Please be careful with your spinal cord injury (I have DDD so I understand). Can't stress enough how important it is to be assessed by a physical therapist to give you guidance about your exercise regime. It's possible to do more harm than good! I used to backpack, hike, lift weights, in short lived a very active lifestyle...and I still do, but my exercises are very different now.
Congrats on your motivation to lose the excess weight~you can do this!!! We are all here for each other and there's lots of good information to be found. One day at a time is a very powerful mantra!

Lots of fresh fruits and veggies!!! The fill you up and don't have a lot of calories (as long as you don't put a tone of butter and dip on them). I take them as my midafternoon snack to work.

Hi SAharley.

Since calories in/calories out is king as far as weight loss goes, it's a necessity to count those little buggars. I hated to do that in the beginning. I did Nutrisystem for a while and just began noting the calories, even though the plan didn't call for it, and it just became a habit. Took about a week for the habit to begin to take shape.

There are loads of recipes on Sparkpeople, most being for several servings. Just freeze the leftovers for another time.

There's also a lot of quizzes to take that are very informative as well as articles and blogs from other members. Just explore the site as far as the community and your spark points page for the quizzes. They are all very helpful.

Hello I'm new to this site and am hoping to loose 20lbs in which I have gained in a very short time frame. I just found out I'm starting menopause and that could be the culprit. I've also had neck surgery in the past year and am disabled so haven't been very active. I just joined my local gym and hope this helps. To be honest I'm very lucky and have never been on a diet and always have been able to eat whatever I wanted and this is going to be very hard for me especially the calorie counting . I'm divorced and live by myself so hope their are some easy recipes out there for cooking for one. I don't mind exercising and have been going 3-4 times a week for like 45 min. to an hour. All of my weight I've gained seems like is around the middle it's disgusting I have fat rolls on my back and have lost most of any muscle tone I had since my surgery. I do have a spinal cord injury so that is why I'm disabled and can't do some of the hard core exercise classes. I'm going to try Pilates and yoga, my balance is very poor also. My neurosurgeon suggested silver sneakers but I'm going to try the others first. Today I have started a 45-day fit challenge at my gym so will hope this works. As I said before the eating part for me is going to be very difficult counting calories. Any advise you have for me would be greatly appreciated.
