Welcome Renee!

Hopefully you're getting more familiar with the site by now. It's a bit overwhelming at first. Perry had some great suggestions for you.

Try looking at it from a PC, it does make a difference. there's so much information on the site. Hope you love it like we all do!

Welcome PerryLHenry

You're right, it does take a bit to get used to the site.

There is a tutorial and welcome guide that I recommend every check out (see the welcome email).

Plus setting up your account from a phone versus a pc makes a difference. Once you have an account, you have the option of letting others add you as a friend, make comments on your page, etc.

Hey..

I have been on spark since 2007, I have lost, maintained and gained at different times. I have recently come back after a brief affair with MFP..LOL. But Spark is where I experienced my biggest success and received the most support.

For the past two years I worked really hard to get ready for my 5 year wedding renewal. It was worth it because I felt absolutely beautiful on that day and throughout our long honeymoon. emoticon . So I have decided to go for the gold and work towards my ultimate goal.
So here is to..making it happen! emoticon

Aloha!

I'm a long-time Sparker but trying to get back into it, yet again - because it's such a fantastic website! I've gained a bit, and have lost some on my own over the last 6 months. I'm now in the "25-49 Lbs to Lose" category (yay!) so I thought I'd join this group now! :) I'll try to be active in it.

Happy November & good luck to all!

Hi Renee,

I have been using the site for 9 weeks. It took me a couple of weeks before I committed to it. I have used myfitnesspal in the past. I have used myfitnesspal on and off for a decade. It has great trackers but no real community of support. I like that you can find people here who are dieting the way you want to diet or not dieting at all just working on general fitness and a healthy lifestyle. You can ask questions and actually get answers. I use both the app and the desk top. There are some desktop features that are not available on the app. (they are available on the mobile site though so if you are phone or tablet only you can still get there. Good Luck. You can do it, Perry

Hi everyone. I'm Renee. Somewhat overwhelmed or maybe skeptical about the site / my own success. I am desperate to drop about 30 pounds. I likely will ask a lot of questions and look for a lot of encouragement - I will apologize in advance, lol!

hello everyone!
my name is ariel and i'm 43. i've been off and on here on Spark for years and it has always really helped me reach my fat loss goals. the last two years though i have put on 35 pounds after suffering from some injuries. i'm still recovering so i am still unable to exercise like i used to, but i'm so ready to try to lose this weight!! i miss being lean and fit! i don't have problems with my motivation to exercise, it's my motivation to stick to a daily calorie limit. dieting is so hard for me but i really want to do this.
good luck everyone and TGIF! =D

Effort is between you, and you, and nobody else.

Hi, I kind of new here. I used to use sparkpeople app on windowsphone. Back then I managed to lose 12 kg.

For some reasons, I stop exercising and relapse to my bad habit. Now almost all those weight is back. When I realized it, I kinda lose motivation to get back at my routine. It's depressing to see all the hard work goes to the trash bin.

But I want to try once more. I have RA and all these extra weight hurt my joints.

Hi, my name is Paula. I have been on S.P. for years and I successfully lost all the weight I wanted before my 40th birthday but once that birthday passed I just couldn't find the same motivation to stick with my healthy habits. I'm hoping joining a team where everyone is a similar age dealing with similar problems it will help me get and stay motivated.

Here is a little Public Service Announcement- if you are doing everything "right" get your hormones checked *including testosterone. I recently found out my body was basically making no testosterone and my hormone imbalance was making me feel terrible, gain lots of body fat, and feel like I was "going through menopause" but that wasn't what it was!

Hi everyone.. Starting today. Hoping I can get some exercise as my Achilles tendon has been acting up for a few weeks now. I recently starts a bowling league with my boyfriend and I think that may be causing me some problems, and the extra weight I've gained recently.

Wishing everyone else luck who are just starting as well. emoticon

Hello. Are you using the App or Desktop or Both? I highly encourage going through the beginning steps on the desktop. I am 4 weeks in and really like using the combination of both.

I found this group about a week ago. So far it seems positive and I like it. My goal is to take this really slow.

Hi I am back with a new login to lose the 40 ish lb I have regained in the past 18months. I have hit my maintenance goal once, then totally lost focus.... but as long as I keep on picking myself up, then hopefully sucess will stick.

Other than that I am a 45 yo mother of 2 teens (17 & 18) both girls. I work full time, I am studying. Last year before I totally gave up trying I completed 5 x 10k runs, a half marathon and 3 sprint triathlons. Now my knees are telling me don't you even dare think about running emoticon

My hubby is a sick man, and a constant reminder to live life while I have it, because health should be cherished.

the plan is to eat better, and less of it - less quantity more quality, to start exercising again and aim to hit next years tri season with a couple of sprints and an Olympic distance if I can work up the stamina.

Yep it is definitely that.... probably ......

Hello. I have been wanting to lose 30+ pounds for years now, but have experienced much difficulty making the commitment to do so. I saw the other day though something about the difference between "wanting to" and "deciding to", and realize I need to do the latter for anything great to happen. My cholesterol is 235, which is my primary motivator right now to lose weight and get "in shape". Well that and to be able to buy smaller, cuter clothes of course!

My name is Maria and I'm 48. Have to lose 40 to 45 pounds to get to my marathon weight which is believe it or not between 145 to 150. Yes there are runners that are small and thin!
Been here about 3 weeks but this is the first time I noticed the groups tab. Was using the app all the time!

Hi Noel! Sparkpeople is a great place to lose weight and find accountability. You just have to be active on it. I did really well before when I was active on the site, but then a job change happened and I wasn't able to be as active. That's when I tanked and started gaining it all back.

Hang in there! There's tons of great information and ideas (and people!). Good luck!

Greetings. I'm a 48 year old woman, looking for motivation to lose some unwanted pounds. I came into my 40's a trim woman and I'd like to feel that good again! My job keeps me active - I usually have 8000 steps done by 3:00, but when I get home, I want to relax, have a few drinks and by then, I'm uninspired to do much of anything....

Hoping to add some accountability to my eating habits and increase my output.
Thanks! Have a great day!

Hello. I am 45 year old. I am a mother of two boys and a wife. I do not work at this time due to the fact that my husbands new job moves us around a lot. I have been a yo yo dieter all my life. I was the lowest I had ever been when I meet my husband 14 years ago. I had two kids, quit smoking and went through major depression and gained an extreme amount of weight. Like 140 plus pounds. I have Dieted three times in the last 3 years.. first time I lost 20 pounds, second time 14 pounds and recently I have lost 48 pounds. I started this program because I have been at a stand still now for almost two months and can not seem drop any more weight. I did eat plenty but all low cal.. so i wasn't reaching the mark of 1200 calories. Positive notes: i can wrap a regular towel around my body again after the shower, I have started to Jog which I havent done since required to in high school, I am down a total of 82 pounds and I have just reached the over weight status for my BMI instead of being labeled obese. If anyone has any suggestions on how to kick start my loosing weight... I would love to hear it! Thanks Got another 35 to go!

Hello. My name is Kristin. I am a 47 year old wife and mother/stepmother of six kids from ages 8 to 26. The three youngest (boys aged 8,9, & 17) still live at home. In the last 12 years, I have gone from 145 lbs to 185 lbs and down to my current weight of 170 lbs. I have a goal of losing 40 lbs by my birthday in March. I'm not sure how to begin successfully, or how to turn what's in my head into action. I'm looking forward to learning from you all.

Hi everyone,

I just turned 40 over the summer. I'm in the process of losing 40 lbs. It's been a long hard journey for this past year, but I finally found what works for me which is doing IF (intermittent fasting) and I recently joined a 60-day challenge to kick my effort into high gear for this fall.

Looking forward to meeting everyone here and having good discussions

The challenges on SP are usually challenges for one. Unless you join a team challenge page. What the SP challenges are designed to do l is help you understand how to work out effectively, make healthier choices, live with chronic illness..like diabetes, walk more.

I'm not much into the group challenge pages and teams as my schedule doesn't really let me participate in the ways they want. But I've tried them...and they can be fun.

I do like the individual challenges though. You should try one.

It's not about how bad you want it...it's about how hard you're willing to work for it

I have been on Spark since this last spring. I am still trying to figure out the community aspect of Spark. I do not understand the challenges or these pages. Completely confusing.
I have 32 pounds to lose. I lost 40 pounds in 2003 and kept it off for 8 years. Some health issues and age caused me to gain 20 of it back. I am trying to get things stabilized and get back on track to not only lose that weight but get to my goal that I never hit back in 2003.

I'm still somewhat new to SP. New here too. Browsing around right now and still learning the site. Actually started logging my food (which I hate), but I know that it makes weight loss successful.

I am a former Weight Watchers member, receptionist and leader. I lost 72 pounds back in 2010. Since then, I have had a few life changes and almost 20 of those pounds have found their way back.

My work schedule does not allow time for meetings etc, and I find that MFP has a lot of inactive boards. So I decided to give Spark People a shot (recommended by a friend.)

I am 43, mother of three grown children, and I would like to lose 30 pounds in about 6 months.

*My 40s are going to be GREAT!*

Hello...new to spark, was on loseit and before that myfitnesspal, I liked them both for different reasons...but wanted to try something new with hopes that the things I loved about the above 2 would be put together here. Anyway..I have lived in Los Angeles most of my life, I also lived in Florida for 5 years. I currently work out at LA Fitness 5 to 7 days a week....I have been on bodybuilding.com now for about a year and use an app there to track my workouts and actually do different workout programs via that..it's been a SLOW process, but is picking up now :)

Hi everyone! My name is Teena. I am 45 and have been married (for a second time ) for 2 years. I have a 11 yr old son, 12 yr old stepson, and a 13 yr old daughter. I gained weight after my divorce and have slowly packed on weight ever since. I am tired of being overweight but I am finding it hard to find motivation to exercise. Any encouragement/advice is appreciated!

Hello! I'm happy to be here with all of you! I'm 41, and a somewhat empty nester of two stepchildren (one still lives at home with us part time). I'm looking for an accountability partner, someone with whom I can chat virtually so that we can share and encourage each other. I like to "keep it real", so I'm not needing a cheerleader to dole out platitudes. I would like to find someone who is down to earth and sincere who is also wanting some accountability. If this sounds like something that would be helpful for you, send me a message!

Howdy! I'm a mom to 2 (a 9 yr old and a 15 yr old) and wife of a firefighter. We live in the San Francisco North Bay Area.
I've lost weight successfully in the past, just have a tough time keeping it off. I lost 30 lbs doing WW most recently and then started a pretty stressful job, didn't help it was a bakery. :/
I'm working a less stressful job now, but it's still semi stressful.
I need to start with baby steps like water and tracking....I have about 40 pounds to lose but again, baby steps. I'm now heavier than I've EVER been in my life. Boo.
Looking forward to support and encouragement to do this again.
Thanks!

Hi, my name's Jennifer & I live in NE Georgia. I am working on consistency with exercise and my diet. I eat fairly good food at least 90% of the time, I avoid processed food as a general rule, but overindulge. So I'm working on paring down the amount I eat at breakfast & dinner. I feel like lunch should be the largest meal. As far as exercise, while I work on consistency, I'm focused on doing yoga or walking every day even if it's only for 10-15 minutes. Once I have that on point, then I'll look into increasing duration & exertion.
As I get older, and watch some of my relations get older, I'm really seeing the importance of remaining active. Aside from the health benefits, the continued mobility into old age is crucial to happy longevity.

Hi Shelly

Welcome to the team. Look at our team forum and then the chat forum for a great article on weight loss and re-gain.

Sparkpeople can definitely help you...there are tons of articles and videos on the site and the people on the team are very supportive.

Weight loss over 40 is harder because our metabolism slows down. So nutrition and exercise become very important. Nutrition (I've hard, is the most important thing).

It's not about how bad you want it...it's about how hard you're willing to work for it

Hi, I'm Shelly, 41 years old, 3 kids. Lost the "baby weight" after the 3rd, but then family issues and it all came back plus some. Looking to start by losing 40 pounds to get under 200. Would love suggestions from other over 40's, as I used to be able to track calories and that was enough...not anymore. I hope Spark can provide the insight and support to help me be successful again, as I've been trying, but getting discouraged.

hi - i'm a brand new member - with about 38lbs to lose. I think so anyways...i'm not sure what a healthy adult weight for me even is yet :) I'm already super active and I eat really cleanly...have a few metabolic issues that make it hard to lose weight, but I also know I could be more mindful of little snacks and extra calories....that is why I joined to help keep myself on point (becuase when I am really on point...i can lose weight). Coming into my 40th year as an athlete, I don't want to put strain on my joints, I want to get some of my faster times! Any other runners out there - say hi! I generally eat pretty low carb as that helps with cravings...but that isn't always compatible with distance running (at least for me!) Good luck on the journey everyone!

Hi I'm Debbie. I'm 44 and consider myself a work in progress. I prefer an uplifting supportive environment over drama and gossip. I do have gained 20 pounds in the last 3 years and fear if I don't do something that will double before I know it. I used to be a regular runner and strength trainer, have done many running events (from 5k's to obstacle course racing) but lost motivation. No one close to me (sister, bff's) is into fitness. I used to give it my all during training and since falling out of my fitness routines, my friends try to be helpful but they just don't get it. Saying things like "one bite won't hurt" or "well you look great I don't think you need to lose weight" are not what I need to hear to get back into the game! I finally told one friend last week that I feel awful; I don't like what I see when I look in the mirror and I don't like how I feel and I'm the only one that can change that. I told her I needed her to hold me accountable. I'll let you know how that goes ;) Anyway, I'm happy to be a part of this group. I hope to provide and receive the support that makes this journey successful.

Everything we do in life is a choice...I can't blame others for my thoughts or actions.

Hi everyone,
I'm Susan, 41 years old and mother to 3 kids, ages 5, 3, and 3. I lost 50 lbs about 15 years ago and had an active lifestyle, including running and doing some races. I also smoked at the time, so I can't say I had an active, HEALTHY, lifestyle. Then I met my husband, quit smoking, had kids and am now heavier than where I was the first time. I've just started running again about 5 weeks ago and am really enjoying it - my goal is to do a 5K by the end of the year. Muscle memory is amazing! My kids are active, they would rather be outside than watching tv, which is awesome, but it means I need to have a lot of energy throughout the day. I'm extremely motivated this time around to achieve (and maintain) a healthy lifestyle, but this time, I'm doing it for me AND my family. I love my experience on SP, and I'm 75% confident that I can make positive changes. The other 25% appears at random times but I'm hoping to see it more often :)

Hi. My name is Peggy. I've been on spark about 3 weeks and just now found the email saying I was a member of this group. I've been married for 24 years. Have two kids 27 and 22. I also have 4 grandkids from the ages of 2 to 6. I've always struggled with my weight. Ten years ago I got to my ideal weight by doing to no carb diet. When I stopped I gain the 40 pounds I had lost back and another 20. Last summer I started to lose weight and got 15 off. Went on vacation gained 5 back. That was Oct. Started spark and down 8. I hope to lose another 8 before my birthday. Look forward to the motivation from others. I'm an emotional eater and Junk food junkie, so I need all the help I can get.

Hi Denise

Welcome to the team!

Glad you're getting back on track. Lucky you to have a home gym!!!

We have a gym on the grounds and I'm lucky to have one at work too. So I've really got no excuses when I have access to 2 gyms.

Hello Everyone,

My name is Denise, I'm 45 years old, married for 20 years and have a 15 year old son and 28 year old Step Daughter. For the first time ever this year my weight shot up to over 200lbs. and I pretty much gave up on myself and my weight two years ago when I cancelled my membership to the gym after my daughter moved out and lost my workout partner (Excuses... Excuses!) I've been eating horrible and as a result have tipped the scales and decided to make a change. It's been two weeks that the light switch went off AGAIN and I realized that I'm not getting any younger and the scale will only get worse if I don't commit and make a change. I started reading how to EAT CLEAN on Pinterest and cut out white flour, bad carbs and sugar (my weakness!) from my diet. I'm down 4lbs and have a long and steady road ahead of me. I don't expect miracles and need to learn to be patient with my progress.. SLOW AND STEADY.... I need to stay focused on my diet and keep my body moving! I started working out again and I have to say after the first day two weeks ago, it's getting better... I'm doing cardio 30 min. & Strength Training 30 min. 4-5 days a week in my garage where my husband set up a home gym... I won't give up... ON ME!

Denise

REFUSING TO GIVE UP ON ME!

Hi everyone. I'll be 47 next month. Mother of 4 kids, work full time. Need to make changes and become more active. Was in the military so at one time was very physically fit - not so much any more. Disappointed in myself so the time is now...my goal is 40 pounds down. Looking forward to meeting people here and being supportive of one another.
