Hi, everyone,

My name is Jeannette. I am 68, Norwegian and Irish. I was my Mom's primary caregiver for 15 years. She died of Alzheimer's at the age of 95 on August 1, a long productive life except for the last five years which no one should have to go through. She is now at rest.

During the time I cared for her I was able to lose 30 pounds and maintain that loss for several years. But during her last five years is when I regained the 30 pounds plus. I've have tried several times to lose and would lose a few only to regain. So now that the stress is over, I joined SparkPeople to take care of myself. I will need encouragement and hope after a while will be able to do the same for others. This sounds like a good group to join. I welcome you into my life!

Have to be brief, as I'm at work at the moment.

I'm 56 and have been around Sparks a looooong time. I hit my goal weight once. Have struggled ever since. Especially now with a fulltime desk job. Glad to be employed now, but have so little time. I've been trying really hard the last couple of months, but probably due to lack of consistency I guess, can't get more than a couple of pounds to budge, and then boom, it's right back.

I even tried a whack at low-carb, high protein dieting recently. It was going ok, until I went on a short vacation. Took me forever to get back on track. I guess some of this belongs on another thread.

Anyway - I live in Texas, married, 3 kids, 3 grandkids. all for now.

_Made it back to add what I forgot. In the past I've joined teams but didn't stay as I didn't have much time to post and keep up. I'll do my best here, but that's my history.

emoticon Hi, I've been a SparkPeople member for a year and a half, and am moving through the teams as I make my way to being healthy. I started losing in December 2014,and in 20 months have lost and maintained 120 pounds. I did not have weight loss surgery, but I did just recently have abdominal skin pannus removed for health reasons. Now that I no longer have that problem holding me back, I'm on my way to the 150-155 range.

Hi all I am a retired nurse or is it TIRED nurse I enjoy retirement and being my own boss. I have been in sparkpeople off and on.....I have to remember to log in daily....I like my rebounder for exercise and I am working with an exercise weighted hula hoop, I am not as good on it as when I was a child but improving a little at a time .....

Hi! Well, I've been a member for a while, but I too have been on and off. So here I go again, this time I paid for Premium, so that I would commit more.

I was a WW leader/member and have managed to keep 20 pounds off of my original 34.5 pounds, since I retired 4 years ago, due to an auto immune disease.

The biggest problem since achieving that in 2002, I have gone from 5'6.5" to 5'5" so now I would like to get down 15-20 pounds and drop at least 3 BMI points. Shrinking as you age! Really not fair! Ahhhhh!

HI! I have been on Spark for five years and on this team for awhile but I have not been good at posting regularly. I do track my food and exercise but I will try to be more active on this team. I had lost weight but now it is all back due in part to thyroid problems that I am experiencing and waiting on more blood work before they start me on meds.
I am a 2nd grade teacher and believe it or not we start school again on Aug. 10th. so I am a little exhausted from working late to get my room ready.

I've been on Sparkpeople for a while (with varying success and failures) and am hoping that I can learn from this group and move forward in what has been a bit of a frustrating journey so far.

Hadn't ever had weight issues prior to my mid-forties but as soon as I quit smoking the pounds slowly began to creep on.

I've set myself a goal of losing the 15kg and am now using the 5:2 plan along with exercise - and am committed to making this work!

Nothing tastes as good as being stupendous at sixty is going to look and feel!

I'm Patsy!

I joined SP this month & am still finding my way around the site (choosing not to live on the PC but instead enjoying the great weather & outdoors). I just signed up for a 10K walk in three weeks so it's important that I continue my local "walk-abouts" and at home treadmill steppin' so I can enjoy the walk (will take 2 to 2-l/2 hours).

I gained weight when I quit smoking (my 4 years smobriety was July 3rd!) because I substituted my nicotine with a food addiction. Addictions love to do that; get one under control & another "bulges" to the front.

I'm losing the last 15 lbs (maybe 20 lbs!) & it has been challenging for me (I'm on NS & am also a FitBit'er). Age DOES matter. I am not social security eligible yet but getting there (another birthday is coming in August)!

Bit by bit I am reaching my weight goal! I WILL get there again (& then maintain it)!

Hi - My name is Karie and I am 52. I work as the Coordinator of Senior Ministries for our church (assisting elderly and homebound) and as a result I know first hand that if we aren't healthy in our 50s we WILL be sick in our 60s and beyond.

I have 10-12 pounds to lose but can only do very low impact exercises due to a neck injury from a fall while running (who says exercise is good for you?? haha). The neck injury causes intermittent pain and exercise induced migraines if I do anything too strenuous. The doctor says "no" every time I ask if I can if run. So, alas...I walk. It's just not burning the same as running was - I just seem to stay steady - not losing or gaining. To add to the difficulties, I live in Alabama which is just south of Hell in the summertime. emoticon

Any suggestions on some low impact - high return exercises would be much appreciated!

HI Diane,
you're really smart to nip the gain while its still single digit. Good to keep busy, active. I plan on trying "paddle-board" with a buddy in July. Cant be too hard. I see older women on the ad's and they look fine, One had a dog in the back of the board emoticon

Hi, my name is Diane. I am a 76 year old retired senior. I started SP in 2014 and had lost 68 pounds. I did very good my first year with SP. In my second year I started snacking. Since February of this year the snacking has gotten out of control. I dont know why I am sabotaging myself but I need to stop. Ive regained 8 of the 68 pounds I lost. This means I now have 15 pounds to reach goal (150).
I find myself with too much time on my hands. I am learning to quilt. I also crochet/knit and do cross stitch. I am hoping the quilting will work to keep me busier.

Hi, Everyone- I have been on Spark before and came back today because I am finding these last 15 lbs. really hard to lose. I do pretty good all day but I find it really hard to stop the late night snacks. I am hoping that with the support of others and by tracking what I eat, I'll finally get to my goals. It's getting hot here in AZ - just about 115 degrees today. You would think the heat would diminish the appetite - not so I'm afraid emoticon Anyway, I'm glad to be part of this team and look forward to sharing with all of you.

HI I'm 55 and need to get to 157lbs. I was in the spring challenge (team emerald) and lost a bit but want to branch out. Days right now include the veggie garden, outside stuff (we live on 10 acres), my grandkids and daughter. They live nearby and work PT. I do plan most meals but boredom or procrastinating leads me to eat.

Greetings to all you inspiring people! I am in Canada where beautiful weather has finally arrived, needing to get back on the straight and narrow. I lost 35 pounds four years ago, and 8 have crept back on just recently. Hoping to lose 13 to make the total 40 and then try to stay there. Love the feeling of being fit and strong, and YES it is possible after 50. I'm now 62 and need some swift kicks in what I hope will be a re-shrinking derriere. I have decided to give Spark People another try. I lost 20 pounds using Spark People about five years ago...Unfortunately, they are now back plus 10...Would be happy losing 5 pounds a year instead of gaining 10...I am on prednisone until tomorrow...so I will start focusing on eating right Sunday...

I joined a gym and have been doing weighlifting one day along with 30 minutes of cardio and then 60 minutes of cardio another day since January and have lost only 3 pounds. I am very frustrated...Maybe logging food here will help.

Hi I'm a newbie. I have lost 75 pounds, but this last ten is giving me grief. At 5'8" I got a range of 122-164 as optimal. My BMI is good. I hate to exercise but am working toward 10,000 steps with FitBit Alta. I have osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia so have been a coach potato for too long.

You're right that media, fashion and our culture bends toward "young, thin = beautiful". But I think we need to not care what others say is beautiful. We need to define that for ourselves. I completely understand how difficult that is - I've spent much of my life fighting the battle. But at 64 I think I've defined beauty for myself and it rarely has to do with looks.
Not to say I don't still struggle. But when I take a breath in the middle of all the noise I know that I'm the one that determines whether I'm good enough or not.

I'm 64 and pretty healthy. My weight has been creeping back up over the last 2 years. I've got 25 pounds to lose and I'm overwhelmed at having to do this yet again in my life. But I'm willing to try. I've never used message boards before but after reading an article today and realizing that doing this without support isn't very pleasant. I'm diving in.

Hello
I turned 50 in September and didn't realize that your body will start doing its own thing at this age!! I joined SparkPeople in '09 and with it lost 100 lbs! But in the past 2 years, because of injuries and body changes, I have gained back 30 of those pounds! So I am here trying to stay/regain my motivation and lose those pounds and more. I'm at 208 now, but my long term goal is to be under 170. I'm having to learn to eat differently and in different quantities now that I am older. I eat pretty clean 80% of the time. But my portions are way off. I exercise roughly 4-6 times a week, but am not able to have the intensity I once had because of some injuries to my shoulder, hand and knee. I know it will take time. Unfortunately, I'm not good at waiting or changing! Thank you in advance for any and all help you guys can give.

I'm Nancy from cold and still snowy Michigan. I'm 59 years old, happily married for 39 years and grandmother to 10 wonderful grandchildren.

I'm a late in life runner, very active and watch what I eat. This past year, I've put on 15 lbs, which is a lot on my small frame. I'm trying to change things around and hopefully get back into my summer clothing before it warms up here.

Hi all! This is my second go round at SP. Last time was 10 years ago when I was a new mom! The weight has crept back up over the years and although I have stayed more active than before (I am running 3-5 miles 4x a week) I feel like my metabolism has changed at 50 and I once more need to count my calories. It was so successful for me last time around. I would like to loose 10-12 pounds.

Thanks for the warm welcomes! I live in Florida, 61 with 20 pounds to lose. Struggle with exercise due to needing a hip replacement that I hope to put off for another 4 years. If I exercise a lot, I will pay in pain the next few days. I know SparkPeople works, I'm coming back after a few years.

Hi, This is a first for me - both joining a weight loss program and sharing it. I'm 65, retired early ten years ago and weight has gone up by at least a kilo a year. I got to 100kg, had a pulmonary embolism a year ago and now trying to avoid a repeat. Need meds to control high blood pressure so weight loss should help too. Now 94.5kg. and first goal is to get down to retirement weight 85kg. Used to run regularly until wear and tear of calf muscles resulted in severe cramps after just ten mins. Haven't found an exercise routine to replace running so sort of gave up and just dipped in and out with occasional burst of enthusiasm for gym or cycling but didn't change my eating habits. Result is where I am now, which I am trying to put right. I've uploaded "before" photos to my Sparkpage so I know I have to keep this going.

Hi. My name is Susan. I am not new to SP but new to the group and trying to back on course. I've had hip problems for the past 5 years which has made exercise sporadic but had it replaced a year ago. No more excuses.

Only those who attempt the absurd...will achieve the impossible.

Greetings and palpitations, everyone! I'm Jerry. My 60th birthday is coming up later this year. None of us know how many of those landmarks we have left, and I would like to make the most of however many are allotted to me. Until about 8 years ago, I was in decent physical condition: I could run (super slowly) 4 or 5 miles, was lifting weights regularly, etc. A series of disastrous personal situations and choices really did a number on me - emotionally and physically. I'm committed to recovery in both those areas.

Hi ladies. I'm what we call a re-tread in the Corp. (been here, done this before & back) I am prob not the only sparkler who sizzled out & had to relight! This food mind game is baffling. Today feelin good! Busy with a great life of fam, friends & tennis matches. Happy to be sparkin again. It's the only way to stay on track for me. My own efforts make a mess of it all! I'm Martha in the Pacific Northwest. After a couple of rounds of cancer (breast, cervical), I want to get in as good shape as possible to prevent or fight off whatever comes at me next. Let's do this!

Hi, Anita! I lived in Alabama for 20 years, and know it is very hard to lose weight with all that amazing food and a culture that doesn't emphasize exercise. Good for you!

Hi, I'm Anita from Alabama. After being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in August 2014, I changed my lifestyle and began getting healthy. I currently control my diabetes with exercise and "diet" only - no meds! I've actually lost 110 lbs. but I am down to losing that last pesky 18 to reach my goal of 150 (from the starting point of 273).
