Just a reminder to keep up those 10 minute daily commitments.
They add up folks!

You are all worth the effort this takes! Truly!

Have a great day!

I been doing well with what I call "Mini Moving Its." I take ten minutes and just get up and move. Since I've been so sedentary it's been a great way to begin. I'll see in a month if I have made the distance, but right now, I feel like I am already doing better than I imagined that I could.

New to the team. Followed someone here who commented on my page/blog. Great way to find similar interest groups!

Not a big internet user. This is about the most I do except library e-books and audio books I borrow for free.

Hi everyone,

I'm not new to SP but I am to this site.

You all have wonderful advice and recommendations. I have a large goal to lose, so I
will be starting small and taking baby steps. I wear a pedometer and keep track of my
steps, and use SP to take care of my food/water, etc.

I also use Leslie Sasone's walk away the pounds, I have about 4 different dvd's. They
are fairly low impact, then I log onto SP and look through the videos to find something to
challenge me and work the rest of my muscles so that I can be fully engaged. I maybe
sore at the end of the day, but at least I accomplished my goals and I would rather go to
bed exhausted from exercise then depressed because I am fat.

Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always just try one more time.

Today is DAY 4 of my commitment to this program.

I have found some great teams to join and found some really great people. I have also found a few not so nice ones. I posted something on a message board on my 2nd day and I received some real ugly and sarcastic responses.

I struggle with motivation and exercising .. everyday. I have a heart condition and whenever my heart rate is elevated I get chest pains. This prospect makes it scary to even think about exercising. But each time I think about giving up (again) I remember that my Mom was extremely overweight and she died from a massive heart attack at age 61. I take after my Mom and I am extremely overweight with a heart condition .. and I am 57.

emoticon

This what I am going to keep on doing. I have a son and a beautiful daughter-in-law who are struggling to have children and I will not miss out on grandchildren.

Terri

I have not been on. I got cataracts removed from one eye. "I wear my sunglasses at night" "blinded by the light" but "I can see clearly now..." Hahaha emoticon

I think I set my pedometer wrong...all day 325 steps no way!!!

I leave my walker near a bench and walk on my own...not a full gait but getting from point A-B.

Yo ticker! Please move down. 222-223 is not happening. Come on 220, we'll start from there okay? Ugh, ugh, turtle moving!

Hi All,

I am not new to SP. I am new to this team, I just got serious about my goals/my journey over the past few months. Just last month I committed to consistent daily physical activity. I found this team through others and am very happy to "meet" you all. Plus size exercise is not for the faint of heart, but it is definitely worth it. I look forward to givng and getting support on this journey from folks who know exactly what it feels like to manipulate a plus sized frame through daily activities. emoticon

Something I recently heard that I found helpful/comforting: "When you are driving, and you make a wrong turn or miss an exit, does your GPS say 'Well, you blew it, you might as well just go home'? No, it doesn't. It just says 'Recalculating' and then tells you the quickest route for you to get back on track to your destination. Why should you be any different with yourself?"

I love that!

Never take meds on an empty stomach. Your cal. for breakfast should be at least 400 calories. So it's a full breakfast. Been there done that.
Get plenty of arm exercise for you will have to brace your weight on them after the surgery. You'll have PT and OT...do not be overwhelmed by that... you'll learn more about you through rehab. fun/tears and guess what? U R not alone.

I borrowed my neighbors 2lb weights. Yep it took 2 trips. I used another's big ball yep I fell off of it. So I'm doing sit down stuff now... emoticon

Well TO GOD BE ALL OF THE GLORY, AND hello 2009GETINLINE. I too have been told to purchase a walker. My knees have been under attack for at least 10 years and now they want to replace both of them. Next Monday, I am starting water arobics in a heated pool at the gym, this is what another orthopedic doctor has told me to do to lose the weight so I can have the operation. BUT GOD!!! Only my daddy knows the outcome for me. I really take my hat off to you, (I can see you leaving me and everyone else in the dust), LOL, to God be all of the Glory, you continue to be strong, keep on keeping on, I know some times it gets so hard, I can hardly walk, but I keep on keeping on even when I have to cry, I do what ever I have to do crying. I can't take the pain pills, they mess with my stomach, so I have to use ice and Magneisum Oil with Aloe Vera, and that really helps me to sleep. I have been giving the ladies at my church a little of my oil to put on their aches and pain, and they have had such good reports. I will remember you in my prayers, and you keep on walking on your walker and believeing and trusting that God will bring us both out in victory and in His Time. Jay

Hi Everyone. I feel inspired by the comments here. I'm still walking with a walker, limited leg movement and I limp. But I am able to do sit-down core exercises. I walk with a walker but you can see the dust I leave behind . (hahaha) My neighbors have encouraged me by saying wow you are able to walk much better, give me your walker, you look good, your color is coming back etc. I love it. I also cried me a river this past year because of the pain and swelling, but I'm hanging in there. Glad to be aboard.

Yo ticker! Please move down. 222-223 is not happening. Come on 220, we'll start from there okay? Ugh, ugh, turtle moving!

I'm also new to the Spark teams, but new to Plus Size Exercises. You keep up the good work CYWSMILEY, where can I get the ball. I really feel safe on the ball also. I did them at the gym and it also helped my back and knees. There was no pressure. I broke my butt bone years ago, and it has started to bother me now, and my knees, my daughter in Christ gave me a treadmill, but it hurts to walk on it, but I'm sure I can do the ball if I can find one that holds 272 lbs. May God bless and be with you richly in Jesus Name. One of the 5 people. Jay

Hi all! I am not actually new-new to SP but just found this team and it seemed like a fit. I haven't had a diet or exercise plan in years, but when my blood pressure started going up it woke me up and I have taken all the right steps in the way of nutrition, now it is time to add exercise. I love walking but not in my neighborhood at night (and this is NOT a morning person!) LOL. SOOO I bought a treadmill and will begin working on that!! And the treadmill comes with weights AND a bookstand! I'm nervous and excited about getting started. I'm sure I'll be back soon!

Hi, everyone. I'm not new to SP, but I am to the Plus Size Exercise Team. I've been struggling with my Plus Size and having to replace my wardrobe. When it's hard to get around and even walk, it's difficult to exercise the way I should to keep from gaining more weight. I understand if one has trouble sleeping and using a Cpap, I am more likely to retain or gain the excess weight.

Please help me get started on this much-needed journey! emoticon emoticon

Please go into this knowing that the only way it will work for you is when you identify it as a true lifestyle change. Not. A. Diet.

There will be no "going back to eating normally" (unless you change to a new normal for you) and NO, you can never say "I'm done!" and expect the health benefits and pounds to stay unchanged. This may sound harsh, but it's the truest thing I know.

Do a little better today than you did yesterday, make small promises to yourself, achieve them, congratulate yourself even on the smallest accomplishments (because added up, they can make big changes over time!) Be patient and don't expect to be perfect.

You are worth the effort this takes!

"Don't let the fear of the time it will take to accomplish something stand in the way of your doing it. The time will pass anyway; we might just as well put that passing time to the best possible use."

I have found this post very inspirational as well. I have been feeling very down because of "supposedly" not having any time to exercise, and when I do try it seems I get resistance from the hubby who says he likes me the way I am. I will try to stick to 10 minutes a day. Crap, blew it already. I WILL DO 10 MINUTES A DAY - FOR ME!!!!!

Start with just 10 minutes a day, make that promise to yourself.
Keep your promise to yourself and repeat.

This builds good habits and you can always do more than the 10 minutes!

With it being so hot I find it best to go for walking first thing in the morning. I was out the door at 7am this morning to walk this morning and was luck cause God sent me bunnies to look at while watching. I love walking though my park first thing in the morning when it's much cooler and you can wear pants. All the wildlife is out and scrounging for food. So not only do I get a walk in, I get entertainment too. Always bring non caffinated liquid with you when you walk anywhere though.

I know that i am probably one of the newest here but I love working out on the stability ball. I find I have more mobility and strength from doing that. There are lots of ball workout DVDs and there are professional balls that carry over 2000 lbs so you can feel safe.

If you have any nagging injuries that prevent you from working out on your feet or possibly a back problem, try swimming! There's resistance, but it doesn't put pressure on specific joints. And, because you're already in water, you won't even realize you're sweating. You don't even need to know how to swim, just walking or moving in the shallow end will give you a great start and is hard enough.

I know most of you are probably thinking that you wouldn't be caught dead at a public pool in a swimsuit (I know I used to!), but I just have to keep remembering that it's all for a reason and one day, I'll be one of the fit people at the pool that unfit people are worried about :) Everyone starts somewhere. Also, I spent some money to invest in a suit that looks amazing (underwire in a swimsuit!) from Lane Bryant. It's kept my confidence up while the waistline goes down.

You can feel sore tomorrow or you can feel sorry tomorrow. You choose.

You can't outrun your fork!

Your answer is in the scripture in your signature line. You can do all things through Christ who strengthens you. Turn your reasons you can't do it today into reasons you can. Just think how different the world would be if Jesus had a whole list of why He couldn't die on the cross for us that day. There would be no salvation. All you need is ONE reason why you can, then run with it!

1st goal 255# MET 2/20/12 (Update: Met this goal but now have gained the weight back so it is now a goal once again)
2nd goal 205#
3rd goal 155#

I hate exercise - I give up in just the shortest period of time and I will come up with EVERY REASON why I can't do it today! I have nerve damage in both feet so anything on my feet damages me for hours but what do you do? You have to press forward. Any advice for someone with so much weight to lose who hates to exercise?

Curves is awesome! Before I moved I went there. You will love it. You are not doing the same thing for the whole time and it allows you to work muscles one machine wouldn't. It took me forever to learn how to hula hoop. Once I did I wanted one to take home! I personally would hold off on investing in a piece of equipment. That is a big descision. I would go to a gym for a trial membership and try them out first. Hope this helps.

If you have access to a pool -- SWIM. If you can't swim, tread water. If you can't tread water, walk the pool. It's amazing exercise for your entire body AND very easy on the joints and spine. If the pool you go to has an aqua aerobics class, take it. Don't be afraid, do what you can and work up to the whole thing if you can't do it all. They're fun and great exercise that won't destroy your joints.

Try and not let anything or anyone get you down. Be true to yourself and your body. I do a little meditating before I exercise so it clears my mind and body of any negative thoughts and feels.

1. Meditate for 15 minutes
2. Relax your mind and body
3. See yourself accomplishing your goal
4. Eat the right kinds of foods
5. Exercise your body to the point you can start feeling it.

Try these and I know you should have fun while you exercise and don't let people say you can't do it. I thought that and now I am better then I have ever been. I told myself that I will not let things get me down. Now I am on an even steady climb to reach my ultimate goal of losing 100 lbs by next summer.

Be patient with yourself and with this process.
It takes time to change your habits and behaviors.

Try not to obsess over the numbers on the scale, but do pay attention to success in other ways.

I know it's cliche but, be your own best friend. Treat yourself as you would a good friend.
This will help you continue to build good mental and physical habits over time.

A Gazelle is a very simple elliptical machine--basically a frame with two swings (one for each foot), so your legs go back and forth in a kind of walking motion. There are various models, some sturdier or with more computerized stuff (timer, heart rate monitor, etc.). Try googling Tony Little Gazelle. You can vary the parts of the body worked by changing body position slightly (stand on toes, push/pull with arms, etc.) It's fairly cheap, folds for storage, and no impact. It's certainly better than nothing for when you're watching TV or something--or if you're a beginning exerciser--but I don't think I'd recommend one for serious exercise.

What's a gazelle? You mentioned it in this thread, and I'm unfamiliar with the term.

Thanks.

This is a great thread but I see nothing much is going on here. I read all of the posts and I found it to be very uplifting.

My thought on this subject is having a positive attitude.Lord knows, we should all count our blessing.

I am new here, and I can say what I feel is working for me is that I have found something I truly enjoy. I have the Wii Zumba game. I am going to buy a bike soon. I love anything relating to the water so I plan to include that as much as possible too.

I was making the same debate on those 2 as well in the past.... The advice I got was that the elliptical is easier on the knees PLUS it burns more calories faster! The treadmills can be a lil bulky if u want to watch tv while doing it lol.. so it kinda gets in the way... mine wound up being a waist of money though... I just wasn't that into it (the treadmill) BUT... If ur in bad shape and it's hard to even walk a department store I would recommend a treadmill you can go at ur own pace and it's not a hard work out of course... but if u got the energy to do the elliptical by ALL means that would be the best choice! Hope this helps!

Hello there..I am new to SparkPeople and just getting started. I am looking at getting either a treadmill or an elliptical machine. Any advice on which one? I am about 50 pounds overweight and not in good shape. I have also started going to Curves 4-5 days a week. Any help would be appreciated!

I use Leslie Sansone "walking to Fitness" dvd. It is simple , doesn't require alot of room and it really gets you moving.

PJOY17--I think one motivator for you could be your ticker! You are half way there! Are you having trouble sleeping at night or do you just seem to be extra tired? I find living in Michigan that not getting enough sunlight really slows me down. My doctor suggested a lamp with a natural sunlight bulb in it. I use it to read a favorite book or place it in the kitchen when I'm cooking! It seems to help!emoticon

What I've found is that weight loss can be both the easiest thing and the most difficult thing all at the same time.

I'm new to sparkpeople as of last night...as working mother and wife I am having difficulty finding time for myself to exercise. Can anyone suggest a DVD or something that I can do that does not take a lot of room? My home is not large with no basement every square inch is used for living. I live in Michigan and it is winter so getting out to walk or job is difficult I am in the country so there are no sidewalks.

What I've found is that weight loss can be both the easiest thing and the most difficult thing all at the same time.

Hi,
I too have been exhausted this week and have had a challenge doing what I normally do, I think it might be in part to this time of year, the holidays, weather changes etc.
I set my daily goals and get them done as soon as possible in the day that way when I get more tired later in the day I have more of my goals met than I would have if I waited to later in the day .
Big Hugs.

Hi everyone.

I have been having a problem, I am tired and seemed to have lost interest in everything. I think it may be my medication. I am having trouble exersising, and eating right this week. I don't have an appointment with my doctor until next month so I need to find a way to motivate myself while I wait.

Janet, the best exercise is talking positive to yourself. Every minute spent doing that will carry you far. It is the negative talk that defeats us. It is only thoughts but those thoughts are very powerful. Somehow we don't believe the positive thoughts will help us, but look what our negative thoughts have done? Chris

It felt like I was not moving, but I guess I was. Even turtles eventually move from place to place. chris

I like to try and challange myself...if I'm on the treadmill I will try to run 1 minute longer than the last time I was on. If I'm on the bike I try to go for just 2 more mins of biking....I just keep telling myself "I AM WORTH IT!!! I CAN DO THIS!!!" If I am really sore afterwards I try to swim in the gym pool for a short while to help loosen up the sore muscles. HTH

My tip is don't be afraid to start over. You are worth another try!

When I need inspiration I come to Sparkpeople. It is the one place where I know someone will understand me and not judge me. There are thousands of members and chances are someone will have had the same fears, doubts and problems that you have and they don't mind sharing how they worked through it. Next time you will help them. It is a great place to find comfort and support. Keep trying!!!!!!

I've beem using Turbo Jam because it is fun stand-up exercise, and I also use the ellyptical machine and do strength training. In addition, I walk 7 miles when I can.

I would say to just jump in. Post a message about something you need help with and you'll find you have instant friends and support. Check in with your teams often.

And remember to forgive yourself, no one is perfect and a candy bar isn't going to break months of hard work so let it go.

I am very very new here, still in my first week. I have found the boards to be very helpful as well as writing blogs and adding notes to the exercise and food logs. It really keeps me focused and on target. Thanks to everyone for the support and suggestions.

Great advice QT!

I would suggest making sure you stay connected. These boards are a wonderful tool for that. Many times, even if we have a big family, or lots of friends around, they are not on the same "wagon" and there are even husbands out there who either unintentionally, or intentionally, sabotage our efforts. So having someone, or many people, to talk to is very important.
