I remember a woman who used to stop at the Giant (local grocery store) every night for a few things for her family after work, and she always bought one Hershey kiss. Just one. The cost rounded up to 1 cent. She said that after the tumult of kids and dinner, she would lie down on her bed with the door closed, and place the one candy on her tongue and let it melt. It was 15 minutes of bliss. If she had another one available she'd eat it, so she always only bought one. I am always amazed at people's creativity in handling a problem that formerly baffled them.

Wow, Nell, you put it so well. It is seeing the temptations, recognizing them and having a different attitude. I use to think once I had "sinned" via food, I may as well eat all of whatever chocolate or carb has me in its clutches. Last night I wanted a taste of chocolate. I have a Hershey's dark chocolate bar in the frig (I got 2 at Christmas, one is gone. ) I took one square, was satisfied, didn't feel ugly or stupid, but wise about portions!

Nell, keep up the good effort! I recognized myself in your story -- in my case, it was Twix bars! After another year or two of healthy eating, they will lose their hold on you. And it's really true -- if you stay away from sweets long enough, they will lose their appeal!
Best to you,

CarolJean: I DO think of myself as a fat person in a thin body. I can be walking down the aisle at the grocery store and out of the corner of my eye I will catch a Reeses and zero in on it. I won't buy it anymore, but I smile and remember that while my initial instincts haven't changed, my reactions to them have. My sister, always thin, never even sees food she doesn't want to eat. Way back when I was losing I had to use other techniques to walk past certain things (a cell phone would have been nice if they'd been invented then), and every little bag of pretzels or cheetos was an internal battle. Now it is a personal amusement, an indicator of how far I've come. I can't really talk about it to normal people, they'd think I was nuts.

Welcome and congratulations. Maintenance is believing in and forgiving yourself in the same way you have done during your weight loss phase. Keep active and remember you are not a fat person hiding in a svelte body!

Hi, welcome and congratulations. All the best for starting your healthy lifestyle with Sparkpeople, that's what stops the yo-yoing, trust me, I was a great yo-yoer.

Welcome! I completely agree that maintaining is a whole new ball game. Congratulations on your weight loss -- that is fantastic and worth the effort to maintain.

Glad to have you here Nicole! There is nothing like regular contact with maintainers to make sure you never get complacent. Stay close! You'll help me as much as you help yourself.

Hi everyone! My name is Nicole and I'm new to the team...actually, I'm fairly new to Sparkpeople too! I've struggled with my weight my entire life. I've lost and gained...and lost and gained over and over. It's time to break the cycle and finally live a healthy life! I've lost 109 pounds since December 1, 2008. I certainly know how to lose the weight because I've done it so many times, but the struggle for me now is learning how to maintain my progress.
