) and Ediets. Ediets is identical to Spark People, but rather pricey now. The reason Ediets was successful for me was the peer support, which is why I chose Spark people. I know that with the help of our group we can all help each other be successful. I look forward to contributing to our team. There truly is strength in numbers!

I am back to SPARKing again! I have been a member since 2009 but for the last three weeks I have been really working on exercising and watching what I eat again. My husband and i joined a Healthe program at my work to get a discount on our health insurance and what a wake up call! Nothing like measuring your BMI, percentage of body fat to get you motivated!!!

WE can do this!!! Lets shake it and not break it!!! emoticon

I came to SparkPeople in a last ditch effort to lose weight after months/years of struggling. My goal is to lose about 30 pounds. I have hypothyroidism and have been diagnosed with a fatty liver. Because of these issues, losing weight is almost impossible. I have recently been able to lose weight by eating a fairly strict Paleo diet. I want to be healthier and I value my liver so losing weight is a must. Of course, I want to look good again too. I am hoping SparkPeople can help.

Can so relate to this................... I've tried WW and for me - just didn't work, and it adds up to be a lot of money for something that's not working properly. It's so hard to shed that weight now that I'm almost 52 - but.................. with everyone's help, dedication and this site - I know we can all try and do this together. Just getting back to Sparks.......... So much info to read

I'm new to Spark. The reason I joined is by accident actually. I have done Atkins and WW and lost 35-40 lbs each time. Now I'm back up and can't stand to look at myself w/o a shirt on - even when changing into my pj's. It's worse in the dressing room! I'm like "Who has a body that looks like this?" My lab work came back last week and now I have high cholesterol. I have been having mysterious traveling health issues for the past several months and I'm thinking it's got to me my weight and lack of activity. Since my parents are sick and I'm their care taker, I just haven't been taking care of myself like I used to. Now I'm having digestion issues as well and was in the ER a couple of weeks ago thinking it was a gall bladder attack; however, all my labs showed that it wasn't. So I am going to lose 40 pounds by diet and exercise and see if my health improves. I am 55 now, so it's a lot harder than when I was younger, but I am determined to do it and KEEP it off this time.
To summarize emoticon , I am losing weight for health reasons mostly, but also b/c I like to look good in my clothes!

I'm back with sparkpeople after a hiatus because I just keep getting heavier, no matter what I do! I can't seem to stick with anything because I get frustrated. I can't afford to go to WW. I figure I'll try spark people again (did it years ago) to see if I can make myself accountable. I need to lose about 40 pounds but even a half a pound is sooo hard! I just don't want to get bigger and bigger and bigger and end up so fat I can't move!

Let's do this!

My goal is to lose 5 pounds at a time. To get this one number to a healthy number as all my other health numbers are in a healthy range.
The reason to lose weight is to be able to have a healthy weight.
