Hi there. I was shocked to discover the other day that I am 44. (Seriously, somewhere along the line I lost track this year -- probably from focusing so much on my family and forgetting about myself.) But I realized that is probably why my weight has gotten so out of control.

I used to be really active on this website a few years ago and had gotten myself down to the best shape of my life. But then life itself kind of got in the way and slowly but surely, the weight came back. I went back to work, moved, and the kids got super active at school. I am now at my highest weight ever and find that it is affecting my ability to enjoy life because I just don't feel good about myself.

Soooo... time to take control back. I could use a partner to help with motivation. Looking to lose about 20 pounds. No short cuts planned: menu planning, food tracking, regular exercise, and a lot of persistence. Care to join me?

Hi, I wish you luck. My liver counts are high and we still can't figure out why? I'm trying to lose 20-25 lbs and I have degenerative disc disease in my lower back but its getting better. I have started running for 1 min/walking for 5 min. So far so good.

Love yourself.

Hi today is my first day to Spark. I hope I am writing in the correct Forum and Topic?? I'm 47 and have gained 20 pounds over the last 4 years. My goal weight would be 130 lbs. I have very low self-esteem because of this extra weight and I'm tired of feeling insecure and tired. I have been walking and recently started walking and running 2 miles. I'm taking baby steps because I have lower back issues. I always seem to start off very well then something like back pain kicks me down. I also need to eat better. I eat all the good things but I have been adding bad things also. I would like to be a size 6 by the end of November. My long term goals are to workout 2 hrs a day cardo and weights and eat healthy all week.

Love yourself.

Hi! I am new to SparkPeople. I am 48 years old and have been overweight most of my life. Last year, I was on a great path to fitness - working out regularly and having the weight melting away when I found out my husband of 28 years had cheated on me. We decided to stay together and work on our marriage, but it put me on a path of self destruction. My self esteem is at an all time low, but I am determined to get back of making better choices for myself. My goal is to lose 23 pounds in 12 weeks.
I am determined to find the inner strength to take on this challenge. I look forward to doing it together with you.

Welcome new team members! I am relatively new to the group and I can tell you that folks have been quite nice.

KBUDDEN - Your history sounds much like mine. We are the same age and I too lost 25lbs on WW only to lose my focus and find them again. You are in a supportive arena. The tracking device is very helpful for me. I wish you well.

JOYMAD - Your 70lb loss is fantastic! WTG, lady. I hope that you find the tools that you need to continue your healthy streak. Welcome.

GABBYBONITA - I love the 40s, though they are another decade of change. You are wise to recognize the importance of establishing and maintaining healthy habits. Best wishes.

Hello,

Close to 40. Getting ready, I have heard things and nightmares about gaining weight and all of that. I have always been up and down the scale. I joined Sparkpeople years ago, back and forth and trying to keep it off. I would like to loose those 15lbs that keep coming up and down, but keep them down for good as I get ready for my 40's. Overall; I want to stay healthy!

Divine love guides me in all my decisions. I am wise and confident.

Hi! I'm 43 years. A few years ago, I lost 25 lbs using weight watchers. Unfortunately, I found those pounds again. Now older and wiser, I'm hoping to use sparkpeople to lose those 25 lbs again and this time keep them off. I've been a yo-yo exerciser. I'm great at working out when I'm in diet mode. I have worked out 4 days in a row since starting Sparkpeople. I'm trying everyday to say this is a life style change and that many years from now I will still maintain a healthy weight and continue to exercise.

Hi, all -

Not sure how much weight I want to lose, but probably around 15-20 more pounds. Have lost 70 so far. Recently re-discovered SparkPeople while searching for inspiration and ideas for breaking through a stubborn plateau and getting to the finish line (and beyond).

Hey GOSHELLLY, welcome to the group. The best advice that I would give is to make small, sustainable steps. It's sometimes hard to do that because we often want to see results quickly, but if we want to be healthy for life the choices that we make need to be sustained for the long haul. So start by tracking what you eat in the nutrition section, perhaps. I call that my "come to Jesus," because I make sure that I own up to everything I eat. When you see what's going in you'll be able to identify culprits that are hindering a healthy weight loss. When you have then process down then move onto the next. Best wishes and I look forward to seeing you on the boards!

I'm new to this team, but have been on SparkPeople for many years. I was at my goal weight once and let life get in my way and now I weigh more than ever. But, I can't live in the past. My circumstances are different now and I need to move forward. I look forward to getting to know some new friends.

I'm new to Spark people. I'm 40 and have gotten off track over the last year or so. I have 23 pounds to lose. In 2011 I lost almost 30 pounds and have since gained it all back. I hit some bumps in the road in my life and allowed myself to start some old bad habits. I know I can do this. I've done it before. This time, I want do make it last! I look forward to taking this journey with all of you. emoticon

Hello everyone,
I have been a SP member since 2011, but have been pretty focused since August 2012. I have lost 48 pounds and would like to lose another 15 or so. I am 49 years old in July and am finding it almost impossible to drop the last few pounds. I am logging and weighing my food and I work out (aerobics and circuit training) for approx 30-40 mins about 4 days a week. I also have a Fitbit and I try to get in at least 10000 steps a day. I try to eat at the low end of my calorie allowance everyday, but to shake things up I eat at the mid to higher end of my cals two days a week (Calorie Cycling).
I eat clean and don't eat too many processed foods. But I am lucky to lose a pound a month! The only thing I can think it might be, are the couple glasses of wine I have each weekend, however I count them in my daily calorie allowance.
Whatever the case, I thought maybe sharing with others in my age group who are struggling like I am might help my morale.I just try to see and focus on my accomplishments and keep plugging away at losing my remaining weight!

Hello. I have been on Spark for a few months now. I have lost 18 pounds so far and I have 13 to go to reach my goal of 135. I am starting to loose my motivation and need someone to give me a kick in the pants or something? I have completed 2 challenges the first was with my Joining Class and the second was a Spring 5% Challenge (I lost weight just not 5%).

Hello, I have been on Spark for two months, but I just recently joined the message forum. I have been doing the DDPyoga and stationary bike for two months and I have notice progress. I needed something to keep me accountable and this is the place for me. Before I eat something, I think twice about the calories. I have already lost 6 lbs and my goal is to reach 125. I hope to reach my goal by October. I figure slow and steady is the best way. Hope to hear from you guys!

Hi Kelley and everyone else. My name is Stephen and I'm hoping that by adding power yoga to my routine on my non-run days will help with what's here around the middle. I'm also starting a program to build from running a 5K to a 10K, with hopes of actually signing up for one this fall after I complete the program.

Hi.. my name is Kelley. I have used sparkpeople a few years ago, and it was great and very motivating, however it's been a long time and I'm in need of a serious kick in the butt! I'll be 40 this year and need to lose between 15-20 lbs. I'm pretty new to message boards and trying to figure those out. I look forward to this journey and progress!

Hi, everyone! I'm Terri - 45 and have been holding 15 lbs around my middle for the last three years. I am so sick of it! I seem to lose 5 lbs, plateau, gain it back... start all over again. Ugh!

I'm a school psychologist during the day - crazy busy mom to two energetic boys - wife to my hubby - just all around busy person! I keep saying that I'm going to take up juggling this summer. LOL!

I'm looking forward to getting to know you all better.

Hi everyone,
I'm a previous user of Sparkpeople, and after the last year or so of my some minor health issues and bad eating I felt I needed to come back. Sparkpeople helped me in the past, so I'm back.

I'm 48, and finding those extra pounds sneak back on so very easily now....
Really enjoying my first 2 weeks, and I've already lost just on 1kg (2.5 or so lbs).

Looking forward to group posts and all the great tips and tricks people have to keep themselves motivated and on track!

Good morning! Hooray for May. I am Saffron, and I am 44 years old, and don't know that happened. I live in Northern California and am married to my first love. We have two teenage boys who are crazy cool kids. I am ready to really make some life changes. Looking for some encouragement and inspiration. I work at a winery pouring wine in the tasting room, and doing special events, like food and wine pairing, and dinners. It's good work and a whole lot of fun, but hard to keep on track!

I am 42, almost 43 and I really struggle to drop weight. I was at 146 and now I'm down to 141, but it really is a struggle to lose any amount of pounds. I usually just gain them back without eating a lot. I just started to track my food along with exercising to the Jillian Michaels dvd's. I hope that helps some. I really enjoy walking outside. I want to drop about 15 or more pounds. I would really like to have someone who likes to track their food and post on their exercise to help keep me motivated. I need Help!! ( I have always been around 115, and happy. Now not so much)

Welcome to the team, TAMMICOON and CHANGEFORNEWME!

CHANGE - you'll have to experiment with your "kryptonite"; different things work for different people. Some can just have the occasional bite or taste and are fine with that; others find if they have a bite then they just keep going.

Hi! I'm on my first day and finding my way around. I have 16 pounds to lose after losing 116 (4 pounds from goal) and maintaining within a couple pounds of that for more than a year and then regaining 12 over the last few months.

I'm here to find motivation that has sort of fallen away. When I started losing weight, I wasn't living life beyond work or the TV or watching others do things I wished I could do. Now that I've lost much of my weight, weight really isn't keeping me from doing things I want to do.

I'm looking forward to getting to know you and sharing support as we all work towards our goals.

Hi Everyone,

I'm Tami and have been a member here now for 5 days. It takes a while to navigate this web site, there is so much information here. I really need the accountability of this kind of program, and it's nice to be part of this team.

After 5 days following the program I posted a weight loss today. Yea!, But the best thing is I have not had any chocolate in 5 days. Chocolate is my kryptonite. I'm thinking about having a small bite tomorrow so it does not become an obsession. Is that wise or shall I continue a chocolate fast? What have you all found best about your kryptonite?
Actually looking forward to this journey

Welcome to the team, Clarasmomma and Caper!

Caper, your intro had me giggling a bit, because yes, the 40 year old body is quite...interesting, isn't it? We have to work harder on it. You have a bit more of a challenge trying to keep a schedule like yours, but I know you can do it.

Hi everyone!

I'm new and trying to figure my way around - I posted a message on the boards to say "hi" and introduce myself and someone suggested that joining a team is a great way to meet people and share accomplishments...so here I am.

About me: I'm 43 and struggling. I work a crazy routine: 2 weeks of 12 hour days and 2 weeks off. So I'm dead tired for the 2 weeks at work, but this is when I eat my healthiest and work out the most and the 2 weeks I'm off I'm lazy (because I have myself convinced that I need all the down time and it just snowballs into slothdom. So any progress I make at work - I set it all back when I'm home - which is when I have all kinds of time to work on achieving my goals. Then the thought of it all depresses me and I eat a pizza and drink 3 or 4 glasses of wine...oh yeah...I'm brilliant (didn't I mention that, lol).

I want to tone up - when I was a kid, I was amazed how my grandmother's arms would giggle for ages after she stopped waving, and couldn't imagine how that could happen, but I knew it wouldn't happen to me...well...I'm on my way, and it's grossing me out.

And what's with this belly? I was lucky most of my life, so far. If I noticed a bit of a belly coming on, I'd drink more water for a couple of days and lay off carbs and it would be back to being flat as a pancake. Now: not so much. It will not get any smaller...turning 40 was like flipping a switch and everything just slowed down and expanded.

I'm hoping chatting with you lovely folks will help me stay focused and motivated. I have several bikinis home and I want to look good in at least one of them by July.

I started a 12 week work out program, that seems pretty reasonable - I know I can stick to it at work, it's just getting that damn couch removed from my backside when I'm off that will be a problem.

Looking forward to getting to know you and see how everyone progresses and improves to be their better selves.

Take care for now (sorry for the rambling, long message.)

Hi, my name is Marci and I am brand new to SPARK. I "tried" it for about a day in October, but didn't want to get serious about it. I am at 162 lbs and my goal is 155 lbs. I have 3 kids who are 24, 22 and 14. I am happily married, for almost 29 years. That's me!

SANDIELSEDA - Hi, and welcome to the team. The online support really helps, especially on the tough days. Just knowing others are dealing with the same frustrations can be helpful in keeping up the hard work.

Hi Everyone this is my first post and my first time trying something like this but I have decided today I need to start and hoping I will follow through with this program and keep my motivation going. I am 41 and a mom of 5 beautiful kids ages 19,17,15,9, and my 1 year old. I am 5'8" and weight 177 lbs so my goal is to get to 152-153 and be healthy. I want to feel strong and healthy again and I am going to give it my all. Today was my first day back to tracking and exercising and I can't wait to get the hang of everything and get this weight off or good!! emoticon

Hi, just joined the team. I've been making incremental changes for about 9 months now and I'm down 20 pounds -- looking for the next 20 now with more focus.

I've been steadily adding more exercise to my life. I'm walking 10 miles a week (7 miles on the weekend, then 3 miles one night), but looking to increment that by an additional 3 miles once a week plus some strength training. However, I've learned that when I try to commit myself to too many changes (or too drastic a change), I will give up on it. Slow changes, minor adjustments and improvements, work best for me -- because then I stick with them.

Where I can help: As a former chef, I'm full of ideas on how to prepare meals that naturally blend into 'planned overs' for the next day. I have meal planning templates, websites, ideas, etc. and I'm great for what you can make ahead and freeze so you have something delicious and homemade for dinner. (Don't get turned off by the 'chef' thing - most of what I do for me is much easier than what I would ever have done at the restaurant.)

Hello All,
I am a 40 year old mother of 4 little ones who range in ages from 2-9. I have successfully lost weight in the past but, after my 3rd child I kept some weight on. Then I got pregnant with my 4th. Since her birth 2 years ago I lost about 23 lbs and was within 6 lbs of my goal. I lost a ton of weight when my husband was deployed. Then he came back (that was 6 months ago) and I have put about 12 lbs back on. I want to FINALLY reach my goal. I know how to lose weight but, I am hoping by using the social aspects of SPARK I can stay motivated.

Each day provides with with a new opportunity to be successful.

Welcome to the team! To keep from getting overwhelmed by it all, start small. Just use the nutrition tracker for a week, then add the fitness tracker. Slowly explore other Spark things. It gets easier and less confusing if you try taking small steps.

Hello 40-something's! I re-joined Spark People last night after a 6-year hiatus. In 2008, Spark People helped me to lose 20 lbs. It was such a fun and rewarding experience. I wish I had stuck with the commitment and motivation, but I didn't, so now I'm back.
emoticon .
I'm excited to be part of a team with similar weight-loss goals. The support and accountability is great motivation for me. I look forward to getting fit with you.

Hi! I am a wife and mom from VA. I sit at work all day and go home to cook, clean up, then to bed not too longg after. I am 4'10 and weigh 126 lbs which is too much for my height. I went to a dietician and he wants me to average 300 calories a meal and 100 for snacks. Suggested to get to my weight loss goal in a month and a half of 1 -2 lbs a week; I have cut out snacks. The only free time I have to fit in my recommended 30-40 min a day cardio is during my hour lunch. I speed walk, run in an empty dept and run up and down stairs. I want to get to at least 105 lbs in the future. Can this be done with this amt of exercise? Warmer weather will help being able to walk when I get home and need to find time to walk or ride bikes too....

Hi again Jen!

If you want, you can add your name to your signature so it's always there and you don't have to introduce yourself all the time on here. If I'm not mistaken, you do it in settings/profile. It will come up with your ticker after each post.

Daily Chat: Just go to the Team main forum page by clicking "40 Somethings with 10-24 pounds to lose" and join the team if you are not already on it. Once you join the team you will see all the topics you can get involved in. If you are already on the team just join in on the Daily Chat by clicking on that topic.

Also, I'm not sure you want it this way, but currently, you don't allow the public access to your SparkPage. So I can't get to your page and add you as a friend. Again, that access will be in your profile settings I think, or if you click to "edit" your page you'll see a list of settings in the top right section of the screen which allow or block access.

It took me weeks to get used to the site. But my favorite part is encouragement from my Spark friends and I like to encourage others too. I hope you get all the kinks worked out!

Tina~

Thanks for the welcome Tina. I should mention that my name is Jen. Sorry for the confusion! I did a cleanse the first week of Feb. So, that helped with my weight loss. Now, I'm working hard on tracking and not snacking at night (my biggest pitfall). Please let me know how to join the daily chat. I'd love to get to know everyone here. Also, any tips to motivate me on how to get moving. I live in freezing cold MA. So, I'm in hibernation mode.

Hi, I'm new here. I'm 44 and noticed over the years that my weight slowly crept up on me. I'm hoping to stay inspired and motivated through Spark People. I've been tracking for about a month and I have lost 12 lbs. I don't know how the message forum works, but if someone could tell me how to put a weight goal timeline like everyone has in their siggy, that would be awesome. Happy to be here!

Hi MAJUMA and GEORGIESGIRL!

I love that this place is becoming so lively! I hope everyone sticks around for the long haul!

I'm motivated mostly by coming onto Spark and being part of an active community with similar goals. When I see my Spark friends took 10,000 steps in a day or did their 5K training workout or completed 30 minutes of strength training, it makes me want to keep up with them. I have a FitBit tracker too which is quite a motivating little device, I have to say. I've been known to go up and down the stairs 20 times at 10 pm if I am 300 steps away from my daily goal or I'm just short the amount of calories I had wanted to burn on that day.

Welcome to all the new 40 Somethings! It's great to have you!

Tina~

I just joined sparkpeople because I've gained 5 lbs since the holidays! I did weight watchers 3 yrs ago and lost 30 lbs. I've been slowly gaining it back. So far, I've gained a total of 13 back. My goal is to loose 18 lbs by July. I'm married with 3 kids. I like to work out. My biggest problem is my diet. I have a major sweet tooth. I tend to "snack" while making my kids lunches and while making dinner. I'm looking for motivation and encouragement to break these and other bad habits.

Hi, all. I'm Sara, I'm 40, and I have 18 pounds to lose. I live in Littleton, CO and I teach private music lessons (piano and voice). I also just started substitute teaching, so I've got a lot of transition happening right now! With spring approaching, I am feeling motivated to get outside and MOVE. :) [I am hoping to develop a love of running, running and I have never been very good friends. I really want to like it --- I probably just have to make myself do it, right? Yeah, that's what I thought.... ;)] I am married and have an 8-year-old daughter; I love reading, crocheting and singing. I'm hoping that I can develop healthier habits and that I can be of some help to others who might need some support. We can do this, you guys!

Thoughts become things.

Hi everyone!

My name is Nicole and I'm so glad I found this team! It looks wonderfully supportive and active. I was a member of another 40-something team and there was almost no support on that. I just recently turned 40 and I still have about 17 pounds to lose. I've been on Spark for a little over 2 years now and I've lost 33 pounds to date.

I'm looking forward to getting to know all of you and making some inspiring new Sparkfriends! (as I hope I can inspire others as well!)

It is attitude, not circumstance, that makes success possible in even the most unlikely conditions.

That's the range I got from SparkPeople, and also from a nutritionist I saw, so I hope it's right! Interesting that you found eating at the higher end occasionally was good - I will keep that in mind. Thanks!

JASMINETA - Welcome to the team! 1200 calories may not be the correct range for you; I know it depends on your starting weight. I found that sometimes it helps if I eat at the lower end of my calorie range some days and then higher (1500 or more) on a day or two every week.

Doing my best...one day at a time.

Hi,

I'm a 43 year old professional, married to a professional, and a mother of four kids, aged 11-3. Since my youngest turned 3, I figure it's time I stop blaming my last 15 pounds on the baby weight I haven't taken off yet. Finding time is a struggle for me, but I want to get back to a weight I''m happier with. On a good week I get 3 workouts at the gym and 2 yoga classes, but it seems there's always another commitment to interfere with at least 1-2 of those times.

I tried tracking last year but despite being really careful, eating 1200 calories a day, I was only losing 0.3 pounds a week and found it really discouraging. I'm trying again though, having realized that if I'd stuck with that last year, I'd be down my fifteen pounds by now. So I'm mentally preparing for a long journey, and hoping that by joining boards this time, it will help me keep my motivation up.

Welcome to the team, Sal! It sounds like you have a good plan going. The nutrition tracker can help you with those steps. Start using it faithfully to see exactly what you're eating - it's an eye-opener, and I often don't eat something because I don't want to see it on my tracker!

Doing my best...one day at a time.

Hi, my name is Angie and I am new to Sparks People and to the team. I am a new mom who has lost over 40 lbs since having my baby, but seem to be struggling to lose the rest. My real good friend, Jinx, told me how inspiring and motivating this group is so I thought I would join. I am looking forward to meeting everyone and hearing about their weight loss journey.

Hugs,

~Angie~

Welcome Elise!

It sounds like you could be the one offering us tips! Great job on your 3 pounds.

I guess if I had some pertinent advice to give, it would be that balance is the key to your health. Trying to do too much at once will throw you off, sabotage your efforts and ultimately discourage you from reaching your goals. It is the reason people yo-yo when they diet.

If you learn to find a healthy balance in your life, you will reach your goals in a reasonable amount of time and then maintain that lifestyle for the rest of your life. I know you've heard this before. We all have. But I find it to be the single most important lesson I have learned on my 3 year journey to better health. I intend for it to be a 30 or 40 year journey when all is said and done.

Best of luck!
Jinx~

Welcome to the team, TexasMom43! I would suggest starting slow, use the nutrition tracker faithfully and then build up from there.

Hi there. Not sure how this message board works. I just joined Sparkpeople today hoping it will help me get organized and drop the 15 pounds I picked up in the last 2 years. I am going to explore the trackers and articles. Any advice for a new member? emoticon

Welcome to all the new members - I myself am new "sort of". I was part of the community about a year ago. I have gained a few pounds since my departure, although I have never stopped working out. I have always worked out 5-6 days a week, but I am beginning to steadily put on weight. I need a jump start and change what I do - my body has become very efficient at doing my exercise - TOO efficient. My age may have something to do with it too, as my metabolism is probably slowing to a crawl, so I am looking for new and different ideas.

Hi everyone. I was on Spark People in 2006. Lost quite a bit of weight since then but now picked up 20 again and it seem to be very slow going or none at all. I'm hoping that if I get back to tracking and "seeing" what I do as well as going back to the gym, it might help. Being over 40 does not help either!!

Hello Y'all

I am new today. I am tired of being out of shape and being a couch potato. I had a bad fall in 2011 that caused me to have a pretty bad neck injury resulting in neck surgery and nerve damage on the left side of my body. I have using that as an excuse to not exercise and I can feel my body getting flabbier and flabbier because of it. Sooo, I found sparkpeople and I am on my way. This is my first day! emoticon
