My cholesterol is higher than it should be, starting Lipitor tonight. Hospital said to take it at night. It (cholesterol) has been slowing climbing past few years..I am 67,guess I better take it seriously now..blood pressure is normal though, hope this team has some healthy recipes to post,or know where I can find some...guess it will be back to eggbeaters.

hi everyone, I have had high cholesterol for a few years now, but only since I was recently diagnosed with high blood pressure did I start taking it seriously.

I am 47 and realized that the combination of high blood pressure with cholesterol was not good and that if I did not make changes now, my future would not be looking to bright.

My goal is to lower my blood pressure to allot healthier by Dec. and to lower my cholesterol quite a bit by March.

I plan to do this by working out 6 days a week, managing my stress better through yoga and qi-gong, taking supplements that help with lowering my blood pressure, cholesterol, & inflammation, drinking 3 cups of hibiscus tea every day that helps lower blood pressure, drink one cup of green tea each morning and take supplements to up my antioxidants in my body, and of course loosing weight, 40 pounds to be exact.

All this I am hoping to have lost 40 pounds by the end of March and lowered my Cholesterol to a safer level by then.

I also am trying to get my 8 glasses of water in each day, as we are made up of 75-80% water, I think it is safe to say that getting enough water is key to help keeping the engines running better. I have a really good water filtration system that helps take out 70% of chemicals in the water, after a year of drinking this water I am sick allot less, and notice quite a difference now from the chemicals in straight tap water, I can even smell it now when the water is running without the filter I am so sensitive to it now that I have not been drinking it for so long.

anyways, that is where I am at, I have started off slow and am slowly increasing everything each week with my work outs. emoticon

I am in control of who I am,
What I want to look like,
what I put into my mouth and mind,
today and every day
I choose only the best,
That will surely,
lead me to success.
sherry

Hi!! I'm Shelly and I just rejoined Spark! I had an account a long time ago but didn't utilize it like I should've! I'm an 8th grade teacher and have about 30 pounds to lose. I have borderline high cholesterol so I want to prevent it from getting higher so I do not have more issues. I'm trying not to focus on the scale too much... I just want to feel good and healthy!! I tend to do well for awhile and then once I have a hiccup it goes downhill from there..I love how Spark is community based and I look forward to interacting with all of you, keeping each other on track, and exchanging advice :)

ok, diagnosed with diabetes in March 2014

I'm at 128/130 lbs and my dr has been fussing at me to eat more, but for my height I'm 5'2 I'm having difficulty after I have lost almost 60 lbs.

Then this last visit which was approx Aug 1--I brought my a1c from very, very high to 7.1 and she started me on cholesteral statins because I'm at 147 and I should be at 100. She didn't talk to me about what foods not to eat, wondering if I should call the nutritionist

this is crazy

I am 40 and have high cholesterol. My goals include exercising 6 days per week, eating better, losing weight, feeling better, drinking my water and more. Most of all, I want to focus on all the good choices I make every day in regard to my goals and try to do better each day...I am not trying to be perfect right off the bat but get better or do better every day!!!! I track everything but try to stay positive and focus on things I did well each day. I hope by taking this approach, I will make gains in all my goal areas over time.

Hi! I've been on high blood pressure and cholesterol meds for the past several years. I know that I will feel WAY better if I get my health under control. I, too have thinning hair. I also take Depakote for bipolar and I know that can cause hair thinning. Knowing that I have this group to go with me on this journey encourages me. Just think how awesome we will be as we keep climbing to our goal!

I am sorry that you had to go through that too. It is such an awful experience to wash your hair and end up with handfuls of it in the process. I have looked at every possibility, and the only medication I know which would cause this hair loss is the Staten. I look at the other side effects and it appeared that I was suffering from many of them. I know that God counts every hair on our head, but I wish that he would start counting a few more on mine. Actually, it looked today as though some of mine were starting to grow back again. It seemed like I had some short little hairs in there, but I am not hundred percent sure and don't want to get my hopes up yet. When a person is losing their hair, they try desperately to figure out the reason. The doctor has instructed me to take zinc, magnesium. I am also considering some type of protein powder because I know I do not get enough protein in my diet. I also take the fish oil to help control my cholesterol. You know with all of the complaints that I have had for my doctor over the last six months or so, I don't understand why she did not put them together with the Statin side effects. Kind of blows my mind. You have raise my hopes about having good thick hair again. Thank you for posting that.

STRIVER - I understand the hair loss. Lost mine after doc tried several different statins. I'm off totally now and trying to control the cholesterol with diet and exercise. Hair has returned - ways to go but it's looking so much better. Good luck!

I may have posted this in the wrong place earlier in an effort to get involved too quickly, so I'll try here.

Hi I'm Jan and have had high cholesterol for years. I was told it was hereditary and I know that both parents had it.

Statins have controlled my numbers, but: Side effects of Statin meds (like Pravistatin and many more) for lowering Cholesterol:

Dizziness
Blurred Vision
Eye problems
Headaches
Muscle, joint and tendon pain
Memory Loss (legitimate reason for being spacy)
Insomnia
Tiredness
Lupus-like Symptoms
HAIR LOSS ! -- a lot of it... GONE. (Yes, hair loss--right there on the head)

.....and I have them ALL ! Now I'm going to have to eat really healthy because doctor obviously took me off the Pravastatin. I won't be taking cholesterol medications anymore. (AND exercise EVERY SINGLE DAY).

I know that eating healthy is difficult for everyone, but I live in an apartment complex where these ladies LOVE to bake. They know I love sweets, so I receive these delicious desserts quite often. Now, how am I going to say "no"? I wonder if the Doctor will accept that (haha). Actually that doesn't matter so much because at this point I don't remember who my doctor is..

Hi, I am Pam, 60, and I live in Las Vegas. I have had high cholesterol for several years. I am on Lipitor 10 mg daily. My numbers are good with the medication. HDL is a little low but LDL number is also low and the doctor is pleased.

Thanks to my body producing too much cholesterol, I may never be off medication but I feel reducing my weight may help with that goal. If I can't be off, I want to be taking the lowest dose possible.

I joined Spark people in 2013 but only truly committed to the program in January 2014. Since then I am down about 20 pounds. I am not dieting (never will again). I practice portion control and moderation with all foods. I exercise and take my medications. Hopefully this will make my "senior" years more healthy and enjoyable.

Looking forward to being a member of the team.

"NOTHING changes if nothing changes" Remember, while looking forward to reaching your destination you need to enjoy the journey.

With God, all things are possible.

I joined Spark People several months ago, but only recently started tracking and "working" the site. I have high cholesterol due to heredity as well as diet and know I need to get it under control.

HI I'm Cathy (or Cat).
I'm 61 and have been off cholesterol meds for 2 years. My numbers put me in a range that my Dr's feel comfortable that I don't need to go back on at this time.

I am pre-disposed genetically towards obesity, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes. I began fighting it when in my 30's . . . I went through some rough years and the pounds began to increase.... I found myself at an all time high..... and that's when I found SparkPeople.

I've kept off about 12 pounds for one year, and the Drs are happy about that . . . but I want to drop some more.... but it's not about dieting as much as changing what I eat.

I've been reducing my processed carb intake and have lost 3 pounds this past week. . . . and I feel so much better.

I'm working on a plan that I fits my life/lifestyle; one I can stick with for the rest of my life.

I know I can do this . . .

It may sound harsh but I'm not looking to join a team of sympathizers, complainers, whiners or excuse makers.

Am I in the right place??

Come on' . . . let's do this!!!!! Let's make it happen!!!!

Cathy

Carol--I hope your tests come back with good results. I just returned from the doctor's. All my blood results were good. I've got high cholesterol and diabetes 2. Both are currently under control but it is always an uphill battle. I've been on here for less than a month.

Hi Team, my name is Carol and I have had high cholesterol for over a year now. I've tried to change my diet to some degree but I can't seem to get my cholesterol down. I was on medicine but couldn't afford it and now I have changed doctors who wants me to try diet and exercise.
I'm having blood work done again on Monday and hope that it has come down but I don't know what my numbers were the last time.

Hi ; ) I'm Debbie. I hope to change my food plan and reduce my cholesterol. My triglycerides are also high and my family has a genetic problem that keeps meds from working on this. Glad to be here.

Hi I am new to Spark People and ready to lose weight and lower my cholesterol! I have been on cholesterol medicine for the last few years; it has helped me decrease my bad cholesterol levels greatly, but I would LOVE to get healthy and get off the medication entirely! Hi I'm Carol and I'm 46 almost 47 and at one time my cholesterol was at 500, the last time it was checked it was high but I wasn't told the exact numbers. I'm not new to Spark People as I was a member here once before but I am new to the team and would appreciate any help that you all can give. I don't eat alot of fried and greasy foods but I can't say that I'm a healthy eater either. If you are having cramps have you tried taking co enzyme Q10 with your statin it can help reduce the side effects or maby a lower dose. Also if that does not help you can try a different statin, pravachol (pravastatin) has the lowest incident of this side effect, however there are quite a few people who are not able to tolerate any statin.

Hi, Im a mother of three, husband included in that number. Lol.
I recently had blood tests and am in the high end of the healthy scale which scared me a bit. There is problems of high cholesterol on my mothers side and would like the break that trend and show my kids that I practice what I preach. I look forward to keeping tabs on this sparkteam page and losing the weight and cholesterol levels along with it.

Hello All,

The doctors office called last night telling me I need to go on a statin due to high cholesterol. Being I've restarted on my journey with Sparkpeople back in October I decided to join this team in hopes of understanding and get this health issue under control. I have been tracking my exercise and nutrition but now will be watching my cholesterol and sodium within the tracker. Hopefully when I go back in in July for a retest the numbers will be lower.

Hello everyone, I'm a 28-year old single mother of two, ages 2 and 4; I also work full time as an Employment Workshop Trainer. My life is busy and sometimes depressing and to be honest, I haven't intentionally exercised in 2 years! I really just want to get in shape and be healthy enough and have energy enough to enjoy my children instead of being frustrated with them because they have energy like they're supposed to. Joining SparkPeople and the Cholesterol support team is a preventive measure. At my physical, two years ago, i was told that I have low levels of "good" cholesterol mainly due to a lack of exercise. I know what poor cholesterol can do and I don't want to miss out on my babies growing up. I know it's time, I feel it's time and I am motivated more than ever! This isn't a new year's resolution, it's a life time revolution and I'm ready! emoticon

I am new to this team. I am 39 and have never had a problem with high cholesterol or high blood pressure until I started taking a trial seizure medication. I am trying to get my cholesterol under control by diet and exercise because I am trying to avoid more medication.

I am in the same boat, although I never smoked. Was quite hocked at my numbers. I haven't been eating great and I ran out of Thyroid meds (dr wouldn't refill until I came in) so I had blood work.
I am on low dose of meds, with a non-fasting blood work scheduled in two weeks time. I am sure that the numbers are affected (or is that effected??) by my thyroid being out of whack!
So, now I have to prove that I can lower my cholesterol with more exercise and diettary changes. I will, once I get back to normal, refuse meds!
Please I hope you picked things up again. All things in moderation! You don't want to be miserable. You can do it.

My name is Beth and I'm not new to SP or this team, but have just started plugging into my spark teams. I have genetic high cholesterol. I had it checked when I was 12 and it was well over 200 even though I was a healthy weight and had healthy eating habits. My mom, uncles and brother also have extremely high cholesterol.

I took Lipitor for about 5 years and now take Vytorin. Apparently research is inconclusive when it comes to health effects of hereditary high cholesterol. I would love to manage my cholesterol through diet and natural methods and get off of Vytorin due to the cost and complications associated with the medicine.

Hi, I also have been on SP for a long time and new to this team. My cholesterol isn't real high. 212 last blood work. My BP was high which is very unusual, it is always perfect. But now it is back to normal.
I'm married, DH has his cholesterol undercontrol with Crestrol and I'm on a generic Lipitor...one of those big words, I just call it the fake Lipitor.

Hello, I am new team
I also have high cholesterol and triglycerides as well as high blood pressure, pre diabetes, arthritis and COPD.
I believe I can bring several of these problems under control by losing the excess 43 pounds and exercise.
I can not do strenuous exercises, however I can walk, do pool aerobics, Qi gong and some work with light weights and stretch bands.
I am thankful to be a part of this team.
Have a blessed Thanksgiving. emoticon

Hi, I am new to this group. Just found out today that I have high cholesterol and high triglycerides. I hate taking any kind of medications. I am hoping to change it by focusing on better diet and exercise. Hoping my doctor will give me the chance before putting me on meds. My Mom has had by-pass surgery years ago and my dad died from heart attack when I was only 9. Family genes are not good. I am determined to try this without med help though. Looking for any good tips and maybe a buddy to help support.

Hi, new to this forum and looking at really losing weight to avoid taking medicine. Dr threatened me with 6 month check or putting on medicine.

I am going to look around and find the best diet to help me with this. Any suggestions great but I want to figure out something now. I want to start this week.

I am 62 and take have taken cholesterol meds off and on for several years. Recently my doctor put me on Crestor because my cholesterol was 299 and triglycerides were 201. After 6 weeks of this med and experiencing rapid heart rate, I was changed to Zocor. Last check, my cholesterol was 232, but the triglycerides jumped to 256. What would cause this jump, if anyone knows. Since October I have taken off 10.2 pounds by eating fruits, veggies, no butter, salt, sugar, bread, and I've kept it off. Although the number does not match the weight loss on our tracker, I gained weight and started a new tracker on my computer desktop. Any suggestions on lowering the triglycerides will be appreciated. God Bless and have a great day! emoticon

Hi everyone.
Under 30, really overweight and my cholesterol tipped over the normal range. I don't need medication yet and with work, a lifestyle change and lots of motivation hopefully I never will.

This cholesterol is a new thing for me cause my family is all low or normal range. Glad I found a place like Sparkpeople cause I really feel out of my depth.

I have an ECG and a couple of tests to do. But till then I'm trusting in God and putting in the work.

I may not be there yet, but I'm closer than I was Yesterday!

I am not sure that high cholesterol can be corrected without medication as there is a genetic factor. So I take the meds. Nonetheless, I try to maintain a healthy lifestyle - eat lots of fiber, take fish oil and eat lots of chicken, fish, fruits and vegetables and exercise almost daily. Compared to the rest of my family I'm doing great.

I am over sixty and have been taking prescriptions for cholesterol lowering for several years now , right now I am on Crestor . I am trying to find a lifestyle that will get my readings down without meds., I have both high cholesterol and tryg .the Crestor brings it down to normal , however, the stress of taking Crestor and what it might be doing to my health is a concern. I am trying to learn to make food my medicine and exercise my medicine . It sure is difficult but I am trying . Glad to see a spark team for this subject. emoticon a new beginning

HELP

Triglycerides are 426. Cholesterol is 275. I didn't ask about anymore numbers today, as the Dr was pretty irritated with me.

I have 2 months to get myself in gear.

30 lbs overweight and diabetic.

I have a statin prescription, but I haven't been taking it regular. I have been fighting depression and have been eating too many fatty foods.

I did dig out some fish oil and am going to take it regularly.

Hi, I am new here. Not only did I have cholesterol but I've already had a heart attack. At the moment after following a very healthy diet since the heart attack last October and am now on Crestor the cholesterol is currently under control.

The count is done differently here, in the UK. Mine was 5.5 which is borderline but is now 3.4 which is good.

Sadly, I cannot slip my arteries are full of the plaque from the damage done by cholesterol but I can continue to eat a healthy diet and lose some of the flab that is hanging around as well as counting carbs to keep the diabetes under control.

Exercise is still difficult as I run out of puff as soon as I start but I am learning chair exercises and take my lovely dog for a leisurely walk each day.

Looking forrward to getting to know you all.

I have diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol. I've lost 40 lbs so far and my diabetes is under control. But I don't really understand cholesterol and that's why I've joined this group. I know the right diet and exercise will help but I need to learn more specifics. Looking forward to hanging out here.

My doctor suggested a healthier diet like the mediterranean diet and exercise to lower my cholesterol levels before she would even consider medication due to the long term side effects. The programs on SP have helped a great deal in understanding how I have been eating badly and I have found awesome recipes here, which is good because I love all the different flavors I been trying

I have always been active and haven't considered my cholesterol to be an issue until my last check-up. My LDL is too high while my HDL is too low making my overall level too high. who would have thought my eating habits were t blame lol. My doctor suggested the mediteranean diet so I am looking forward to trying new food. BTW I love to eat. emoticon I am open to suggestions about what has worked for others.

Betsey-Lynn, You should check into finding a new doctor. My cholesterol is 284, very high, for the first time in my 48 years of life. I'm about 40 pounds overweight. But my doctor said she is almost positive I can bring my numbers back down to normal by losing the weight and watching what I eat. Although she mentioned medication, she did not push it and I do not want to go that route except as a last resort.

I just found out 2 weeks ago that my cholesterol was high. Never had a problem before. I quit smoking about 3 months ago, so hoping that will help it continue to go down. I'm going to just try to lose the weight slowly. I'm so tired of low carb, low cal, low fat and being limited far too much that I quit within a few weeks.

If anyone has tips or a linkon what NOT to eat from a good source, please let me know. I understand the basics, but eggs, for example. Some say NO! Others say just limit to 2-3 per week max. I don't get it!

Just got my blood work results back today. My total cholesterol is 205, with my HDL at 54 & my LDL at 135. I'm suppose to be eating a low cholesterol diet & exercising. I'll retest in 3 months. My vitamin D was low too, so I'm taking D3 for that.

Hi. I just started SparkPeople today. I was diagnosed with high cholesterol about 6 years ago. I first was on Lipitor (can't remember the mg.), but for the past 4 years, they changed me to 20 mg. Zocor. Please welcome and have a great day!

Hi Team, My Hubby discovered he had a total chol. 241 and he dropped it in 3 months. The doc has him taking Red Yeast Rice. But in his opinion, the biggest reason he has dropped is due to his improved diet and increased exercise. He has been diligent in using Spark to keep track of his food as well. Since it has warmed up he has been spending a lot of energy in the yard and has increased his mileage on the treadmill. He loves his oatmeal topped with cinnamon, and chopped walnuts. He loves red meat but he knows fish, chicken and turkey are better for him. So my job is to help him stay disciplined and stay away from high cholesterol foods.

I am joining this group (I am in the UK) because of my high level of cholesterol. I am going to try and do food tracker for one week and see where I go wrong. I eat with the help of Dr Dukan (who knows this "diet"?). I have been doing it since 31 Dec 2012. I am on a plateau but do not fret too much about it. When I have a blood test I shall share the results with the group but it is not yet scheduled. I am taking 20mg statin every night. I don't like the idea of tablets to be taken for "the rest of my life" though.

Hi, everyone. I'm Liz. I've been with SparkPeople for several years, but mostly just signed up for emails and looking around the site. I'm 49 and had my annual check-up this week. Not so great. My weight is up, my cholesterol is high (doctor put me on meds for that and will recheck in 3 months), and I'm only a few years away from the age my dad was when he had a heart attack. I'm not a very active blogger, but looking for people with the same concerns and goals so that we can support each other.

Hello there!... those numbers are not too bad in my opinion...Total needs to be below 200 and you do...HDL has to be above 40 and you are kind of close; exercise should bring it up...LDL needs to be below 100 but it actually should be around or below 70; you are kind of close again...unless it's genetics, diet and exercise should bring your numbers back to normal...like you said, if you lose weight and really exercise (at least an hour daily, maybe two, 6 days a week and take one day off to recuperate), you should be able to bring those numbers back to normal...so, are you going to try?...keep us posted!!!...

I am new to this group. Got my bloodwork done and for the first time ever was told my number were not good. my total cholesterol is 180 but my hdl is only 34 and my ldl is 111. my doctor, who i am not happy with in general told me she was just goint o put me on medication, when i asked her if i could try diet and working out she said, "at your weight it wont make a difference" so needless to say i am looking for a new doctor, i am back to spark and i joined a gym.

Hello Carol: I'm also on statins because my body makes the cholesterol, not what I eat!...I take Lipitor 80 mg. and Zetia 10mg. and those two keep my levels OK...I used to have over 300 on the total number and had two cardiac arrests and two years ago I had to have a single bypass open heart surgery. Now, I'm as good as new; my numbers are really low (total=103; Triglycerides=89; bad LDL=59; good HDL=28)...I do exercise a lot (jogging and racquetball 6 days a week), but I eat anything I want (with moderation) I I go on diets to keep my weight at 157lbs. (my top weight was 180 a couple of years ago). I took a while to find the right statins for me, but finally settled with Lipitor (atorvastatin). I went to my regular check up today and the doctor said I'm better than OK. My cardiologist wants to see me once a year now.
So, keep up the good work and hope you can reach your weight goal soon and you can bring your cholesterol numbers back to normal so you can live a happy and long normal life like I'm living now!!!...

emoticon Hello all.... my name is Carol, live in California, I'm 65, live by myself. I have two sons, two daughter-in-laws and 3 beautiful grandchildren, Olivia 3, Elijah 1 and my 2nd son has Jackson, 1. Those are my reasons for getting and staying healthy!! emoticon
Since 5/13 I've lost 36 lbs. with sparkpeople (love it here), so went to doctor to get a great bloodwork report, but it didn't work out that way... UGH!!
My cholesterol is 303, triglycerides at 800+ ... I said WHAT ????
I have no idea what happened, but doctor said my body is producing too much cholesterol on it's own, so I'm now just starting on a statin and will check the beginning of April to see how it's working for me.... I wanted to cut back on my meds not add to them??
I was also low in Vitamin D, of course, isn't everyone these days??
So changing to a heart healthy eating plan here and getting out and trying a walking program, slow and easy.... I hate exercise!!
So needless to say, I need all the help and support from this team ASAP!!
I'm here to do whatever I can for all of you also.....
SPARK emoticon

This is new to me, not the overweight part, that has been steady for about 20 years but the high cholesterol is new to me......or maybe newly detected :)
I am a bit overwhelmed, there is so much to do!
I am going to start by planning a weeks worth of meals.
Gees! Louise!! I got myself into this mess, I am ready to turn it around.
This is a great site, I see it will be possible to get healthy again!

Well here I am. I had already joined this team but never got really involved till now. Went to the doctor and he told he either get it down or its meds for you. I got a wake-up call and am taking it seriously. I am kinda still not sure what is bad or good and think it will be a long process for me. the way they read things now a days concerning this subject is confusing to me, but guess I will learn as I go along. First thing I gave up was coffee so I am really blah not having mine this morning.
