Hi Everyone:
I went to a class with one of my gal friends from high school at the YMCA, it was fun. I have since purchased a DVD to try to add to my workouts at home. Of course the guys are giving me a hard time. So I have to find time blocks to practice without all the commentary. After reading many of the posts I didn't realize there are so many variations of belly dancing. The one thing I manage so far is to shimmy pretty good....Here's to learning more of this fun ancient art. Sarah

Hello everyone! I just found this group! I've been on sparkpeople for a good handful of years and have had a lot of success. I still have a ways to go! I started doing Tribal Fusion back in January and LOVE IT! I was supposed to perform on the 12th for the first time but due to horrid Midwest weather, the event got cancelled. I love all the strong, powerful women in the belly dance community!

Just attended my first class! It was so much fun! I have been looking for something to help me break free from being so serious and controlled, and the hour I spent with all those laughing ladies was like water for my thirsty soul. I want more!

Hi! I'm new! I've been on SparkPeople for a while and I found this group through an email I got this morning. I've been belly dancing off and on for about a decade or more, but mostly just kind of fiddling with it. In the past year or so I've been practicing every week with friends of mine who are part of a Steampunk belly dance troupe. We've performed twice in public, and are looking to line up new events. My favorite dancer to watch is Rachel Brice. Watching her move is just amazing! I'm also a fan of Mardi Love, as she isn't super skinny but is still an awesome dancer! I look forward to being a part of this group and I hope that it will help me find the motivation to dance every day!

Hi all, I just found this site. I LOVE belly dancing. I used to dance professionally. I taught it for two years at my local gym and I have given private lesson. I miss it so much. My knees are bone on bone, I have a pinched nerve in my neck and two in my low back. I can't move anymore which pains me physically and emotionallly. However, I still listen to the music and play my zils and tabls along with it. One my good days I even get up and move to it to the extent my back and knees will let me.

I am very excited to find this team.

Hello Everyone,

I just returned to SparkPeople after losing 40 pounds. I still need to lose about 20 pounds. I saw the Belly Dancing, and I am so interested in it. I love the outfits and everything, but I know it can be used to lose weight. Please give me any suggestions on where I can find resources to learn how to belly dance. Thanks for any help you can give. I hope you are all having a great weekend.

Summerlyn emoticon

I have already lost 40 pounds over the last year. It can be done.

Hi all! I've been dancing for about 7 years now (not professionally or anything, just around campfires and in living rooms) and I love it. I plan to make it a more regular occurance to help with my weight loss goals.

I've been dancing for a year and have loved it. Always thought bellydance was so beautiful. I wanted to learn for myself, it's always been a goal. And a studio moved right down my street where I was living at the time =). Talk about timing. I have done bellydance for fitness reasons as well, I have health issues and bellydance has been a saving grace as it can be lower impact, but increase flexibility, strength, and muscle isolation. It has made a big difference in my back, ab, and arm strength. And it's beautiful. Right now I cannot afford the classes, so I do my own as I'm able.

Hi guys. I'm FitKiz (or Tae - whatever works for you) and I've been taking belly dance classes off and on since the start of the new year. After the tragic end of my last belly dance class (MY FAVORITE teacher moved to hours I just CAN'T make) I'm mostly doing my dancing with youtube guidance. This is a blessing and a curse for me. I can (and do) turn my video lessons on all the time--and I'm seeing an effect in my waistline--but having an instructor there to interact with pulls a whole lot more effort out of me.

I'm currently in the market for another instructor with better hours, but who knows...

Only you can.

Hi All! I'm Anastasia. I began Belly Dancing almost 7 years ago! I have taken classes in Tribal, Fusion, and Egyptian Styles. Due to chronic depression, I went over a year without dancing - and the inability to be active and new medications caused me to gain weight. Dancing has become such a huge part of me and it broke my heart feeling disconnected from that part of myself for so long! Now, thankfully, I have mustered up the motivation and courage to get back into classes! I started back at Hot Pot Studio in Sacramento. Because I have gained some weight, it's as though I have to learn how to move in my body all over again. I know that consistent classes and practice + attending hot yoga 2x a week is sure to get my body into great shape. I am excited to be here and connecting with so many others on the same path. I hope to talk with you all soon about our dance & wellness journeys! Blessings...

Hi All! I am just back in the studio after 20 years! I allowed my weight to take dance away from me...NO MORE!

It was scary going back with extra pounds, however I did it and I am so glad I did!

I love it too. I take classes in both traditional cabaret and tribal. I love everything about it. I think it appeals to me being its mentally as well as physically challenging. Plus I feel empowered, for the first time in my adult life (41yrs) I am starting to love my body and I am only halfway to where I want to be. I love the music, I also like the hip-scarves, costumes, skirts and the jewelry. I have noticed certain pieces starting to enter into my regular wardrobe

I also performed for the first time with a group for a audience and I loved it. I never thought I would take to performing so easily. I was more nervous practicing, one I was in front of a group, my nervousness just fell away. I can't wait until I am more practiced so I can eventually do a solo.

I love belly dance. It's the only form of exercise that I can honestly admit to enjoying. I've been dancing for 4 years. About half of that has been with instruction. The other half I was too broke to take a class. But recently I've been steadily taking classes for over a year and am now in the Intermediate / Advanced level class. I wouldn't trade it for the world. Belly dance has changed my mind and body for the better.

BTW, I dance cabaret but would like to learn or create a few fusions.

Hello all!

I just started belly dancing this year and enjoying it a ton! I'm especially please since it burns around 300 calories an hour according to the fitness tracker on here!

I try to pratice my shimmy, vibration and undulation for at least 1 minute everytime I go to the bathroom at work (Single room bathroom); it's a great help since it burns an extra 5 calories every time I do!

Greeting's and may I be the first person to Curtsy at you today? One of my favorite greetings. I am 57. I have two questions. What stile dancing outfit will cover my new chest scar(zipper)? Because of stomach scar's there is two and a half inches of my stomach that will not isolate. Do you think perhaps I should take some lessons? Or get a tape? I saw some listed but I could not find them at my library.

Hi I'm Katie I've been belly dancing for a little over 2 years now with a wonderful troupe. We meet on Saturdays and class never seems long enough an hour just doesn't cut it. I have to say the positive energy that is with in the troupe I'm in I hope can be brought to this page.

I'm 27 year old and I work as a Parapro (teacher helper) in a grade school where I live. I'm quirky and can be a bit sarcastic. I hope this keeps me motivated to get in to a more healthy place in my life. It is nice to meet every one.

Hello, my name is Amanda. I've been interested in belly dancing for awhile. All that I know is from videos. I don't have money or time right now for the classes. And the one that I can afford at my school never shows their schedule soon enough.

Hoping to really get involved with it now that I am starting to really look at toning up.

Hello all. I could be considered a new dancer, although I've taken lessons and worked with videos for years. I love the music (any music, actually) and love the moves, but generally have a dozen or so left feet so it takes me a long time to feel competent about any movement. I don't intend to perform for anyone other than myself so it isn't really a problem that my shimmy is more of a spludgy so long as I just keep moving and having fun. I look forward to enjoying the shared knowledge in this team and offer everyone my best wishes.

Greetings Fellow Belly Dance Divas!

I've been taking Belly Dance lessons for about 2 1/2 years now and I love it! While my goal is to dance Tribal Fusion style, I am enjoying learning and mastering the fundamentals. Just signed up to take a 6 week course with one of my favorite dancers/teachers, "Princess Farhana"- super excited about that!

Belly Dancing has been a true blessing to me and I am so grateful to have the time, freedom, and health to dance. I decided to join Sparkpeople to help me attain my goal of losing 25 pounds. Meeting this goal will enhance my self confidence which I know will improve my stage presence.

Happy Belly Dancing to you all! :D

Hi all you beautiful Belly dancers!

I've been belly dancing on and off too since taking a class at the YMCA at 13-I fell in love. I've only actually performed once in that whole time. I suffered from terrible stage fright. That show though, I got through with the help of my Yoga instructors mantra -"I'm healthy, I'm happy, I'm lovable"

So Aine, I'd love to perform again someday. Nice to meet ya-And Emily and Bellydancehappy. Please post as often as you'd like to keep this forum alive.!

Take good care

Hi All,
I've been dancing on and off since 2005 (lots off since I now have 2 kiddos 18 months & 3 yrs!) I am using belly dance as my motivation to become healthy and fit- I signed up for a 4 day workshop with some fabulous dancers in October and the fear factor of not being in shape is really helpful to get those fitness hours in! It's great to see recent activity for this team- I really was thrilled to have found an active forum!
Happy Shimmies :)

Greetings and Salutations!!
'Kay here is the scoop. My name is Aine, I'm 36 and I have been learning belly dance, middle eastern dance and drumming on and off for years. I am a member of the SCA ( a medieval re-enactment group) and many of my friends have middle eastern personas. One of my bestest friends is a professional belly dancer (and an RN, go fig?!!) Planning to get more involved in the dance scene again, mostly because i miss it, well that and the clothes are fun!!

Hey everyone! My name is Heather and I just started belly dancing yesteday! I've wanted to try it for years, but just never did. A couple of weeks ago I decided I was just going to order a DVD and give it a try. I've been in a workout run and thought this might help me get out of it.

Wel..did it ever! I ordered Veena and Neena's Bellydance Fitness for Beginners: Slim Down and I have to say I fell in love with it! The only bad part was that it was only 30 minutes long!! So, yesterday I ordered myself a hip scarf and the Luscious DVD!!!!

My ultimate goal would be to take a belly dancing class, but it's too difficult with my husband's work schedule because I have 3 young children, so for now I plan to shimmy away at home!

I was so excited to find this team! I'm looking forward to working on the challenges and getting tips and advice from everyone!

Hi there, I'm Brandy...I've been belly dancing for 2 years now, and am in a pretty new troupe. We meet on Saturdays, and an hour never feels like enough!

I'm 26, and a daycare worker. I'm artsy-fartsy and enjoy drawing and listening to music...and, of course, belly dancing.

Nice to meet you!

Hello everyone :) I plan on starting belly dancing lessons this summer and am SUPER excited. I've always found belly dancing intriguing, sensual and sexy and I've always wanted to learn. My ex-husband was from Turkey... you would think that he liked it, but he hated belly dancing so I never started it. Now? He's an EX (amen!) and I'm ready to live my life by my standards!

Hello. I have thought about learning belly dancing forever. I figure now might be a good time to coordinate it into my fitness routine. I have been browsing unstructional DVDs on Amazon and am confused about what one to start with. Any advice? Come visit my SparkPage and blogs to learn a lot about me.

Hello, I haven't been in to SP for a long time, but I am trying to get myself reorganized. I will be starting dancing again tomorrow as part of an allover programme. I had a teacher in town, who was moved by her job. Then we had another who has decided to teach children not adults. I purchased a large amount of DVD;s and a teacher training course. One day I hope to be accredited. Help teach a basic group of ladies who want to have fun. I am looking forward to losing at least 10kgs and then I'm making a new outfit.
p.s I am 65

Even though I was fascinated by the art of oriental dance my whole life (being Hispanic, dancing is a huge part of our culture as well), I did not take any formal instruction until 2002. Since then, I've been dancing on and off. I love the art of Middle Eastern dance in all of its forms. I love the cultural aspects and the origins of the dances. I love the different types of music, from the classic and traditional, to the pop music that plays in dance clubs in the Middle East. I've been fortunate to be friends with my first instructor and keep on the loop of things in the Middle Eastern dance world, even if I cannot afford lessons some times! This coming Saturday, I will be attending a dance workshop here in Milwaukee. The featured instructor is Cassandra of Minnesota. I will come here and let you know how it was after! I did attend a workshop by her a few years ago and she is awesome! There will be a great show in the evening also. I am looking forward to it!

Hi everyone, I'm new to Spark People and wanted to introduce myself. I'm just trying to lose a few inches here and there, but it seems to be the worst 'few inches' there are. I hate doing sit-ups/crunches and I'm not sure how well they work anyway. I started doing yoga a few years ago and I love it and while I was doing it, I lost quite a few inches around my middle...I hope it works again. My fingers are crossed! I've also been bellydancing for a little over 11 years and I LOVE IT! I had to take 4 months off recently due to surgeries, etc, and I was having some serious withdrawals! It's hard getting back into it after that long but I'm trying. Hugs Les

hi ladies i took my 1st bellydance class and 7 years ago and fell in love. life and having a baby made it an intermittent thing. then when my son started preschool in sept 08 i got serious and danced three days a week in class plus home practice until sept 09 when my teacher took a sabbatical. I am just getting back on tract by finding several teachers that fit my schedule and im back to three days. i love tribal fusion and finally found a teacher that fits my schedule..yay me! I also signed up for four days of workshops in april that include study with rachel brice so i am thrilled. one reason im working out is to gain the strength and endurance i will need for that.

Hi everyone!

I'm Ashley, I've been belly dancing on and off for about 2 years now. I just took six months off so I'm starting again in January! I'm so excited I love dancing! I joined sp in October to loss weight, I started gaining around Febuary 2009 and since then have managed to put on a good 45 pounds. But it's all good I know 2010 is my year to get my health back on track!

Shimmy-filled salutations!

I'm Nayana, a woman filled with a passion for all forms of movement, especially bellydance. I have been dancing since 2001 and teaching for about three years in central Wisconsin.

I am new to SparkPeople and look forward to learning more about this enormous, amazing site. Most importantly, I am blessed to have found a supportive group of like-minded individuals who share my passions and, dare I say, obsessions.

I look forward to getting to know each of you and becoming friends.

Hi everyone! I just got into belly dancing through the Neena/Veena tapes, and I'm in love with them as a workout routine. I'd love to take real classes, but I live in a tiny town and can't find any in my local area. I'm 24, and trying to get back in shape for my mood, health, and stress level. So nice to find another community of dancers!

Hi, I just found this team and thought I'd join. I had some training in middle eastern dance in my teens and still practice. It will be one of the lessons I will take again when I have more money and am not laid off. Anyway, that is the beginning of my story.
Have a Great Day :)

Hi everyone! I'm forty two years old and recently divorced with no kids. I have a 15 year old furbaby cat. I have been dancing since I was a teen. I danced professionally, stage, DVD and restaurants, but always have had a day job since i graduated college. I tried teaching for a bitbut I think I need better teaching skills first - lol. For some reason I thought I would never find a bellydance spark team, I don't know why. This is sooooo cool! emoticon

Hey, everyone, I'm Alex. I started belly dance classes at the beginning of June, had to take three weeks off when I went out of the country, and now I'm unfortunately looking for a new studio/teacher to go to, as my previous class was on Tuesday nights and, as a grad student, I now have to spend my Tuesday nights learning about "organizational research." Guess where I'd rather be.

I love the dance. It's one of the most beautiful forms of movement I've ever seen, and I'm eager to learn more and actually gain some skill in it. :-P

I am also using bellydance for fitness and weight loss. In fact, my current motivation for eating right and getting in shape is the thought that in 80 days, I may have the chance to take a couple of workshops in Pittsburgh with The Indigo. A friend of mine went to Mecca in San Francisco this summer and took some workshops with Rachel Brice and Zoe Jakes, and she told me to be prepared to work. I know that in my current shape/condition, I wouldn't be able to handle something like that, so I want to be in the best shape I can possibly get in by the end of November.

I also just signed up last night for my first bellydance workshop, a 4-week series that begins on Sept. 26th. Soooo excited!

Hi there! I'm Gina -- I joined this team a few months back but things have been a bit quiet on the forums so I decided to throw out a hi to people!
I got into dancing many years ago but then took a 20 year hiatus and got back into it about 5 years ago or so. I really love it, it's great exercise. I do workouts at home and have done simple classes with friends and younger students.
I'm 53, a mom of seven. I have three of my kids still living with me. I live in China where I do volunteer training. Feel free to visit my spark page and say hi! I'm on a kick now to get in more fitness hours after a miserable month long plateau. It's working and now I'm losing inches. Still would like to see the scale budge! I like Spark People, it's helped me so much to stay focused on the health journey. Hope to meet some friends on this team!
