Hello my name is val. I have been struggling with my weight for some time. My doctor up my medicine to atorvastatin because my levels are too high. I want them to come down because I know I'm in a danger zone. Thanks to spark people I am more motivated to do what I need to do to reverse this outcome

My name is Courti. I think I was on here ages ago.

My cholesterol and Trig hasn't been all that high but has been over the borderline. The doctor has me on Atorvastatin. I really need to up my exercise and eating more healthy.
I need to research just what is good when looking at labels, like low fat and low sugar. Some of the others I'm not sure of, but know I need more fiber in my diet. I'm a very picky eater which doesn't help.

I recently got into cooking and baking. DH does most of the cooking. I'll have to check to see if there is a thread for healthy eating with cholesterol.

Got a wake up call on my recent yearly physical-okay for HDL but cholesterol and LDL too high and doc wanted me to start meds! As a nurse I know that medications have a place but at 50 I am not ready to start taking anything other than my multivite. Negotiated with her for a chance to reduce my numbers by improving my diet and increasing my activity levels-going to have a recheck in 3 months and fingers crossed I will have better numbers. I am hoping that by using Spark it will help me track my diet and fitness and keep me honest. One thing I already love is finding lightened version of my favorite Southern dishes (not usually known to be healthy by any stretch of the imagination).

Hi. My name is Steve. I have been away from Sparkpeople for a couple of years. My cholesterol and triglycerides have been too high for some time. In February I started a medically supervised diet to lose the weight. It is amazing. I have lost 60 pounds now from my highest weight. I am finally in the normal range. My triglycerides are normal and my cholesterol is almost normal. The doctor says I need to exercise to get it back in range. So losing the weight really works. Now I need to stay connected to Sparkpeople to keep the weight off. Go Team!!!

Hi. This has been a year for me. I just turned 66, got dentures for the first time, work full time, (two 12 hour days and 2 eight hour days. Possibly have fibromyalgia, although the doctor won't send me to a rheumatologist for definite diagnosis. Haven't had a good result with the diet so I was put on statins this week. I keep looking at the bottle but am terrified to start using them. I am hoping this site will help me. I do have a problem with good food choices evidently, so any help would be appreciated. I quit frying foods a few years ago. Eat mostly chicken, occasionally have a Coney island, have scrambled eggs and due to scheduling eat processed foods ( boxed potatoes, pasta roni, etc. ) Started using the diet tracker and yesterday almost had a heart attack when it showed I went over 1000 calories more than my 1500 allowance. Yeah, I need help. PLEASE. Thank you in advance.

I'm on the same meds. I guess I didn't look at the side affects. Maybe that's why I seem to be having a hard time thinking of things - it's been driving me crazy when it happens. I would like to get off the meds.

Hi I am also on Atrovastion for the control of my Chloe.
I didnt realize the side affects. I have had them all. They then told me i have dementia and possible M.S.
Just ruled out M.S. somehow. But if the meds are making forget and all the other stuff maybe i should do something other then meds.
Thats why im trying this group.
I just moved here so im looking for a doctor to take my medical coverage.
Im thinking they just want all my money. Ive been thru so many tests its crazy.
I know God is my healer so im waiting on my manisftion.

Hi Deanna. I just joined Spark People on 1/5/15 and am very pleased with it. This is my third team I joined. I am also a type two Diabetic and it is so hard to eat the right way. I am on 2 statins: Simvastatin & Fenofibrate. I'm hoping that along with this program I can get rid of 1 or both of these drugs. So far I have lost 7 lbs. Anyway good luck to you. My Name is Judy.

I have decided against using Lipitor. I am going to attempt lowering my total chol, and raising my good, without the use of statins. Cutting down on sugar which causes inflammation is a goal, also more vegetables and less carbs, especially bread, potatoes and pasta....

I'm 67 and just diagnosed with CHF and although my cholesterol has been high for a few years I was unable to take the statins due to my reactions to them. Thank goodness when I was using this site last someone mentioned Niacin and it has been helping a lot along with Zetia. But with my new diagnosis I am trying to really pay attention to my fats and salt intake. I would like one of those neat weight icons but don't know where on the site to get one.

My cholesterol is higher than it should be, starting Lipitor tonight. Hospital said to take it at night. It (cholesterol) has been slowing climbing past few years..I am 67,guess I better take it seriously now..blood pressure is normal though, hope this team has some healthy recipes to post,or know where I can find some...guess it will be back to eggbeaters.

hi everyone, I have had high cholesterol for a few years now, but only since I was recently diagnosed with high blood pressure did I start taking it seriously.

I am 47 and realized that the combination of high blood pressure with cholesterol was not good and that if I did not make changes now, my future would not be looking to bright.

My goal is to lower my blood pressure to allot healthier by Dec. and to lower my cholesterol quite a bit by March.

I plan to do this by working out 6 days a week, managing my stress better through yoga and qi-gong, taking supplements that help with lowering my blood pressure, cholesterol, & inflammation, drinking 3 cups of hibiscus tea every day that helps lower blood pressure, drink one cup of green tea each morning and take supplements to up my antioxidants in my body, and of course loosing weight, 40 pounds to be exact.

All this I am hoping to have lost 40 pounds by the end of March and lowered my Cholesterol to a safer level by then.

I also am trying to get my 8 glasses of water in each day, as we are made up of 75-80% water, I think it is safe to say that getting enough water is key to help keeping the engines running better. I have a really good water filtration system that helps take out 70% of chemicals in the water, after a year of drinking this water I am sick allot less, and notice quite a difference now from the chemicals in straight tap water, I can even smell it now when the water is running without the filter I am so sensitive to it now that I have not been drinking it for so long.

anyways, that is where I am at, I have started off slow and am slowly increasing everything each week with my work outs. emoticon

I am in control of who I am,
What I want to look like,
what I put into my mouth and mind,
today and every day
I choose only the best,
That will surely,
lead me to success.
sherry

Hi!! I'm Shelly and I just rejoined Spark! I had an account a long time ago but didn't utilize it like I should've! I'm an 8th grade teacher and have about 30 pounds to lose. I have borderline high cholesterol so I want to prevent it from getting higher so I do not have more issues. I'm trying not to focus on the scale too much... I just want to feel good and healthy!! I tend to do well for awhile and then once I have a hiccup it goes downhill from there..I love how Spark is community based and I look forward to interacting with all of you, keeping each other on track, and exchanging advice :)

ok, diagnosed with diabetes in March 2014

I'm at 128/130 lbs and my dr has been fussing at me to eat more, but for my height I'm 5'2 I'm having difficulty after I have lost almost 60 lbs.

Then this last visit which was approx Aug 1--I brought my a1c from very, very high to 7.1 and she started me on cholesteral statins because I'm at 147 and I should be at 100. She didn't talk to me about what foods not to eat, wondering if I should call the nutritionist

this is crazy

I am 40 and have high cholesterol. My goals include exercising 6 days per week, eating better, losing weight, feeling better, drinking my water and more. Most of all, I want to focus on all the good choices I make every day in regard to my goals and try to do better each day...I am not trying to be perfect right off the bat but get better or do better every day!!!! I track everything but try to stay positive and focus on things I did well each day. I hope by taking this approach, I will make gains in all my goal areas over time.

Hi! I've been on high blood pressure and cholesterol meds for the past several years. I know that I will feel WAY better if I get my health under control. I, too have thinning hair. I also take Depakote for bipolar and I know that can cause hair thinning. Knowing that I have this group to go with me on this journey encourages me. Just think how awesome we will be as we keep climbing to our goal!

I am sorry that you had to go through that too. It is such an awful experience to wash your hair and end up with handfuls of it in the process. I have looked at every possibility, and the only medication I know which would cause this hair loss is the Staten. I look at the other side effects and it appeared that I was suffering from many of them. I know that God counts every hair on our head, but I wish that he would start counting a few more on mine. Actually, it looked today as though some of mine were starting to grow back again. It seemed like I had some short little hairs in there, but I am not hundred percent sure and don't want to get my hopes up yet. When a person is losing their hair, they try desperately to figure out the reason. The doctor has instructed me to take zinc, magnesium. I am also considering some type of protein powder because I know I do not get enough protein in my diet. I also take the fish oil to help control my cholesterol. You know with all of the complaints that I have had for my doctor over the last six months or so, I don't understand why she did not put them together with the Statin side effects. Kind of blows my mind. You have raise my hopes about having good thick hair again. Thank you for posting that.

STRIVER - I understand the hair loss. Lost mine after doc tried several different statins. I'm off totally now and trying to control the cholesterol with diet and exercise. Hair has returned - ways to go but it's looking so much better. Good luck!

I may have posted this in the wrong place earlier in an effort to get involved too quickly, so I'll try here.

Hi I'm Jan and have had high cholesterol for years. I was told it was hereditary and I know that both parents had it.

Statins have controlled my numbers, but: Side effects of Statin meds (like Pravistatin and many more) for lowering Cholesterol:

Dizziness
Blurred Vision
Eye problems
Headaches
Muscle, joint and tendon pain
Memory Loss (legitimate reason for being spacy)
Insomnia
Tiredness
Lupus-like Symptoms
HAIR LOSS ! -- a lot of it... GONE. (Yes, hair loss--right there on the head)

.....and I have them ALL ! Now I'm going to have to eat really healthy because doctor obviously took me off the Pravastatin. I won't be taking cholesterol medications anymore. (AND exercise EVERY SINGLE DAY).

I know that eating healthy is difficult for everyone, but I live in an apartment complex where these ladies LOVE to bake. They know I love sweets, so I receive these delicious desserts quite often. Now, how am I going to say "no"? I wonder if the Doctor will accept that (haha). Actually that doesn't matter so much because at this point I don't remember who my doctor is..

Hi, I am Pam, 60, and I live in Las Vegas. I have had high cholesterol for several years. I am on Lipitor 10 mg daily. My numbers are good with the medication. HDL is a little low but LDL number is also low and the doctor is pleased.

Thanks to my body producing too much cholesterol, I may never be off medication but I feel reducing my weight may help with that goal. If I can't be off, I want to be taking the lowest dose possible.

I joined Spark people in 2013 but only truly committed to the program in January 2014. Since then I am down about 20 pounds. I am not dieting (never will again). I practice portion control and moderation with all foods. I exercise and take my medications. Hopefully this will make my "senior" years more healthy and enjoyable.

Looking forward to being a member of the team.

"NOTHING changes if nothing changes" Remember, while looking forward to reaching your destination you need to enjoy the journey.

With God, all things are possible.

I joined Spark People several months ago, but only recently started tracking and "working" the site. I have high cholesterol due to heredity as well as diet and know I need to get it under control.

HI I'm Cathy (or Cat).
I'm 61 and have been off cholesterol meds for 2 years. My numbers put me in a range that my Dr's feel comfortable that I don't need to go back on at this time.

I am pre-disposed genetically towards obesity, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes. I began fighting it when in my 30's . . . I went through some rough years and the pounds began to increase.... I found myself at an all time high..... and that's when I found SparkPeople.

I've kept off about 12 pounds for one year, and the Drs are happy about that . . . but I want to drop some more.... but it's not about dieting as much as changing what I eat.

I've been reducing my processed carb intake and have lost 3 pounds this past week. . . . and I feel so much better.

I'm working on a plan that I fits my life/lifestyle; one I can stick with for the rest of my life.

I know I can do this . . .

It may sound harsh but I'm not looking to join a team of sympathizers, complainers, whiners or excuse makers.

Am I in the right place??

Come on' . . . let's do this!!!!! Let's make it happen!!!!

Cat

It's never too late to live happily ever after!

Carol--I hope your tests come back with good results. I just returned from the doctor's. All my blood results were good. I've got high cholesterol and diabetes 2. Both are currently under control but it is always an uphill battle. I've been on here for less than a month.

Hi Team, my name is Carol and I have had high cholesterol for over a year now. I've tried to change my diet to some degree but I can't seem to get my cholesterol down. I was on medicine but couldn't afford it and now I have changed doctors who wants me to try diet and exercise.
I'm having blood work done again on Monday and hope that it has come down but I don't know what my numbers were the last time.

Hi ; ) I'm Debbie. I hope to change my food plan and reduce my cholesterol. My triglycerides are also high and my family has a genetic problem that keeps meds from working on this. Glad to be here.

Hi I am new to Spark People and ready to lose weight and lower my cholesterol! I have been on cholesterol medicine for the last few years; it has helped me decrease my bad cholesterol levels greatly, but I would LOVE to get healthy and get off the medication entirely! Hoping to find help and support here!

Hi I'm Carol and I'm 46 almost 47 and at one time my cholesterol was at 500, the last time it was checked it was high but I wasn't told the exact numbers. I'm not new to Spark People as I was a member here once before but I am new to the team and would appreciate any help that you all can give. I don't eat alot of fried and greasy foods but I can't say that I'm a healthy eater either. They want me to try diet and exercise before they put me back on cholesterol medicine, different doctor this time.

If you are having cramps have you tried taking co enzyme Q10 with your statin it can help reduce the side effects or maby a lower dose. Also if that does not help you can try a different statin, pravachol (pravastatin) has the lowest incident of this side effect, however there are quite a few people who are not able to tolerate any statin.
