New to spark and the whole weight loss program. Had never had an issue with weight while serving in the Army and even in the first few years after retiring but after hitting 45 and deciding to quit smokeless tobacco at about the same time - I found a bunch of weight that I now want to lose.

A friend recommended this site as a good source to track my intake and progress. So far, after a week and 5 pounds of weight shed it has helped. I have found that my self control and the amount (portions) I was eating had much to do with my problem.

In all, I am hoping to lose a total of 35 pounds.

Hi, I'm new to this team but not to the Spark. I've been in and out since 2009 and I'm hoping that interacting a little more will give me the push that I need. I entered my 40's last fall and all this weight loss stuff feels like its getting harder and harder. I don't enjoy exercising but have recently discovered that I am extremely motivated by a challenge, hopefully that will last through the 30 pounds I've set as my goal. I have two weddings to attend in September and I hope to be near my goal by then!

Hi,

I've been a member of this group for a long time but I've never posted, I am doing it now because I'm hoping all the research is right and community involvement helps keep me on track.

I've been off the Sparkpeople wagon for a while and it's time to get back on. My biggest challenge is staying focused on the tracking. When I see the scale drop I think 'ok, I get it now' and stop tracking - we all know how that creeps up!

I used to be a runner but due to back issues I am no longer allowed to do that so I'm struggling to find exercises I enjoy and can do pain free. Walking and Pilates have been my go to's lately. I was doing 21 day fix workouts and meal plan back in September and they worked until it triggered my back. I was really bummed because it was making a big difference. I felt GREAT and I LOVED the workouts - I am hopeful that dropping some weight will help with the back and allow me to return to some more challenging activities.

February 1st seems like a great day to get this party started.

My goal is to drop 25 pounds by Memorial Day, we all want it faster but I'm trying to be patient - not my best thing! emoticon

Happy Monday!

Hi everyone! I'm Laura, and am completely new to SP. I'm a 47 yr old mom to two - a 22 yr old and a 7 yr old who has more energy than a power plant. I've fought this battle a few times over the years, and have decided I'm mostly happy with my weight - though losing 30 (or maybe a little more than that) would be great for me health-wise. What I'm not happy with is how my weight is making my knees feel. I've had bad knees for years, and my current weight is just making them worse. So here's hoping that paying attention to what I'm eating, and making sure I'm getting out and moving will help add a few years to my knees and some ability to keep up with my younger child.

Hi, This is the third time for me on Sparkpeople and I can honestly say that I am ready for the journey this time. I am losing weight and getting fit for the right reasons. It isn't to please my husband or just to look better, I am doing this to get healthier. I had a couple of health scares last year and it just hit home that I have to do this to live a long life so that I can see my kids grow-up. I have been doing this now for 3 weeks. I wanted to wait to post here until I knew I could follow through. I have been tracking my food, water and exercise. I can see that I need to eat more fruit and veggies, eat less fat and get up and move more. I wish you all well on this journey that we are on.

Hello. I'm not technically "new" but have been an inactive member and am back and wanting to give it my all! I just turned 47 and have been having issues with my blood pressure and was recently put on high blood pressure meds. My doctor also sent me for a physical, after which I found out that in addition to having high blood pressure,I'm prediabetic, have high cholesterol, and my carotid arteries are hardening. Needless to say, that was a horrific wake up call. I have since improved my diet and have become more active. I've lost 5 lbs since January 15. I'm not here just to lose weight anymore. I want to change my lifestyle, improve my health, and get off of medication. I want to be around for my children for many years to come.

Hi COOSEYOURHARDD, I found your reply. You actually made me feel better knowing there are more of me out there! :-) It's funny, but my introductory rant last week was incredibly cathartic, and I have been positive and upbeat this whole last week just for having gotten all that out "in the universe." It feels GREAT to get started here, feels GREAT to have a sense of belonging without having to constantly deplete what little in-person interaction my introversion can handle, and it ESPECIALLY felt great this morning when I weighed in and had dropped almost 2 pounds since last week's Wednesday Weigh-In. :-)

So, I hope your rant was therapeutic for you, and I hope you are motivated to "grab it and growl" (my hubby's favorite thing to say). There are tons of resources here and everyone is so supportive it just really makes me smile to experience it.

Have a wonderful and successful day, and keep checking in!

I apologize, I thought I was replying directly to Jessica0140, but I see that's not the case. So, in case I have lost you with my rant, refer to her previously listed post and it will all make sense! Have a great day everyone!!

Hello twin, although I'd be the larger one. I just wrote my first blog in which my sentiments ran parallel to yours. I'm actually beyond tears about the shape that I am in. I saw a photo of myself that was taken today, and all I wanted to do was delete it. My clothes don't fit, my bras suck, and if I could live in elastic waist pants, I would. But I really can't, not dress code approved, you know, and I really don't want to have to. I really appreciate your honesty, so let's pull out those fitness gadgets gathering dust, and get this done! As for being an introvert, I am with you on that as well. I considered joining weight watchers, but I would have to face a real live person and let them record my weight. Yeah, no thanks, I'll see you later. But I am really missing the support element as well. I work with people who all weigh 100 pounds and eat everything in sight so I need to seek support elsewhere. Hope I didn't bum you out, but maybe it's a good day to be honest!

Hi everyone! I just joined today - was a member 4 years ago but never followed through. I'm 47 and would like to lose about 30 pounds. My children are getting older now (oldest is 18) and I feel that I need to take the time now to focus on my health a bit more. I'm looking forward to exploring the site and getting to know everyone!

Hi everyone, I'm still learning the ropes around here, I posted on the wrong board- whoops
Here's my original post copied from main board.

Hi all, I think the stars must have aligned or something, because I've decided to get my fitness on. I quit smoking a year ago Nov 1st, which also happens to be my rebirthday. I'm a 10 year Colorectal cancer SURVIVOR or have been in remission for 10 years. Some people say you're never cancer free, I like my rose colored glasses :)
Anyway, between surgery and quitting smoking AND turning 40 something my frame has a few unwanted pounds. So, I'm here.

Hello team! I'm 42 and looking to get fit, stay fit. And look and feel good for the second half of my life. I'm pretty good at starting diets and losing weight, then I stop only telling myself it's a short break and I end up putting it all back on. I'm an avid reader.

Hi Jessica

Welcome to the team. We've all tried going it alone at one time ir another. Studies show having a good support system is needed. And I promise (and I'm sure the rest ot the team does too) to be here to support you, be a friend, and help however I can.

Hi, team. I posted this introduction in the main Message Board, then found this team board so...here I am. :) Original post pasted in below:

**********
Hi, everyone. I'm Jessica, and I joined SparkPeople a couple days ago but have been stalling on writing this post to introduce myself. Couldn't figure out why until this morning, when I realized I had been wanting to post an upbeat introduction so I didn't bum anybody out and so I could convince you all I am excited and motivated about this...but, in truth, I'm not.

I'm not excited. I'm not motivated. I'm just...I'm staring at myself in the mirror and reading the number on the scale and finally just need to accept the fact that I'm not healthy and not happy. And it's depressing that I've let myself get this way. I'm wearing my husband's track suits because none of my jeans fit anymore, and the elastic in my bras is shot from being forced to wrap around a chest that's probably two sizes bigger than the size on the tag. Oh, and my body feels weak and everything hurts, to boot.

So I'm skipping the upbeat introduction and just being honest. The whole point of joining this community was to both get and give support, and I can't do either if I don't give you all the information. And by the way, joining this community? That's a choice which, for an extreme introvert like myself who typically avoids social situations and is happy spending time alone, speaks loudly of just how ready I am for help and how there's just no lying to myself anymore about what needs to be done.

So here we go. The first lie to crumble to dust in the sunlight is that I can do this by myself. I can't. Ten years, 30 pounds, and a cluttered pile of dozens of briefly used fitness programs and machines proves it.

I'm 5' 5" and weighed in at 170 pounds a few days ago, not coincidentally less than 24 hours before signing up--in tears--for SparkPeople. I live a mostly sedentary life working at a desk or on quiet projects at home, which means I have time to exercise. I can cook, which means I have the skills to be eating healthy, natural foods. And I have Internet access, which means I can learn or buy anything I could possibly need to do this. So why aren't I doing it? Rather, why don't I keep doing it once I start? I'll get motivated and make lists and schedules and dive headfirst into my "new life," only to get thrown off track by something (you know, life) and wonder six months later what happened to my awesome new routine and why I'm still overweight and in crappy shape.

The only reason I can think of is the common denominator in all my previous attempts: I tried to do it alone. Clearly a bad approach, no matter how good my intentions are, so here I am finally admitting I need help. And that REALLY bugs me to do that. I can and do usually handle most things just fine by myself. But my ego is just going to have to take the hit in this case, because I see no other way to make these changes and make them stick.

So, I need help. Please. And I promise to return the favor when I can.

Thanks for listening, you guys. Really. I haven't even posted this yet and I already feel better for writing it.

Okay, maybe I am a teensy bit motivated to get this going now. I guess I'll go work on my SparkPage and stuff.

emoticon

Hi Sandy,

Welcome to the team! You've had an eventful few years. Good for you on quitting the smoking and sticking with that. it's not easy to do from what I hear and glad you survived the heart attack as well.

You're an inspiration! Surviving so much, losing weight and still having such a great attitude!

Hi Jen

Welcome to the team! I understand running out of free time during the day. Not because of kids---just being busy, taking care of an ill parent, running all over town, work, etc.

Sometimes life gets in our way. We just have to find small changes we can make now and when we have those breaks, make larger changes.

If we did all the things we are capable of doing, we would literally astound ourselves. 傍homas Edison

Hi Im Jen. I haven't introduced myself yet, but I joined Spark on Dec 20th. Between studies and work, learning how to be healthy and working out and time with kiddo, my time is limited on becoming active in the groups, but eventually that will change.

Hello All! My goal is to be Super FIT from the INside OUT! I've been on SP for awhile. I initially joined to support a friend with their weight loss emergency so I dabbled but I never took the program seriously but now I am unhappy with my weight and shape so I am on here for ME!

Hi my name is Lisa. I just joined sparkpeople yesterday. When I turned 40 5 years ago I only had 10 pounds to lose now I'm 45 and have 30lbs to lose. I've tried every diet out there and nothing works for me. Hoping a site that holds me accountable will work.

hi! I turned 40 two weeks ago and decided to give this healthy lifestyle another go. I want to lose 30 pounds using a realistic approach with consistency. My weight has been up and down but I understand now how important good health is as we age. I hope to give and receive motivation to help all of us achieve our goals.

Hello everyone.
My name is Janice. I have struggled with weight for most of my life. I would get to goal and stay there a few months and then loss focus and gain it back. I used to be able to loose 30 pounds in three months. This is not the case anymore, it is much slower. Glad I joined spark people for the support and inspiration I need.

I just switched from Weight Watchers. I was a member since March 2015 and lost seven pounds. $19.99 a month is expensive for what the on-line program offers. The tracking is similar but the community on this site is more active. This site has more recipes and it provides much more nutritional information.

I have been trying to lose 5 lbs by January 1st. I was down 3lbs in two weeks and then ate ham and Mac and cheese yesterday for a Christmas splurge and gained 4lbs in one day!! I hope it's just water weight from the carbs and salt, but I get discouraged from my very big weight fluctuations from day to day!!! I almost joined weight watchers today as that has worked for me in the past, but I don't want to spend the money. I've tried spark people in the past and it doesn't seem to keep me as accountable, but it's free, so worth a try!!!so, here we go!!!

Hi, I'm Amy. If you look at my ticker, it looks like I have only have 15 pounds to lose, but I was intimidated when I saw the real number (40+) so I decided to focus on a smaller goal first so I'd be less likely to get discouraged. I have a chronic condition that causes me to fatigue easily and impacts my mobility, so there are limits to the amount and types of exercises I can do. I'm focusing on consistently completing my physical and occupational therapy exercises so I can increase my daily activity levels. On the food side, my husband's doctor recommended he follow the DASH diet, so I'm seeing what impact that can have on my healthy eating habits. I just got a reconditioned Vitamix for an early Christmas present, so I'm planning to use that and my crock pot to help me get healthy meals on the table with minimal effort. I'm looking forward to being a part of this forum. I used SparkPeople in the past, but I've got a new login name and am starting from scratch so that I can focus on moving forward, instead of seeing where I stopped being disciplined in the past.

Hi! I turned 40 this summer and am still working on my journey to better health. Just trying to rev things up to spark my motivation again and stay on track. I mainly work an office job which we know can be detrimental to our health so I'm learning how to balance. Looking forward to being a part of the 40 somethings and fit!

One day at a time!

Hi, I am 45, newly divorced mom/kindergarten teacher looking for a support group to lose the weight I've put on this past year. I would be happy to lose 20 but 30 would be a plus. I am doing Zumba and just started doing the 21 day fix.

Hello, all! I am a female, 49 year old, 5'4", engaged, Private Investigator in Florida with four grown children. I have become a bit sedentary and went from 110 pounds to 155 in the last three years. I have lost 5 in the last week and shall continue. (Getting over my faux pas of indulging in a bit of "bad" food yesterday on Thanksgiving!) No matter how "old school" EA Sports Active 2 for wii sounds to kids today, I swear by it. I lost 50 pounds on it years ago and I am using it again. Completed my first full workout today (have been trying for a week, but had to build up strength!) and I feel proud and GREAT. I am down 5 pounds in a week and will continue my diet and workouts. Wishing everyone else success. ;)

Hi!
My name is Janet and I am married with two boys (ages 12 years and 9 years). I work part-time in a semi-busy retail pharmacy as a Pharmacy Technician.

I think the stresses, exhaustion and life has made me use food to get me through my day-to-day activities. I want to make this work and I will make it work.

See Ya!

Welcome back to SP Annapolitanya!

You have a great concept about making this about a healthy lifestyle. Plenty of free workout videos on SP and YouTube and you can always walk. Exercise doesn't have to cost us a fortune!

Good luck and feel free to add me as a friend if you'd like.

Hi, I'm a mother in her late 40s. First time on Spark People. My goal is to lose 40 pounds that I gained over the last 10 years or so. A good friend of mine introduced me to Spark People. When I told her how much I'd been eating she told me "You're starving yourself". I was shocked when I realized that I wasn't eating enough (and gaining weight). So I decided to start tracking my food intake. SP makes it incredibly easy. I'm planning on shooting for 1200 calories and 70 grams of protein a day. I've only being using SP for 5 days but I'm more encouraged than I ever have been by any other plan. I'm eating healthy and meeting my goals and I'M LOSING WEIGHT!!! I plan on using SP as long as it takes to learn how much food I need, until it becomes routine (translation - even after I get to my goal). I'm so excited again to try new healthy recipes (like the Quinoa pizza I made for dinner tonight). Thanks SP for making this journey easier for me!

Hi! I'm 43 and proud mom of one. I put on 60+ lbs with my pregnancy over 7 years ago and lost 30 lbs but gained it all back. I want to lose 40 lbs. and adopt a healthy lifestyle. Before I got pregnant, I never had to work hard to stay thin. Things change! Time to get serious 'cause it's not going to get any easier!

I too am a previous member and decided it was time to come back. I've been gone for over a couple of years, and have actually lost weight since my last membership. I still have a little more to go, but need the support, encouragement, and push to get it done.
My name is Tim, and I'm almost 47 years young. I live in Waynesboro, Va. with my wife of 11 years and dog Samson of three years.
I'm looking forward to meeting as many of you as possible and forming a great friendship.

Tim

Good morning! I'm back to SparkPeople after a nearly 3-year hiatus. Without going into a ridiculously long story, I had great success from 2011-2012, and was maintaining when the bottom fell out of my life. I've had some major challenges to overcome, and while I am not all the way there yet, I'm making strides and stepping forward each day. I've regained weight and lost fitness...and while I'm just at the very edge of being overweight, what is most important for me is a healthy lifestyle, a healthy diet, and my level of fitness. I don't have as many resources available to me due to changes in my income and budget, but I have achieved my goals before and have confidence that I can achieve them again! I'm trying something new...reaching out and joining a community, which is difficult since I am very introverted. I'm looking forward to meeting people and supporting one another! Cheers!

October 27, 2015: 137 lbs, BP ?
Goal: 125 lbs by Thanksgiving, November 26
Goal: Reclaiming my healthy lifestyle; walking and strength training 6 days/week!
______________________________________
______________________
November 20, 2011: 161 lbs, BP 160/110
July 31, 2012: 109.6 lbs, BP 110/65
October 1, 2012: 109 lbs, BP 110/60
Two goals reached: 115 lbs, 110 lbs
Next goal: lower body fat % and increase strength; not sure if I need to lose any more weight!

Welcome to the team RMRDBALLERINA

Sadly a lot of medications can cause weight gain. The changes you've made so far seem to really be working well for you. Keep up the great work!

I've been struggling with my weight since my early 30's, after being put on an anti-depressant medication. By the time I turned 40 I'd been as heavy as 220 and struggled to get down to 208. Last year, my doctor decided the anti-depressant was no longer beneficial and took me off of it. That alone caused a 20 pound loss. Earlier this year, my boyfriend had a health scare and decided it was time to eat clean. I lost another 14 pounds just cutting out most junk food and all soda and eating out only once a week along with walking fairly regularly with my dog. My doctor was really happy with my numbers at my physical this year but for my future health, would like to see me lose another 20-25 pounds. Time to step up my game!

Hi, everyone.

I'm new to the group. I just turned 46 last month and live in the San Francisco Bay area (Silicon Valley). I see my parents struggling with health issues as they age and many are related to weight. I want to improve my health as I near 50 and I hope to lose 40 lbs.

Hi MissDoo1

Welcome to the team. I'm in South OC. We're practically neighbors.

For the sweet tooth, try eating fruit. That usually helps calm my sweet tooth down.

Hello, I just joined the group. I live in San Diego California and I'm really hoping to shed these extra pounds. I quit smoking and gained a bunch of weight. I workout a lot and would love some buddies : ) The bad part is that lately, I've had a bad sweet tooth the last 2-3 days. During the day I eat great, it's at night that gets me...my goal is 8 -10 lbs month. I'm glad to find this group and have a go at this with you all. I would love to give/receive support : ) I'm looking to loose about 30-33lbs.

Hello! Just joined yesterday and need the support, so thanks for having me. I am 43 (almost 44) years old. About 4 years ago, I lost about 40 lbs on Medifast, but in the last 2-3 years, have gained it all back plus some due to life stress, etc. I have just recommitted to Medifast to jump start my weight loss and healthy eating - I plan on this just for a couple of months and then will do tracking my eating so that I continue to lose and relearn healthy eating habits. Thanks for having me here!
