Haha, speaking of letting things lapse... As soon as the weather turns nice I am outside these days working on the yard and then too tired to concentrate on the computer. Not complaining, at least I enjoy being outside now. Before losing weight it wasn't any fun contemplating the hard work and exhaustion. Mind you, I enjoy gardening but it used to be a lot more painful.

Been on vaca from work (man, did I need a mental break from it!) and have been outside all the time even when it has been chilly. Did manage to make myself a few 'home bento' meals but not photo worthy. It has been fun having time to pack some bento-ish lunches for my hubbie too. Though, he doesn't like anything cute or want things that can't be picked up and eaten out of hand. Makes it challenging!

Hope you have been able to get more bento made for yourself. Certainly cheaper than hospital cafeteria food. (And probably less calories...that food is so scrumptious these days but not always low-cal!)

Hi Molly,

I checked out your blog. Very cool -- and helpful! I didn't get to cooking and lunch prep yesterday but maybe I will today. If not, it's the hospital cafeteria again for me this week! Once I get going with this, I'll start a bento blog. I've started several blogs over the years, but tend to let them lapse.

Happy mom's day! --Lisa

Hi Lisa,
My little blog is very kindergarten and not all fancy but here is the addy:
geminisdream.blogspot.com/

Yup, I'm the one who doesn't eat rice and try to limit my wheat. After my gastric bypass those things either don't agree with my surgical pouch or are just tooooooo tempting and make me want to eat wrong. haha (former bread junkie!) It has been fun finding new substitutes for the rice such as the barley and cousous.

Weekends are great for stocking up on bento stash, hope you get a lot accomplished and have a happy Mother's Day!

Molly

Hi Molly,

Nice to meet you. Sorry to hear about hours being cut -- unless that's a good thing in your book. If so, well then congratulations! :-)

I took a picture of my first bento, but haven't posted it yet. With the weekend coming up (yeah!), I hope to get some cooking done. I'll start taking pics. Where do you post your photos?

I enjoy making basic sushi rolls with white rice, smoked salmon or fake crab and toasted sesame seeds. Three or four pieces with some fruit and a salad makes a pretty filling lunch. I think I read that you stay away from rice and wheat? Can't recall for sure, though.

I try to stick to whole grains for the most part, but I use white rice for sushi. I also love cooking with lentils and beans. I found a recipe on a bento site for spicy lentil balls using red lentils. Those are great and cook up very quickly.

Do you have pics posted someplace?

Hi Lisa, nice to meet you! There ARE so many great things about bento. It can eat up so much time looking at all the fun sites devoted to it too. Being a typical busy person makes it a little more difficult to develop a bento habit but we are all worth the effort.

My work hours got cut recently so I don't get to pack as many lunches as before...mostly I'm a breakfast packer now but it is still a good way to easily practice healthier eating.

Will you (or have you already?) post your bento photos for ideas? Hope so!
Molly

Hi everyone,

I've been a Sparkpeople member for a while, but my involvement tends to wax and wane. I lost 10 pounds on Weight Watchers between Nov 1 and Jan 1 last year. I've maintained my weight, but now I'm motivated to tackle another 5 pounds by the first week in June. I know what I need to do, and didn't want to pay for Weight Watchers again. SparkPeople really helps fill the void and provides a method for tracking my food and calculating nutritional information.

I first became interested in Bento Boxes after reading an article in the Sac Bee. A few days ago, I bought a Laptop Lunch kit from our local Co-Op. I love the idea of Bentos namely for portion control. It also requires that I do some advanced planning for meals, which is a part of eating well and losing weight.

I can't believe how many websites are devoted to bentos. I'm a foodie and enjoy cooking up batches of food on the weekends to use throughout the week and freeze. I'm sure I'll find more inspiration and ideas from this group!
