Hi and emoticon I'm afraid to say Cynthia and Carol that I am one who is on the dark side - I eat meat emoticon However, DH and I do eat semi-veg some days - beans and greens, that kind of good comfort food. We eat very little red meat - mostly chicken, eggs, and low-fat cheese. I do allow myself the indulgence of a good lean pork tenderloin grilled the way only DH can grill it now and then. I must say that since I started back on Spark - determined - in May, I eat very little meat and chicken and tons of fresh spinach, leaf and romaine lettuce, cukes, tomatoes, and all kinds of fresh fruits. emoticon

Having a dog to walk is a big plus because it's forced exercise - good for you and for the dog. Unfortunately, I have a 20+ lb. 14 yr. old Pug who thinks 50 ft. constitutes a long walk. As a result, I wind up carrying her and with my bum hip, I can't do that anymore. So, I do my walking and jogging in a swimming pool. I've been thinking about getting another dog and if I do, it is going to be one I can walk with - not carry emoticon emoticon

It is good to have you on the team, Cynthia emoticon This really is a great team. We have a lot of fun but everyone is always there to encourage and support each other - and give each other a emoticon on those days when things aren't going so great. If you use your Nutrition Tracker faithfully; check your daily report to make sure you're getting the nutrients you need; stay active with your teams; and have fun along the way - you can't miss emoticon

Sad to say, when Christmas rolled around I couldn't resist baking all our favorite cookies. I thought I would go back to the vegan diet after I got that out of my system, but I never did. That was 1-1/2 years ago.

We don't eat red meat or chicken at home very often and we try to buy it from sources that show some respect for the animals' welfare. Same thing for any dairy products we buy.

But...living near Philadelphia, one of my weaknesses is cheesesteaks. In fact, my birthday meal each year is a cheesesteak and Italian water ice (from a real South Philly Italian source, not - UGH - Rita's). And I'm sure those steaks aren't from a very humane source.

So, I'm not proud to say it, but I do still occasionally give in to my urge for red meat. I remind myself that my efforts may not be perfect, but we've cut our consumption of beef, pork, and chicken way back since I first did research into our food industry. I don't miss those foods that much and actually seem to enjoy them more, when I do indulge, since it's so infrequent.

Good luck to you, making changes in your diet. There are so many delicious sources of protein that cutting back on meat and poultry isn't that hard. I found that it helps when the food still looks a lot like what you used to have. I've made tofu meatballs, fake chicken nuggets, and veggie meatloaf that were all very good. But I know the familiar appearance helped, too. "It's all in the presentation."

Hi Carol,

Thanks for the encouragement. My daughter keeps me apprised of the gruesome and gritty details of our food industry and its myriad of methods, especially in the meat industry. emoticon Most unpleasant and people who watch that stuff, I am finding, generally stop eating meat eventually. I haven't even watched it and don't want to eat it anymore just from her descriptions.

You say you were on a vegan diet for 8 months. Are you still on a semi-vegetarian? How is that going for you?

I give you credit for trying a semi-vegetarian diet. It's not easy, eliminating those foods we've grown up with and loved all our lives. I've done it before and even ate a vegan diet for 8 months. It can be challenging but very rewarding in terms of your health and your impact on our planet. (Google "factory farms" if you want a real eye-opener about our food supply.)

Good luck. SparkPeople has teams for vegetarians if you need extra help.

Welcome to the team and best of luck in your journey to better health! I have a cocker spaniel who thoroughly enjoys our morning walks so she keeps me active (people who see us say she walks me!). This is a great site for help and encouragement and I especially like the trackers as they keep me in line.

Hello Fellow Losers! (LOL....you know what I mean! emoticon

I'm coming to you live--but sleepy--from Oregon and looking forward to getting to know some of you through this group and the forums. It's good to know you're not fighting the battle alone. I'm embarking on a whole new way of eating--vegetarian. I live in a loft above an organic market and there are restaurants in the next block of every ethnicity you can think of, so it can be a real challenge to eat rice crackers and Laughing Cow cheese when what you really want is a ribeye steak from a dead cow, cooked medium rare sitting on a plate in front of you.

I am 59 and will be 60 next May, so I would like to drop 40 pounds by the first of the year. I'd also like to go to Israel next year, LORD willing, and would like to be in good shape for that. I have been a walker for years and years and still walk about 90 minutes a day (I have a dog, Molly, aka "She Who Will Be Walked," so I have no choice), but last year I cut out bread, pasta, sweets and diet Coke and now I am working on the veg voyage (but I will eat fish and eggs).

I have a disease that causes severe esophageal spasms (like a Charlie horse in your leg, but in your esophagus) and what I eat directly affects the severity, longevity (of the episode), and frequency of them. Process of elimination is teaching me a lot.

Good to be here! emoticon
