Emily, after a certain point the number on the scale has much less meaning. My lowest weight was 119, now my average weight is 124, but the same pants still fit me comfortably. I'm really working on not letting the number get me down, because I know I am doing everything right.

It was so good to find out that most people in this group fluctuate. That made me feel so much better...like I wasn't trying to fight my weight all the time. I'd like to fluctuate at a slightly lower range so that I'm comfortably in a size 4. But ya know, I'm striving to eat better and do more cardio. If I'm doing that, then I can't be picky about a couple of pounds!

Like most people here, my weight fluctuates wildly from day to day between 122 and 125. I actually reset my target weight 3-4 pounds higher than my original goal because I just couldn't get back to it. I don't think it's because I gained any fat, because my clothes still fit. It's just my body adjusting, perhaps gaining a little muscle. I also started using the google tool and love it.

I give myself a 5 lb. range with the middle number being my goal weight. I think this is normal. I notice that when I eat meals with a lot of sodium, I retain water. My weight usually goes up then. I don't worry about my weight unless I am over my high number or at the high number for several days.

Thanks for the google15 link , it works, I'm 4 pounds higher than my goal weight, I'm training for the 10K and I'm diabetic, I'm trying to figure out the right calories to keep my goal weight, to keep my blood sugar without spike and to eat enough calories for the exercise. It's a work in progress... So all that said,in the last six months, my weight has gone up to 5 lbs and down to 0.5lbs the goal weight. Right now, I'm working to get it down again.

My weight is fluctuating about 3 or 4 pounds, so far I have only gone one pound over goal. I will be a happy camper if I can stay within that range. Losing one pound is a walk in the park compared to losing 50 or more.

I've been using the Igoogle tool as well, and it really is nice. It mediates the ups and downs, so you don't get crazy w/ a serious down number either. I know personally I can get a bit lax when my scale trends down, just as I get stressed when it trends up. I know it's really most likely water, and will even out eventually. but with the tracker I can see that I'm really holding steady (so far).

Mine flucuates, but when it goes over 160 (it goes from 160-162), I tend not to take it as a flucuation, as I should, but me gaining weight back.

Its been so nice to see that others fluctuate as much as 5 pounds like I do. Yesterday I was about 7 pounds up so I need to get back on track. I've been getting relaxed about my calorie intake and it is starting to catch up with me.
I give myself a range of 117-122. As long as I am somewhere in there, I am happy. Over Christmas, I went up to 128.5...lots of goodies :) I am now back to 123 and slowly losing the rest. I don't weight daily because I am not the type of person who can see those types of fluctuations and still remain sane. :)

My weight fluctuates no more than two pounds. I'm only five-feet-tall so if it goes beyond two pounds, I know it's weight gain and not water, salt, PMS or any other reason. That's my red light - the signal that tells me to take control.

My weight usually fluctuates between 3-5 lbs, it usually depends on my sodium consumption. I don't add salt to my foods but sometimes when I eat a frozen dinner, I will bloat because I don't eat those often and they are usually loaded with sodium. Then in a day or so, I'm back to normal.

5 pound fluctuations seems to be the most common. I would think it would only be a problem if it doesn't come back down after a few days, especially if you know you have not been paying attention to what you have been eating

Mine bounces around within a 3 - 5 pound range. I weigh myself daily, first thing in the morning, without clothes, after using the "facilities" and before eating or drinking any fluids. It is always under the same conditions. My weight can be up 2 lbs on one day and down 4 the next day. It is all artificial and probably related to everything that others have already mentioned. I don't worry about it as long as it is within the goal range and I don't see the "up" continuing.

There are only 3 reasons that your body can lose or gain weight.
1.) Water. You can retain water from sodium & MSG consumption. You can retain water from hormones (like during that time of the month.) And caffeine products can actually cause you to lose water.
2.) Fat. By eating more or less then you burn, you can gain or lose body fat.
3.) Lean Muscle. Something you should strive not to lose, but if you're not eating enough to faciliate muscle growth, you can lose it.
So...you're weight is probably going up and down from water retention. It's IMPOSSIBLE for your body to gain fat, unless you take in 3,500 more calories then you consume. This is why I only weigh every 30 days. If not, I'd get soooo mad. LoL.

I agree it is important to weigh yourself the same time every day.
I think women just tend to fluctuate more due to hormone issues! Four pounds can be water weight during certain times of the month...it is nothing I get too excited about.

The only time I fluctuate is when I eat large [buffet] meals and cut back on exercise. It's important to weigh same time. I can be up 2 lbs. but back down the next day. I weigh daily, officially only on Sun., I don't want 4 Lbs. to sneak up on me at the end of the week. Skeeter

You are going to fluctuate sometimes...that is normal for some of the reasons you mentioned...water, pms, etc. I usually fluctuate between 2-4 pounds!
