Hikaru no Go got me into playing Go! *sigh* I suck at it though.

I think the people doing the anime felt there might be a little more to the relationship between Hikaru and Akira than the manga creators, Yumi Hotta and Takeshi Obata. Just... slight differences of facial expressions in the anime imply a whole world of emotions not mentioned. heh heh. I have a lovely collection of Hikaru no Go yaoi dojinshi.

I saw a great little "snapshot" online in photobucket a couple months ago. Someone assembled a few pictures from the anime into this little story:

12-year-old Akira: "Shindo!"
12-year-old Hikaru with big smile: "Toya!"
Akira: "Can I see your hands?"
Hikaru: "Sure!"
Akira thinks and studies hands: "Let's see... The ring finger is longer than the index finger."
Akira thinks and studies hands: "That means he's gay."
Akira with huge, dazzling smile: "Score!"

Heeeeh!? I love Hikaru no Go! I use to play go and watch the show. I knew I recognized them...ah, the iconic blonde and brunette pairing--oposites attract..oh I am sorry, I am getting ahead myself.

BUENITA, my profile pic is from Hikaru no Go! The pic shows Hikaru and his eternal rival, Akira. Thanks for asking--it's my absolute favorite anime.

Welcome Buenita: welcome to the team and welcome to SparkPeople! Good luck with getting your license in the States.

I'm envious of all your Japanese experience--how wonderful! I'm a fan of anime and manga, too. I think most, but definitely not all, of the team are fans.

I hope you like SparkPeople and our team!

Konnichi wa minna-san. Heh. Hi I am Buenita and I joined Spark Dec. 11 mainly too loose weight. Then I got the notion to look for other interests Groups. So Japanese was my second choice after Tennis. :D

I love me some Japanese culture, language, country, onsen, food you name it. (yes, anime, too.)

I lived there for 3.5 year. 3 consecutive and 6 months during college. It was fun. I will be going back but right now I am in the states and trying to re shape myself litteraly.

You know I was maintaing a nice weight while in Japan and then bam back in the states and like 20-30 pounds heavier in 2 years. Argh.

I was on JET and taught English to elementary and Jr. High school kids. Now I am trying to get my license in the states. :D Wish me luck.

Hi, I'm Shirley. Never been to Japan, but learned to count to 20 and a couple of greetings from my father. I see you are posting some very interesting culture information. Can't wait to explore and pick up the new word for the day.

The Tokyo style of dress can be rather shocking...from anime/manga character dress to call girl style...not to offend anyone...but it's true...
They do like the Western style...lots of references to California beach cities or snappy sayings...

Well I am 5'4" and 1/2 and I was shocked at how small everything was. Getting into an elevator seemed claustrophobic. But I love walking and did quite a bit there. You are either walking or riding your bike it seems. They are obsessed with the French and high fashion. I met some interesting characters there including---The Yakuza!

114 yen to the one US $ is great...more buying power for the dollar....today the yen is 89 yen to one US $...no buying power...very poor exchange rate... emoticon

I always check the exchange rate between dollars and yen...and the dollar is a big loser....say a sutra or pray for the dollar raises over 114 yen to a dollar....

Wow, I never thought about a big culture shock hitting 6 months in, but that makes sense.

That's really fascinating about the Japanese economy and attitude about otakus! It's all news for me!

I'm working mega overtime these days and weekends, so I don't know how active *I* will be on this site for a while. But I'll try to at least check it when I can.

I lived in South Africa before I moved here. :) Hmmm... culture shock... I was quite shocked by a lot of things I didn't expect to be shocked by, I think, and it takes a while for some things to properly sink in. I got a pretty bad bout of culture shock about 6 months in, but at the beginning it was pretty smooth sailing. I have a feeling, though, that now I'll get some pretty bad culture shock if I were to move back to South Africa!

The economy here is bad, like anywhere else in the world, but Japan's taken much less of a knock than everywhere else. As a result, the yen-anything exchange rate has skyrocketed. It's been pretty steady at around 120yen per US dollar for ages, but now it's dropped to around 80yen. The same thing has happened with most currencies I look at. Good for us earning yen, but not good for Japanese tourism and exports!

I don't think becoming interested in Japan because of manga/anime is a bad thing. It is a huge part of the culture, after all. I do think a lot of people here just think "what's the big deal??", and definitely look down on people who've become totally obsessed with Japan because of it. (The same way they look down on Japanese people who're totally obsessed with it.) Because, while it is a big part of the culture, there is loads more to it. A lot of people are actually really surprised to hear that it's so popular overseas. My students love shouting out random names of anime and asking if I'd seen it in South Africa, often forgetting that I haven't actually been there in three years. :P

Haha, that's no problem. It would be good if we could make it more active though. I have a look of time to kill at work! :D

Hi Jax,

Where were you living before you moved to Japan? Was Japan a big culture shock for you, or were you pretty prepared?

How is the economy right now in Japan?

A lot of my "information" (but not all) about Japanese culture is deduced from manga and anime, and any cultural explanations that go with them. I've heard that in Japan, becoming interested in Japan because of being a manga/anime fan is a bad thing. Is that true? (Maybe that's something like someone liking the United States because they like Westerns.)

Just curious...

I'm sorry that more people haven't welcomed you to the team yet. Because we're not very active, it can take a while for people to check this team for recent activity.

Hi, thanks for the welcome! ^_^

Haha, if anyone has any questions about Japan, feel free to shoot. I've been here around 3 years now, so know my way around. ;)

Right now it's kinda rainy, miserable weather. :P Up on the mainland (I'm on the island of Okinawa) I'm told it's snowing again. Down here, warm, humid and rainy!
