Wow! I dont feel alone anymore. Just read the posts and think this is a great group! My goals are to start exercising again and keep monitoring what I eat. If I log my diet I keep pretty well on track. So now I just have to get out of this sedentary rut. My goal is to lose 25 pounds.

IL2L2BG and Kathy: Welcome (back) to Spark People and to this team! I think so many of us are in this same boat, having lost, not having the dedication to keep it off, gaining the weight back, and now starting anew. I've certainly been there. We're all in this together - and we can all do it this time!! It certainly does help me to know that there are others who understand the battle. Let's make everyday a "Day 1" with the excitement of a new day where we can make the changes that will make the difference this time!! emoticon

Hi everyone
I am an off and on member of SP. The program is great, I have lost a good amount of weight in the past but I am just not consistant enough to keep the weight off. My goal is to lose at least 50 lbs. I have high blood sugar now and I just had to get a pacemaker emoticon . I am really bummed about that. Still have 3 more weeks until I am able to lift my left arm to wash my hair. I just joined a challenge at my gym and I want to boost it with SP to keep me on track, accountability and most of all SUPPORT. I am not on sugar medicine at this time and I do NOT want to be. I was on sugar medicine and I think that is what damaged my heart, so my goal is to lose the weight so that there is no chance for me to be on medicine for diabetes. I am 52 years old, married 28 of those years, a 21year old son and a 3 week new heart. I work at a middle/high school for special needs so I am pretty active. I am ready to lose.

Hi I am new to Sparkpeople, I joined to drop the extra pounds I am sick of carrying around. I am midlife and I want my life to be free of high blood pressure and aches and pains. I am a positive person and want to be encouraged and want to encourage others in this lifestyle change. I love the educational articles and exercise videos. If I can learn it, I can do it. When I started I didn't even know what a plank was. So far I have seen the results. I dropped 10 pounds. At first I read the articles to get my points. Now I can see how they change the way I think and give me information I need to succeed. Today I am happy. When I reach my next goal I will be happier. emoticon

Oh, I like how you said that, EWOBLU! Sounds like a good mantra to me:
"Embracing my reality to change it!"
It's nice to know someone understands!! Thanks a whole bunch for replying, I was feeling kind of discouraged, but you've helped! It definitely all starts with being honest with ourselves, doesn't it? And change is possible!!

I know what you mean... I did the math yesterday and it said BMI 30 which is official obese and a heart risk. That is MY reality. I decided I had to embrace it to change it! It is Not Me... It is a condition of me...

Long term goal is to lose 45 pounds. Short term goal is to lose 15 by end of April. Why? Because I get so tired of seeing pictures of myself and realize how I've continued to lie to myself saying that I'm not that overweight, that the charts don't really take into account my (whatever). My knees hurt because of degeneration... not really, they hurt because I'm carrying too much weight. I'm tired of lying to myself saying that I don't really eat that much.. uh, yeah, I DO eat that much, and too much of it is unhealthy eating. I get lots of exercise in my regular lifestyle... Yes I do get more than some, but what about the hours I can spend zoning out in front of the computer? I'm tired of lying to myself - How's that for a reason to lose weight??

I am more new than not. Learning to make a better living strategy. I want to reclaim a decent level of fitness. I want to be able to run 5K races. I have decided that post menopause, genetically disposed, and culturally enabled... If I don't become active, I'll be overweight forever! I also think in good conscience, I can't lead my daughter down an unhealthy road. I want to set a good example. I want to feel alive and ready for adventure!

Hi group! I am back on this site again...tried Medical weight loss but did not loose much but money. Ugh. I hope to learn lifestyle changes that will get me to my goal. I want to be healthier. I have high cholesterol and my blood pressure and sugar is boarder line high so that is not good for the long run. I have 3 grand children that I want to be able to to see grow up and I am afraid that if I don't take control of my health I will risk loosing that opportunity. Thanks for listening!

I see you have already lost 17 pounds! Congratulations! My main goal for being a part of Spark People is to improve my health. I have tried to lose weight on my own for years with no success. Logging my diet and exercise is making me really think about my food choices and exercises. Great program!

My short term goal is to be able to dance again. I want to lose 36 pounds by 9/2015. So far I haven't lost anything, I've gained. I don't think I am measuring correctly. I am going to get better measuring equipment and keep trying. I have been on spark before but if I gained I would get discouraged and quit. I am determined to continue this time.

Life is all about choices and I choose to make good ones.

Goal: To lose 45 pounds

Reasons: To improve my self-respect
To (being truthful) look better, I guess that would be called pride
To be the person God created me to be - excess weight definitely gets in the road of that.

First, let me say how sorry I am for your loss.

Welcome (or welcome back) and congrats on taking this first step in your journey to health! I'm down about 14 pounds since I started SP, and the changes have been great for my spirit and my well-being. I'm sure you'll find similar results if you put your mind to it.

Welcome RipleyBird! Be sure to read the articles on nutrition and try some of the fitness videos. There is no such thing as "spot reducing," and you'll be disappointed when the ab exercises don't fix the muffin. Take it slow and steady, eat healthy, and it will disappear. Good luck!

my problem is just not to lose weight but to keep it off.I stuggle with compulsive/binge eating.I'm trying to eat healthier even though I have to admit I'm worst than a teen when it comes to wanting to eat crappy foods.I work in a high school cafateria which doesn't help.

I too lost the weight I wanted to three years ago. My husband became seriously ill and I did a lot of stress eating I now weigh more than I did before the illness. So now in order to better care for him I need to get more fit and lose some of the weight baggage.

Hi-
I've been a sparker since 2008. I finally lost all my weight I wanted in 2011....that 35 pounds came off oh so slowly. I've been very active physically (I run 5 times a week) and the problem with me is, I enjoy eating too much. I have a 155 pound appetite when I need a 135 pound one.

So, this year I am really focusing on getting in touch with why I eat, how much I eat...and that's why I want to be part of this group and meet some new folks.

Hi, my name is Monica. I have rejoined Spark to help me to reach my goal to rediscover the strong, healthy, confident, and resilient self. I originally discovered this self when I was in my early 40's and lost 150 lbs through healthy eating and exercise. I did well for 8 years until injury, chronic pain, and work issues when I slipped back into old bad habits.

Last April, I had put back on 95 lbs and I no longer recognized myself. I joined another online weight loss plan and lost 50 lbs, but the program had no community nor the resources of Spark. Wow, Spark has changed all for the better since the last time I was a member. I'm very excited to be back and look forward to participating with this team.

Hi! My name is Karen. Apparently I joined Spark in 2012 but never came back! My doctor recommended this site (pre-diabetic and depression). My problem is that I have little motivation to get started. I know once I do start I will feel better. I am divorced and have one grown son who is out on his own. Just had to put my best four legged buddy down (cancer) and moved into a new apartment in a new community. Guess I don't do anything in a small way! Also I am in graduate school which makes me feel rather alienated being around all those twenty somethings. I definitely want to meet others with whom I can create nurturing supportive relationships with. Anyone game?

Hi all. I'm really glad the holidays are over and I can return to my discipline of eating clean and exercising. I took a break from taking care myself starting with Halloween. Ugh!!! I am looking forward to sticking with a plan of action and connecting with like-minded people. I want to lose 35 pounds by eating with humility, exercising moderately, and doing some weight training, since I am now 51. My health is good overall, and I want to keep it that way. I'm all for making new SP friends, so I hope to hear from you all! :) Have a wonderful 2015. I love odd numbered years! This is going to be a stellar year!

You've come to the right place! Be sure to take advantage of as many features at SparkPeople as you can. The nutrition and fitness trackers are great! Use the videos to add fitness activities to your day - even as little as 10 minutes a day can make a difference. Read the articles for motivation and ideas. Find new friends here that can give you the support you need.

Good luck!

There are so many people on SP who prove that age has no bearing on our ability to get healthy and in shape! I am inspired every day.

I have come back onto Spark People after a four year absence. My goal is to loose about 25-30 lbs and feel better inside as well as outside. Now that I have put the SP app on my phone, I am hoping I can be proactive in my own health and be accountable.

I have had it in my head for many years if I was over 50 there is no way to get back into shape. I am praying that this group will prove to me that my thinking is incorrect. :)

Thank you for being a part of my life changing journey :)

Thank-you. I will check those settings. Yes my wonderful, supportive husband Dale! Was one of my more current photos. Took me a while to figure out photos but I am learning. I sell on ebay so I had some pre knowledge of that hurdle. Thanks for being so nice and answering my posts :) Elisa

You're doing great, Elisa! When you go to someone's SparkPage, you'll see a button that says "Add as SparkFriend". Just click it to add them to your friend's list. They will get a notification, and then they can add you back. There are some things that only work when you both confirm the friendship, if I'm not mistaken.

By the way, there are some things that don't show up on the site until you choose to make them public in your profile. I encourage you to make your SparkPage public, as well as some of your activities like your fitness tracker. You do that by editing your SparkPage. The first two checkboxes ("Only allow my SparkFriends to see my page" and "Turn my page offline") should be unchecked to make your SparkPage public.

I love your profile pic, by the way! What a great looking couple you are!

Hi Elisa!

To get a ticker for your signature, put your mouse over your username in the upper right corner of the web page. Click on Account/E-Mail Preferences in the menu that appears. Click on the Community tab when you get to the preferences page, then click on the Signature & Ticker button. You can then customize your ticker, add some text for your signature, and update your profile picture.

There are many other settings you can adjust in the preferences section - have fun!

Hello from chilly Nebraska! My goal is to loose 25 lbs by April and also to become stronger. I am 8 years post gastric bypass and have slipped into some poor habits in the last 5 years. Weight has started to creep back. Was taking a sleeping pill and waking up at 2 am and eating before I was even aware. Since that was corrected last year and I started weighing myself I have lost 10 lbs in 2014. Most just from the medication change. Now I want to become stronger and loose that last 25 lbs. My weight loss ideas have been stuck in the 1980's and I know so much has changed. I am 55 and ADMITTING I do not know all the facts about living healthy.

Goal is tracking food, drinking more water and walking 2 miles 4-7 days a week. I have been walking for the last 7 days every day and feel the benefits already. Sleeping better and I feel very energetic!

Hope to hear from someone :)

Hi Vickie! I'm 57 and have been gaining and losing the same 30-40 pounds practically all my life, so I feel your pain. You've come to the right place! The recipes on SP are great, just make sure you are aware of your portions. Read some of the articles for motivation and helpful hints. I've been here for 2 months, and while I haven't lost a ton of weight yet, I am replacing fat pounds with muscle pounds, so my clothes are fitting better, I have more energy, and I feel SO MUCH better!

Some tips I've gotten from other Sparkers that have really helped me:

Make sure you're pushing yourself with your exercise. Try to go at least one step above your comfort level with every workout.

Measure your portions carefully and accurately. Don't just use your eyeballs. I got an electronic scale for the kitchen and use the measuring cups all the time now.

Drink more water than you think you need. (This is still a challenge for me.) Get your 8 glasses, plus an extra glass for every 15 minutes of exercise. I'm typing this now as much to remind me as to help you. LOL

I hope you enjoy your time on SparkPeople. I love it here (to the point that my husband accuses me of spending 8 hours on the site every day - I laughed and said it's only 7 LOL) and hope you do too!

Hello, my name is Vickie and I am going to try this program to see if it will work. I am over 50 in a job where everyone is young and my extra weight does not help. I exercise regularly but cannot lose the extra 20-40 pounds that I think I need to lose to look good and keep up at work. It doesn't help that my husband is naturally slender. However, he is willing to help me and as he is the chef of the family this should help. Any favorite recipes would be greatly appreciated.

Vickie

Hi Christy! There are a lot of good recipes here - be sure to check them out. Spicy food can be healthy, and the spiciness can even boost your metabolism. It's about what ELSE is in the recipe that can make the dish less good for you.

We hope you find lots of resources here to help you in your journey! Glad you're here!

Hi, I have been trying to lose weight for 30 years and I am successful at times, but then I get tired of my food restrictions and start over eating. I like spicy foods and they are what helps satisfy my appetite, but I want healthy foods. I am looking for good tasting recipes that don't require off the wall ingredients to make. I am hoping with the recipes they will keep me away from the junk food.

Hi! I'm again on SparkPeople for the 3rd time because it's the only thing that has ever worked for me in the past.

I'm a 52 year old grandmother of 2 gorgeous babies and I want to be around for them and to see them grow up. I am a type 2 insulin dependent diabetic and am currently on a lot of medications to help control my blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol among other comorbidities associated with diabetes.

I have already had a TIA and have had Cushings Syndrome due to a tumor on my adrenal gland. I had surgery for that so I am effectively cured of it!

My goal is going to be to get these last 45 pounds off by the end of 2015 if not sooner.

Wish me luck and add me as a friend! emoticon

To all of you who posted here recently, I just want to say thank you for sharing your stories. I joined SparkPeople about 4 weeks ago, and it has been a huge inspiration to me. I may not have a lot of weight to lose, but I've been losing the same 30 pounds since I was 15! It's time to lose them FOR GOOD! LOL

There are so many great resources here to help you get your life on track. I am using the nutrition tracker and the fitness tracker pretty religiously. I try to keep track of every morsel I eat (even licking the spoon :D) but I also keep track of every bit of exercise I do as long as my heart beats a little faster and my breathing is a little heavier. I've lost 5 pounds so far, and I'm happy not only with that, but also with the fact that my clothes are starting to fit better.

YOU CAN DO THIS! Believe in yourself. Set goals and stick with them (but make them reasonable and achievable, ok?). Read the articles and try some of the exercise videos, starting with the easiest ones.

I'm 57 and want to be in the best shape of my life before I'm 60, and stay there. This website is helping me reach those goals.

Best of luck to you all!

Steve

Hi. I posted above. My profile photo lies but it it is where Id like to be back at. Thats around 15 kilo lighter. My weight has ballooned due to meds and lack of exercise. Joined my workplace gym a month ago. Have lost no weight yet but I do feel better. Have more energy and hopefully that combined with weaning myself off the meds and a healthy eating programme i will see my shape changing.😨

Hello! I joined SparkPeople last year, used the food tracker and exercised regularly, lost 10 pounds, then went off and gained them back. I've returned having learned that I need to do everything I can and use the tools freely available here, NO excuses, to reach my goal of 45 pounds weight loss. I'm aiming for 1/2 to 1 pound weekly. I'd really like to connect with some Sparklers who are also seriously committed to shared weekly weigh-ins, regular exercise, use of SP tools like the food tracker, exchanging encouragement and helpful information.

Hi! I'm Ria from North Dakota. Lost 30 lbs 12 years ago from my daughters wedding and gained it all back plus some after 55! I want to reach my goal and healthy weight before my anniversary in February when we are going to Florida.

Getting motivated to exercise in cold ND is tough. But I have lots of DVDs on hand and with the help of our Spark Team hope to achieve my goal.

The upcoming holidays will make it tough.

Is it harder to lose weight after 50?

I lost a lot of muscle and gained body fat over the past 6 months after an accident that landed me in the hospital and then a wheelchair for 12 weeks. I started exercises a month ago, but haven't seen a measurable difference in how my clothes fit. I joined SP on Monday to try the tools here. So far, I like it a lot (although it's a bit of a time suck LOL), and the nutrition tracker is helping me see how healthy my eating habits really are (surprise - they are pretty good!). I love the trophies and the points. I'm trying SparkCoach, and using as many of the motivational tools as I can to help me stay on track.

Nice to meet you all!

Steve

I am new on SP,again. I have joined several times but never participated in the communities and I feel that is where I failed. I hope to first develop healthier eating habits and second start becoming more active. I found that menopause has changed my body into one soft, mushy mess and I don't like the way I look or feel. I am in the process of selling my house and the stress has led me to seek out my best friend = food! I need to break this bad habit. I want to feel energetic and healthy.

Good luck to you, I don't want to gain any more weight either, Im the heaviest ever I weigh the same as I did when I was 9 months pregnant with my daughter 25 yrs ago. So, I just want to start slowly and make this a forever thing, I have always had a problem with weight but never this bad, menopause has shifted my weight and made it harder to lose so need to start doing something.

Kurtzie1998 - I love that you set monthly goals and that they are attainable!

So my goals for November are -
1.To get up off my duff and add some walking to my day - 15 minutes minimum per day!
2.To listen to my body, eat only when hungry, not when bored, emotional etc.
3. Check in on SparkPeople to continue my motivation!

I am 30 pounds overweight. I do not like the way I look and feel. Therefore, I have join sparkpeople for the information and motivation to keep going. It is a slow process. I started with a goal of 2 pounds per week but it is coming off 1 pounds a week, As I am only three weeks into this, I hope to figure out the process so I can pick up to 2 pounds gone per week. Today, I did meet a new goal of 10,000 steps in a day.Maybe this will be the extra kick I need to move that scale down.

Larger size clothes are off limits for me too. It is weight off and smaller clothes only for me.

Grant me motivation and patience with this process..

APPY-Laurie, good for you for setting smaller goals. I also set smaller goals and reward myself with something small. I also refuse to buy bigger sizes. I did go through all my clothes about a year ago and got rid of anything that didn't fit. So when I lose weight, I'm going to have to wear baggy clothes for awhile, then buy a few in-between clothes (thrift and discount stores, here I come!), before I get to my goal.

Good luck!

HI.
I am about to turn 60 soon and I have so many reasons to lose weight.
*Family history of weight related heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure, which luckily and thankfully, I have none of yet.
* My sport is Equestrian and of course, the less weight you put on your horses back the better.
* I like to look good. Right now I only have a few outfits that fit me for work and I refuse to buy bigger. I have owned bigger and when I lost weight several years ago I got rid of all those.
* I want to get back to my former fitness level fro a several years back. It is possible. I need to be stronger.

I have been doing this plan right for two weeks. I have lost 2 lbs. I am so happy about that. This weight did not go on fast and it isn't going to come off fast. I weigh 205 and I had a goal of 180 for starters. But my mini goals are 5 lb at a time. Every time I take of 5 more lbs I am going for a manicure or spa thing or something.

Hi there! I've struggled with weight all my adult life. Childhood was no problem--looking back, I was scrawny. Then I got pregnant and gained 50 pounds. I had a large baby, but not that big! I gained all the baby weight back. Got divorced, gained more weight. Got a settlement from the divorce, and joined NutriSystem where I got back to my pre-pregnancy weight! I was even in a NutriSystem commercial!

Fast forward ten years, and my brain exploded (sub-arachnoid hemorrhage) and with the resultant surgeries, and several after that (not related), I gained back everything and then some. I've tried NutriSystem again, and have been on Weight Watchers a couple of times.

I found SparkPeople a few days ago and liked what I saw.

My goal is to lose 47 pounds by my wedding anniversary next June. My goal is to start and continue exercising on a regular basis. My goal is to eat proper portions. My goal is to cook healthy (I do anyway, but I want to continue this).

My goal is a healthier lifestyle in 2015.

I joined WW back in 2006, and over the next 18 months I lost 65 pounds. I was maintaining really well, but then my husband got sick in April 2013. That was definitely a challenge, but he was rehabilitated to actually driving the car, and living his life by Oct 2013. Then Nov 8th 2013 he had a stroke, and life has been very challenging ever since.

I have gained 40 pounds I don't want, and I have been so overwhelmed in my role as his caregiver, that I was struggling to get myself motivated for action.

But about 3 weeks ago something shifted in my Spirit, and I was able to put a plan in to play and actually see progress. I have also been doing October:Unprocessed on fb, and that too has been incredibly motivating.

So, I have cancelled my WW etools and active link, and joined SP. I'm looking forward to the experience. I look forward to my success.

My starting measures: 38199 steps/week 4774.9 steps/day
January Goal: 5252.0 steps/day
February Goal: 5777.0 steps/day 10% increase over January

Love your new Month a new day a new beginning.
Your plan sounds very great KURTZIE1998.

I have 7 pounds to my next short term goal, I am doing a 10lbs short time goal on Spark each time, until I reach my 128 lbs. Each time I reach that 10 lb loss it makes me feel more confident since June 2014 I have reach the 10 lb goal 4 times working on the 5th time right now :)

I'm sure there is way more to this than can be brought out in one post, but if you were eating proper portions and exercising why you didn't lose weight. For me, the key was changing what I ate not how much. Focused on more veggies and protein, cut out sugary stuff that didn't stick with me.

Hang in there. You have to explore and find out what works for you. You will get lots of good advice here.

I started this journey when I gained weight after being stuck in bed for nearly a year. I gained weight but none of my doctors were worried because they were more concerned with diagnosing my vertigo.

But then I kept gaining even after the diagnosis and still seemed unconcerned. I went to Weight Watchers and learned NOTHING. I already ate well. My doctor even sent me to a nutritionist thinking she could help but she kept looking at my food journal and her only recommendation was to eat more calories. Everything else was fine--from portion control to eating enough vegetables, etc. Again, nothing helpful.

My husband was diagnosed with diabetes so a lot of the health focus shifted to him for a while and, during that time, I gained another 20 lbs.

At the beginning of this year, I weighed more than I have EVER. I also finally started losing weight. Then I visited my mother and regained some of it. Came home and lost all of the weight I had regained. Then my son visited and cooked for me and I regained the weight I had lost--again! So I lost almost all of it when I tore my meniscus and was stuck back in bed for two months before an orthopedic specialist finally gave me a shot and, in an instant, I was pain free.

I was also diagnosed with severe osteoarthritis and all of my research has said the same thing: lose weight to ease stress on the joints. I am still overweight and I'm determined to get my BMI into a healthy range.

I know what to do. I know how to eat well. I can do this. And I have the support and encouragement of my loved ones. I also am about to face a string of food-centric holidays: three birthdays, Halloween candy, Thanksgiving, and then Christmas.

If I can end the year without gaining anymore weight, that would be good. If I can end the year having lost some more weight, that would be great!

PS: I still don't have any friends here on SparkPeople so, if you're looking to add someone, please add me.

Thanks everyone!!!! I am still struggling with my weight, I was down nine and now I am up two. I have not done anything different staying within calories, Trying my best to follow the wheel. This is just so upsetting. I am so glad I have this place to vent. I am in this for the long haul. So I am just going to have to deal with the bumpy ride. emoticon

Meemaw57 I know what you mean about pressure from friends. Maybe they have underlying guilt that they are not taking steps to be healthy and feel judged. At any rate, this is your journey not theirs. Do it for you. I just tell friends to go ahead and enjoy, but I secretly feel better knowing I am making better choices for me.

Kurtzie1998 I like your goals. Very doable. The short term goal I am working on right now is to lose 20 pounds by my birthday at the end of November. I have 6 more pounds to go!

Thanks PGAINES! I really think I need all the help I can get. That is why I am here. All of the people I am around are very over weight I mean most of them need to loss over 200 pounds and they just do not want to do anything about it. Everything is about food it is hard. I love these people. But they get so angry when I choose to not let food be the center of my life. I try to be kind and just tell them I am not going to eat unhealthy. They take it so personally. As if I am trying to force them to eat healthy too. I know losing weight has to be a personal choice believe me I know. But I just do not understand why eating healthy can't be one also. If anyone out there can help me with this. I would really like some advice. I not it is good to just vent.

Welcome Meema57! I restarted too and its really nice to talk to people going thru the same struggles and goals. Sometimes all we need is to have a place to vent our frustrations and get motivation. Keep tracking your food, that's always an eye opener for me. Have a great week!

Great goals Donna! breaking up your exercise into manageable times is good. I need to do that myself. I do find when I track both exercise and food it keeps me motivated. Good luck and you can do this!

My goal is to be healthy, live longer and walk longer so I will be in shape for backpacking. In order to get my BMI down to where it should be I need to lose 30 lbs.

To accomplish that, I commit to:

1. 1 HOUR of structured exercise 4 DAYS A WEEK -- this is my biggest challenge.
2. SET A TIMER so I exercise for 10 minutes and then eat a small meal.
3. Record all of my exercise and food.

It's not the destination, it's the journey. Make it worth the trip!

Losing weight is sure a mental thing. We have to find out why we overeat and rethink our responses. Make this the time you succeed.

I used to think it was easier to lose lots more quickly if you had a lot to lose, but then I realized no matter where you start it's that last pound that is the hardest to get rid of. And we will lose that last pound!

I am what I think you think I am.

Lost 10 pounds so far. Next short goal is 10 more pounds by the end of November (my birthday). Added in cardio 2x a week and strength workouts at home. Changed up my diet to more of a high protein and cut way back on sugar. Working pretty good so far.

Hi:
I'm back to SP again after not being on the site all summer. I lost 30 lbs in the first 6 month this year. I didn't gain or lose through the summer. Now I really want to get it in gear and lose the last 25 lbs.

Haven't used Spark for at least 2 years. I'm at top weight ever and know I need to stop the madness. I'm starting with baby steps, like just being mindful of what I'm eating and trying to be a little more active.

I am what I think you think I am.
