Hi Steffani emoticon

Welcome to the team! I think we all feel like we recycle the same pounds every now and then. I know you'll find lots of support and encouragement here on the team!

Feel free to add me as a friend, if you want, and we can help support each other!

If we did all the things we are capable of doing, we would literally astound ourselves. 傍homas Edison

Hi, Steffani! I am just getting started, too, and I've got at least 30 pounds to lose. I would love to be in a size 8 as well!!! Let's do it! Keep me posted - this is Day 2 for me and I am running late for my appointment with a treadmill...

My name is Steffani. I'm 44 years old. I am happily married with 4 boys (ages 10,11,15 and 16. I have been a Spark People member for 7 or 8 years and lost a lot of weight when I was consistent with it. Unfortunately, I fell off the wagon and I've gained everything back. I'm aggravated at myself for letting that happen, but I guess it is what it is. I'm trying to get back on track by logging my food each day and exercising for at least 30 minutes at least 4 times a week and taking at least 10,000 steps a day.
I would love to be an encouragement to others who are on the weight loss journey and would like to make some new friends in the process. I could definitely use some encouragement to stay on track too. I have Hashimotos and sometimes losing weight is a battle and very slow. Sometimes I feel like I am just "recycling the same few pounds over and over again. That's when I get discouraged and want to throw in the towel.

"Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off the goal."

Goals: to lose 40 pounds and to wear a size 8 dress like I did when I got married 19 years ago!

Hi Outbound15

Welcome to the team. We offers lots of support here. For the competition--I have a team challenge set up (see the separate category). It's really a challenge for you against you rather than competing against each other.

I am always eager to hear what members suggest or want to see. If you have an idea about a team challenge or competition, let me know and we can pursue that as an option too!

Thanks

Hi there @Sixfoot1--welcome back to SP and to the team.

We do try to be pretty active on this team, so hopefully you won't find us to be too slow. I had that problem with a few teams too. I'm actively looking for support and friendship and to interact with people, so I try and make sure the team stays as active as we can!

Glad you're here and will be adding to our team!

Hello all! I've been on SP off and on since 2009. I've discovered most of the sparkteams that I have belonged to have don't get much activity online any more. Hoping this will be an active page and I can meet some new sparkfriends!

Hi, I'm Denise. I first joined SP in 2010 and am back. I am a mom of two active boys, recently returned to the workforce. 2009 I weighed 245 (my heaviest), in 2010 my weight was 230 when I discovered SP, 2011-2012 lost 50lbs. BUT past 2 years have been rough, gained 30 back. Welcome to the Forty's emoticon
Starting over at 210, lost 2lbs this week. Looking forward to making new Buddies. Need help staying focused and on track with all these life changes going because my health is paying the price for the weight gain. emoticon

Hi and welcome Outbound15! emoticon

You are definitely not alone with struggles. And we have tons of support here for you!

I use a combo of paper tracking and electronic. I track my exercise through here but my nutrition is tracked on paper--it's easier for me.

Looking forward to getting to know you better and provide support, friendship and/or help whenever I can!

Hi, Gang! I just joined yesterday (1/22/15) and am using this weekend to get organized - starting the Dr. Oz Ten Program on Monday as a kick start to my weight loss goal - clean eating, veggies, protein - primarily, I want to use Spark for the community/message boards - I'm not a major fan of electronic tracking (I'm pulling out an old fashioned spiral notebook for that) but I want to know that there are buddies out there with similar goals and struggles

Oops - I originally stuck this in the wrong place and started a new topic, so sorry for the redundancy!

Hi! New here . . . 40-something and trying to drop 35 lbs that I've found in the last 3 years. I can't even believe that's where I am - I was always the one with high metabolism who could eat whatever I wanted. No more. I guess it's a gift from the Menopause Fairy.

I'm so glad to find the site and I just wanted to say thank you to the leaders who seem very committed to being here for people.

I have four kids - two in college, two in high school, and like a lot of people, my job is very stressful. I met with a trainer to work on my upper body I've taken up running; one of my girls and I are signed up for her first half marathon this spring.

I took a picture on my birthday - heavier than ever, but with a big smile on my face because this is going to be a great year and I can't wait to see next year's picture.

Cheers! CM

Hi Christel

Welcome to the team. SP has articles on how to work out in the cold as well as lots of videos and things you can do indoors!

My job requires prolonged amounts of sitting, so I try to get up and move at least once per hour. Some members do mini workouts in their cubicles. You can beat the inactivity by setting small goals to move.

If we did all the things we are capable of doing, we would literally astound ourselves. 傍homas Edison

Hi JPike44

Sorry an injury set you back. You're right on target by setting realistic goals to avoid setting yourself up for failure. When our goals are unachievable or require so much effort that we don't see we're reaching mini goals, we tend to give up.

So you gained back your weight plus...set a realistic goal for 5% weight loss during first month back at this. Or set a 3 month goal for 10% of total body weight. For instance, you weigh 250lbs. 5% weight loss would be 12.5lbs putting your new weight at 237.5. A 10% weight loss is 25lbs which drops your weight down to 225lbs.

Setting a goal with an anticipated end date or target date helps you set a timeline to that goal. Also set up a reward (non food) for that first goal. Such as new shoes or new work out clothes.

If you want to set exercise goals--set a 10 minute per day goal and gradually increase. Don't just do an open ended, I will exercise 5 days per week. Set how long each exercise session will be, how many days and at the end of X number of days reward yourself again for achieving that goal.

Example--I will work out 30 minutes per day 5 days per week minimum. I will do this for the next 30 days. If you achieve this goal--give yourself another reward.

Good luck!

Hi Fitandlovely--welcome back!

Tackle each together. We can use a 10minute (minimum) workout per day to ease into working out again. In the meantime, you should evaluate your food intake and make adjustments as needed. You don't want to continue eating high fat, high calorie foods while working out.

If a lot of change is too much initially, try to make one healthy adjustment for nutrition per day or per week. For instance, if you use whole milk, drop down to 2% or 1%. If you eat 4 pieces of cheese per day, try dropping it down to 2 per day. These small adjustments do add up without overwhelming you or making you feel deprived.

If we did all the things we are capable of doing, we would literally astound ourselves. 傍homas Edison

Hi, I'm Christel. I turned 40 December of 2013. I lost about 10 lbs early last year, but due to stress, distractions, and inactivity, I gained it back starting late summer. I'm hoping to get active again, though the bitter cold temps have me staying in most of the day and wanting to hibernate and make comfort food. The only good thing is that most of the comfort food is whole/clean foods at this point! I especially love to make soups in the crock pot.

Hi. I turned 40 last August and I've decided this is the year of my life that I'm going to change my health habits. I've been a member of SP since 2010, but hadn't logged in for a couple of years. Now I'm here with new goals to lose some weight, tone up, become stronger physically and allow myself to be encouraged by small steps, as well as hopefully encouraging others in the same way.

I was making a lot of progress last summer but then injured myself and gained all the weight back plus 10 lbs. I'm finally healed and trying to get back on track with my weight loss. It is a struggle and the cold weather does not help. It leaves me feeling unmotivated after work when it's dark and I'm tired. I'm hoping to gain some momentum and not set outrageous goals that just leave me frustrated.

Hi everyone, I'm returning after a two year absence with 30 lbs to lose. I have to get control over my eating and move my body more. I'm working out a plan to work on both of those things or should I focus on one goal at a time??

@Tinatinic---I'm recovering from bronchitis, so I feel for you.

Since exercise might be hard while sick, just spend this time setting up your goals, organizing your plan and looking at recipes. If you're up to it, do some small walks.

Feel better!!! emoticon emoticon

Hi there Eroomom, welcome!

I, too, sit behind a computer for long hours. Being sedentary is really hard on my back (I have serious back problems), so I set an alarm clock for once an hour. Each hour, I get up, stretch, take a quick walk or stand for a few minutes. By quick walk, I mean, get up and go get water, go to the bathroom. On days where I'm able to take a break or those days where I'm working at home, I make those walks a bit longer. Amazingly just getting up for 5 minutes each hour and moving a bit, helps the muscles in my back not spasm so badly and keeps them and my hips from getting too tight. Plus, it's movement and in my book, all movement is good! Keeps me awake during long days of reading long, boring charts.

I frequently fall back on the I'm too busy excuse. But that's just what it is, an excuse. I don't have kids--but I have 7 pets and a husband. Close enough in my book as they all require feeding, care, etc. I work 3 jobs, 50% of it at home. I've come to realize that my excuses of being too busy or too tired are just lame. If I don't take care of myself and put ME on the top of the priority pile--no one else will and eventually, my health will deteriorate to the point where I can no longer do what I want to do. That may seem bleak, but that's the reality of it. If we don't take care of ourselves, no one else will. We will continue to gain weight, continue to have poor health and ultimately decline to the point of no return.

My spine will never be normal. But being overweight is not helping it. I have to do this for me and to help my spine. Taking weight off will only help my pain. Thankfully, I have no other complications of being overweight--but the risk is still there.

Commit to yourself. Put yourself on the very top of that priority list. Do this for YOU first and foremost and then for your family.

I see posts and articles all the time about exercising while watching TV and always thought it was 'silly'. But guess what, watching TV, while relaxing, is a bit like being a lump on the couch (to me) nowadays. Unless I'm sick, I try to always move. I now do exercises while watching TV. Lunges, squats, stretch, jog in place. Some people use the commercial breaks and work out. Others walk a treadmill while watching. The important lesson is they move.

I'm so glad you've found this site and you've found short videos. That's a great thing. Try adding a bit more movement into your long days. Even using a bathroom break as a chance to get in a few squats will help.

Logging your food is good--log everything, even the stuff you want to pretend you didn't eat. After the 1st week of this, you'll see (as you already are) that your choices are not always the best, but you'll learn what your weaknesses are, where you need to make some changes. It's hard--but worth it.

I'm so happy you've found the site and our team! Welcome!!!

If we did all the things we are capable of doing, we would literally astound ourselves. 傍homas Edison

Hello - I am new to this site. I just started January 1st. My goal is to lose 35 pounds by the end of May. Long work hours have been a big excuse for me, but I sit behind a computer 10-13 hours a day and then have family responsibilities and then would "treat" myself by laying around until bed time. That must change. The short exercise videos are exactly what I need to establish a habit and logging food bring real awareness to how much I really do eat. I especially like the pie chart that shows the protein, carb, fat ratio. I have known I was carb heavy but this REALLY shows me what my choices are doing to my diet. I am really looking forward to improving my health habits and getting support from the Spark communities!

I am not a new member, but have not been here for a long time, so I thought I would say hello again. I have been on a weight loss journey my whole life, but after re-focusing again last year, I was able to lose some weight and maintain a consistent fitness routine. However, without tracking my food, my weight has crept back up a bit, so I'm back to what I know has worked for me.

Can't wait to meet my goals (trying to lose 35 lbs by January of 2016), and am excited to help others do the same!

Hello! I will turn 50 this year, wow! After 10 years, I am motivated to lose 35 pounds and become stronger. Since I started juicing and working out in the last 8 days, I have lost 9 lbs and I feel good! I am happy to see so many people with the same goals!

Hi everyone. Trying to get back on track with eating healthy and walking and getting rid of these extra pounds. It's not as easy as it used to be. But I'm trying. Since it's a new year, a perfect time to start again. Enjoying reading lots of posts.

Hi Kim,

Welcome to the team! Taking care of yourself is a priority and it's good that you see this as not optional. I always have to remind myself that no one else will take care of me--it's up to ME!

Good for you!

Hi Brenda--welcome back to SP and to the team.

It's been unusually cold here in California, so walking outside at night has been a challenge and I'm not always available during the day. Fortunately, for those who deal with the cold more often than I do--SP has some great cold weather workouts for indoors. There's so much we can do using just body weight. YouTube has great videos if you want something other than what SP has and most don't need much in terms of equipment.

You have a deadline for your goal and that's great---you should be able to achieve your goal by August!

If we did all the things we are capable of doing, we would literally astound ourselves. 傍homas Edison

I'm Kim, I've also been here before. I'm a 45 year old Mom of a grown child. I have about 30-35 pounds to drop. I have been sedentary for too long and I have to make changes and incorporate healthy lifestyles choices into my life - it is NOT optional! I worry that the longer I put this off the more difficult it will be. I know what to do, I just need the motivation and perseverance to do it. I'd love someone I can check in with daily for accountability. Feel free to PM me! :)

My name is Brenda and I've been here before. I need to stick with SP this time! When I record everything I do I hold myself accountable. As soon as I think I can do it on my own I start to eat the wrong things. I love exercise but I'm terrible with food. This year I need to focus on my food!! I'm 42, from Iowa and I don't enjoy working out in the cold so I will have to stick with indoor activities for now. Looking forward to spring when I can get outside and ride my new bike and start running again. I need to lose the 35 pounds and I hope I can reach this goal by the time I run my triathlon in August!! emoticon

Hi all, my name is Tim and after a couple of years of inactivity, I've decided to come back to Spark People. I live near Richmond, Va. In the town of Chester. I'm 46. I am looking forward to meeting you all and going after our goals together.

Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content.
I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need.
I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

Hi and happy New year! My name is Angelique and I'm an early 40 person who started a journey in January 2014 to reduce sugar intake to help drop some pounds. Basically a modified version of the ideal protein diet but without any of the packaged goods. I manged to drop 35 pounds last year without my usual commitment to exercise.

With 2015 here and a new YMCA membership in hand, this year I want to lose those last 20 pounds and develop some muscle in the process. I've let myself slip this last couple of weeks and wanted to see what would happen of I reintroduced more than 35 g of carbs a day and I have quickly discovered that the weight pops right back on. I knew this was going to be a lifestyle choice, but I had no idea how quickly my body would negatively respond to bread and pasta. Back to the vegetables for me!

I'm looking forward to having a support team as I have battled my weight my entire life and I know this last 20 pounds won't be easy. We can all do this together. Let's do it!

Welcome Wedgeang. I struggle with night time snacking too. You can set a goal to not eat after 10pm and once you've mastered that, move it down to 9. Or even say no snacking while watching tv. There are lots of articles here on how to take control of night time eating.

I've been reviewing my progress or lack of and realized that I have to not only work out, but I also have to WORK my program. The best nutrition/diet plan is the one you'll follow. Whether it's one program or a combo of a few...you have to find what works for you. The SP diet is a good one too. But the programs are only successful if we work them.

I used to be super fit as I raced road, mountain and cross bikes but now I own my own business and also teach in the evenings at a community college so the two jobs and stress has kept me from stating in shape or being able to get out and ride my bike like I want to. I am coming back to Spark to get back in shape so I can do the things I love to do!

I am trying to become a member of the 40 somethings team.

I am 46 and trying to lose 30 pounds. I lost more than 20 pounds about a year ago and gained it back, plus some. I haven't felt any motivation to get back to work on it. This site has already helped me drink more water, watch my calories and exercise. Hopefully, I'll keep going and keep the weight off.

I have 5 children, aged 11 and under - so I have to purposefully leave some other valuable task to exercise, and it's easy to neglect. Being self-disciplined about my diet is difficult for me as well.

I look forward to communicating with others who are on the same journey as I am and facing the same age issues.

God is my joy and my strength.

Hi! I am new again to Spark People and I'm going to try their diet this time. Anyone else doing it? I have been gaining and losing the same 10-20 pounds for years now and I'm so tired of this roller coaster, I want off! I am 47, have two teenagers and 1 husband and I need to lose 44 lbs to be at a healthy weight. I've recently been trying intuitive eating only to gain more weight UGH!!!! I guess my intuition is to eat too much ;-). Anyways rather than sit around feeling hopeless I'm going to jump in again and work on eating healthy and eating less. I've also recently started doing yoga and I'm loving it. There is a program online called Do Yoga With Me and they have lots of free recorded classes. My biggest struggle is figuring out how to eat at work. I am a preschool teacher and they want us to eat what the kids are eating. Although we don't really have to eat it we do have to serve ourselves and it is really hard not to eat good food when it is in front of you. Anyways I am glad to be back and getting started.

Linda

Hello,
I'm 45, relocated from Orlando to Alexandria VA 6 months ago. I'm taking a hiatus from working so there are no excuses. I'm in the planning, prepping stage hoping to set myself up for success starting Jan 5, 2015. I would like to do a triathlon this year, wear a pair of shorts in public, and most of all commit to fitness.

OK, I am returning after about a year off. Lost the first 25 lb about a year and a half ago but stalled for a very long time so i gave up to try something new. Now the weight is starting to creep back up again. I love hiking and backpacking but this summer when I went out on a few steep climbs(once going up a waterfall trail and once just going up a hill), I felt like I would never get to the top and had to stop several times. My husband even had to take some of my gear which for me is a big problem because then I don't feel like I am carrying my fair share of the burden.
So here I go back to the program that worked for at least awhile. Hopefully i will be able to find ways to bust through the inevitable plateaus.

Hi, I'm Kim and I'm thrilled to be 35lbs to goal! When I began I needed to lose 65lbs. I began taking Belviq Nov 3, 2014 and have had wonderful results with it. I hadn't been able to get out of the 170's for about 3 years; Fluctuating between 180's to the 170's. As of yesterday's weigh-in I am at 163.6, and this happened in less than a month. I just turned 45 in August (14) and am dating again for the first time in 6 years. I am also a graduate student, earning my masters degree: MSC/MFCT (master of science in counseling/marriage, family, child therapy), which means that I help people in thier relationships. I'm very excited to be out of the obese BMI range for the first time in years, and am now at the overweight range! Only people such as us would understand the joy at just being overweight :)

I look forward to meeting you all and hope we can become friends and have a very solid group with challenges and maybe mini-competetions.

Hi! Im Sarah.
I'm returning to this group, so thought I'd introduce myself again.
I'm starting my fitness and health year a month early so I don't pack on more during the holidays! Started with my first race (4 miler) on Thanksgiving, even though I'm not a runner and am 50 pounds overweight! My daughter challenged me and I made her ( and myself) proud, so that feeling will propel me through the start of the year. Looking forward to running again next Thanksgiving and seeing the difference!
My weight gain has been steady for the last three years, and I've tried many programs but just give up when I see no results. This time I'm going simple...track food and exercise and go for health without obsessing with the scale.

Hi team, my name is Vicky. I'm totally new to SparkPeople website, so I might not have done the right thing in replying to DeeAnn's post... But I'm sure I will get the hang of it soon.

I'm was born in The Netherlands, but live now on this beautiful island in the Meds. I'm almost 48 and find myself back to where I was 2 years ago! All my life I have struggled with my weight. But more so I have struggled with my health. Though I have always been active and was a regular gym-goer, I never seemed to be able to have a steady weight, so I figured there MUST be something wrong with my diet.7 years ago, after trying almost every fad diet that was in fashion, I found Clean Eating, which has turned my life around. I reached my target weight in 6 months, and I built lean muscles in the next 12 months and was extremely proud and happy with myself.

However, living on this island in the Meds, makes it difficult to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Food and wine is considered to be the backbone of a fulfilled life, and everybody lives to enjoy it as much as they can. The first question people ask you when they meet you is "what did you have to eat, and where did you enjoy it?" Though the Mediterranean cuisine is known for being one of the most healthiest diets, we usually eat out with friends and family, accompanied by loads of wine. And therein lays the problem. People over here are highly offended if you decline an invitation to go for dinner!

Moreover, this island is a holiday resort for the Northern part of Europe. This means 90% off ALL businesses are only open during the season. From April through October this island is a bustling holiday resort, but from November through March this island is deserted. This also means we have to work day and night all through the season, as there are NO jobs available in the off season. We have to make our money in 7 months to be able to live 12 months. In the holiday season I work on average 100 hours a week! That means for me: NO time to plan my meals, NO time to prep my meals, NO time to go to the gym or do any form of exercise, as I work 7 days a week, 14 hours a day for 7 months straight with no time off whatsoever! I have to rely on takeaways from our local restaurants and fast on the go healthy snacks from the supermarket. As you can imagine, in the holiday season I gain weight, which I fight very hard to get it off again in my off season.

Well in the past two years I went through some very rough times, and I was not motivated at all to work so hard in my off season to lose my gained weight. I just couldn't bring myself to get off the couch and exercise, or even make healthy meals. Besides being really tired and drained of energy after the long work season, I found myself in a depression. I couldn't even be bothered to get dressed or clean my apartment. All I did was stay on the couch, or on our balcony in the sun, and eat. So when this year's working season in April 2014 started, not only didn't I lose the gained weight from the year before, I gained even more!

Now I'm at the beginning of my off season again. I'm tired of being tired. I'm tired of buying new bigger clothes again. Three years ago I threw all the bigger size clothes out and swore to myself I would NEVER be big again! Well here I am again. I need to get back on track, both food wise and exercise wise. I had my three weeks of winding down after a busy work season. I had my three weeks of sleeping 16 hours a day to catch up. Now it's time to get back into action. But it's so hard to start again! I hope with this group I'll be inspired to get back on track and keep going until I'm back where I was two years ago: a happy, healthy slim version of me.

Hello this is DeeAnn here! I used to be super skinny in high school and even several years after that. Then after my third child the weight just kept coming on and I didn't know what to do about it as I had never had to worry about it. Years and years went by and I ended up weighing 187.4 pounds when I decided to do something about it. I am small framed and 5'6" and really didn't think I was as heavy as I was until I lost 54 pounds and went from a size 16/18 to 4/5. I felt amazing and was so proud of myself and swore I was never going back there again. Once I met my goal I decided to take a month off as a reward. BIG MISTAKE!!! The month has pretty much turned into 2 years and I am back up 35 pounds :( I still ran here and there but I didn't exercise consistently anymore. Then this summer my goal was to get back into it and run my first 1/2 Marathon. But.... I ended up with issues with my calves and am working with the doctor to get that fixed and am hoping to start running right after Christmas (doctors orders to not start until then) with an overall goal to run the Ragnar Snowmass Colorado Trail in June of 2015!!!

If it doesn't challenge you, it doesn't change you!
