Laura,

Welcome to SP and the team. It is a bit quiet on the boards, but there are active members on SP in general. Motivation is a tricky thing. It is easy to find but hard to keep. I seem to lose big chunks when I find some motivation, but then I get stuck on a platue after losing it. Ive been stuck for almost a year now. I just keep trying and refuse to gain it back. One day at a time.

Those are good tips. On average, people lose more weight when they have a food journal or use the site to track what they eat and drink. I'm terrible when it comes to tracking my intake though. I'm working on it.

It sounds like you are already making some positive changes in your life. Way to go!

Welcome, Laura!

You've taken some good steps on your own and it sounds like the motivation for change is there. I know that thinking about doing something is a lot different than doing, though.

My advice to you would be to follow the ideas of the Spark. Make small changes and try to follow those changes as long as you can. Looking at the whole elephant can be daunting. Start small.

Work at your own level. I bicycle thousands of miles each year. So many people say they could never do that. Anyone can, but you have to start slow. I remember the days of going on short rides and being exhausted. Slowly, my endurance grew. Whatever it is that you like to do, start slow and you'll be surprised at how it will transform. Just as above...don't look at the whole elephant.

Log your calories! It's surprising how they add up. If I don't log, I overeat. Simple as that. Remember...calories in, calories out seems to be the best way to lose weight. Use the resourses on sparkpeople to educate yourself.

I hope some of my tips will help you get started. Good luck on your journey! You can do it!!

Peggy

...and then in the middle of everything, you realize you're alive right now, and the time to live is right now!

Hi y'all! I'm Laura from Tennessee, and I need some motivation and accountability. A combination of sedentary lifestyle, lazy food choices, and medication have caused me to gain a lot of weight over the past couple of years. Joining SparkPeople is my second step in the journey to weight loss and better health (the first step was visiting my doctor and getting switched off the "bad medicine" to an alternate plus a strong diuretic). I lost a lot of water weight, but still have a long way to go. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
