Hello -- My name is Maura and I'm new to sparkpeople and am currently just trying to navigate the site and make use of the wonderful healthy lifestyle and weight loss tools. I've been a yo-yo dieter my entire life and I'd like to graduate to a long term healthy lifestyle. I worked so hard last year but have unfortunately regained the 20 pounds I worked so hard to lose. Looking forward to the challenge. 2 good days in a row!

I was a member years ago. So many years ago that I had forgotten my user name and password. My email had also changed. So, I just made a new SparkPeople page.

A little about myself: I am 63 years old, married with 12 children between my husband and I. I love biking and just bought a new Schwinn SuperSport 3. I also attend a Barre class where I am getting my toning exercises. Zumba is also a passion.

Hello. My name is Tim and I'm a stay at home dad with a 3 year old. My current weight is 198 lbs. In November of 2010 I weighed 360 pounds. I had a slight set back a year ago and gained 15 of those pounds back, going up to 205-210 lbs. and stuck there for the longest time. I am taking a nutrition and health class and have learned a lot from my mistakes in weight loss. I had no idea that eating the right foods and eating 500 more calories a day would kick my 9 month plateau in the butt. Since March 5th I have dropped from 210 to 198 lbs. My short term goal is 190 lbs @15 -18% Body fat by August. By January 2015 I am working towards 185 @ 11-15% Body fat. One of my favorite quotes is from one of the Rocky movies; If you don't believe in yourself, you ain't gotta life. I walk/run 6 days a week and lift moderately 3 days a week. I'm new here so the way to go about finding friends is a little bit of a mystery still. I hope everyone has a great day.

I'm Sandi and I live in Ohio. I've been here about a month and I am still trying to find my way around here. My husband and I work out at a local gym three days a week and I'm still having trouble losing weight. We will be in Myrtle Beach next month for nine days. We have two small dogs so we spend alot of time walking them when we are on vacation.

Hi,
I tried Spark years ago and need to get back into it. After retiring and relocating to the Myrtle Beach area I have put on all the weight I had lost in getting ready for the move. I need to change my eating habits and get back into exercising on a daily basis. Plus my dog has been diagnosed with an incurable disease and has become diabetic so I find I eat due to the stress of his illness. My husband also needs to lose weight so I'm hoping to find some great recipes here so he will join me in this.
Need support and look forward to hearing the best way for us older people to drop those pounds.
Amy

Hi! My name is Jean and I'm new to Sparkpeople! I want to lose about 30 pounds which I have gained in the last 4 years. I used to be very active but after I started dating my husband, we did nothing but eat and eat and eat....hence the weight gain. I was also in a motorcycle accident last year which injured my left leg so working out can be tricky. I'm depressed..I binge...I get more depressed...just don't know where to start. Hoping to find support with this group!

Hi everyone....I'm Trisha...I joined SP in January and just found this team while reading a members blog. I have 15 lbs. to my goal weight but I really joined SP to make some friends here who I can relate with and support me in enjoying life. Because of illness I have isolated myself over the years and lost touch with others and have become very sedate. I realized I needed to get back to living a full life and hope to find others to share my life with. I find tracking hard because I cook for one and usually I just throw things that I feel like eating together and see what comes out of the pot. I found following a recipe too difficult because I would have left over portions to eat for three or four days afterwards and I find I don't like frozen leftovers much. I am trying to prepare to partake in my first 5K marathon and I have been walking on my treadmill to get me to the point where I can walk it and now I am working on being able to run the distance. I can run 4 blocks as long as my foot is good. A couple of weeks ago I sprained my tendon on the ball of my foot and had to stay completely off it for over a week before I could walk on it again. I still feel it when I walk for any distance so I haven't been able to get back into jogging yet.

To me HEALTH means Energy. Stamina. Flexibilty. A relatively pain free body. Enjoying healthy food. You are your body, and your weight loss efforts will succeed exactly to the extent that you mange to do the work on behalf of your embodied self. You’ll do much better when you focus on making positive changes to improve your health and well-being, rather than on fighting your bad habits.

Hi Everyone, My name is Dianna. I have been battling my weight all my life and sometimes with a lot of success. I have gained a lot of my weight back again--an old story and I really need to lose it again to be healthy. I am approaching my 64th. birthday this summer and I want to be able to enjoy my senior years and not have to end up having someone to care for me due to my neglect. I have some health issues due to my excess weight and if I can drop at least 30 pounds I am sure I will feel a lot better, not to mention look a lot better. Currently I weigh about 210 pounds give or take a couple depending on the day.

Hello everyone,
I am Wendy, a 58 year old teacher. I had found after doing my work, I was always too busy or exhausted to take care of myself (I thought). The weight kept creeping up. I weighed 162 and my goal is 135. I started the Suzanne Sommers sexyforever.com eating plan on March 1st, and really like it. However, I needed something for encouraging and tracking my fitness levels, so I found SP, which seems to meet that need. I had started losing weight on the SS diet, reached a plateau and realized I needed to work fitness into the equation. So here I am. I am so happy because I am actually seeing results! I am down to 156 today, 6 lbs since I started at the beginning of this month! The inches are coming off too. I am also feeling like I have more energy than I used to have before I started eating more healthy. Sometimes I feel like I'm too tired or it's too late to go to the gym after work. Then, I go anyway, and I see all kinds of people there, working out and having a good time. I end up having more energy for the rest of my day. I appreciate the SP community of support that is here whenever I need you to keep going with my plan. Thank you!

Hi All. I'm Pam (SensoryFoodie, which I am), and I've been on SP for almost three weeks now (really 2.5). I found it after a night of major overeating and deciding I WASN'T going to pay Weight Watchers for getting a community of support, the major thing I needed. So I found SparkPeople. How lucky! So I've been working the program and slowly growing in it. This is my first introduction to this team, the team I chose that represents me: I'm 52.5, a former yoga teacher who has just gotten her Masters in Counseling Psychology, who has moved back to her state of origin and wants to find a job working with kids. I'm also an artist who has seen some recent success and who is growing in her art. My goal is to get to 115, if it works for me, and to own it and keep it. I am not tracking lbs but inches. I stepped on the scale at KMart and three different scales gave me three different readings. Depressing and confusing!

Never mind the scale, Deborah!
You made some great decisions last week. Your body is adjusting to the increase activity level, you're making better food choices without giving up the treats you both like and deserve. One day at a time. The positive results are just out in front of you. Carpe Diem.

Hello, Deborah here, happily married with 2 grown up children- I really would love to lose 20 pounds before the summer hits us, but am going to be realistic, and have set myself a 10 pounds target by mid May- I would be so very happy to do that and feel I will then be spurred on to chip away at the next ten- I had a brilliant week last week, sticking to a very sensible eating plan, exercising most days and drinking a lot of water - Yay! I had a couple of glasses of wine over the weekend but stuck within my allotted calories- However, the scales haven't moved at all- I am disappointed because I tried so hard and stuck with it- I promise myself to be amazing again this week and hope that I manage to shed a pound or two - Fingers are crossed

Hello,
My name is Robert. I am a happily married 51 year old with 5 children. SparkPeople is great isn't it? Since joining last November I have lost 11 pounds. I've been working out 3 times a week with free weights. In addition, I run for 2 miles, 3 times a week. I hope to lose 50 pounds this year. It's my wish to become as fit as possible for my age, height, etc. Hope to make some friends here as well.
peace

Hello everyone,

My name is Nyla. I am 63, live in Texas (Houston). I was widowed about 6 months ago but have 4 wonderful kids (2 step-kids and 2 biological, but all were "ours" and now "mine"). Have 6 grandkids with #7 due in September. I was at my desired weight and then my husband was diagnosed, had treatment and then passed away. SOOO, I regained a bunch of weight, LOST a bunch of fitness and now want to take care of me so that I can enjoy the kids and grandkids in good health for the next 30 or 40 years….. I need to lose about 20 pounds from where I am now (have lost about 12 since the 1st of the year). I also need to add some stretching (my hip flexors are REALLY giving me fits--probably due to how sedentary I have been for the last 2+ years) and some strength training.

I look forward to getting to know you all.

Nyla

Hi Everyone my name is Patty. I'm 51 and working on losing 20-25 pounds. I started the year eating better but the pull of sugar is so strong it's a struggle. I'm looking for motivation to keep working toward my vision and stop the yo-yo weight game. Glad to find this team it looks very active.

I'm here for the second time around also. I'm 61, My name is
Gail and I have a little more to lose than 24 pounds. But don't kick me out for that reason. Ha! I have very little will power especially when it comes to exercise. I hate it. My husband and I are both retired, and we are both lacking in willpower. He has some physical limitations, so He can't exercise much. We spend a lot of time together, so I feel guilty when I leave him alone to go exercise. Silly I know. It is so hard to lose weight when you're my age. I need help, and encouragement. And maybe along the way I can be an encouragement to others on team, I glad to be back.

Hello new teammates! This is my second time around with Spark. I lost about 20 pounds and over the last three years, I have gained it all back. emoticon

I am 51 and married. I teach middle school. I love it! Those kids are not right, but they are so much fun to work with. Even with all the changes with common core and evaluations, I still enjoy each day. emoticon

I also volunteer for Relay for Life and spend as much time as I can with a special niece and nephew. I have my motorcycle permit and want to get my license this summer. Then I can ride my scooter to Curves!

I know I can be successful with the help and support of Spark!

Hi. I am 60 and never had a real weight problem. Lately the scale has been creeping up. Found out that I have an underactive thyroid, but not bad enough for medicine, so I am trying to get my weight back to where is has been for the last 30-40 years. I am trying to lose 10-15 pounds so that I don't have to buy all new clothes! I live in PA about 30 miles NE of Pittsburgh. Any others near there?

Hello Everyone!!! I am a 63 year old female and I'm so tired of losing the same 10-15 pounds over and over just to find it again! Have dieted all of my life and dropped from my heaviest weight of 178 pounds to a more reasonable weight of 150 pounds over 20 years ago. Just keep battling continually. I have certainly earned the title of Chronic Dieter. I've done all kinds of stupid diets like the grapefruit diet, the cabbage soup diet, the no carb diet and other desparate acts of starvation that do not promoter good health. As I've gotten older I have chosen healthier dieting. Have been member of Weight Watchers and South Beach Diet. Several months ago, hubby and I joined Nutrisystem (he has lost 25 pounds, I have lost 2 pounds. Is that a joke or what? His loss is because he actually eats "normal" serving sizes now.) I've been cooking "healthy" for years due to problems with high cholesterol and pancreatitis induced diabetes. So further changes are hard for me. Looking forward to browsing this site and learning how all of you manage to keep on keeping on.

I am 56 and as I see for others posting, I to have been battling my weight for about 25 years. I'm a forester and when I first started working I would gain a little weight in the winter time and look good in the summer when I was in the field. Now seniority brings a desk job! I have no excuse, however, for not getting healthy. I live in an area that has mountains, forests, lakes, rivers, and streams. I love to hike, swim, and camp. My difficulties are maintaining a healthy lifestyle. I am hoping this site (SparkPeople) will help me with this.

I know God will not give me anything I can't handle. I just wish that He didn't trust me so much.

Hello everyone! I am so excited to have come across this wonderful site! I am 51 years young and engaged to my high school sweet heart! (both of us divorced from previous long term marriages) I have always been interested in healthy living, but turning 50 and finding my Romeo, truly opened my eyes and mind. I am ready to start my new life! Happy, healthy, and full of love! I would appreciate any encouragement and new ideas on my new journey! Also, would love to reciprocate!

Good morning! I am 56, fairly new to SP. Consider myself a lifelong-professional dieter who has let my focus slip since a back injury a year ago. Feeling sorry for myself, I have allowed my food issues to take over and have been sitting around waiting to feel better. Well, last week I decided enough is enough and ordered my Spark activity tracker. So far, so good. Back up walking on treadmill and making better food choices. Watching the wine. So here we go! Looking forward to the year ahead!!

Great job DEANNROM! Whatever you're doing keep up the good work! emoticon

Hi everyone. I’m 52 years old and I've been an on again off again Spark People member for about 4 years. I'd like to either lose 10 - 15 pounds or gain some of that weight in muscle and at the same time lose the fat. :) So I don’t particularly care what the scale says, I just know I’m carrying around too much fat for my own comfort. And too little muscle. I've always been a pretty high energy person, but am noticing that energy going down a bit in recent years.

My weight normally stays pretty much the same, although I have to constantly monitor myself to make sure I don’t gain. I logged back into the site this past weekend after my jeans got too tight from my yearly 5 pound winter weight gain.

I think this time I have the motivation to stick with a plan. I find myself wanting to make good food choices and although I not terribly enthusiastic about the exercise part, I plan to get in a few minutes each day. I know I need the strength training as well as cardio.

Fall seven times, get back up eight,
Forgive yourself.

Hi, I am 66 years old. I only have about 20 pounds that I want to lose. I say only, but it is very difficult to change my eating habits. I've been in WW for a couple years now. My first WW year I lost 10 pounds. Then thru last July I lost another 10, but it crept up in the Fall with vacations and stayed on thru the holidays. I joined a meetup.com group where I learned about SparkPeople. The group has disbanded but I would like to explore more of SparkPeople. Feeling pretty good today. On December 18 WW weigh in, I was 174.6. This morning my bathroom scale said 169.0. Hooray! Finally I am headed down again.

Happy 2014!

I'm new to this SparkTeam, though not new to Spark People (joined in 2009). I look forward to hearing from you! It has been awhile since I ventured out to try a new team and thought this looked like a really great team.

I am one of those people who loves fitness activities but also loves to eat! I am looking forward to sharing my stories and hearing about yours. In most weeks, I do some activity almost ever day of the week. I especially like going to the gym because my friends make it fun. I love the outdoors and for 2014 I hope to hike a bit more on the weekends - did some last year but aiming for a little more. I eat a lot too and hope in 2014 to find it in myself to fill myself with healthy foods and better balance my plate.

I live with my DH, still work full time and have 2 grown daughters who live about an hour away.

I have been with SP for quite awhile, but just decided to join a group. I really am not sure how much I will be here, but I will be trying my best! My main goal is to create healthier habits and enjoy the weight loss that will automatically come with it. I have a goal set... Another 11 pounds to go, but that is a soft goal. It may change. I use SP, spark recipes, skinny taste, organize yourself skinny, and MFP. Once I get down to a weight where I feel best... Maintenance is my biggest struggle.

Slow and steady!

If you take off some weight, fine, but right now I think you need exactly what you said, something to take your mind off of your pain. We are such a chatty bunch, that might help

Glad you are seeing a professional. I am sure your counselor will give you help, and maybe when you are ready, she/he, might refer you to some kind of a support group. I am sure your friends want to be supportive, but maybe your attitude will be the best for you in the long run, As you have said something else to think about.

Remember, one day at a time, in some times, one minute, one hour at a time.

God Bless

shrinkbug and Bonnie, thank you for your kind responses. Yes I used to come to this forum a while back. Re: my support systems, I have lots of friends who would gladly listen to me talk and cry, anytime. I choose not to bother them most of the time, instead I see a licensed counselor. Or I use facebook to share an occasional feeling, I just don't like to make a habit of doing this as I don't want to interfere with others' enjoyment of their own lives and hobbies. So anyway, thanks again. I believe I will take your suggestion to use the other chat forum here as well. A Fine Chat, was that it/ sounds good. In a way I'm not even sure of why I'm bothering to try and take off the stupid ten pounds I keep gaining and losing. Only that tracking my daily intake and reading articles and blogs on SP gives me something to take my mind off other things, on my days off. emoticon

I am so terribly sorry for your loss. I can't even get a grip on how devastated you most be.

I agree with Shrinkbug, I hope you are with a grieving support group for you and others who have experienced such a loss.

I have been coming on this introductory thread suggesting that the people here come to the A Fine 50+ Chat!!!. There are quite a few of us, and a lot of us are on the thread daily. Please come over and introduce yourself there, I know you will not be waiting too long for someone to talk to you. The thread is on this same team, so go to the team page and you should find us.

You are also welcome to join us.

Suzy,
This is that time of year when everything seems worse that it is. Yucky cold arctic vortex after the holiday season. After reading about your loss, I can just imagine your despair.
Hang in there!
Your loss is so recent.
Do you have anyone helping you through this loss? Do you have someone who will listen when you want/need/must talk about your Patrick?
Thinking of you -

hi. I decided to try SP again, had success in the past losing fifteen pounds. too bad I've regained ten. one of the reasons I left SP was that the message boards I tried to belong to, moved so slowly. Hardly ever a new post from anyone and seldom did I get any responses to mine. It was frustrating so I tried "dieting" on my own but wasn't very focused. Now my life has changed. It changed on 11/19/13 when my 29 yr old son was in a terrible motorcycle crash. He suffered horrific injuries, lived 33 hrs, then died. I am left with my daughter, my husband and my son's nine year old boy who fortunately lives nearby so we see him often. I lost my appetite for about two weeks but it returned with a vengeance. All I want to do is eat sleep and cry. However I have to keep myself together most of the time because I have a ft professional job in health care. I'm grieving terribly, cannot believe it happened, think maybe I will wake up and Patrick will be standing there saying Sorry mom it was a bad dream. The last thing I need on top of everything else is to gain more weight. Although it's only ten pounds or so, I seem to be on a bad eating spiral with the junk/fast food and eating way too much at one sitting.I'm afraid if I don't get a hold of this now, I will end up an obese depressed woman of 62. At least I can control one of those things.

Hello, I am 53 years young! I have struggled with my weight since I went through surgical menopause when I was 46 and gained 30lbs. That's a lot for a small person. I worked the South Beach program and lost 14 lbs. I have been stagnate since July. So I am really ready to try something new. I enjoying doing physical activities but find it hard to stay consistent with any exercise program, or outdoor activities such as riding bike, and walking. I like to quilt, and sew and cook. I enjoy riding my bike and going on motor cycle rides.

Hi everyone, I am 66 years old and had gastric bypass surgery in April of 2005. I weighed 509 lbs at that time and have lost over 300 pounds and kept it off but struggling to lose this last 20 lbs. My main problem is that my weight loss came from not eating enough and my metabolism slows rather quickly.

My head tells me not to eat to lose weight but my body is wired just the opposite so I get easily frustrated. It has taken diligence to keep this weight off for eight years and I am thankful for that but would love to be below 180 pounds so really working on that most of the time all you need is encouragement from others to keep you going even when having a bad time. emoticon I really believe that I can do this so I will keep trying.

Hi, I am 54 years young most days! I have struggled with my weight for years mostly due to stress, hormones and blood sugar issues. I am not diabetic, but must eat at times so I do not graze too much. I am usually very active and tend to compensate my eating with exercise, justifying my ability to eat and drink some wine! I have never tried the support on sparkpeople, but need to try something new. I would love to lose 15# at least for health appearance and less stress on my knees. emoticon I also self sabotage, not sure why...guess I do not think I am that overweight, but my BMI at 30 says otherwise!

Hello All,
My name is Cheryle. I am 55 1/2 years old. I have been up and down weight wise for the at least the past 10 years. I put on more weight once I reached menopause that has been extremely challenging to take off. I lost some weight, not sure how much, but then the holidays came and it was a food fest. I would love to take off 20 lbs.and be at a much healthier weight. I work as a secretary for a Jr. High school. I have 5 adopted children ranging in age from 14-22 at home. My main challenge is staying away from the pizza that my kids are constantly eating.

What doesn't kill you makes you stronger...

Greettings and Happy 2014 to All,

I'm new to this SparkTeam, though not new to Spark People. I return after a 1-yr. hiatus with the numbers on my scale headed north 19 lbs. Though no regrets or excuses. No time for that!

It feels really good to have made the decision to re-start my weight-loss challenge. And the SparkTeam family makes the process all the easier. Sorry to leave my former team, "50+ members with 25+ lbs. to lose," but so excited to join forces with you all. Looking forward to sharing our stories. emoticon

Glad to know you Bonnie and others.

We have a lot of work to do. I'm new here too. We need to forgive ourselves for the past screw ups and learn from our experiences. Have a plan this time, as our evil selves will try to derail us again and you must not fold! We also need to pat ourselves on the back for coming this far. Know why this time is the last time. We must find our backbone. Know this is not a diet or a boot camp and it is not that hard either. We just have to stand a little taller, be a little smarter, allow ourselves to have the confidence we know we've had in the past and duck when low hanging dangerous branches are in our way. Excuse yourself from the nay sayers. They have no clue what is good for you.

Plan, plan plan.... Kill off your former self and re- identify with a happier time and weight. Perhaps post an earlier picture of yourself as a profile at a better weight. I did this. One thing I also did, which I found hard was I took full responsibility for the excesses I over-indulged in for years leaving me miserable. I and only I, put that gun to my head. And now using all the Sparks resources available to me, I choose living healthy for the rest of my life instead of the alternative. I expect many of you are in the same boat. Let's put on our life preservers it's going to be a bumpy ride at times. My best, Holly emoticon

WELCOME ALL!!!

I am Bonnie, one of the co leaders of the A Fine 50+ Chat!!!.

I have been with Spark People for almost 6 years, and have benefitted so very much from being here.

As you can see by my tracker, I had more than 20 pounds to lose, but I put a goal to lose 20 pounds, and Spark People referred me to this thread. That was 5 years ago. The last three years, I have had a number of serious physical issues, and 3 major surgeries. With my history, before SP, I know that I would weigh about 400 pounds by now but with this thread and the people on it, I am doing much better, physically and mentally.

If you are interested, stop by and see us on the 50+ chat, you will find us to be a welcoming group, where we support each other, and make no judgments. We try to take things one day at a time, one small change at a time, We look at our journey as a lifestyle change, and not a diet. We have all pretty much found that being on a "Diet", also means being off a diet!

Have a great Sunday all.

Hi everyone, I'm Ani. I am a high school business education teacher in Miami, Florida. After 30 years in Corporate America, I chose to switch careers, thus sharing my passion for business to the next generation. I have two grown daughters and three beautiful grandkids.

For the past two years I've been stuck trying to lose the last ten pounds. I lose one to two pounds, only to gain them right back the following month. Also, exercising has taken a back seat (way in the back) and that has to change. My mom has never exercised a day in her life and was diagnosed with Alzheimer's last year and I recently had to place her in an Assisted Living Facility. I promised myself that I will do everything in my power to avoid my girls from going through this illness with me.

Hi everyone!

I'm 55, live in Virginia, USA, married, and mom of two grown daughters.

I teach middle school (math). I love my job.

I am tired of reaching my ideal weight and then, over the course of 12-18 months, creeping back to my "max" weight, about 15 pounds above my ideal (but technically still "healthy"). Why the heck do I do that?!

Right now, I want to lose 11 pounds and never regain more than five of those.

I think if I participate more on SparkPeople, it will strengthen my resolve and reenforce my improved habits.

Glad to join this team!

Hello All, My name is Holly and I have been in the Spark game since Feb 2013. I have dumped almost 55 pounds and Food Tracker is the key. I am a seasoned foodie into healthy alternatives to processed junk foods. I gave up overeating in favor of balanced smaller portioned meals. My favorite drink of choice is water and tea. When I began this journey I had an A1C of about 13 and now it is 5.2 so my diabetes is much better, as are other health areas of my life. The most exciting part is I can see my belly button and my shoes again. I can feel my ribs and I have exchanged my overweight depressed reclusive and negative personality in for a happier, more social, more positive and active self. Food does not control me and I have learned to put myself first above all else because if I don't take care of number one what else is there?

The reason I joined this group is that I only have about 24 pounds to go and I am refocusing on it since it seems to be a bit harder than the first amount. I am interested in the support I can give others and support I can use myself to get to my goal. I gave up all my excuses and am determined to make this a way of life not just a temporary fix. I look forward to working with you,
Holly emoticon

Hi my name is Lisa - I lost 30 pounds last year and have put 10 back on during the holidays. I would like to lose the 10 plus another 10 by June. I need to get back on the healthy eating that allowed me to lose the original 30 and also begin a new exercise regime so that I can firm up my 52 year old body.

Hi, I'm new to SP. I am about to turn 61 and retired. I have multiple health issues the worst being arthritis in hands and back. Last year I struggled to loose 15 pounds and gained it all back over the holidays. I am hoping to not just loose but start a new lifestyle that will get me as fit as I can be

I am 51 years old, and one year ago started on a journey to get fit, and lose weight. I had a gastric bypass in January of 2013, and still have about 10 lbs to my goal (I am currently down 93 lbs). I exercise 4x/week. I would like to do more, but I take care of my aging parents, so that limits my free time.
I am fairly new to SP, and there is still so much to learn about this site. I currently track all my food on MyFitnessPal, and log all my exercise there too. I am going to try to figure this site out too, but it is so big that it might take a little while!
Thanks for inviting me to your group!

Hi. I am Laura. I live in Augusta, Ga. I will be turning 50 in a month and 7 days! I have lost a total of about 30 lbs in the last 8 months. I would like to drop 10 more. I don't know if that is going to be possible but I am going to try. My highest weight was 210lbs. I weight about 154 now.

Hi,
I just turned 62. I have tried every diet plan there is and this is the best motivating, inspiring LIFESTYLE change yet. I am loving it. I want to get up everyday and do the work. Here at the holidays I am determined to stay focused and yet enjoy the goodies. I walk every morning and when the hip acts up from too much inline, I park myself in front of the computer and do the workouts with Coach Nicole! She is awesome. I feel energized and more positive than i have in years. I have spent the last 10 years playing yo-yo and surviving cancer. Out of remission and ready to keep on living! Thanks to everyone who has responded to me and bear with me while i learn to navigate these pages.....
Best wishes to all for a very Happy Holiday Season!!!

I can't remember if I've introduced myself here or not so...I've just turned 54 and am in a state of disbelief - my kids are all achieving ages closer to 30 than I'd like to think. Weren't we just 30? So anyway, I figure I have a choice - I can sit here on the couch feeling blue about how quickly my life has sped by or I can make every moment of my life GREAT!

I'm choosing the later! I've got about 25 lbs. to lose and am sticking with the guidelines that Spark provided since trying to take it off the "trendy" way has just not worked for me. I just want to create a healthy lifestyle and, hopefully, the weight will leave of it's own accord.

I'm excited to be here!!

i am new to Sparks, but not new to the weight loss world having been a WW member for most of the last 45 years...I am now 61 and this past year i've allowed myself total freedom to eat what i want, when i want, to not excercise and just do what i normally do with my days which is a lot of volunteer work, painting, playing with my dogs and grandchildren. but then voila...my clothes stopped fitting, my bra's couldn't be snapped and i didn't want to spend money on new sizes...AND wanted to get weight off so that my joints felt better. I know that a healthier weight will mean a happier me...so since i heard good things about this site thought i would try it. I had used body media (?) site before...

i am interested in knowing if anyone uses the electronic armband...body bugg type thing. and if so is there a newer technology out or anything you recomend to track activity? i am not big on spending hours on the computer, but would love something that could give me a number at the end of the day that i could use as a measurement of my activity.

Hi, Carol, I don't get on the sight as much as I used to. I did today thought I would offer you words of encouragement. I changed me diet back in March 2013 more because I felt really sluggish than for weight loss. I weighed 156. Today, I weigh 123. It actually took me about 7 months to lost the weight. I feel like a new person. I'll be 54 on Sunday. I really found the daily food calculators helpful in the very beginning, just to get an idea about the food I was eating. It was quite eye opening, to say the least. I went to eating organic ( mostly, anyway). I make sure I have fresh fruits and/ or veggies or both at every meal & more of them daily than anything else. The phase I'm currently in is I am taking feed lot meat (grocery store meat) out of my diet. Free Range, organic is expensive but I usually have several meatless meals a week now. I use raw honey to sweeten my coffee. The sugar part was the hardest for me but, the longer you stay with it, the more your taste buds will actually change. I don't even put sugar on my oatmeal any more. I also stopped drinking cows milk. I still eat eggs & cheese. I watched all the "foodie" documentaries On Netfix. There was so much to learn. After I learned about what is going on with the food system in America, I was shocked. If I can do it, anybody can. When I think about how really unhealthy I used to be: that I was a smoker for 35 years, ate fried food a couple times a week & never thought for a minute what I was putting in my mouth.....it's amazing the turn-around. I'm not tooting my own horn, I just want to shout from the rooftops to anyone who will hear that it IS possible. And when you start to see results, it feeds on itself ( no pun intended!) You can do it. It's not about going on a diet. It's about changing your diet! Hugs...Lisa
My ticker is out of date & I don't know how to change it. I tried to but it didn't work. It's been a very long time since I've been on the site.

Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas

I have been added as a Team Leader for the 50+ members with 10-24 pounds to lose Team. I enjoy and cherish the members on this team and really enjoy the topics on the threads. During the past year I lost 16 pounds and am working to keep it off now. I know that part of the success was being involved in this community so I am grateful that you are all here. MACI has not been posting and I know we all keep her in our thoughts, so I have been added as a Team Leader. We are such an active Team it doesn’t need a leader but it does help with some of the housekeeping tasks. Please feel free to email me if you have questions or suggestions. Otherwise it is fun, friendship, encouragement and support as usual.

Hi! My name is Carol and I joined Sparkpeople about 2 months ago and have been a pretty quiet participant until now. I am a retired HR Generalist who now watches her granddaughters and I am about to turn 54 in 10 days. In my younger days I was the one who could eat anything and everything and not gain any weight. In fact I was under weight until I had my second child and then I would say I was at a healthy weight by today's standards. Having my 3rd and 4th children in my early to mid 30's added more weight along with a metabolism that started to slow down. So here I am today on phase 1 of my weight loss journey.

emoticon A DECEMBER TOPIC for our 50+ CHAT THREAD: emoticon

Someone said: Christmas is "coming like a freight train..." I like that. (I crouch in the corner til it passes.)

Why post a new thread when we have a discussion thread to use for different topics? I want everyone who is on any of the team threads to be able to talk in one place about this.

There seems to be some interest in discussing who our team leaders are and have the folks actually participating on the team. With MACILYN and FIONA gone, does it matter whether we have team captains? I don't know. I didn't think about it.

I'm always doing volunteer work for Nicotine Anonymous (nicotine-anonymous.org) and between that and sparks, big parts of my day are eaten. Notice the choice of words.

Wonder why Fiona just slipped away? Her posts were getting fewer and far between. But no matter. Whatever ideas any of you have on this topic are appreciated. What does the 50+ team want, if anything, to do about official team leadership? Or unofficial leadership?

I never knew what the team leaders did other than create topics for threads. Clue me in.

Any volunteers? Let's post all conversation on this topic in our Chat Thread, shall we? Thank You!

in loving service,
Dale

Hi to all. I have just joined Spark People this week and I can't tell you how happy I am to have found you! Weight was never a problem for me. I lost both parents at an early age to heart disease and in recent years have lost two brothers. Because of my early experience I always tried to maintain an active life and eat reasonably. However, with a divorce at 45 and menopause kicking in around 50, the weight has continued to creep up on me! I'm determined to get back to a weight that feels healthy. I felt that I would really need some accountability and encouragement but I didn't know where to start. Thankfully my doctor recommended Spark at my annual visit this week and I am thrilled.

I'm getting off to a good start and looking forward to joining you guys on your journies.

Wishing everyone a great day today. It is beautiful and 69 degrees here today!

Becky

Hi! Just a short introduction to the team. This is Patti. I joined SP in August 20213 and love the tools, resources and especially the community support. Yes. I am 50+ with 10 pounds to lose and really enjoy reading the posts that y'all share. I am a recently retired RN with 25 years nursing experience and 40 years in the health care system. Love my new life with time to spend taking care of myself. That's a new twist in my formerly hectic life. Still happily married after 41 years to the same wonderful best friend and sweetheart of my life. 3 children, 9 grandchildren who are aaawesome! I hope to meet my long term goals of losing these last, nasty 10 pounds by June 2014 and will appreciate reading your experiences and successes.

You will never know how timely your message was for me. My husband and I have time-crunched schedules for the next month, so today was the day to start getting out the Christmas decorations. I know, I know...unorthodox before Thanksgiving, but in order to meet certain deadlines and traditions, this was the day. One of the first ornaments out of the box was of our son when he was a child. My heart broke. This will be a grievous challenge. We will put his stocking up too. We must. God knows all too well how hard the death of a beloved son is. We will celebrate the birth of His this season and thank Him for the times we had with ours. He is our comfort. The birth, the death, the resurrection...we have a merciful Savior who will sustain us. I am grateful for the connection with you and I thank you on behalf of all you have served with such care and kindness, as you have just done for me. God bless you Patricia! In Christ, Chris

I love your attitude with a spiritual center on the tender mercies of God. I hope you will be comforted in your life journey. After 25 years as a Registered Nurse and 40 years on health care, I have walked many challenging journeys with hundreds, maybe, thousands of people and their families. So rewarding to serve others and I have learned and received much more than I gave. My husband and I are blessed with 41 years of marriage, 3 children, 9 grandchildren and a lifetime of love and service together. I look forward to participating in this forum and reading your successes and struggles. May you be blessed, always! PatriciaRN.

Thank you for your encouragement. It means a lot. The holiday season is going to be rough...our first Thanksgiving, our first Christmas without him. I don't know how to get through this, but God does, and that is enough. I don't ask why, but rather, what and how. What can I learn from this and how can I glorify God in it? He will lead and I will follow.

Great way of rising above the pitfalls of life. Your good character rose above your difficult circumstance. Very inspiring.

We have much in common. My children are grown and gone as well. Our son Matthew died last April. The grief and sadness have been overwhelming. I have R.A. and realize the odds of me being the next family tragedy are greater than the remaining family members. It is my new mission and focus to improve my odds. I never want to be the source of my family's sadness. I have coupled my grief with some positive choices. When I am grief-stricken, I take off walking , riding my bike, etc. I use that time to pray and cry. The physical and spiritual time have helped me immensely. I am down 12-14 sizes, have been taken off of blood pressure medicine, and have grown closer to God in the process. This journey will never end...neither will my grief, but I will forever give my best, just today. Jokingly I told my family that when I do die, I want my gravestone to say, "Well, she died trying!" I wish you the best on your journey. We are both worth the very best.

I pondered setting my alarm 1 hour earlier, but just didn't do it. I think starting tomorrow I will do it. I too am finally taking care of myself first (actually, my kids are grown and out of the house and both my parents are gone so I don't have anyone else to take care of except myself). And, taking care of myself now will hopefully save my kids from having to take care of me too early.

It is so hard to juggle it all especially when you have admirable & important priorities and responsibilities. I wish there was an easy fix to your dilemma. I can only tell you what works for me with an equally busy but different schedule in hopes that you find something similar that works for you. I get up 1 hour earlier, sometimes 2 and hit the cardio. When I have invested the sweat and time at the beginning of my day, I am less likely to squander it on mindless eating and slothful behavior. Because of this, I have more energy and motivation throughout the day with LESS stress. At some point in my journey it dawned on me that I take care of everybody else first and then I gather the crumbs for myself. Now, I understand I am worthy of so much more and put myself first. In doing so I am able to give my best to myself AND my family. It has been win-win while I lose, lose! No matter what circumstance you find yourself in give it your best just today. Soon all of those just todays turn into a changed body and mindset. You are worth it, I promise.

Hi There,

I am 55 years old and have been on Spark for about a year. My son suggested checking it out so I did. I lost 20 pounds, then gained 10 back from November 2012 to July 2013. Since refocusing in August, I have lost 38 pounds averaging 1.5 pounds per week. I believe that I have hit that plateau. I did not loose anything this past week. I have not incorporate exercise into my weight loss program. I just can not seem to motivate myself to do it. I work 40 hours per week, Monday - Friday, and go to school two nights a week for 4 1/2 hours each night. Then there is the homework, that takes most of my free time. I also make it a point to spend one weekend day with my daughter. So, my "excuse" is that I just don't have the time to exercise. I am 12 pounds away from my goal weight and I know I will need to add exercise to my routine. So, I am here to get and give support. emoticon
