Good for you to take a positive step! Boy, can I ever relate to willpower / motivation being lacking! That's my problem with exercise; especially strength. Sometimes the hardest thing to do is taking the first step to dealing with a problem, and you are doing that!

Almost 50 and have been struggling to get my Cholesterol down. Last year the Dr. wanted to put me on meds and I refused. I told him to give me 3 months. I joined Spark People and managed to loose 20 lbs and brought my Cholesterol down. My Dr. was happy. Then.... I tried to do this on my own (without SP); I've gained 10 lbs and my Cholesterol is worse than it was last year. So here I am (again). I hadn't joined a group last year; I'm hope this will help me stick with it! I know what I need to do but the willpower is sometimes lacking. :)

I want to go off my Simvastatin because of the "bad side effects" for my age (66), my bad cholesterol has dropped from 259 to 157 in one year on Simvastatin. My Doctor said no because the side effects are not as damaging as the high cholesterol. It's between a rock and a hard place. Simvastatin is the only RX I take. My promise to myself was never to be on any more than one RX at a time. ALSO my weigh has dropped 245 pounds during that same period. My Doctors goal was for me to drop 10% of my weight, I have dropped just under 13% and I am working on dropping another 25 pounds. I just do not like taking RX's and because of my bad eating habits I am now paying the piper.

My doctor said I have to stay on meds also. Even if I lose. Being 71

Which I had five years ago. Being deathly ill.

I stayed that weight for a year and then I gained the 10 pounds to the good she was happy.

She said the problem if we let you go off the pills.

She finds people do not keep that promisary note true verbal to Doctors..

They gain back weight like I have so with out the pills then one can get real ill.

Very dizzy. If I could stay thin for a good three years so she could see.

Then taking all tests that I was true. She would gradually wean me off. Not cold turkey.

So our life is in there hands. I do understand what she means. She is thin herself but healthy looking.
She has been like that since I have gone to her for 8 years. I even see her shopping and she has her cart all healthy foods.

I like her very much. To me she is like a friend in her office. She never rushes me.

Yet she will speak her mind.

My doctor would be over joyed if I loss like you. My goodness That would be a slap in the face if my doctor never cared.

My doctor gives me so many chances to lose. This is why if I goof now. A doctor does have the right to say.

Your wasting my time. That would be a real embarrasment.

So you have done well. She should be happy for you. emoticon

Today I went to see my Dr and told her I wanted my cholesterol tested. She said go to the lab before you leave. I told her that I always have my cholesterol checked after fasting for 12 hours she said it makes no difference. Is that correct?. I am going to find out what NIH says but I am concerned. I was told over the phone the Dr recommends exercise. Does she listen to me? She should see my Spark fitness minutes I regularly do ST and often walk 4 miles 3 times a week sometimes twice a day. I have lost almost 50 pounds with spark.
Have the guidelines changed or do I look for another Dr.

Maybe this is a silly question, but I am going to ask it anyway:) I am attempting raw foods and no meat (except for occasional canned tuna or salmon). Is it that big of an impact on my cholesterol if I once a week, on Sundays, go out to eat and eat one thing like a burrito, hamburger, or taco after a healthy salad? I just don't want to jeopardize my blood tests in 2 months (May 1). Would once a week indulgence mess up my total cholesterol level in the long run?

If your not on meds, you are very fortunate. Getting a healthful diet that is adequate, moderate, balanced, and varied is the key. Do not rely on supplements to get your vitamins and minerals. Try to get as much from food as possible. Taking a nutrition course at your local community college will give you much insight. Don't trust websites that have their interests above yours. In other words sites that are trying to sell you something. Hope some of my tips help you.

Yes, shrimp have much cholesterol, but they are low calorie. In moderation there should be no problem eating them. Staying away from them may rob you from iodine which you may not be getting if you are using sea salt like I am.

Hello, I guess I am *renew* to the team. I have trouble being consistent. I want to develop some good habits. I am working on tracking. I was surprised to find out that shrimp had so much cholesterol. I'll make a better choice next time.

How many of you have lowered your cholesterol to the point where you were able to get off the drugs? My doctor says that my problem is in my genes and although my numbers are good, I must stay on meds. I am taking 5 mg of Crestor and for financial reasons switching to Lipitor shortly.

I totally agree with Dreamweaver1637 about the baggy clothes. I've been losing weight for some time now (I just found out about Sparkpeople.com yesterday and I love it already!), and I love seeing how baggy my clothes are when I put them on. The challenge is disguising the bagginess so that I don't look frumpy. Eventually I will have to go shopping, and I am NOT looking forward to that! :-\

I have lowered my cholesterol by following the meal plans set up by SP- I found it was very similar to what the doctor recommended. In 6 months, my numbers went below 200 and all the various cholesterol numbers were in the "safe" range. I still have to lower it more but am glad that diet is working- I hate taking medications.

High cholesterol runs in my family. I went to the Dr.4 years ago and my cholesterol was high so he put me on cholesterol meds. for 2 months to bring it down. After that time I went back and he checked my level and it was good, so he said to try taking 500 mg. of Slow Release Niacin and 2-1000mg. fish oil softgels a day and watch what I eat. I have been doing that ever since. I went to the Dr. last year and had some blood drawn to check my cholesterol and I have been able to keep it at a safe level. I would rather do that then be on prescriptions meds for who knows how long. Plus the cost is ridiculous. The Niacin and fish oil are way more reasonable.

Thanks so much for your post. My doc keeps telling me I'm borderline high but no concrete help on how to lower cholesterol without meds. Seems to me, all the exercise in the world won't lower the #!
Sounds like your diet requires a fair amount of discipline but obviously it has paid off! Thanks for all the nutrition tips. emoticon

Hi,
I thought I would pop in here to give you what has been working for me. I've been seeing a nutritionist for the last year. WHEN I eat right I have been able to lower my cholesterol from over 300 to 210 in about 4 months. The problem is the diet is hard for me since I love sweets. This is what I eat.
1. one serving of protein with every meal. Any kind
of meat is allowed but it can only be the size of
my palm.
2. 5-7 servings of veggies a day. 1 serving=1/2 cup
3. 3/4 gallon of water a day
4. no sugar!! This raises your trigs which in turn
raise your cholesterol!
5. one serving of fruit a day - 1/2 cup is a serving
6. 4 servings of beans a day 1/2 cup is a serving
by beans I mean legumes = navy beans, garbanzo
beans, kidney beans, etc.
7. no alcohol! very high in sugar and will raise
your trigs big time!! Believe me I just found
this out for myself. In Jan my Trigs were 130 I
went on vacation and ate and DRANK everything I
wanted to. Well came home tested my blood and my
trigs were up to 387!!! Shocked me back into
reality!!
I'm not saying this will work for everyone but yes, eating the soluble fiber in beans does help lower cholesterol.

Greetings,
Walking used to work for me as far as loosing weight, but not so much now. Also, it is difficult, because i live in TX & when i walk, i end up w/a bad case of allergies. Right now, it's cedar fever...then i get an inertia problem. My hope is to eventually move to Co Sprgs. Also, the wheat allergy is tricky to manage. Corn also gives me problems. Many times when i eat i break out in a sweat. There are some helpful websites on wheat/gluten free products. Also, i contact many places in regards to their products, sometimes even when i am in the grocery store! emoticon Barbarajine

I have loss a pound this week.I was 186 I am going down and also all my clothes are getting baggy. I am now 185

I do leg raises and also squats and dance to music every day . I really found that was what took my weight off along with portions and then walking 5 times a week for a hour. When I just walked. It was not doing anything that much for weight loss. The down on the floor exercises has taken my hips down and top of legs. My advise in love. If your discouraged anyone. Do what I do.

You start io minutes each day leg raises and up to 20 is which I do now. If anyone thinks they can try the boot camp number 1. Try it. I was not able to do that so decided to do on my own. Sure is paying off. I am no young chick. I love to dance so that comes easy. Give it a try. You will be surprised.

Congratulations! on quitting smoking. I'm a bit sensitive to people smoking because I lost my mother to lung cancer. I don't smoke but I think something that might help would be to chew sugar-free gum maybe? I just wanted to congratulate you on your accomplishment!

Honeybee where can I find a good site with a gluten free diet?? I think I'm allergic to wheat. I tried rice pasta and I started to itch like crazy.

Trying to eat right and fix the gluten issue, cholesterol issues and weight is hard to do.

Have you tried a gluten free diet?

Eating turkey and chicken is my way of life. I have to watch everything I eat so I do not accidentally eat a food that will cause a reaction. I can't eat smoked turkey since I ulcers in my mouth and throat. But I can eat oven roasted turkey.

I have high cholesterol so I try and keep my total cholesterol intake to 100 mg a day. ( Dr's. orders)

This is so good but not everyone likes veggies. I make a veggie soup ~ the veggies I love and use a chicken broth (swanson 99% fat free) and eat that plus, after the veggie soup is done I put it into the blender and make it into cream soup or a sauce to go over chicken. Delicious. I enjoy making up different recipes with the same meats to get away from the dullness of plain food.

Like to hear back to know you have found a food plan that works for you.

Have you tried looking at the menu that SP set up for you? The news have been showning that low carb is a good diet for some, with improved cholesterol and better weight loss. I am not familiar with IBS or fibromyalgia so can't really recommend anything. Maybe another member can help. If you would like more on lower your carbs though, please sparkmail me.

I have VERY high cholesterol, but I also have the complication of IBS, and Fibromyalgia. Taking high fiber is difficult for me (IBS). I also have high sugar. I really confused about what to eat. I have to lower my sugar (carbs) AND cholesterol but can't find a food plan that does both. I try sticking to fish, (no seafood), chicken, turkey, etc. but get bored. Any have any suggestions for a beginner?

Definately according to my doctor. Fiber helps flush the cholesterol out of your system instead of it sitting in there being absorbed by the body. Something to that effect...

Great questions & answers. I hope to also learn a lot here.
I'm taking some medications to lower my cholesterol but would love to dump them AS soon as I can safely... Does a high fiber diet have anything to do with lowering cholesterol?

That sounds like genetics. Unfortunately there are a lot of people here with the same problem. I seem to be one of them. Come to the main thread and say hi and jump on in.

This is a cholesterol question and if I should be posting at another place on the msg board, feel free to let me know.

I have been tracking my food in the nutrition tracker, and although my doc says I have high cholesterol, it is clear from the tracker that I'm not taking in a large amt of cholesterol per day. So, if cholesterol in food was the only issue, it seems I wouldn't have a problem.
Does that even matter--or is it the fats in the food that cause the cholesterol problems? This is a nuanced question but I felt that someone on this board would probably have an answer or point me to a resource. Thanks much and have a wonderful weekend.

Thank you for trying to answer my question.

Sorry I have not come to check answers earlier but I have not been home much and just been on sparks long enough to track my food and excersize. I finally opened my email account today to MANY MANY emails awaiting me, lol.

I guess my main question was whether or not there was a thread on recommended low fat/cholesterol cookbooks.

Cookbooks are a little harder. Did you have a specific ones in mind. I know that there a lot of different eating plans. Try going to teams for that eating plan and see if they have a thread for cookbooks etc. Have you checked out SPARKRECIPES? There a re some good recipes there too and they are broke down into groups. Hope that helps, if not et me know and I'll see if I can help more. I lost this thread or I would have answered sooner. Welcome to the team. Nancy

Probably too late with this but for new members one of the best ways to learn how to navigate the different parts of the site is to go to your START page, under MY TOOLS. . At the top of the page is a link called "GETTING STARTED". Click on that and it will show you.

(TYME2SCRAP) Hi Lori, I am not real sure what it is you are looking for..recommended cookbooks for a specific thread, illness, or meals? I am not sure you can do this with Spark People. I know that if you go the the recipes and write cookbooks in the search line, it will bring up a huge list of cookbooks on the right hand side of the page, but unless you are looking for something specific, I am not sure how you would find it because you would then have to read down through all of them. If you type in something too specific, I don't think anything will come up for your search...other than 0 for your search.
If you have a specific recipe in mind, it might be easier. When I am looking for something specific and I can't find it on Spark, I do a google search or a Spark web search and see what comes up. I had the best luck with recipes.com when I was looking for something specific for another spark member a while back after I couldn't find anything under Spark People.
If you go under your Spark Points and do a search the web through Spark, type in any type of cookbook you are looking for...i.e. diabetic cookbook, cholesterol cookbook, etc. it will bring up any number of various web sites with cookbooks for that particular problem. Then just pick and chose what sounds of interest to you.
I don't think this answers your question, but I am not sure what exactly you need.
Sorry I couldn't be more help to you.
Hugs,
Helen

I have sent a spark mail to one of the team leaders and maybe she will be able to help you. I will try to get some more help after I search Spark People and see if this is a FAQ.

(SHERMANYSMILES) Hi Sheri, This has never really been explained to me but I always put the amount of time I exercised for the day. That is what I know other people are doing also.
Hope that helps you.
God bless.

Helen

MICHIEM1, I am not sure what exactly you are looking to do by getting around the system. If you are just looking for information on Cholesterol, you may want to read older threads or comments made by others about their cholesterol or questions. If you look at the main topics under the Cholesterol Support Team, you will find four main topics. The first one General Team Discussion Forum (5/412) is loaded with information. The number 5/412 shows that there is five of the topics showing under this General Team Discussion Forum and there is a total of 412 different threads under this heading. When you click on the numbers to the right of the heading... which is the 5/412...it will show you all the topics under that heading and is full of information. Just go to the thread you want to read and click on that thread or topic, it will open the entire thread for you to read. If you have something more specific in mind, let me know and I will try to answer more fully.
If you are looking for something specific under Cholesterol you can always type the information you want in the Search the Message Boards box above the thread itself but after the topic...for example the topic of this thread is Questions about this team. Then you will see the search box. Put the information you want in the box and hit search. You should get many different threads come up from which you can chose to read the information from.
If you are talking about Spark People in general, it is best to go to your spark page and click on My Tools, then Start and in the middle of the page at the top, click on "Getting Started Guide" and it will help you learn how to use the site. there is so much information here, be careful, go slowly and try not to overload yourself. Just take one small step at a time.
God bless you as you continue to learn and become the healthiest you can be.
Hugs,
Helen

I have a question about the teams challange. Do we put in the amount of time we spend exercising or do we put a 1 for yes and 0 for no.

I am in need of some tips on how to search the threads. for instance I was trying to search for a thread with recommended cookbooks but didn't have any luck. do you have to work things exactly as it would be in a thread or is it like google and will do a general search?
