HI Diane,
you're really smart to nip the gain while its still single digit. Good to keep busy, active. I plan on trying "paddle-board" with a buddy in July. Cant be too hard. I see older women on the ad's and they look fine, One had a dog in the back of the board emoticon
Good luck

Hi, my name is Diane. I am a 76 year old retired senior. I started SP in 2014 and had lost 68 pounds. I did very good my first year with SP. In my second year I started snacking. Since February of this year the snacking has gotten out of control. I dont know why I am sabotaging myself but I need to stop. Ive regained 8 of the 68 pounds I lost. This means I now have 15 pounds to reach goal (150).
I find myself with too much time on my hands. I am learning to quilt. I also crochet/knit and do cross stitch. I am hoping the quilting will work to keep me busier.

Hi, Everyone- I have been on Spark before and came back today because I am finding these last 15 lbs. really hard to lose. I do pretty good all day but I find it really hard to stop the late night snacks. I am hoping that with the support of others and by tracking what I eat, I'll finally get to my goals. It's getting hot here in AZ - just about 115 degrees today. You would think the heat would diminish the appetite - not so I'm afraid emoticon Anyway, I'm glad to be part of this team and look forward to sharing with all of you.

HI I'm 55 and need to get to 157lbs. I was in the spring challenge (team emerald) and lost a bit but want to branch out. Days right now include the veggie garden, outside stuff (we live on 10 acres), my grandkids and daughter. They live nearby and work PT. I do plan most meals but boredom or procrastinating leads me to eat.
My goal is to be at 170 b4 Hawaii end of the year emoticon

Greetings to all you inspiring people! I am in Canada where beautiful weather has finally arrived, needing to get back on the straight and narrow. I lost 35 pounds four years ago, and 8 have crept back on just recently. Hoping to lose 13 to make the total 40 and then try to stay there. Love the feeling of being fit and strong, and YES it is possible after 50. I'm now 62 and need some swift kicks in what I hope will be a re-shrinking derriere. Too much sitting sitting sitting over the past year...

Hi, I'm Dorthy. I'm about halfway through this journey to lose the first 17 pounds. When I complete this step I will try to lose another 15 pounds.

I've been married to my college sweetheart for 40 years and have 2 sons. I love walking and hate exercise. Love pasta and prefer to ignore most vegetables.

I have decided to give Spark People another try. I lost 20 pounds using Spark People about five years ago...Unfortunately, they are now back plus 10...Would be happy losing 5 pounds a year instead of gaining 10...I am on prednisone until tomorrow...so I will start focusing on eating right Sunday...

I joined a gym and have been doing weighlifting one day along with 30 minutes of cardio and then 60 minutes of cardio another day since January and have lost only 3 pounds. I am very frustrated...Maybe logging food here will help.

TrishP115..My one day goal..

Hi I'm a newbie. I have lost 75 pounds, but this last ten is giving me grief. At 5'8" I got a range of 122-164 as optimal. My BMI is good. I hate to exercise but am working toward 10,000 steps with FitBit Alta. I have osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia so have been a coach potato for too long.

You're right that media, fashion and our culture bends toward "young, thin = beautiful". But I think we need to not care what others say is beautiful. We need to define that for ourselves. I completely understand how difficult that is - I've spent much of my life fighting the battle. But at 64 I think I've defined beauty for myself and it rarely has to do with looks.
Not to say I don't still struggle. But when I take a breath in the middle of all the noise I know that I'm the one that determines whether I'm good enough or not.

I'm 64 and pretty healthy. My weight has been creeping back up over the last 2 years. I've got 25 pounds to lose and I'm overwhelmed at having to do this yet again in my life. But I'm willing to try. I've never used message boards before but after reading an article today and realizing that doing this without support isn't very pleasant. I'm diving in.

Hello
I turned 50 in September and didn't realize that your body will start doing its own thing at this age!! I joined SparkPeople in '09 and with it lost 100 lbs! But in the past 2 years, because of injuries and body changes, I have gained back 30 of those pounds! So I am here trying to stay/regain my motivation and lose those pounds and more. I'm at 208 now, but my long term goal is to be under 170. I'm having to learn to eat differently and in different quantities now that I am older. I eat pretty clean 80% of the time. But my portions are way off. I exercise roughly 4-6 times a week, but am not able to have the intensity I once had because of some injuries to my shoulder, hand and knee. I know it will take time. Unfortunately, I'm not good at waiting or changing! Thank you in advance for any and all help you guys can give.
Thank you for being here :)

Hi,

I'm Nancy from cold and still snowy Michigan. I'm 59 years old, happily married for 39 years and grandmother to 10 wonderful grandchildren.

I'm a late in life runner, very active and watch what I eat. This past year, I've put on 15 lbs, which is a lot on my small frame. I'm trying to change things around and hopefully get back into my summer clothing before it warms up here.

Hoping to jump my slow metabolism back into gear!

Hi all! This is my second go round at SP. Last time was 10 years ago when I was a new mom! The weight has crept back up over the years and although I have stayed more active than before (I am running 3-5 miles 4x a week) I feel like my metabolism has changed at 50 and I once more need to count my calories. It was so successful for me last time around. I would like to loose 10-12 pounds.

Thanks for the warm welcomes! I live in Florida, 61 with 20 pounds to lose. Struggle with exercise due to needing a hip replacement that I hope to put off for another 4 years. If I exercise a lot, I will pay in pain the next few days. I know SparkPeople works, I'm coming back after a few years.

Hi, This is a first for me - both joining a weight loss program and sharing it. I'm 65, retired early ten years ago and weight has gone up by at least a kilo a year. I got to 100kg, had a pulmonary embolism a year ago and now trying to avoid a repeat. Need meds to control high blood pressure so weight loss should help too. Now 94.5kg. and first goal is to get down to retirement weight 85kg. Used to run regularly until wear and tear of calf muscles resulted in severe cramps after just ten mins. Haven't found an exercise routine to replace running so sort of gave up and just dipped in and out with occasional burst of enthusiasm for gym or cycling but didn't change my eating habits. Result is where I am now, which I am trying to put right. I've uploaded "before" photos to my Sparkpage so I know I have to keep this going.

Greetings and palpitations, everyone! I'm Jerry. My 60th birthday is coming up later this year. None of us know how many of those landmarks we have left, and I would like to make the most of however many are allotted to me. Until about 8 years ago, I was in decent physical condition: I could run (super slowly) 4 or 5 miles, was lifting weights regularly, etc. A series of disastrous personal situations and choices really did a number on me - emotionally and physically. I'm committed to recovery in both those areas.

Hi, I'm Anita from Alabama. After being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in August 2014, I changed my lifestyle and began getting healthy. I currently control my diabetes with exercise and "diet" only - no meds! I've actually lost 110 lbs. but I am down to losing that last pesky 18 to reach my goal of 150 (from the starting point of 273).

I'm Julie. Mother of 2 daughters. Nanna to 2 with a third on the way in August. I'm 53 years young. I have about 5kgs or 10lbs to go. While it doesn't seem a lot, my back and knees are suffering. I'm a breast cancer survivor of 4.5 years now and have managed to keep the weight down. But after healing my body, my mind had a breakdown leaving me tired, depressed and lethargic. Everyday cancer free is fantastic. I have been reading SP blogs for awhile and decided to join instead of being on the edge!

I have used SparkPeople before so I am familiar with the site. I just need to start following a plan that will see real results.
My Name is Marilyn. I am 61 years old. I am single. My husband died in December of 2010. My oldest son died in March 2014. I have 3 adult children and 7 grandchildren. I was diagnosed with diabetes in 2006 when I had a heart attack. The tiny capillaries that feed the heart are blocked so unable to do surgery. I have an implantable defibrillator in my chest just in case I have another heart attack. I just say the cardiologist and he is pleased that we have finally got my medications doing what they are supposed to do to help me avoid complications from different issues I have had. My goal is to start getting the exercise I need to get stronger and to start eating a heart healthy diet. I don't have anyone to hold me accountable and that is what I really need.

Marilyn Kay

I can do this!

PATH1140, I wish you the best with not creeping back up again. 200 is my current target, too. I am losing 20 pounds right now. Then I will pause for a while before losing another 20, then pause, then another twenty. At least that is my plan at the moment.

55 year old male. Started on SP at 230 lbs with a target of 200. Down to 213 at last weigh in so I thought I'd move teams.

200 lbs is still a little overweight for me so I'll probably want to lose a bit more eventually. I would just like to pause and reassess at 200.

Last time I counted calories I got down to my current weight, stopped counting calories, and then slowly added the weight back on. Hopefully I won't bounce up again.

Hello, It is refreshing to belong to a group of +50 healthy minded persons. My name if Claire and I am finally ready to get my weight and health under control after years and years of procrastination and distorted self image. I am coming from the fashion industry and as we all know magazines and general public opinion of beauty encourage extra slim and young =beautiful and if you over 50 then we are almost dead. My mind is young but my body looks old and I want to do the right thing towards healthy fitness and eating. I also want to encourage more +50 to break this image of being obsolete, we are not. If only society could accept us for what we bring will us in valuable information and experience and not just external appearances emoticon . Take care and hope to get feedback. My biggest ? now is where do I begin. Claire

53 year old man with 60 pounds to lose, but right now I only care about 20 of those pounds. That is about 10% of my weight, and when I get there I will stop trying to lose for a little while, I think, before I taken the next chunk of weight. -- Does anybody have any experience doing it that way?

I'm glad that the internet makes it possible to talk with people in the same boat as me. Best of luck to all of you!

Mike here, just turned 50... All the beer over the years has finally caught up with me. Found this site simply looking for a source to educate me on eating right and loosing the beer gut. Appears to be a decent site with some good peeps giving some good advice and support.
Remember the day you finally said enough?...that was two days ago for me. Mama always said I was a slow learner ;)

Cheers.

Hello My Name Is Patty and I have been struggling with weight for a long time .. I am now the most I have ever weighed , and need to loose at least 30 pounds to feel better. I recently had some changes in my life that led me to overeating and I gained 10 pounds over the summer. I am having a very hard time to get rid of these extra pounds. I have been on SP a few times but have not stayed on the program long enough to make a difference. I hope to change this around and loose some of this excess weight .. I am 57 years old and stand at 5'1" and am at 164 currently and on that smaller frame body type that is a lot of extra weight.
I look forward to using this board to the fullest and may we all succeed in what seems to be a
"forever" battle ... emoticon

Hi all, I am LInda, 54. I've never had problems with my weight, as I used to stay very active. About a year ago, I was diagnosed with Malignant Hypertensive Disorder, and suffered some heart damage, due to how high my blood pressure rose. I'm currently at 152 lbs. I've recently lost 16 pounds, and am looking to lose another 20. I've turned to Spark as a way to hold myself accountable. I would welcome anyone who would like to "buddy up", for support and accountability. Definitely seems that it's harder to drop the weight as we get older, but I am committed. I got married nine months ago, and my husband is working in Afghanistan. I need to stay busy to keep from going crazy, and getting fit seems to be a good way to go!

Hi, everyone. I turned 50 over the summer and I just joined this team. I am a SP "old timer" - since 2007 - and I reached my goal weight a few times since then. I also regained a few times. In fact, this is my problem; the "yoyo syndrome" some call it. I don't seem to be able to maintain... emoticon
Fortunately, SP helps me every time to get back to a 'normal' BMI. emoticon
I lost 80 lbs last year but I regained some, so here I am again... emoticon As I am sure you must know, getting older makes it more difficult to drop the pounds though so I need to find a way to succeed a MAINTENANCE!

Hello Everyone,
I am not happy I NEED to be here but boy oh boy am I happy to be here! Does that make sense? Sparkpeople works for me but I've been MIA for too, too long. So with 50 literally right around the corner, a marriage proposal also right around the corner, I needed and wanted to make some changes to feel better and, vainly, to LOOK better. So, here I am Ladies emoticon

The time is here to make things happen!

Hi, I am just one week in on this journey. I need to lose 10 kilos and have struggled to lose this weight now for a few years. I eat a really healthy diet anyway, due to a lot of food intolerances, particularly to wheat, corn and processed food in general. I have found it really frustrating as there is very little food to cut out. And wondering if it is all a lot harder now that I am in my mid 50's. But.....I am determined to win this battle this time! Walking and exercising more and tracking all my food and water! I will win!!

Good morning! I am giving spark people another try. A few years back I embraced a healthy lifestyle - lost weight, got fit, even ran 2 half marathons. I felt and looked good. The past few years have been stressful. I recently moved and started a new job. In the process my eating habits are terrible and my activity is almost nonexistent. I reach for my best buddy - food to help me distress. I know what I have to do I just cant seem to get motivated to do it. Hoping today is THE DAY for my new start. I am looking forward to support from others to help me through.

Hi, all. My name is Susan and I'm 61 and live in Virginia. I've been on Spark People for a few years, since my trainer recommended it to me. In 2010 I was 260 lbs (I'm 5' 2"). Since then I've lost approximately 110 lbs. But I've been unable to lose those last 20-25 lbs. I do strength training 2-3 days a week and cardio 5-6 days a week, but have been unable to get the weight down. I am finding it very hard now to lose even 1 pound. I also have developed arthritis and a knee issue, preventing me from running or doing high impact, so it's a little harder now to do cardio as well.

I have been an SP subscriber for a while for the exercise videos, but am looking for the right support group to keep me on track to actually lose the weight. I'm out of work right now and the summer has been scattered--no routine and not much time to myself. I got enough exercise and lost a little, but I'm hoping to speed it up a little bit. Now at 170 (as of Monday morning) and hoping to get to 154 or so. 148 would be ideal, but we'll see how hard 154 is first!

And I'm 54 years old. I used to run, at least for months at a time. Never a marathoner, just 5K's upon occasion. But I broke my ankle in May, and am still working on getting it completely healed. I can walk for miles, but running seems like a bad idea. I'm a member of the Y these days, so that's helpful. But the food is by far the bigger issue!

Is Monday the weigh-in day for this group?

welcome....my story similar....very active and then BAM....all came to hault.....weight piled on. Now on the healthy track and nearly back to normal. SP exercise videos has been very helpful for me. Writing down what you eat in a day is also key....you find out lots when doing that...LOL. If you are able to walk....good for you physically, and mentally. Oh, and drinking the dreaded water is very important, too. I go to dr very soon and will let you know if the above is working for me. I feel it is. That darn weight is SO much easier to pile on than take off. Good luck on your venture. stay in touch.

Happy Labor Day Weekend!

I have had shingles since mid July. Being single, I have not eaten appropriately as cooking just seemed like too much trouble, and being unable to exercise, I have gained 17 pounds. Evidently food was my comfort thru this period of time. emoticon I am determined to get back to my previous weight and rebuild the strength that I have lost.

So happy to have some support here!

I too have been on SP for a while. I had been sick and lost A LOT of weight. Before getting sick, I was very over weight. I had decided that I was going to be that weight the rest of my life. After losing so much, I had hoped not to gain it back. Slowly it came back on. I am now 24 lbs over what I consider my ideal weight. I have held where I am for a few months now. I want to lose the 24 lbs and hold there. I know I can't do it myself. I think your tools will help. I just hope I won't loose where and how to use them.

I've been getting emails from SP for a year or more, but never created a profile or connections until today. Although I lost 15 lbs a year ago (slowly, through portion control), I need a little more accountability to tackle the next hurdle. I planned to lose another 5 -- but this summer I developed A-fib, and the cardiologist said, "I want you to weigh what you did 40 years ago (after college)." Um - no! I was underweight! So we compromised with 145 lbs. I am 5'9" so that sounded healthy... and it's what I weighed between my two babies. So - that gives me a target loss of 25 pounds. Frankly, I'll be happy with 15 -- but my "fighting spirit" has been awakened and there is a piece of me that says, "I'll show you!" Step one: start tracking food and see what I'm eating.

Hi....Sorry for your loss. I too, am caregiver for my husband in w/c with MS. I know all too well the demands that caregiving takes. My situation is slightly different in that I don't work outside the home but must stay in close contact with the house in case of emergency. In meantime, my knee wore out and as result all exercise came to screeching halt for many months until surgery. Needless to say.....depression set in, all kinds of mindless eating and no way to burn off the added calories. However, things looking brighter.....now 7 weeks post op and although stamina is still slow going I decided to make efforts with SP to connect with others in same boat trying to get into shape. A helpful tool is the exercise videos. I'm not cleared yet to return to gym. I'll bet you can find a few you can work up a sweat doing. So, guess what I am saying is checking in every morning with SP and reading some motivation articles have been very helpful. Best advise? Just keep moving.....good luck to you

Hello everyone. I have been on SparkPeople off and on for several years. Unfortunately, in 2011, I became a caregiver for my husband after he suffered a stroke. This was in addition to working fulltime. My husband subsequently passed away this past September and I have been trying so hard to get back into exercising. I've been told that it really helps in the grieving process. Thankfully, I eat pretty good most of the time, so I haven't really gained a lot of weight since my husband's death. The scale hasn't moved much, but some of the clothes that I was able to wear previously are too tight now. I really need to get some kind of consistency because on the few days that I have worked out since last September, I felt good after the workout. Compounding everything is the fact that where I live is very isolated. I live on 8.17 acres and am the only house on a 3.5 mile stretch of road. I don't like to walk on the road because of the isolation. I work 86 miles from where I live so doing stuff after work is out of the question if I want to get home at a reasonable hour. I guess I am hoping that maybe some accountability here with help give me the consistent desire to actually exercise.

Hi all,

I heard about SparkPeople from an acquaintance at work. I've been looking for a tool to assist me with my current battle! My doctor recommended a tool, but to get the most out of it, I'd have to buy an iPhone, and that isn't happening!

Since mid-June, I've lost about 14 pounds, and have 18 more to go on my current plan. I actually am hoping to lose more, but I believe in setting smaller goals that are a little easier to attain.

Look forward to seeing you all here.

Eric

I couldn't help but notice your age weight relationship. I have done such a similar thing. It seems each decade my weight has gone up to the same minus 10! I am now pushing 60 and my weight is pushing 150! I have made the decision it will stop that nonsense now!! I am determined to get it back down at the very least to the low 140's and better yet into the 130's.
Good luck to you, good luck to me!!

New here. Did Nutrisystem with my husband last year. He lost 20 pounds, I lost 10. I have put 5 of them back on and would like them to go away...plus a few more. I have a son getting married in June and another son graduating from high school in June. Would like to look nice in the pictures.
When I turned 20, I weighed 120...30, I weighed 130...40, I weighed 140...50, I weighed 150..My goal is to turn 60 and weigh in the 120s or 130s...I have 5 years to get there...I can do it!

Hi to all I'm a Newbie around here and just sort of poking around to see what's what. I'm 58 years young and want to continue to maintain my good health. I have allowed my weight to creep up and muscle tone to creep down a bit too much over the last several years. It is time to rectify that situation! I'm hoping by joining here I will be more motivated and play into accountability. I'm looking to lose at least 10 of these extra 20 pounds I'm carrying and hopefully get a little less jiggle in my body! Wishing me and all of you well!

Hi JSMITH165....I also have been on SP several years and didn't do anything seriously until about a week ago. In same boat as you, at my all time highest weight.....and also so easily discouraged to fall back into same ole pitfalls. 21 days to make something new become a habit.....I have been told. Am making a special effort to sign in every day and do the free spin on the start page. Still learning how to record and keep track of nutrition and exercise. Another thing I have found which has been helpful for me......I clicked on Videos for sit down exercises. (11 minute sit down cardio and 11 minute core strength) I am recovering from TKR surgery three weeks ago and moving about is slow going at this point. Came to the conclusion I need to stick with more age appropriate exercises ......elliptical, recumbent biking and rowing.....not boot camp stuff!.... and not try to do what the 30 yr olds do at the gym (although I know I can do it the aging joints don't seem to like that). Concentrating on drinking 8 glasses of water each day is extremely helpful in curbing the appetite......as well as keeping your mind busy not munching. Squeezing lemon in the water makes it taste better, too. I am also trying to make a habit of walking outdoors twice a day. Last night I finally made it the 1/2 mile around our circle....YAY. Again, walking too slow to burn many calories but something about walking clears my head. No music.....just talk to myself...problem solve, etc. Next week moving up to next level and going to make use of our community salt water pool. If you need encouragement I'll be here. good luck

Hello

I'm looking for inspiration and encouragement to lose 20 plus pounds that are slowing me down and hurting my back and knees. Joined Sparkpeople years ago but have never maintained tracking for more than two weeks. I really need to get serious or my pain will only get worse and I know it will be so easy for me to just give up and sit in front of the TV and stuff my face. So here I am.

Have an Awesome Day!

Thanks so much for the words of advice! I definitely need to concentrate on drinking more water! It is such an easy thing to do, but for some reason I forget. Since I started tracking my calories this week, I also am shocked as to how many I was eating. Making healthier choices this week has definitely helped keep me fuller without adding all the calories.
Best of luck with your TKR recovery. I used to be an x-ray tech for an orthopedic surgeon and have seen many many patients in your situation! Keep up the therapy and you will be well on your way!!

Hi Carolyn....I can relate to your goal. I too struggle with weight loss. In the past going to the gym knocking myself out why I wonder are the pounds not falling off me. And, then I begin writing down what I put into my mouth.....holey smokes!! No wonder I fail....by nights end I have mindlessly consumed a boat load of calories. A bite here, a handful there and it all adds up. So what helps me is to write it down or click on food intake on SP which I am trying to get used to doing. Another thing that helps me in the past with weight loss......the dreaded water drinking. I know that is a challenge for many of us but if you squeeze some lemon juice into it that makes it better to consume. I also think it helps the interior "plumbing" in some way. I am recouperating from knee replacement surgery and so eager to get into gear to shed these unwanted pounds and begin to feel better. Someone brought to my attention about watching the fitness videos and I intend to work with this as best as I can until I have better movement in my knee. Another thing that helped me in the passed was to walk 4 miles a day in one hour. good luck

Hi! I'm Carolyn. I am 52 years old and live in Alaska. I am a grandmother of one, with one on the way. I have yo-yo dieted my entire adult life, and finding it a real struggle to lose any weight since I turned 50. My goal is to develop better habits of eating healthy and exercising daily. Hopefully these habits will produce some results of weight loss, better mood, more energy and less aching.

Hi Grace, I am 73, when I turned 72 I began to lost my final weight through a program www.foodaddictsinrecovery.org

I went from 186 down to 158 in 90 days, after that I kept losing til within a year I was 135 and wearing a size 10 petite down from xlarge when I began.

I had been with the TOPS program and used sparkpeople.com for years (2009-2013) to record date. Kept yo yoing. Finally had to admit I was a food addict using the flour and sugar products to calm me and reward me. I was walking two miles/day, took trips, gained lost. Now I am maintaining my weight loss and want to lose 10 more lbs to weigh 125. I have shrunk from 5'6" to 5'3" have osteopenia for which I take Vit D3 2000 iu/day; my anxiety pill has been eliminated, my thyroid pill is down to 100 mcg where it used to be higher, my cholesterol med has been reduced, my blood pressure pill has been reduced, I do take supplements and found that Biotin has kept my hair from falling out plus it strengthened my nails, I take a multivitamin for women 50+, and I do take a diuretic. So far blood work every 6 mos is good. So, it can be done even though we hit menopause, get fragile, etc. Very glad to have found this special blog. Thanks to you and all the others for posting. Nancy emoticon

Hi everyone! My name is Grace....just turned 52 and would love to lose 20 pounds. But losing just one pound is a struggle for me and I need help and motivation! I've been on SP for years. Leaving, returning...you all know that feeling I'm sure. Hoping this team will give me the motivation I need 😃

Hi Mary
In 48 hours I will be in for TKR and am looking forward to getting back to "normal" and can begin moving around with ease. Already got my walking odometer ready to count my 10,000 steps. Encouraging to hear positive results from having new knee. Good luck on your journey

Hello - I noticed info about this team on another message - so glad I found you. Been a member of SP for several years, love the information I garner from this site, it is awesome and a blessing..

I have been battling releasing 15-20 lbs for the past few years. I follow W/W in my points+ amount and yet the scale does not move. Exercise has been sporadic - daily accountability would be welcome...

Thanks.
