I'm a newbie to bento too, but I agree that the idea of planning it out, keeping an aesthetic in mind, makes me consider more what I'm eating. I keep better balance, and I eat more veggies, since I'm more aware of colour now.
I have to re-lose some weight, and have recently gotten into making bento boxes, thought that these could dovetail pretty well. I really think that the focus of making a bento box for my lunch gets me to take care of me better.
I look forward to reading about and seeing everyone's creative ideas!
I started off with some more tupperware type boxes from IKEA--they have some nice shallow ones that can work as single layer bento boxes, but receintly received my first bento-specific box from Amazon--I have yet to pack it.
