8WKCHALL - Welcome to the team! It seems you're well on your way to a healthy lifestyle. As for those recipes, maybe you can start a weekly recipe thread and share some of those with the team.

Hi, just joined the team. I've been making incremental changes for about 9 months now and I'm down 20 pounds -- looking for the next 20 now with more focus.

I've been steadily adding more exercise to my life. I'm walking 10 miles a week (7 miles on the weekend, then 3 miles one night), but looking to increment that by an additional 3 miles once a week plus some strength training. However, I've learned that when I try to commit myself to too many changes (or too drastic a change), I will give up on it. Slow changes, minor adjustments and improvements, work best for me -- because then I stick with them.

Where I can help: As a former chef, I'm full of ideas on how to prepare meals that naturally blend into 'planned overs' for the next day. I have meal planning templates, websites, ideas, etc. and I'm great for what you can make ahead and freeze so you have something delicious and homemade for dinner. (Don't get turned off by the 'chef' thing - most of what I do for me is much easier than what I would ever have done at the restaurant.)

DDONOVA - Welcome to the team! There's lots of support around here; also other mothers in their forties with small kids, so they know what challenges you're facing.

Hello All,
I am a 40 year old mother of 4 little ones who range in ages from 2-9. I have successfully lost weight in the past but, after my 3rd child I kept some weight on. Then I got pregnant with my 4th. Since her birth 2 years ago I lost about 23 lbs and was within 6 lbs of my goal. I lost a ton of weight when my husband was deployed. Then he came back (that was 6 months ago) and I have put about 12 lbs back on. I want to FINALLY reach my goal. I know how to lose weight but, I am hoping by using the social aspects of SPARK I can stay motivated.

Each day provides with with a new opportunity to be successful.

Welcome to the team! To keep from getting overwhelmed by it all, start small. Just use the nutrition tracker for a week, then add the fitness tracker. Slowly explore other Spark things. It gets easier and less confusing if you try taking small steps.

Hi - I am new to this and a little overwhelmed by all the stuff on this website! Trying to lose 23 lbs, already lost 7 since the middle of January. I find it hard to stay motivated, but maybe sparkpeople will help me out. Any good tips for staying motivated are much appreciated!

Hello 40-something's! I re-joined Spark People last night after a 6-year hiatus. In 2008, Spark People helped me to lose 20 lbs. It was such a fun and rewarding experience. I wish I had stuck with the commitment and motivation, but I didn't, so now I'm back.
emoticon.
I'm excited to be part of a team with similar weight-loss goals. The support and accountability is great motivation for me. I look forward to getting fit with you.

Hi! I am a wife and mom from VA. I sit at work all day and go home to cook, clean up, then to bed not too longg after. I am 4'10 and weigh 126 lbs which is too much for my height. I went to a dietician and he wants me to average 300 calories a meal and 100 for snacks. Suggested to get to my weight loss goal in a month and a half of 1 -2 lbs a week; I have cut out snacks. The only free time I have to fit in my recommended 30-40 min a day cardio is during my hour lunch. I speed walk, run in an empty dept and run up and down stairs. I want to get to at least 105 lbs in the future. Can this be done with this amt of exercise? Warmer weather will help being able to walk when I get home and need to find time to walk or ride bikes too....

Hi again Jen!

If you want, you can add your name to your signature so it's always there and you don't have to introduce yourself all the time on here. If I'm not mistaken, you do it in settings/profile. It will come up with your ticker after each post.

Daily Chat: Just go to the Team main forum page by clicking "40 Somethings with 10-24 pounds to lose" and join the team if you are not already on it. Once you join the team you will see all the topics you can get involved in. If you are already on the team just join in on the Daily Chat by clicking on that topic.

Also, I'm not sure you want it this way, but currently, you don't allow the public access to your SparkPage. So I can't get to your page and add you as a friend. Again, that access will be in your profile settings I think, or if you click to "edit" your page you'll see a list of settings in the top right section of the screen which allow or block access.

It took me weeks to get used to the site. But my favorite part is encouragement from my Spark friends and I like to encourage others too. I hope you get all the kinks worked out!

Thanks for the welcome Tina. I should mention that my name is Jen. Sorry for the confusion! I did a cleanse the first week of Feb. So, that helped with my weight loss. Now, I'm working hard on tracking and not snacking at night (my biggest pitfall). Please let me know how to join the daily chat. I'd love to get to know everyone here. Also, any tips to motivate me on how to get moving. I live in freezing cold MA. So, I'm in hibernation mode.

Hi, I'm new here. I'm 44 and noticed over the years that my weight slowly crept up on me. I'm hoping to stay inspired and motivated through Spark People. I've been tracking for about a month and I have lost 12 lbs. I don't know how the message forum works, but if someone could tell me how to put a weight goal timeline like everyone has in their siggy, that would be awesome. Happy to be here!

Hi MAJUMA and GEORGIESGIRL!

I love that this place is becoming so lively! I hope everyone sticks around for the long haul!

I'm motivated mostly by coming onto Spark and being part of an active community with similar goals. When I see my Spark friends took 10,000 steps in a day or did their 5K training workout or completed 30 minutes of strength training, it makes me want to keep up with them. I have a FitBit tracker too which is quite a motivating little device, I have to say. I've been known to go up and down the stairs 20 times at 10 pm if I am 300 steps away from my daily goal or I'm just short the amount of calories I had wanted to burn on that day.

Welcome to all the new 40 Somethings! It's great to have you!

Tina~

I just joined sparkpeople because I've gained 5 lbs since the holidays! I did weight watchers 3 yrs ago and lost 30 lbs. I've been slowly gaining it back. So far, I've gained a total of 13 back. My goal is to loose 18 lbs by July. I'm married with 3 kids. I like to work out. My biggest problem is my diet. I have a major sweet tooth. I tend to "snack" while making my kids lunches and while making dinner. I'm looking for motivation and encouragement to break these and other bad habits.

Hi, all. I'm Sara, I'm 40, and I have 18 pounds to lose. I live in Littleton, CO and I teach private music lessons (piano and voice). I also just started substitute teaching, so I've got a lot of transition happening right now! With spring approaching, I am feeling motivated to get outside and MOVE. :) [I am hoping to develop a love of running, running and I have never been very good friends. I really want to like it --- I probably just have to make myself do it, right? Yeah, that's what I thought.... ;)] I am married and have an 8-year-old daughter; I love reading, crocheting and singing. I'm hoping that I can develop healthier habits and that I can be of some help to others who might need some support. We can do this, you guys!

Thoughts become things.

Hi everyone!

My name is Nicole and I'm so glad I found this team! It looks wonderfully supportive and active. I was a member of another 40-something team and there was almost no support on that. I just recently turned 40 and I still have about 17 pounds to lose. I've been on Spark for a little over 2 years now and I've lost 33 pounds to date.

I'm looking forward to getting to know all of you and making some inspiring new Sparkfriends! (as I hope I can inspire others as well!)

It is attitude, not circumstance, that makes success possible in even the most unlikely conditions.

That's the range I got from SparkPeople, and also from a nutritionist I saw, so I hope it's right! Interesting that you found eating at the higher end occasionally was good - I will keep that in mind. Thanks!

JASMINETA - Welcome to the team! 1200 calories may not be the correct range for you; I know it depends on your starting weight. I found that sometimes it helps if I eat at the lower end of my calorie range some days and then higher (1500 or more) on a day or two every week.

Hi,

I'm a 43 year old professional, married to a professional, and a mother of four kids, aged 11-3. Since my youngest turned 3, I figure it's time I stop blaming my last 15 pounds on the baby weight I haven't taken off yet. Finding time is a struggle for me, but I want to get back to a weight I''m happier with. On a good week I get 3 workouts at the gym and 2 yoga classes, but it seems there's always another commitment to interfere with at least 1-2 of those times.

I tried tracking last year but despite being really careful, eating 1200 calories a day, I was only losing 0.3 pounds a week and found it really discouraging. I'm trying again though, having realized that if I'd stuck with that last year, I'd be down my fifteen pounds by now. So I'm mentally preparing for a long journey, and hoping that by joining boards this time, it will help me keep my motivation up.

Welcome to the team, Sal! It sounds like you have a good plan going. The nutrition tracker can help you with those steps. Start using it faithfully to see exactly what you're eating - it's an eye-opener, and I often don't eat something because I don't want to see it on my tracker!

Hi, my name is Angie and I am new to Sparks People and to the team. I am a new mom who has lost over 40 lbs since having my baby, but seem to be struggling to lose the rest. My real good friend, Jinx, told me how inspiring and motivating this group is so I thought I would join. I am looking forward to meeting everyone and hearing about their weight loss journey.

Hugs,

~Angie~

Welcome Elise!

It sounds like you could be the one offering us tips! Great job on your 3 pounds.

I guess if I had some pertinent advice to give, it would be that balance is the key to your health. Trying to do too much at once will throw you off, sabotage your efforts and ultimately discourage you from reaching your goals. It is the reason people yo-yo when they diet.

If you learn to find a healthy balance in your life, you will reach your goals in a reasonable amount of time and then maintain that lifestyle for the rest of your life. I know you've heard this before. We all have. But I find it to be the single most important lesson I have learned on my 3 year journey to better health. I intend for it to be a 30 or 40 year journey when all is said and done.

Best of luck!
Jinx~

Welcome to all the new members - I myself am new "sort of". I was part of the community about a year ago. I have gained a few pounds since my departure, although I have never stopped working out. I have always worked out 5-6 days a week, but I am beginning to steadily put on weight. I need a jump start and change what I do - my body has become very efficient at doing my exercise - TOO efficient. My age may have something to do with it too, as my metabolism is probably slowing to a crawl, so I am looking for new and different ideas.

Hi everyone. I was on Spark People in 2006. Lost quite a bit of weight since then but now picked up 20 again and it seem to be very slow going or none at all. I'm hoping that if I get back to tracking and "seeing" what I do as well as going back to the gym, it might help. Being over 40 does not help either!!

Hello Y'all

I am new today. I am tired of being out of shape and being a couch potato. I had a bad fall in 2011 that caused me to have a pretty bad neck injury resulting in neck surgery and nerve damage on the left side of my body. I have using that as an excuse to not exercise and I can feel my body getting flabbier and flabbier because of it. Sooo, I found sparkpeople and I am on my way. This is my first day! emoticon

Hi all! Yep ... my latter 40's seem to be halting weight loss through calorie restriction alone - it will be nice to be with people who have experienced the "What the? ... Where did that extra weight come from"?! syndrome. LOL Would love to hear from ya!

Hi!

Just got started on Spark People yesterday. I lost my first 20 on my own 3 years ago, the next 20 on WW 2 years ago but I put 8 of that back on which takes me to my current weight of 168 and size a 12. I'm here to shed the rest (about 20,) fit comfortably into a size 8 and feel my best and healthiest ever. I think I will join the 10 in 10 challenge. I plan to use many of the tools here. It's been fun perusing the site and learning all it has to offer, a little overwhelming but I'll get there. Happy to be on board!

Hi Everybody---
I just joined SparkPeople with a goal toward become more fit and losing some weight. I'm going to be turning 50 in April and, although I'm not really wrapped up in the number, it does present a milestone date that has made me be a bit more reflective. I needed to join this "40 somethings" group now as I soon will be ineligible! emoticon
I really do like the food tracking and fitness tracking that SparkPeople makes so easy to do... It helps me to be more self-aware...

GRETCHENPETE - Don't give up!! Yes, you may have gained some weight back, but when you're laid up, there isn't a lot you can do about that. It is NOT the whole 100 pounds you lost; it's a fraction of it, and even if you did gain it back YOU CAN LOSE IT AGAIN!! Just ease into it; don't try to go all out and risk injuries!! Work out 10 minutes a day for a start, and log your food.

Hello, I turned 40 this summer and after a year of surgeries and setbacks, I am here to get back on track. I had weight loss surgery a little over 5 years ago and successfully lost over 100 lbs. In the past year I've put 30 back on. I miss the feeling I had a couple years ago where I felt strong and confident. Being laid up for most of 2013 really turned me into a lump and I hate this feeling. Am finally at the point where physical activity is again possible without injuring myself but I feel like I'm starting over from when I was 100 lbs heavier. Frustrating that I can't just jump back into my fitness level from 2 years ago.

Hello Team, I'm 41 and this my second "go" at sparkpeople. I'm here for the motivation, because it's really a lifestyle change which I need... regular exercise, eating properly... I joined this team as my goal is to lose 10% of my weight (17.3 pounds) and then some... We are traveling to Portugal in August and I need to feel comfortable in a tank top and shorts!

Hi everyone! I'm Carol and have lost 80 pounds over the past year and now am down to that last dreaded 20 pounds. I'm working a low-carb/fat, high-protein program and hope to lose the last 20 by summer. I am a Happy Homemaker to my loving husband and our three girls, two are in college, my baby only has one more year of High School. I'm an avid reader, and addicted to HGTV and Foodnetwork. I love to cook and bake -- with an emphasis on healthier family meals. I look forward to getting to know all of you!
God Bless You!

Hi! I just joined spark people about a week ago. I'm new to teams and forums so I hope I did this correctly and am not posting in the wrong place. I don't know how I even stumbled upon the Spark site but I am LOVING IT! It makes things so much easier and fun! I am turning 42 on the 27 of Feb. and I'm trying to lose about 25 lbs. I am also trying to create a healthy permanent lifestyle for myself and my family because cancer and heart disease run in my family. I've been working hard to do it and having fun too! Today is a good day emoticon

I was a member of Sparkpeople a few years ago and then life got crazy and I stopped. Now I need to lose about 25 pounds, hopefully by summer, and I know that SP can offer me the support and accountability I need to reach my goals. So, here's to another go at it.

Note to all of us with 10-24 to lose. I get really tired of people looking at me and saying "oh, you don't need to lose any weight, you're just fine" I am glad to have a place where I can be where there is no judging. I think it is just as bad for people to judge me comparing to themselves. I feel like they may think I a egotistical and want the perfect body. I don't want the perfect body, I want mine.

Tobie -

My favorite thing is Dr. Pepper! I can enjoy two 44 oz cups of it a day at my office! I stopped that at the beginning of the year. Do I miss it? YES! But, as I managed my calories and nutrition intake throughout the day at first I "budgeted" enough leftover calories for a 12oz can of Dr. Pepper. Now I just carry a can of Diet Cherry Dr. Pepper in my laptop bag. If I need it, it's there, if I don't, I drink water.

It's been two weeks for me and yesterday I was dying for sweets. I ate a bunch of dried fruit and it seemed to satisfy me.

Hello, I use to be a SparkPeople member years ago but never did anything with it. I am back because I am now determined to get back in shape and old enough to know that it works better when you have a support system that understands you. thanks for being there.

Tobie,

Great first step! Recognizing the issue is always the first step to making corrections.
I myself was horribly addicted to Pepsi at one time. When I was finally able to make the switch to diet soda, I lost twenty pounds in a month. No lie. That's how much damage all that sugar does. Have I completely given up sugar? No. But I have cut back quite a bit. It can be done, honest.

Hi-
I've been on Spark for a while, but I usually get distracted and stop before I see any results. I would love to lose 20 pounds before summer. 1 pound a week would be so great. But I have this horrible addiction to Coca-Cola that I just can't seem to break. Soda and sugar seem to control my life at the moment and I feel utterly helpless and depressed because of it.

Hi everyone.
I just found my way back to sparkpeople after a few years off.
I had gained back my weight, picked up bad habits again and need to start over.
I know what to do but am having a hard time getting myself on the right track.
I'm here for all of your support.

Hello, everyone! I've technically been on SparkPeople for awhile, but this is the first time I'm actually logging in, tracking and using the program!

I've struggled with weight issues my entire adult life, but last year, I lost 35lbs, and I'm determined to keep it off. I'd actually like to lose about 20 more!

So here I am, ready to start and stay strong! emoticon

Hi everyone! I'm new to the team and excited that I found the site. My goal is to loose 20 pounds and keep it off. I have been working out several times a week since May 2013, with my personal trainer, and have seen good results. She encouraged me to watch my diet. I can already see a few areas where I need to make changes. Although I generally eat healthy, tracking my food intake is revealing what I need to change.

I hope to give/get support and encouragement and have fun using this site.

Today is the day I will meet my goals! I hope you do too!

Hello all!
This is my 2nd time on Sparkpeople. I did great the first time, and always encouraged any friends to join. But despite all I learned and how happy I was, I got off track. It isn't always enough to KNOW what you should do... support, community and accountability mean a lot as well and that's what I lost when I got off Sparkpeople... so I'm back and excited to get started! :)

Hey all,

not new but been gone for a good while--busy having two kids and teaching. Finally taking the bull by the horns and getting back to me and who I was before my first pregnancy. Determined and also worried that being 46 will make this significantly harder than it was before. Determined none the less.

Hello everyone,

I've been missing in action for a long time. It's a new year so it's a new beginning. emoticon I'm coming back to what was working. I intend to keep up with tracking what I'm eating and what i'm doing as far as fitness. Just wanted to say hello to the group and that i'm looking forward to the way ahead.

Hi. I just wanted to introduce myself. I'm working on cooking healthy meals for my husband and I. I have a new app called "Menu Board" where I have been planning my weekly menus. The app generates the shopping list off the recipe and even sorts it by grocery aisle for me. The app also syncs with my phone, iPad and computer as well as my husband's devices. He can see what is for dinner or add things to the grocery list. I love it! I was excited to find that all of the Spark Recipes I'm finding on here can download to my Menu Board app. Too good to share! Happy cooking!

Stop by and say hi!

I can totally relate to a lot of you ladies. I find the last pounds harder and harder to lose as I get older. I am 41 and a mother of 2 teenagers. I have gained and lost these 20-25 pounds off and on throughout my entire life. I have done it the good way and the bad way. Doing it the bad way (not eating or if eating not much) only to find it come back twice as fast once I start eating regularly. The good way then get off track and go on Chocolate and snack binges from anywhere from the weekend to a month or two. My issue is to stay consistant and not tell myself that I can fall off the wagon the entire day and begin again tomorrow. It doesn't work. I fall off and stay off for a couple days at least! So if I indulge I plan to eat better the remainder of the day and not do it again the next day. This is a new year and I plan to change my way of thinking and stay consistant to build myself into a healthy active woman and not turn into a fat old lady.

Hi, I'm Deb and I will be 41 in March and I have about 20# to lose. I have three children, a business to run, as well as my household. I am VERY busy and HATE exercising so those two excuses have kept me sedentary for 20 years. My boyfriend, 54, has lost 35# and my son, 22, has lost over 70#. My daughter, 9, wants to lost a few pounds (she could stand to lose maybe 5 as she is getting a little belly on her) so it is definitely time I get on the band wagon. I need a lot of encouragement and motivation. Someone to check in with... a weightloss buddy! :) I joined Sparkpeople a few days ago and love it so far. I can't wait to plug in what I've eaten and what I've done for exercise. I hope this is to be a good start of a new way of life!
