I'm Carri,
I am here because of Tina-Jane's latest blog. I am in awe of those at goal and love the advice about maintenance because all the valuable experience can be applied even now. I am so grateful this team is open to everyone. I made it to Onederland again this summer after many years and am fighting tooth and nail to stay here. My first lesson in what achieving a goal can do to your head, good and bad. This is my first baby lesson in maintenance and all the rock stars I follow have got it so right, life didn't magically get easier, maintaining even this loss is difficult, and is also worth the effort. I am learning to stop playing games with the numbers and want to get back to losing again. Thanks again for the invite!

I also like the accountability of the maintenance challenges because it's historically been so easy for me to veer off track. Hello,

After reading interesting and entertaining blogs from TINAJANE76, I was invited (by her blog) to read other Team members blogs, as well as to join the team. So here I am.

I'm not yet in my goal weight but 6 pounds from it. I've been several times at it and below, only to see all go wrong as time passes by, gaining not only everything back but more. This time my ultimate goal is not to get to my target weight but to be able to MAINTAIN.

I love SparkPeople, it has taught me well health wise, it gives me lots of tools, and the teams, the people, are giving me the motivation to see the scale move down but for the good reasons, and enjoying it.

I'll take my time to browse around and get to know all this Team offers. I've saved and keep at hand all the info you sent me as a welcome.

Thank you very much to all of you who so dearly contribute for this team to work successfully.

Hi, I'm Jess. I never thought I would do it, but I've lost 31 pounds since starting SP in 2009. I kept meeting goals, leaving, and then coming back a year later and deciding to lose a few more. I was never at an unhealthy weight, I just wanted to feel better about myself. Now I'm at the weight I weighed all through high school. I've lost every emotional pound I gained during a very abusive relationship.

I am unsure of what to do to maintain it though. I've always been bad at eating consistently. I know that I need to keep logging but I thought that maybe joining a team where people are in the same boat might keep me motivated. :)

Your happiness is up to you. Whatever happened in your life to make you who you are up until the point you realize this is irrelevant. It is your responsibility now to take control and change your life to be what you want it to be.

Energy and persistence conquer all things. Make time, not excuses.

Hi, my name is Carol (wife48). I reached my chosen goal yesterday. I began my journey in March of 2013. I have lost 67 pounds and have logged in each and every day for 445 days. I have decided to begin maintenance although I may try to lose a few more pounds. I will continue to monitor my food intake, continue my exercise routine and logging in each and every day. Although I will still be technically overweight according to the BMI scale. At my age I have to come to terms with fact that it is okay as long as I remain healthy. I hope that this team can help me on this part of my journey.

Hello, I am Judy(SINGINGLADY47). I once weighed 357 and now am at 118. Please feel free to visit my Sparkpage to learn a little bit about me and my journey to maintenance. Hello there,
I've finally taken the step and joined this team.
I have lost a good couple of stone over the past year - the quarterly 5% WeightLoss Challenges.
But my skin is not shrinking with me - yes that featured blog said exactly what I've been thinking recently.
So I've decided to take a break from the weight loss, even though I still have a way to go. I have learned a load about myself during these 5% Challenges, and I reckon I should be able to get back to losing weight in a few months.

For the next few months, however, I'd rather stay where I am, and let my body catch up with me.
I'll be continuing with the challenges - there's accountability for exercise and for lifestyle as well, and maintainers are still welcomed.
So if I continue the exercise, and watch my food, - makes it sound too easy! But I know what I'm wanting to do, and I have an idea of how.

I'll be checking out the Big Page of Links as we go on, to get any more ideas, advice and suggestions.

Well, I am ready to declare that I am transitioning to maintenance. I say this with some trepidation. Thank you for the resources shared in the Big Page of Links and to those members that have responded to my questions. You know who you are.

A year ago I began walking with a co-worker to reduce my stress levels. My focus was not weight reduction. I knew that I needed to reduce my stress to improve both my mental outlook and improve my physical health. I had allowed myself to gain 70+ pounds over the course of 25 - 30 years and I was close to an obese BMI. Mentally, I was a wreck.

For 6 months I focused on establishing and maintaining a regular walking routine. Near the end of that 6 month period I took a Health Assessment provided by my health provider and decided it was time to address my nutrition. It was at that time that I returned to SparkPeople. I had been introduced to the site in 2010, spent a brief time here and then allowed life events to derail my attempts at improved health.

I have made great strides in improving my nutrition over the past 5 months, have continued a regular walking routine and added strength training. During the past year I have experienced challenging life events that would have derailed my efforts in the past. Not this time.

Yesterday, I started using some of the tools shared (weighted averages, trend lines, etc.) to explore my past and current progress as I transition to maintenance and establish a goal weight. Honestly, I don't know what that number is going to be which makes me nervous. But, I realize determining that number will be a process of discovery for me and I am on my way.

Upon reflection in recent days, it seems to me that I never traveled this road before because I believed that it wasn't possible. I knew no successful maintainers in my life until coming across this site and team of people. So, I figured why bother. People lose weight all the time; but, they never keep it off. I trust that you are "real" people sharing "real" experiences and are not "virtual" creations. You have given me hope and provided inspiration.

I cannot say "THANK YOU!" enough to my co-worker and friend and those of you that have supported me in my journey.

Looking forward to joining the ranks of the maintainers...

Hi. I'm 4 lbs from my goal and am starting the gradual transition into maintenance. I am 59 yo female, married almost 28 years to a great DH and have 3 sons, 24, 22, 19. We live in a semi-rural area and have 4 dogs, 5 cats and a bearded dragon.

I started seriously working on changing my eating and exercise habits mid-July of 2013 and am thrilled at my success ( emoticon 76 lbs.) and feel great. I am determined to become one of the 5% who keep the weight off and believe this team will help me do that.

I love gardening, reading, kayaking, swimming, water aerobics, walking the dogs, hiking and cooking. I worked as a Registered Dietitian full and part time for 25 years, but have let my registration lapse. I'm an aspiring romance novelist who has written several manuscripts but am not yet published.

I am looking forward to getting to know you all and participating on the team.

I am currently at 76 weeks in maintenance. Recently, I have been struggling a bit with mindful eating....I know the reason is that we are in the process of moving for the first time( family of 6) after living here for 13 years. We are so excited to be settled in our new house though!
The pressures have been heavy and I have allowed myself to cave into the habit of occasional mindless eating. Lol! It never pays to yield to that sort of pressure...of this I can testify to.

So, I chose what I believe to be MY main struggle...desserts. emoticon ....or anything that is laden with sugar.
I KNOW for certain that I simply cannot eat just ONE of anything. So, for me, I can't let myself begin. Today is Day 9 of my "no dessert" streak. So far so good...&100% consistent. emoticon I am feeling better, my digestion is happy, my fuel choices have been ideal for 9 days and I am anticipating prime health very soon.
I will NOT let myself cave in again....what a HILL to climb out of. Whew... emoticon

I hope to be more active here on this inspiring team....as much as I can.

Some of you will know me from Chair Exercise Team - -I am an Australian and was 374lb approx (I work in kg) I have lost 143lb approx. but haven't lost for maybe 2 1/2 years now even though I am still 233lb(approx) !! In my case as in most people - its my own fault - I have "relaxed" in the important things like portion control but I still try to work hard on fitness and mobility and haven't actually gained
Unfortunately recently the health setback I had - I had a blocked bowel - and the hospital fiddled about and I didn't get any nourishment - except an odd saline drip - for 13days - yes I lost 15lb - but with it 4 years of muscle development and strength and my hard won independence!! So I have to start again building muscle strength and flexibility - I have kept half that hospital weight loss weight off though and the weight I had previously lost and fitness I had gained has doubtless helped recovery.
I was persuaded to join by 4A-HEALTHY-BMI - since I have lost 10%+ of my body weight and am keeping it off - however I - like many others I feel - thought that Maintenance was when one had reached their goal or "comfortable" weight and I have a ways to go before that.
I will apologise now as I will not be as active nin this team as I would like as the Chair Exercise Team and associated resources keeeps me busy.

Hi - I'm Linda. I'm a "young and fit" 63 yrs old. I started at 173# in mid-March of 2013. I hit my original goal of 125# in the fall, then decided (with my doctor's approval) that I would be more comfortable between 120-125, and hit 120 in January. Once again, recalibrated (in league w my doctor) and decided that for my frame, etc., I would be happiest fluctuating between 115-120. I have been maintaining around 116-117 for the past 6 weeks, and it feels GREAT!!! And it requires logging all my food (forever), trading off "debits" and "credits" to accommodate special occasions, etc., weighing myself consistently and (key to success and health...) exercising religiously (!) - cardio, strength and flexibility -- on average, five times a week. I love the way I eat and move, and a whole host of aches and pains have disappeared. SO - to sum it up, I've lost 56-57 pounds over the past year.

Hurray! I just got off of the scale and I'm at my goal weight. It took me about two years to lose seventy-six pounds to get here. Now I need to work on maintaining. I plan to keep entering my foods and exercise on SP since I have found that to be very helpful. Since I weigh myself every day, I know that my weight will fluctuate. I too have extra skin but I doubt that it will disappear since I'm 60. This post is just a celebration that I have finally made it!

I feel the same way you do about maintaining my goals of keeping weight off and how difficult, but yet how rewarding it can be to be able to do this for an extended period of time. Over time I have learned to trust myself and I don't count calories with the Spark People tracker as often as I should, but over the years I've learned what foods I should eat to maintain so it becomes that lifestyle that is just like putting on your shoes every day. We all get to that point, but I feel we must never forget were we started. Have a positive day! emoticon for sharing with us! emoticon emoticon

I hit my highest adult weight in 2008 when I was 230 pounds. By April 2010 I had dropped to 160-165 but struggled with maintenance, and by last fall was back to 210. I'm now down to 158 and targeting 155 as my maintenance weight.

I've been maintaining for about six months now, and I've been a team member (lurker) for a bit longer than that, so it's probably time I introduce myself. I had a wakeup call when a doctor appointment in January of 2013 revealed my weight had crept up to around 175 pounds. I'm 5'8", so I'd just edged into an overweight BMI for the first time in my life, and I was horrified.

I wasn't sure how I was going to do it, but I set a goal to get back to my "normal" weight (around 150, right in the middle of the "healthy" BMI range) within the year. I joined a gym, with mixed results. A couple of months later I remembered SparkPeople, where I'd briefly been a member back in 2008. Suddenly everything clicked! I was able to clean up my diet, I made sure I was eating enough each day, and I learned how to make the most of my workouts. By October I'd dropped to 12 pounds lower than my initial goal weight without even trying, and I've been maintaining between 140 and 145 ever since. (Hitting the 130s kind of scared me; I can't remember ever weighing that little.)

The links from this spark team and all of the motivational blog posts I've read from the team messages have been so helpful during my maintenance! Thanks to everyone here I've learned so much about maintenance, and no longer feel so alone in my efforts. Here's to another 6+ months of success!

I have weighed 150 twice in my life when I delivered and a few years ago (about 3). I was 135-138 last year around Jan to May, after being 127 in the fall.

I am now in running between 116-120 and want to stay closer to 116 and love being back here. I was this weight in my 20's and early 30's. I am 46 now.

Hi! I'm Erika from Chicago and I at one time weighed as much as 230 lbs. I reached my goal weight (lost 90 lbs) on April 16, 2013 (I'm rounding in on my one year maintenance anniversary). I did it by major lifestyle changes in the form of a total diet overhaul and also running (hence the username).

I've kept it off by continuing on with those food and exercise habits. I'm much happier and more confident now as a fitter person and I'm super enthusiastic about spreading the word about how I lost and how it is totally achievable!

hi everyone! well this is my story 'i have try a million diets for 29 yrs then 4 yrs ago i founnd my way with diet and alot of exersize and lost 108 pounds ! i became the mass state queen for 2011 with tops {to diet sensibly] which was amazing ! kept the weight off for 2 yrs and working on three ! i have been having alot of trouble since dec. 2013 and jan gained alittle weight but still in lee way i want to get back to where i was so far ive been doing real good but starving and not because i am not eating but because i have a bottomless pit for a stomach! so far i got 4 off ! its a start!

Hi,
I joined SparkPeople in November after changing my eating habits starting back in October 2011. Over the years I've lost about 75 pounds and have been at maintenance since April, 2013. I am finding that reading about nutrition and other people's experiences is very helpful to me on my maintenance journey.

This weight loss journey has been very different in that I didn't "go on a diet," rather I decided to change my eating to focus on eating heathier. I posted an intro if anyone wants to read it.

Most of my adult life, I was 5'3' and weighed 115 pounds, and never had any issues with overeating. However, I developed some food allergies, and had to go on a strict diet with no white sugar, flour, preservatives, and eliminating and rotating allergic foods back into my diet. During that time of about 10 years, I got down to 107 but mostly maintaining at 112. When my allergy shots started working, I started enjoying food and eating whatever I wanted and binge eating at times. My highest weight was about 2 years ago, where I got up to 145 pounds. I stopped eating so many of my chocolates used for rewards for my students, and was maintaining an overweight BMI of 141 pounds for another year. This year, I have been eating mostly clean and unprocessed foods due to having some food sensitivities come back, and slowly lost 4 pounds since Jan. 1st. I am trying to eat about 90% clean with 10% treats, which has been working since I eat moderate portions. I need to lose about 10 pounds to get to my happy weight and joined the team since there seems to be helpful topics, supportive people and challenges that will spur me on to my goal.

Back in 1966, my 5'2" frame had 150 lbs. hanging on it. One day my husband read an article about a weight-loss group in our town and suggested I go to it. I did and in a year managed to get off 40 lbs. by living on 900 calories a day. As you can imagine, I was hungry all the time and slowly but surely I gained back 10 lbs. I spent the next several years on the usual yo-yo, until I found Sparkpeople in 2007 and learned about changing my lifestyle completely to a more healthy attitude toward food and exercise. I've stayed at my goal weight for 6 years now by keeping records of my food, exercise, water, sleep and energy level on the Sparkpeople trackers. Being part of this team has really encouraged me. Hi! I'm jumping in here a bit early. My first and main goal is to get my BMI under 25. At yesterday's weigh-in, at 70.7, I have one kilo to go. I want to get a bit lower than that to give myself some wiggle room.

Until about 40, I was average weight for my height - about 63 kilos and 5' 6". I went up to a high of 86 by 50. My mother had a stroke, which was a wakeup call, and I went down to 76. Three years later, I was back up to 83. Then my husband had a stroke. Another wakeup call. This time I got down to 69 in two years and stayed there for two years. I was back at 76 last summer. I didn't want to re-visit the 80s, and I joined Spark in October. I'm 63 years old and I want to get my weight under 70 kilos and stay there.
Watermellen recommends this as a great group. emoticon

Hi, my name is Margaret, and I'm just transitioning to maintenance. I started when I joined Sparkpeople almost a year ago because I got sick of feeling fat and unhealthy. Since then, my goal has been to lose at 1-2 pounds a week. Even though there were weeks that I didn't reach that goal, I've lost 50 pounds since then! I use Sparkpeople to track my food and balance my fat, carbs, and protein, and I use a Fitbit to track my workouts and how many calories I should eat in a day.

When I first bought my Fitbit, my goal was to eat 1,000 calories less than my anticipated burn, but never less than 1,200. The Fitbit predicted a 2 lb loss a week at that rate. I've now set it to lose 1.5 lbs a week, which gives me 250 more calories to eat a day. Right now, I'm just trying to figure out how to balance fats, carbs, and protein within that range. Once I'm used to that, my plan is to gradually reduce it to 1 lb, then .5 lbs.

Anyway, my hope for this group is to get more support from people who are maintaining and to share my struggles and successes with people who understand!

I lost 30 pounds and hit my goal in April of last year. I have maintained a healthy lifestyle and ended up losing about 7 more pounds. I feel good and am a lot more aware of how I feel mentally and physically.

At 145 lbs I'm still five pounds from my goal of 140. I'm also half of my former self - my highest recorded weight was 291 lbs. I joined SparkPeople in September 2012 and it has changed my life. I look forward to educating myself about maintenance here and am grateful that this team exists.

Started a healthier lifestyle back in December 2012 (at 253) and reached my goal weight (175) a few weeks ago. Now am in maintenance mode. Hopefully this group can help me in adjusting.

I'm trying to mostly add healthy calories (fruits, whole grains, and lean proteins) to what I had been eating when I was in weight loss mode. But I am enjoying the occasional treat (keeping the portion size reasonable of course). Also keeping my exercising the same (mainly because I feel SO GOOD after an invigorzting workout!)

I began my journey at 317lbs and on January 2, 2013, I had a vertical sleeve gastrectomy. One year later, I have lost 147lbs and am about 10lbs away from goal. My surgeon told me I do not need to lose any more but I ultimately would like to hit a normal BMI (even if it's only for a day).

I joined this group to get helpful tips and hints on maintenance so I am prepared. This is the scariest part of the journey for me!

HI everyone. I lost 85 lbs and reached my goal Jan 2012. Since then I maintained for over a year, then started slipping. I remember reading about those who "fell off the wagon" and I never thought that would be me. I tried to get back on, but only half heartedly. I couldn't figure out the new motivation. So while I am not maintaining right now. I need to get back on track. I want to be better prepared to maintain. Any tips, stories to share, would be much appreciated. THanks!

Once you get to your happy range it's not the number on the scale but the number on the calendar that becomes your goal and your badge of honor. And as a team we like to acknowledge when folks hit their anniversary milestones.

Hello Everyone! My name is Dawn and I reached my goal weight last week :) I'll apologize now for the long post haha it's basically my Goal Weight Blog from my Spark page but it tells my story.

The Numbers

I can’t believe I’m sitting here typing out these words,” I’ve hit my goal weight”. When I stepped on the scale this morning I had to recheck it…FIVE times! Haha! I’ve been overweight since 1st grade. It was a role I felt I’d have my entire life, the fat friend. Binge eating was my…correction , IS my “illness”. I blew up to 293lbs because I’d binge on food daily. I’d eat not until I was satisfied but until I was BEYOND stuffed. And once that full feeling went away I’d eat more. I never knew what feeling hungry felt like anymore because I never gave myself the chance to be hungry. I never got any exercise--I’d go to work and then come home and take a nap. Every single day. My body ached--knees, back, feet. I had horrible stomach issues and felt tired all the time. My weight was causing physical pain but also emotional pain.

When friends and I would go to the mall it’d always bother me that they’d be able to shop anywhere and buy all these cute clothes. Then they’d swap and share outfits while I had to go to the “big girl” stores and spend twice as much on an outfit that was honestly old lady-ish. I remember when the store Torrid came to our mall-- I was so excited to have a store with adorable clothes that were more fitting for my age! But it was usually pretty costly. I just wanted to be able to go into any store and buy an outfit. I was a size 22 pants, XXL shirt, and always had to buy wide shoes. I struggled with depression for a few years and I’ll be honest--it was pretty bad. I needed a change. I wasn’t happy with where my life was going. I wasn’t healthy. Before I knew it my 22’s were starting to feel snug. No way was I going up another size. I decided this is it. I NEED to get healthy. I need
to feel good physically and emotionally.

I signed up on Sparkpeople.com and started tracking my food and exercise. I worked the fast food and soda out of my diet. Worked in more fruits, veggies, and lean proteins. I have a major sweet tooth so cutting down on chocolate, especially peanut m&ms, was difficult. I began walking around the lake near my house, starting off with 1-2miles. I tried my best to keep on track. I never took any before pictures or measurements because, honestly, I didn’t think I’d stick to it. I thought for sure I’d give up just like all the other diet plans I tried in the past. But after seeing a loss on the scale, clothes feeling loose, and just an overall better feeling--I realized this was it. I’m doing it and it’s paying off. I just needed to find a plan that worked for me. I love food, I mean who doesn’t? haha So calorie counting let me have what I wanted but taught me moderation. It helped me not to binge. Every once in awhile I’d fall off the wagon and binge like the old days.I still struggle with that but I’m nowhere near as bad as I used to be. I’ve learned that if I lose control one day then I just need to brush off and get back on track the next day. NEVER let one bad day turn into a bad week…month. Just move on from it. Learn from it.

Now here I am-- 138lbs lighter. My knees and back don’t hurt like they used to. I have more energy and I can share clothes with friends! Haha! I average about 5miles a day (5-6x a week), I RAN a 5k, & I can get through the Insanity workout dvds without having to stop because I was exhausted or because my knees were in so much pain. My body is so much stronger inside and out. I could seriously go on forever with everything that has changed in my life from the physical to the emotional to my personality and how I handle things in life. I never thought I’d be here. Never. If you want something bad enough, you will get it. You just have to keep trying, keep pushing yourself. Treat this not as a diet but a lifestyle change. A diet is temporary--138lbs is life changing. I want to maintain this healthy lifestyle forever. I never want to lose this feeling of….LIVING.
Calorie counting and exercise did it for me. So find a way that works for YOU. I know you can do it! All you have to do is take that first step!

I know that when I start to stray into the high calorie zone - it helps to know that I'm going to have to 'fess up on the daily check in the next morning so ... this forum really helps keep me on track.

Believe me, it's taken me a long time to develop the confidence to believe that I could not only lose the weight, but actually keep it off because of having failed so many times in the past. There are so many inspiring stories here and a lot to be learned from our veteran maintainers.
