We're around, promise. The best thing I've done with bento is when I'm cooking I freeze small bento sized portions of leftovers. That way they're ready to go when I'm throwing a box together. I tend to fill out the rest of it with veggies (I love using Laughing Cow in place of a dip). Obviously it helps if you have access to a microwave to reheat the leftovers though.

Hi there! Where is everybody? I love bentoing! I started Sparks about a month ago and haven't thought about making a bento until realizing that school will be starting soon so I should make sure I have everything I need for the kids and myself. I find I usually don't make one just for myself, I need to mass produce them I guess.

I hope more people jump back into this so I can get more wonderful ideas!

I've been eating rather crappily this week. In part due to lack of interest in food, a hectic work week and also (very!) poor planning. But looking through the posts and recipes here has encouraged me up to get back with it!

THINMINTMOMMY, I actually experienced the same thing when I moved to Houston from the PNW ... couldn't walk anywhere, portion sizes, etc. Once moving to Pittsburgh, I've been able to lose and/or maintain. We gave up the car and walk or bus it and that helps a lot!

And my son (nearly 16) carries a bento box to school and, yes, it draws comments but he loves his, too. Still, in a school where Smuckers Uncrustables, french fries and stawberry milk are considered lunch, we're not sure if it's the bento box itself of the novelty of real food! (Kid's are always asking to try something.)

Ohayou gozaimasu!!! I'm happy to find this page. I moved back to US in June after living in Japan for 3 1/2 years. It is in Japan that I jump started my weight loss. I lost 60 lbs there. The portion standards in Japan made it so much easier to lose the weight. But being back in the US makes it difficult to maintain a healthy lifestyle. The reliance on cars rather than walking or public transportation. The hugely inflated portions. The reliance on processed foods rather than using fresh whole foods.

My husband has gained back almost 30 lbs after losing 60 as well. But we are determined to keep pushing on. Some days my car sits in the driveway, days at a time, while I rely on my bike to get me hither and yon.

We have loved using our bentos we brought back from Japan. Mainly kid ones but hubby and I have 1 we share. I'll have to order more. Jbox is a great site. My kids say the students at school stare at them when they use their bentos but they still love to use them.

You can be the hammer, making things happen, or you can be the nail that sits there and gets pummeled over and over.

If you’re starting to feel like a nail, it’s up to you to keep your program moving forward.

How are things going for everyone so far today? Yesterday I had a kid home sick from school, and it looks like I've caught whatever she's had now too. In fact, she's home again today, so I think we're both just going to end up as useless lumps on the couch, even though I really need to get to the store.

I'm kinda stumped what to make for dinner too. That could be the dizziness talking, but bleh, decisions need to be made soon so I can pull yummies out of the freezer.

All of that sounds great, Tink! I have been on vacation this past week, so I haven't made any bentos...
However, I'm sooooo excited! While I was away, the tons of bento boxes and other bento goodies that I ordered online arrived at my office! Yay! The bentos I bought are so SMALL...I KNEW that they were little...but WOW! I'll have to pack several bentos to eat as mini meals all day long. The smaller sizer sure will make packing them easier, though! I was struggling with the much, much larger containers I was using before.

Everything is so CUTE!

Good morning, everyone! I feel bad for being so much awol. April's a rough month for our family, but those hard days are past, and it's time to get back into the saddle again.

Still haven't packed my bento yet. I'm torn between making polenta with mushroom gravy to tuck in there, or just putting in the leftover Japanese curry that we had for dinner last night. It was SO GOOD! I keep eyeing Maki's Japanese potato salad too but yikes! the calories...

Yeah, I'm super lucky with my yard. No kidding, the soil is BLACK! It's every gardener's dream. Even someone with a black thumb like me can grow stuff. I had cukes, tomatoes and peppers out the nose last year.

This year, we fenced the garden to keep the bunnies out.

That's so nice that you can grow some of your own food, Tink. I have planters on my apt terrrace, but I'm going to be moving this summer...so no gardening for me this year! I never had very much luck with the planters. The only thing that really grew for me were green beans and peas.

I have tiny cookie cutters, so I need to start using them for my bentos! Maybe tomorrow...hmm...

I've got two bentos (snack & lunch) again today. I really need to get a better camera, but for now the one on my cell phone will have to do. I'm posting bento pics on my spark blog and onto flickr (bento box pool).

My bento's kinda small today, but I broke out the cutters for lots of cute shapes. There's turkey rolls, flower string cheese, grape tomatoes, cucumbers and an apple bunny.

In other news, I'm going out to work in the garden today! The weather has been fighting me for a good time to do it. On the days I could plant, it's rained (or snowed!!), days that I couldn't? Sunny and warm as could be. But it looks like today is a go!

Confession time: I've picked my garden produce based on what I want to go in my bento. So there's lots of bell peppers and cherry tomato plants.

Hi, gang!
I'm new to bento-ing also. I have been bringing my lunch to work regularly for several months to save money and because I'm controlling a gall bladder issue with a low-fat diet. It has also helped me stay on track with my eating and lose weight!

I had been a fan of the Vegan Lunchbox blog, and now that I'm actively looking for bento info, I've found many more. I like Japanese food, but I am interested in bringing a variety of foods for lunch.

Today I packed a lunch bento and a snack/breakfast bento (which has now been devoured!). I wish we could post pictures! I don't have much bento equipment yet. I'm using a Rubbermaid "Take-along" container for lunch today. I do have another box (Fit & Fresh), which is a nice box, but not so great for horizontal bento packing. At some point in the near future, I'll be making a trip to the local H-Mart (big Korean grocery store) for more bento gear and to stock up on yummy, cheap Asian foods and ingredients!

Hello from another forum newbie! Bento'ing is new for me but making my own lunches and working at keeping portions small is not. Am amazed to see all the Bento artwork all over the internet, it is very inspirational! I've been assembling gear over the last few weeks and this weekend spent the time making some matching Kinchaku bags for my sets.

Since I am up at 3 in the morning for my job, I can't be doing a lot of box prep each day (makes too much noise) so mostly I do it all Sunday night and then add the fresh ingredients daily before I head out the door. Entrées that will be from today's prep as well as freezer stash: Veggie sloppy joe mix, turkey chili, chicken/pesto/ff cream cheese pinwheels, tofu cubes sautéed w/teriyaki and PK's Meat Crust Pizza (recipe on sparkrecipes). Fresh go-withs will be: grapes, cucumbers, broccoli slaw, almond protein mini muffins, cantaloupe, jicama in pretty shapes, and for a few desserts tofu cupcakes (recipe also on sparkrecipes). Not being a rice or pasta eater makes it difficult to follow the Bento'ing portion rules but I still enjoy putting together pretty combinations. It has been a fun way to reinvigorate my food plan.

Hope you have a great week!

Molly

My turn to babble - hurray!!!

I am returning once again to SparkPeople to help loose weight - I have been bentoing off and on for a few years as well. During my pregnancy it was especially helpful because of being borderline gestational diabetic. So making 4 bento meals for me while I was still working helped out alot! I unfortunately slacked off in these postpartum months. But I am ready to get my act together - especially since it's a new year and the baby is having more of a schedule - which means I can plan better.

I look forward to sharing some bento-ness with people (yes I make up words with bento in it - lol)

Have a beautiful day!

You can go here and find some places on the map:

lunchinabox.net/bento-store-locator/

or you can always get some really cute and cheap stuff online at ichibankanusa.com like I always do. You can get boxes for under 2 bucks on there, and they're not crappy, either.

Hey Everyone,
I just joined yesterday. I LOVE bento, but I'm not sure where to get good supplies. I live in the Bay Area (vallejo) and the only places i know of are on the other side of the bay. It's a big hassle, especially on the weekdays to try and get through all that traffic sometimes emoticon (did I mention that i'm usually broke? LOL)
Anyone have any suggestions?

Hey, Val! Welcome to the team! I'm Jen, and It's nice to meet you, too! I'm new at packing bento boxes too, but I'm trying to pick up as much info about them as I can.

I just posted my first photos on the flickr page about a week ago. I like going there and looking at everyone else's bento lunches so that I can get some ideas. ^__^

Hi! I'm new here as well. :) My name is Val and I'm 23 years old. I'm not very experienced with making bento (although I do know how to prepare onigiri and sushi), but I'm certainly not against eating it. :) I hope I can pick up a few pointers on making bento as well as making new friends here. Nice to meet you all!

*DIVES IN* Hey gurlies! My name is TerriLynn. I'm 22 years old and engaged to be married sometime in the Fall of 09. I love anime/Japanese culture so naturally I'm interested in bento boxes. Unfornately, I've never made one or experienced one...so I will definitely need some help in that area. My fiancee just graduated from culinary art school and is a part of the reason for my 30lb weight gain over the last 3 years.... damn his awesome culinary skills!!! However he also learned how to make sushi so I've been bugging him a lot lately for it... hopefully the onigiri is similar in construction. *sweatdrop*

Yes, and oddly at the same time no. I'm in an accelerated program that does 9 credit hours at one time. It's a LOT of work. So while I'm at the end of the first full year, I'll have 36 hours when this quarter is over, with another half a year to go.

Welcome Lucy! I'm another grad student myself, working on my MFA in Writing. I can totally sympathize with struggling to fit in good choices. But I've noticed I feel better and more capable of handling the pressure of school and life and family when I've got healthier life choices going on. Welcome aboard! We'll make it!

I just noticed that today's feature is college living resources. Maybe a peek through those will give you some ideas on how to balance things and still keep your sanity.

Hello to all! My name is Lucy and I am on week 2 with SP. I just discovered this team and am super excited as I need to continue improving my bento packing. Right now I am working on graduate degrees and it's a struggle fitting healthy choices in, but I know that I need to stop the excuses and just do what I need to do to take care of my health. Hope to get to know more of you in the coming weeks and months!

Cute! Biggest suggestion for picky eaters is cute. I've gotten my cucumber-averse daughter to eat cuke slices once I cut them into pretty little flowers. Something about the attractive factor makes a child more willing to try out a food. Go figure.

As for actual foods, lessee... cut veggies, cherry tomatoes, little cheeses (babybel or Laughing cow) with crackers, sandwiches cut into shapes (I think I have one in my photo gallery), tortilla and meat roll-ups cut into spirals, octodogs, shaped boiled eggs, little smokies, grapes, cherries, other small fruits or cut fruits, riceballs stuffed with a favorite meat (my daughter's favorite is curried chicken), mini meatballs, mini burgers (use dollar rolls for buns), mini pulled pork sammies (pulled pork on dollar rolls) with baked beans and sliced dill pickle.

That's all I can think of for the moment, but if I think of more, I'll definately throw them out there.

I'm back from my first Curves Smart routine and I feel great! It's nice to be back into the swing of things again. It's nice having a quiet house with kids under the instruction of the brave souls called educators. Whee!

I'm going to try making atsuage today for the first time. If it turns out well, I plan to make some nikujaga with what doesn't go in my bento today. (Which I still haven't packed. I'm such a slacker.

After lunch though, I've got a busy day with the kids gone. Errands to run, meal planning to do. I'm just hoping I find some time for writing in all this.

How's Monday treating everyone else?

It's weird, those years between graduating from college and having school-age kids, you feel so out of touch with the schedule of the rest of the world! Really, just about everything revolves around the school year. Someone I know from South Africa even said that they considered September to be the beginning of the year in the United States because they could never get anybody interested in business deals here during the summer, lol.

Anyway, re: Babybell cheese -- do refrigerate it at home, but I wouldn't hesitate to eat one that had been unrefrigerated in a lunchbox for up to 12 hours.

But then again I'm really not fussy about food freshness. I should probably be more concerned about things like that, lol.

Frozen grapes are an excellent idea. Also, somewhere on Lunch In A Box, Biggie goes into food safety. She not only addresses stuff like temperatures, but also covers stuff like the antimacrobial foods and condiments you can use. There's a reason the Japanese add pickled ginger to lunches and put vinegar in rice. It keeps the baddies at bay.

Anyway, I'm back in the saddle today, now that the presentation is over. Phew! It's going to be a beautiful day. (Well, if it'll ever quit raining!) But the kids go back to school Monday and I'm thrilled. Woohoo!

How about adding frozen grapes (or other frozen items) which would defrost slowly in the bento and also act like an edible ice pack to keep the other food items cold?

DS and DH eat their bentos within 3-4 hours of packing and they don't have access to a frig. I read that this amount of time is OK to store room temp food without an ice pack. The blog, lunchinabox.net has a page on food safety for bentos.

Yep, babybels work great in the box. So do laughing cow wedges. They're a nice way to insert some dairy into a lunch too.

Btw, sorry if I seem awol right now, guys. I've got a major (as in 60% of my grade major) paper and presentation due tomorrow. And it's not done. EEK! I should be back in the swing of things come Friday.

So does anyone here ever put babybel cheese in their bentos? I was curious about them. I wonder because they have that wax coating on them do they need refrigerated? It would be awesome if they didn't. I'm finding some difficulty with packing my hubby's lunch because they don't have a fridge for them at work, which is stupid. He just has a tiny locker. I've been packing him very un-bento lunches because I can't really put things into a container like that without refrigeration. I give him things in packages like single serve tuna packs, boxes of raisins, granola bars, things like that. Any suggestions?

I think I'd better make some rice tonight. I've been eating terribly the last couple of days due to the hubby being gone until Tuesday (he left Saturday, work stuff). When he's not home I don't feel like cooking. It's just me and Gwen, and go figure two year olds don't care if you lovingly cooked it on the stove or threw it in the microwave. Lol. But all the microwaving is horrible and my meals have been nothing but junk for days. I think dinner tonight is going to be rice and tuna with soy sauce. Nothing fancy but not reprocessed crud!

Ahh, that's a great recipe! And I adore salmon! I'll have to go poking around Maki's pages a bit more. I know she's got some pretty good recipes going in there. I've got my eye on making her shrimp fritters sometime this week.

Here's a recipe for salted salmon that supposedly goes great in nigiri or as your bento protein:

Yeah I'm not one to ask for cooking advice really. I try but I'm not gifted in that area, lol. I love the microwave and I love my crock-pot! It doesn't help that our apartment has the most suck-tastic stove ever! The thing is like 40 years old or something. One burner doesn't work and another is shaped funny so the pans don't sit flat on it. Also the oven is tiny, I can't even put a cookie sheet in sideways and there is only one rack. T_T

The rice balls look great to me! I keep experimenting with making them out of brown rice, but they keep crumbling. Boo. I'm not sure if I'm just using the wrong rice or if I'm making them wrong. I like stuffing mine with chicken curry, personally, but tuna with mayo is tasty too.

I hadn't thought of tuna in a cup. That might work too. I've just got a freezer full of all sorts of delicious fishies and can't decide how to cook them.

BTW Tink this may be obvious, but what about tuna? You can put it inside some onigiri or just put some in a little cup and put in some crackers to put it on or something like that. I don't know not much of a cook I guess, lol.

Made my first onigiri today!! I think it was decently successful! We'll see how successful when I go to eat it, lol. I am in the process of joining the Flikr group, pending approval, but if you want to see the pic its here:

I'm happy with my first attempt, wee! No filling in it or anything this time, but will probably have some duck sauce and/or soy sauce with it. Yum!

Busy busy day here. I'm registering my first born for middle school today. (sniffs) It's happening too soon!! Anyway, after that, we've been invited to dinner with my in-laws, so I'll be out of the house most of the day.

Btw, I'm on the lookout for bento-friendly fish recipes. If anyone has some, lemme know? I'm trying to work more fish into our diets here.

How are the rest of you today?

I've gotten quite a few bento and supplies from ebay as well. But I can sympathize with not having a place to buy anything locally.

Risa - are they not able to deliver where you live if you order from the internet? Jbox.com is a great place to buy bento boxes and all sorts of accessories. I love that website. I go there to drool, I mean look at things all the time, lol. I'm sure there are other online places that sell bento boxes as well.

Hi Bento Buddies! I was thrilled to find this team. I am Japanese and I did grow up with bento. I was chatting with Tinkerspell, and you know, it didn't occur to me that Bento is a great way for portion control, until she said it!!! The boxes do make the food look appetizing. I actually don't use a bento box (I live in the upper Midwest..can't get a bento box here) , I use tupperware, but I portion everything out to look like a bento for lunch and it is fun. I get too bored with sandwiches. Looking forward to sharing and learning new recipes with you! ~Risa

Great to have you along! I'm a big anime fan too, which oddly enough isn't how I got interested in bento, per se, but it did get me interested in Japanese cuisine... especially okonomiyaki. Gotta love Ukyo.

I'm a big fan of the Jbox site too. So much I want, so limited a pocketbook.

Well, although not sure where to start the topic says jump in, so I guess I'll just do that. Hi I'm Holly a 26 year old mom and wife. I love anime, which is probably why bento seemed a natural extension for me. I can't wait to try making some nifty looking and delicious bento. I was looking around Jbox.com yesterday and I swear I want everything! Well not everything, I only want one bento box, at the moment at least, but I want all the molds and things. I want the cutters for mini sausages, I want the little food separators, oh just so much cool stuff. Its like a whole new set of art tools, but this is art you can eat! With chopsticks! I'm geeking out!! Anyway, I really do hope to make some cool stuff and post pics for you to see, but it won't happen quickly, I have to talk to my husband about room in the budget for some stuff. T_T

Rash crisis was averted, and DD went off to camp today. Yay! I've actually made myself useful too and hit Curves early today, so I can dawdle in the pool this afternoon.

I read Wear More Cashmere over the weekend. (Btw, it's on clearance at B&N if you want it for cheap. My copy cost $1.78.) Pretty fun little book, and a good reminder that we all need some princess treatment once in a while.

Crazy day going on here. My hubby ate my lunch last night for a snack after class. Then my daughter broke out in some rash that looks like chicken pox but doesn't itch like it. So I've gotta drag her off to the doctor to figure out what it is. She's supposed to leave for camp on Monday and she's been crying about possibly having to miss it.

I'm at work today, but I'm house sitting for my bosses (who live where I work), and that means I get to tend (and harvest) their garden. I have Swiss Chard, Broccoli, Lettuce and Snow Peas. Plus some tomatoes in the greenhouse and baby zucchinis coming in. Yum!

Today's a busy day for me. Between the garden and the CSA, most of the day is going to be spent pickling the abundance of cukes that are taking over my house. I'm hoping I'll make it into the pool before the sun sets, but who knows?

Anyone else got an exciting day going?

I'm back from sunny (and wet) Florida! The trip was pretty nice, although I'm very sad that we never made it over to the Japan pavilion in Epcot. It's a long story, but let's just say that we kept getting close, but then something would come up and change plans. I was really itchy for more bento goodies too. Bummer.

In other news, I'm back but not perfectly. I managed to re-sprain my bad ankle over the weekend, so I'm off my feet. Classes are starting back up too, so I've got no excuses not to be doing homework. Hate when that happens.

How are things going with everyone else? Looks like life was quiet while I was gone.

Can't wait to check your gallery for them. I have a few bento pictures in mine as well, but then my computer started being fussy and refusing to send them. Oh well, will try again soon.

Last night was my last class for the quarter, so today's swamped with cleaning the house before we leave on vacation and packing. Whee! Packing. I'm seriously thrilled.

Here's the naughty confession: One of the highlights of my trip is that I'll get to hit the stores in the Japan section of Epcot. Last year I came home with one new bento and a bento bag. This year, I've got my eyes on more bento supplies, some more chopsticks and mebbe a kimono. But I'm really really after those bento supplies.
emoticon

Will be off and on the computer today for stress relief during the day, so I'm around if anyone needs anything.

Hello!
I'm 35, but my birthday is Monday, so I'll be 36. I'm single, but I do have a boyfriend (who also wants to lose weight, but can't seem to give up Pepsi and chili dogs!)
I have about 60 lbs I'd like to lose. so, I bought myself a Laptop Lunch box for my birthday to inspire me and control portions.
And, thanks to Tinkerspell, I figured out how to post pictures on my SparkPage (and I LOVE to take pictures) - so look forward to seeing my lunches!

Hey buddies!

Let's kick off a daily babble. This will be the place for us to introduce ourselves, talk about our days, share what's going on with our lives beyond the bento, ask questions, get advice and do a bit of bonding.

I'll start off by sharing a smidge about me. I'm 32 and a writer, married 13 years, mother of two, graduate student and foodie. I've been overweight most of my life and I'm working to shed the weight gained from college, pregnancy and coping with the death of my third child. As you can probably tell, I'm also a big Disney fan, and yeah, while I love Tink, I'm seriously into Belle as well.

This week has been really stressful for me. It's the last week of class, so I'm struggling to finish my portfolio while running entirely empty on any creative energy. Add to that, we're going on vacation with my parents next week, and I have to get this whole house clean before they get here. ACK! I've been having daydreams about diving into a huge slice of turtle cheesecake with pecans. So far I've resisted... so far.

What's going on with everyone else?
