I think you've hit the nail on the head. It depends on your circumstances. I do not have people around me who are supportive in this area, but are terrific in other ways. I have epilepsy and need a lot of help from my husband and friends, so to ask them for one more thing seems over the top. That's why I'm glad I found SP. I definitely need encouragement and the feeling of belonging to a group. The motivational ideas and the ability to give back have been great.

That really is a great question and the responses from team members show that it depends on the individual and their particular circumstances. If you have a lot of supportive friends or family members it makes sense to tell and let them support and encourage you. On the other hand, if your friends or family are saboteurs, it is best to keep it to yourself so their "policing" efforts don't drag you down. I told my family and some of my friends and when they saw some progress they joined in.

I love that Captain of the Diet Police. I know him. Im married to the lieutenant. I think it's a good idea not to tell, or at least be very selective. I've one those weight loss programs where you're suppose to ask 7 people to support you. I really don't have that many friends or family that care that much, which makes you feel kind of rejected after awhile. So this time around I will definitely go with telling only my sister and sticking with this site.

Once you are on the way. I mean you have got a handle on it and are losing then if they ask you can tell. I'm like Tom I don't need someone watching every last lick or taste I have and holding it against me. I am human and I can manage most of the time but I need to be in charge of me. I am the one who won't be able to get out of the car when it is in the garage if my rear is to big!!!

Such an interesting question and one I was pondering earlier today. I usually tell, mainly because it seemed to me that it would make e more accountable. But with recent setbacks and do-overs, I'm starting to feel like I'm just never going to get it right and I'm letting others down. A catch-22 for sure!

I mostly keep it to myself. I will tell someone if they notice my weight loss or if they ask me how I am doing it. But mostly I keep quite because I am doing this mainly for myself and don't need someone being the "Diet Police" My goal is to be healthy and to stay alive to be with my wife and children for as long as God allows me to walk on this earth.

Hi Groupies,

Renewnan mentioned that not telling the people around us is a good "weapon." I just happen to agree with this philosophy for several reasons not the least of which is that my husband doesn't support me as much as he makes himself the Captain of the Diet Police. I have more reasons but enough about me. I want to know if you tell (or don't tell) people (not counting Sparkers) that you are managing your food and exercise differently or do you keep your cards close to your chest? Tell me why. Inquiring minds want to know.
