Hello from Denver,

just joined SP about a week ago. I learned about this site from a dietician I visited for some education. I retired from the military last year and since then I have weighed more each day than the previous one. Along with the weight gain came all the bad side effects: increased cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar. I'd like to bring my weight down about 20 lbs and get into an effective fitness regime to maintain a healthy lifestyle. I am really thankfull the dietician introduced me to SparkPeople. I think this is what I needed - a tool to help me be accountable for my health.

look forward to learning something new for all and hope that I can contibute something to the team.

Berto

First of all congrats to Mariann, Wolfietoo and any others who are getting serious about their weight loss early. I was within 5 lbs of my ideal weight most of my adult life. 4 years ago had health issues & the Dr put me on steriods - BAM! 7 lbs in a week. After that it was hormones - BAM! another 7 lbs. I thought my body would even itself out after I got off the drugs and become regulated. Nope. I gained another 5.
I wish I had gotten serious about loosing when I started to not like the skin I was in and quit wearing half shirts. Now I'm 10 lbs past that. I might be too old to ever get back in half shirts or bikinis but at least I can look good IN clothes again.

It's 70 here in Texas today. So I'm sorry about your luck. You'll be laughing in August when it's been over 100 for a solid month here and walking to the mailbox seems like torture.

Hi there TTLeeLee, good to meet you! I'm in PA and it is quite yucky out today. I have a friend that MAKES me go to the gym with her, we went and poked around at the garden store afterwards. Not a garden vegetable to be seen, just the seeds. I would probably just stay home on the days I don't work if not for her. Have you got a buddy there to motivate you?

Lets see if we can stick to the program ALL DAY! (And then do it again tomorrow!)

Hello Everyone,

Stumbled up this team and figured I should check it out. I'm in the Cleveland, Ohio area which means winter lasts from Thanksgiving through Easter (and sometimes longer). It is the toughest time for me to feel good, get exercise, and so much more.

So, here I am - Hi!

That's great, Kat! What color did you get?? I actually have a two piece with a sarong, a tankini I guess. I'll be happy if I can take the sarong off and feel confident to walk on the beach without it. Everyone will be looking at my enormous floppy hat anyway, HAHA!

Lets see if we can stick to the program ALL DAY! (And then do it again tomorrow!)

Hello everyone, I've been taking a look around this site. What a great way to become accountable for a healthy lifestyle. And that's what I have to be. I love to work out, but eating right is tough. And just working out without worrying about what I eat just doesn't work anymore after about the age of 35.

I look forward to getting to know all of you!

Hi Angie and Mason, good to meet you both. I just got back from the gym so I'm getting a running start on my first day. I know what you mean about being glued to the computer, takes a while to get the most out of this great site!

Hi, I'm new to Spark. I'm 42, and I have maintained my weight for most of my life. That is...until now. Now, I've gained 10+ pounds, and no matter what I do, it won't go away.

I've been riding my bike to work (7 miles) every day for 6 months now. Though I feel great about that, those 10 pounds are still there!

Anyways, I stumbled upon this website, and it seems like a great place, so here I am! Maybe, I'll find some tips on here that will help me shed those 10 pounds!

I'm maintaining my loss! Maintenance range: 117-122.

Good luck to all who have weigh in's this weekend. But remember, weight is only one measurement of success. Think about the way you feel, how your improving your health, maybe your clothes are beginning to fit a little better and your over all perseverance to stick with it all need to be celebrated. A healthy life style is a journey not a destination!

I think we all need to give ourselves a break. WE deserve this. We deserve to be thinner. And studies have shown people lose more weight when they have support. And that is what this is all about.

I'm a newbie too. Been with the program about 3 weeks. Started it last year but lost my momentum, now I'm 5 lbs heavier. I've chimed in on a couple of discussions but it's a little intimidating. Part of it is not being blog savy and part of it is just feelin like a big ole dork.
I've never been heavy but my after 40 metabolism is catching up to me. I'm glad to find a group of people with the same level of goals, who don't dismiss my desire to loose weight and feel comfortabel in my body just because I'm not overweight by their standards.

Hi! I am new to this too. I still need to figure out how to navigate etc. I am a lifetime dieter and was good at maintaining my weight until last year when I turned 44. In my teens I was thin, 20s I went up to 203 and in my thirties I was able to maintain 150, which is a good weight for me.

Then the 40s hit. I need to lose 11 pounds. I think this will be fun and will really help get me back on track. I can see that I will have to reduce the amount I eat now that I am older.

emoticon to SP,

I'm fairly new to the site myself, but if you go to the community tab you will find the nutrition tracker, where you can enter the food you eat, and the fitness tracker where you can log in your exercise. They are very helpful tools, I know there is an instruction video on how to use the entire site. I will try and locate that again and let you know how I found it.

Just hang in there, someone with a lot more knowledge than I have will answer you soon!

Hi all,

I joined Spark just after Christmas and did the boot camp challenge in January. I gained instead of losing! But as I increased my exercise I also increased my food intake...big time! So the weight gain was of my own doing. Anyway, it's a new month and I have made the mental commitment to lose the weight. I want to lose 15lbs, and then keep it off.
I look forward to getting to know other 40 somethings.

Hi, I am 40 and need to lose 15-20 pounds. I would like to run a 5k this year in May. I am new to SP so hopefully this will help me! I think the eating portion of losing weight seems to be the hardest for me, especially on weekends. I am also a beginner jogger/runner so that is difficult. I can maybe run 1 mile so far.

Hello all. I guess that should be hello again. I was pretty active on SparkPeople about a year ago when I was a 40 something with 10-24 pounds to lose. Then life got hectic and I put taking care of myself at the bottom of my priorities so I came back to Spark just around christmas as a 40 something with 40 to lose emoticon . I'm almost back to having just 24 pounds to lose and I hope I can stick with it this time.

I'm not overweight, I'm undertall.

DSTROEING, Wow!I commend you for your selfless gift of life!!! I know you will be able to achieve all you set your heart and mind to. I can't even imagine running a marathon. I did surprise myself 3 years ago, though, when a couple friends (marathon runners) challenged me to take up running after I went on an on with excuses. "I just can't run." "I try, and I just get too tired and need to stop." " I can't even run 1/2 mile without stopping- maybe even 1/4 mile." blah, blah blah. Well they explained the whole idea of "breaking through the wall, and getting your second wind, etc." Well I took the bait and decided that for my 40th birthday, I would be able to run a 5 K. I know that's just a warm-up for a "real runner", but for me it was a huge goal. Well I did it!!!! Unfortunately, I fell off the wagon after a year and am right back to where I was. I really need to get back on and start again.....anyway, best of luck to you! emoticon

Hi all,
I found SP through a student's paper...I teach college psychology courses. There's a big gap sometimes between what we know and what we do. After a recent clothes shopping experience (full-length mirrors) I'm ready to DO now. My first goal is to lose 14 pounds by the end of March. I'll figure out where to go after that.

Hi team! I'm new to this team, but not to sparkpeople, although I have been away for awhile. I recently came back and when I reset my goals, they suggested this team to me (didn't even know you were here). It's nice to know that there are others who understand that it's harder to drop the weight now than it was 20 years ago!! I look forward to getting to know y'all and offer my support whenever I can.

Greetings from Steeler town! I've been using SparkPeople for about a week, and just discovered the teams.

My plan is to focus on healthy eating (the Nutrition Tracker is really helping me stay accountable for everything I put in my mouth!). I've been doing regular cardio (walk up and down the hills in my town) for several months. I'm an early morning exerciser, and since lately it's been too cold to be out at 5 AM, I have joined a great spinning club. They have a morning spin that meets my schedule perfectly, so I am now spinning 3-4 times/week. Now trying to add the weight lifting back in to kick things up a notch.

Donna, we have a couple of adult women's competetive hockey teams (ie: teams that are in leagues) in Pittsburgh, and three years ago I discovered my dream; an adult women's developmental program. We practice on Sunday nights, which usually works well for me except for the occasional business travel. If only I could skate as well as my sons! We have an ice rink in our front yard, and the weather has finally gotten cold enough for it to freeze and stay frozen.(probably not a problem where you live). It's great to be able to step outside and skate even if I only have 30 spare minutes!

I have a question about the SparkPeople reports. Is there any way to get a report that shows your Net Calories for the day? I see Nutrition reports that just show my calories in, and Fitness reports that show my calories burned. But I am trying to track the need to have a weekly calorie deficit of 500 in order to lose one pound per week. Is there some way to see that in SparkPeople?

Thanks everyone!
Meridee

A big HELLO from Kansas!!! My name is Glenda and I'm here to lose the pounds that suddenly crept up on me after I tunred the big 40. What a shock it was, too!! I will be on here from time to time since I have started back to school to get my associates degree in health information management. So I kind of have to really balance a tight schedule. But I know I will be a lot happier geting rid of these 30 to 35 pounds. So I guess I can used all the support and tips you all can give me (because the muffin top has to go). Hope to hear from you all soon. Have a great weekend. My journey and challange has just begun and I'm ready

Hello Sparkpeeps! My name is Dee and I've joined Sparkpeople to get some added support and structure on my journey to run my first marathon in over 20 years which I plan to do this October. I quit smoking 1/2/2008, and was lucky enough to only gain 10 pounds which I lost pretty quick. This past October I donated a kidney to a friend of mine, and in my recovery I lost most of my muscle mass. So, my mission is to lose 15 pounds and train for the marathon which will help me regain my muscle. I'm looking forward to meeting all of you!

Hello Everyone -

I've been slow getting involved with this site, but do enjoy the articles and ideas. I'm 49 and really looking forward to 50 - it seems so empowering. I have lost quite a bit of weight with WW and was disappointed to gain some back when I stopped going to meetings. I hope to find some support here with all of you and to feel a part of. I am so looking forward to getting to know you and navigating my way through this site.

Hello! I joined about a month ago and have been slowly learning how to get around in SparkPeople. I am down 11 pounds from my high point last summer and hope to lose about 20 more by this summer. When I get to that point I'll see if I want to go farther. I am working on developing good habits, so I am going slowly. I don't do well when I try to change everything at once. I've read several people's comments that this is a great group and am looking forward to reading and posting more in the future!

Even today, I did my Beachbody workouts (Slim & Limber and Turbo Jam), but I'm going to do the P90X Yoga DVD also (total minutes of workout: 100 minutes!!

Stay acoountable everyone! It works.

I am new to SP and trying to figure out the website. How do we get the little "time line" that shows how much weight you are losing? Those are cute, but of course I have only been on here one day, so I don't need it just yet.

Hi gang:) I'm Annie and I live in the L.A. area. I joined Sparks 3 weeks ago, but haven't made any diet or exercise changes, until today. Planning to track what I eat, and start yoga. Tendon injuries (Rrrr)are keeping me from my old favorites, tennis, walking and biking. I'm hoping to lose 20 pounds. Thought if I communicated with the group, it might help my motivation. Thanks everyone! Good luck to you all:) Annie

Hi Carolanne,

That sucks! I hear ya! I'm at 27% BF. I cannot budget off of 160! I think I've been 160 since 7th grade! Can you do any low impact exercising? Squats, lunges, leg lifts? I'm a Beachbody Coach and use their Slim in 6 home DVDS. I've lost 25 lbs, but now looking to lose the last 20. I've since switched to chaLEAN Extreme, which is heavy weights - with the notion that muscle burns fat. Let me know if you are interested, I can send you some info.

Good luck! Do do you still do WW?

Hi All - I am Carolanne from Florida. 4 years ago I lost 80lbs w/WW but I've recently gained a few pounds back and want to lose a total of about 15 - 20 lbs. According my my scale - I am 30% body fat (which pisses me off) and my goal is really to lose FAT not weight. I am dealing with a tendon injury which prevents me from resistance training and kickboxing (which are 2 of my favorite things)

Hello Pam and everyone! I haven't been around in a while, but I'm back! I had a bad week! Not tracking food can be deadly! I love the analogy of keeping a checking book so you know your balance - the same holds true for food. I've been following the WW points system and when I write it down, I have better results!!

I'm continuing with my Beachbody at home exercise routines and actually doing "doubles". I do the chaLEAN Extreme weight program 5 days and the Slim in 6 slim training 6 days (doubling up). I'm determined to blow off this 20 lbs that I've been hanging onto for over 25 years!!

Way to keep going everyone! That's why I became a Beachbody Coach so I HAVE to stay committed!!

Hi, I'm 43 and have 20-25 pounds of fat to lose and transform into muscle! I just started the Abs Diet which emphasizes healthy food, not counting calories, and muscle tone.
