Hi I'm Cat, 34 year old mom of 4 and married for almost 12 years. I started TKD in January of this year and LOVE it. I started as my kids were in class and I hated sitting in the back watching so no pain no gain :)

I got my Yellow belt in March and am working on my Blue now. I haven't lost any weight :( although my pants definately fit looser and my body is more toned!

My TKD goal is to get my Black belt before I'm 40!

hi all, i'm james and i just started TKD about a month ago. have some health scares and finally starting to get into shape again. the more i learn about TKD and the philopsy behind it the more i fall in love with it . i will be increasing my TKD sessions and adding some weight training for strength, kickboxing ( aerobic) for stamina and yoga for flexibility. of course a good diet. i'm adding all these at a slow pace to help prevent getting hurt.

Hi all! I'm new to SP, just joining last week. I used to be in TKD...I was with the ATA Madison, WI. I had to get a new job, and move away, and now I'm unable to afford to go back for now. I was a purple belt when I competed last. Looking forward to being able to start up again....I miss it a lot!

Hello, everyone. My name is Diana, I am German- spanish and married to an American and we are stationed in Korea. I love Taekwondo. I just started and I will test for the first yellow belt 21 of September. I am nervous and excited. I so really think martial arts is great. I love my Korean Master..He has trained for 40 years but he is fit like a shoe. And I have never met a more supportive crowd in any of the other group exercises. Anjonghaseyo.Means hello in Korean.

Hi I'm Joanne. I have previously studied karate and earned my brown belt. Then did some TKD and was given the rank brown with 1 stripe, but hadn't learned the forms. Went back to the Karate, but now I'm back doing tkd. I'm madly learned the ITF forms before we start class next week, as I'm helping to teach. Looking forward to getting back into shape after taking 2 years off and having a second child.

Hi I'm Melissa! I've been in TKD for the last 11 years and I am a 3rd Dan. I'm hoping I will be testing for my 4th Dan next July. Before then I would like to get my extra weight off so I can really have the best kicks possible. I'm so happy to be part of this type of group - YAY!! emoticon

Hi there!
I'm new to Sparkpeople and new to Tae Kwon Do! My son (7) and I started a few weeks ago and I LOVE it! I never thought about doing the class myself and was interested in having my son start, when I met a few women that take the class with their children as well! So, I gave it a shot and was amazed how wonderful it makes me feel! POWERFUL! Hope to use Sparkpeople and TKD to reach my fitness goals and meet so great people along the way! :)

Hi, I just joined. As my name says, I am in Montana. I started TKD in February and love it. I weighed and measured at the beginning of March, then forgot about it. I measured again at the beginning of July when my clothes began to get loose. I was down ten pounds and had lost 9 inches across various body areas. Needless to say I am thrilled :) It's a good start nad still going!

I just joined. :) I restarted TKD this week because I finally found a great school in my area. I did TKD in high school and some of college, from 1998-2003. I made it to 1st Dan and life got in the way. I'm relearning everything after an 8 year hiatus and I couldn't be more excited!
Glad to find a team for my sport. Talk to you all soon!

Hi, I'm Colleen. I got my first dan in August 2008. I was hoping to get my second dan this past August, but couldn't because of a back injury.

I'm mostly healed up, and want to test for 2nd dan in about a year. I do NOT want to test at this weight; I will not test at this weight. After 13 pounds lost, I'm actually only 5 pounds heavier than I was when I tested for 1st dan, but I didn't feel at the top of my game then. Honestly, I felt best when I tested for 1st gup, and that was my lowest weight in adulthood.

I have set 2 big goals. The first is just to get to a healthy body fat percentage, and the second is to get into the middle of healthy body fat percentage range. I don't want to be living on the line between overweight and not forever.

I do not want to take my 2nd dan test until I've at least met the first goal. I HATE being an overweight black belt, and while I'm in good cardiovascular shape, I feel like I would look silly trying to take the second dan test because the weight affects my agility.

I'm Stephanie, I'm new to Sparkpeople, but I've been in Taekwondo for a little while now. :) My husband and I own and operate our own martial arts school in Washington State, and what an adventure it's been so far! Glad to see so many people who practice Taekwondo! It's changed my life for sure, it's so encouraging to see the positive effect it's had on all of you!! :D

Hello all,

I have been involved in tkd since high school and competed while in the army. I took a hiatus for a few years while having my two boys but want to get back into it. I am hoping to even start teaching at my local gym in a few months. I have a first degree black belt in ITF but have also received my kukkiwon and competed Olympic style. I am embarrassed to say I have a lot to relearn after five years of not training but i am ready! Spark people is helping me get back to my healthy weight and thought this group will help me stay on track

Hello, TKD group! It's wonderful to find other martial artists here. I started training in Tae Kwon Do in March of 2005. I'm in ITF (International Tae Kwon Do Federation). Our school is non-competitive, though we still do free sparring.

Just for reference, our ranking system goes: new student, white belt, yellow belt, green belt, high green (green with blue stripe), blue belt, high blue (blue with red stripe), red belt, high red (red with black stripe), and then black belt, of which there are 9 ranks. In our school, black belt is not awarded to students under the age of 18.

I am currently a high red belt, and I hope to test for 1st dan black belt in September of 2011 (my pre-evaluation to see if I'm ready to test will probably be in March 2011).

At any rate, the combination of being active in Tae Kwon Do AND being overweight makes me feel somewhat out of place in many weight loss communities and in the context of Tae Kwon Do. Ever since joining the club over 5 years ago, I have been quite physically active. I have found though that without watching what I eat, physical activity is simply not enough to control my weight. Do you all find this to be true as well?

Hi!! I'm new to SP, but not to TKD!! My husband and I own our own dojang in Texas, and I LOOOVE our TKD family! I love working out in class, but my knee has taken a bit of a beating lately, so for now I'm using the elliptical for cardio.

My husband is a 7th degree, and was an alternate for the Olympics in '88. Yes, I'm a proud wife! emoticon

Hi! I'm new to the team. My hubby, 2 sons (6 & 9), and I started TKD last fall, and we're currently camo belts.

I'm not new to SP -- been here for over 2 years -- but am now getting more involved in the SP teams. So I'll "see" you all around!

Hi everyone! I am actually the mom of a young martial artist, my 13 year old son is a state and national medalist, 12 time board breaking champion and he is currently a red belt. I attend alot of competitions with him as well as watch him in his classes 3-4 nights a week. Recently he has been teaching me some things, workouts on the bag and stuff to try to gain my health back. He is training hard right now and if all goes well will be in the jr olympic games this year. Look forward to meeting each of you!

I have been on kind of a hiatus too, although I have been trying to visit my teams whenever I get a notice in my email. My medical issues have been wonky and when they changed my meds about 2 months ago I put on a bunch of weight. UGH... Anyways - back to square 1 again...LOL!

I think TKD is one of those great activities that can be a sport, a hobby, or a pasttime. For my DH it is a sport, he enjoys tournaments and challenging himself. For me it is a way to get healthier and connect my mind, body, and spirit. For DD (13) it is more of a social hobby.

Hopefully your wife and kids will join in, even if for different reasons than yourself. Plus, since its go at your own pace - I can participate even though I am over-scheduled because if I miss a few classes - I'm not holding anyone else back but myself.

Good luck at testing next week!! Gotta run - have a great afternoon :)

Just me right now! My oldest daughter has done a couple of classes and shows some interest. My wife just picks on me in fun asking when I am going to go do "Kung Fu Panda" She has stated that she wants to learn sometimes. It is just going to be a while b/c she is going to school to be an RN. Mary(my wife) is going to go to my testing next week though and then she can see how it really is.

New to team and to TKD. I have been practicing for about 8 mos. I have been married for 12.5 years and have 4 kids. I love to train and enjoy teaching my kids (when they are interested.) I am testing next week for my yellow/green stripe belt next Sat. I am also thinking about doing a tournament on April 24 in forms and sparring(maybe also breaks)

thanks,
Ken

So far everyone wears the same "unisex" student uniforms. They want them to all look the same, sigh. I've looked through the Century catalog and I haven't found any others that are big enough for me there either. So - that's part of my incentive is to look good in my dobok!

Good luck at the testing - how exciting! My DD (who's 13) received her black just over a year ago. She hasn't mid-termed yet though. She's being the fickle teenager these days...LOL!

I hear that! I am having a hard time finding a dobok that fits properly at all. They are all cut for men, which doesn't allow for my hips...LOL Right now I am having to buy a size 10 for the jacket and wear different pants with it. UGH!

We are students of Songahm TaeKwonDo (ATA).

Let's see... DH and DD have been in for about 3 1/2 years. DH is getting ready to test for his 2nd degree Black this month, and DD is readying for her first mid-term after getting her 1st degree Black.

I started about a year after they did and am currently a brown belt, after taking a year off for medical reasons.

It keeps us busy, but we enjoy it...LOL... healthier than sitting around watching tv all evening like we used to...LOL!

It's very nice to meet you! The classes are in French...that's interesting! LOL... I only took a semester of French in HS, but I bet that makes you learn in a hurry. Hmmmmm... Well if you ever visit paris, you will know enough TKD words to warn someone if they try to mug you...LOL!!

Hi all

I'm a 39 yr old mum, living in Switzerland, who took up TKD about a year ago to keep my son company. He dropped out after a few months, but I love it! My club belongs to the Swiss World Taekwondo Federation, and our belts run: white, yellow, yellow tag, green, green tag, blue, blue tag, red, red tag, black.

I'm green tag at the moment (they let me skip the yellows at my first test, as I have a karate brown belt from my teenage years), and working towards testing for my blue in early summer.

Our club has a nice mix of little kids, super-fit youngsters (some of whom are on the Swiss national team) and a clump of elderly parents like myself. I go usually twice a week, and it's a work-out for both body and mind, as the classes are in French! Apart from the bits in Korean, of course...

Looking forward to getting to know people on this board.

Hi everyone,
I just joined, I started TKD at 50 ( 1 years ago), my DoJang is Simba and we are traditional TKD, I am a green tip, soon to be testing for my green belt. I love the workout, just wished there were more classes, we are a small house.

Hi Crystalwolf,

World TKD Federation..Olympic Style TKD...Yeah I started when I was 46 and didn't really know where it would take me...but now 4 1/2 years later...I am ready to turn it up a notch. It's a great sport!

Hi Maureen!
Which organization are you in? We have people from a few different "schools" here on this team. My family is in ATA (Songahm) TaeKwonDo. DD and DH have been practicing for a little over 3 years, and I have been in about 2. I always laugh that I joined TKD at 30 something and 300 lbs! But I'm still in it because I love it :)

Anyways - welcome!!

I was (and still am) pleasantly surprised by how supportive the kids can be to an "old fat lady" LOL! They all seem very helpful and genuinely interested in helping others better themselves.

It irks me when people talk about how bad kids are these days. Yeah, there are some bad eggs, but most of the kids I know have alot of integrity.

We had a Judge from our county come be a guest judge at one of our testings. We have about 100 students and about 3/4 of them are kids. He said he was pleased to say that he didn't recognize any of our students from his courtroom :) We loved that!

Ours is WTF, and the belts go: white, yellow, orange, green, blue, high blue, purple, high purple, red, high red, brown, high brown, recommended black, black (1st Dan). I'll test for yellow in April. My daughter will test for 2nd Dan in Oct 2011.

I'm very overweight and out of shape, but even the teens in class have been very supportive and helpful. I still feel awkward out there, but I feel awkward everywhere. ;)

Welcome everyone!
What Organization are you in? Since the belt systems are different sometimes it's nice to understand.

I am a brown recommended belt in the ATA, and our belts go White, Orange, Yellow, Camo, Green, Purple, Blue, Brown, Red, Black. My DH is a Recommended 2nd Degree, and my DD is a 1st Degree and is just getting ready for her 1st mid-term.

I joined TKD at 31, partially disabled, and 300 lbs, so I am a very non-traditional student. But luckily our school is very diverse, and I have a great instructor. DH and DD had been in for about a year and a half before they finally convinced me to join.

We spend alot of time at our dojang also. We have our own classes on M & W and then we teach at another school that they own on T & Th. We have a very family-friendly school, and we have met alot of great people there.

Hi, I'm Jenn. I joined SP this week, and I've been doing TKD since the end of December. My teenage daughter is 1st Dan, and after all these years of watching from the sidelines, my husband and I decided it would be more fun to be out on the floor. Most of our family's social life revolves around the dojang and friends we've made there, and almost all of the adults in our circle are also taking TKD, so there's a lot of support.

In addition to TKD, I'm also getting to the Y several times a week for cardio and strength training. I've gone from essentially zero exercise to working out five days a week within the course of a month!

Hi I'm Marie. I wrote another post in this forum but I thought I would go ahead and introduce myself under this topic too.

I am 38 years old, married with no children. I work in health care.

I was really board with the gym and didn't ever want to go. So I said to my husband why don't we go over to the Martial ARts place nearby? So we did and on June 18 2009 we started our Tae Kwon Do study.

We are now both yellow belts. I just got mine on Tuesday night. My husband got his the previous Friday. (I couldn't test that day because I had to work)

I really love it. Testing is hard work and i get nervous but I can't wait to learn more and move up.

Hi!

Thought I'd introduce myself here, I just joined this team yesterday. I'm 32 yrs old and live in Finland. I have been practising taekwondo quite a few years, but tore my ACL last April (in sparring practise...), so now I'm on a break from practising, trying to rehabilitate the knee (had the operation in May). I hope to continue with taekwondo in January.

I hope to get rid of some extra pounds, some of which have crept on me after the injury and some that have been sitting there forever. Looking forward to "meeting" you all!

That is really awesome! One of the great things about it is - my boys are 12 (almost 13) and 14 (almost 15). Occasionally they will take the adult class with us when they have conflicts in their schedules. They think it is fun to train with us. They are teenagers and hang out with their parents - this makes me happy.

Hi my name is Laura and my two boys are both black belts in Tae Kwon Do. One of them will be going for his second degree in a few months. At one of their testings we saw an older woman testing for black belt. That gave both of us the push to try it for ourselves. My husband and I train together and we are both Red belts after 2 1/2 years - probably at least another year before black belt. I am 47 years old and can't believe I actually do this. I am 1 of two women in the class. The other one is 20 years old. Sometimes sparring is intimidating to me but I try my hardest at all that we do in the class. I always aim to do my personal best. One thing I really need to work more on is my flexibility. If anyone has any great suggestions I will listen. The best part about sparring is when my husband and I have a bit of a disagreement - then I get to sparr him in class LOL!

Hi, everyone! My name's Megan. I just joined SP today after watching my mom lose over 30 lbs in the last few months. I lost 50lbs on my own a few years ago and have since gained back 20. I'm 21 and have been in TKD for just over a year. I'll be testing for my High-blue belt in 3 weeks, I know many clubs have different color levels so it's probably easier to say it will be my 8th belt level and Black is 11. I hope to compete in my first tournament in October and looking forward to it! Nice to meet you all! :-)

Blessings,
Megan S.

Hi! My name is Angela and I am 36. I started TKD about 3 years ago after watching both of my kids enjoy it so much. There are only a few adults that train and it took a while to get of the fear of looking "silly". I am now 1st gup and hope to test for my BB later this year. My son (13) is a junior BB and my daughter (8) has a Little Dragon BB (started when she was 4) and just received her red belt (3rd gup).

75 miles one way... now THAT'S dedication. between my two kids, my wife and myself taking class, we are at our TKD center literally 5 nights a week and its a strain. We only live about a mile from our school though!

Welcome to the SP-TKD team!!!

Hi everyone!I just started SP 10 days ago and was checking around when I found this team.I am from Saskatchewan, Canada and am a 1st dan BB.I was supposed to test for my 1.1 this June, but had surgery this spring and that has put a crimp in my activity level. In fact I just started exercising again 2wks ago.We are a WTF school and my daughter is a Jr. BB who is an active competitor.I can't wait to get back to class again aand get back into the flow of things.I originally started TKD 20 yrs. ago before I got pregnant with my son.I advanced 3 belt levels and then didn't train again until 5 yrs. ago when I started with my daughter. We drive 75 miles one way 3 times/week for her to attend class and I felt I should be doing something while I was there also. It's great. We have a blast. The long drives give us a chance to talk about things I don't think most 14 yr.olds talk to their moms about.TKD gives us such balance in our lives and the focus and dedication it requires is teaching both my daughter and I valuable life skills. My husband and son support us in TKD but don't take it themselves.I'm glad I found you guys.

Hi from St. Louis MO! I have been training in TKD for over 10 years. We train in Chung Do Kwan (Blue Wave) style. My instructor, Ray Amanat, was taught by Fred Wren, who was taught by Alan Steen, who was taught by Jhoon Rhee, the founder of American Tae Kwon Do, so we are a very old fashion style of school (non-Olympic non-sport). I have been a black belt for 4 years and teaching for closer to 6 (its part of our black belt requirements). One of the good things about being in martial arts is we know how to train hard. I started with a personal trainer at the gym and he was surprised that my heart rate was so low and my recovery was so fast. I pointed out that when you spar 3 minute rounds with a 30 second rest for an hour, it will build your endurance!

Hi Everyone! I am the ultimate newbie here. I really know nothing about TKD but am eager to learn. I signed my 5 year old son up for TKD classes last month and it inspired me to sign myself up. I've always found the martial arts fascinating and have wanted to give it a try for many years. I'm 37 now and I figure no time like the present! I look forward to learning from you all.

Hi, Cee! Sounds like you're really going to have earned that 3rd dan when you get it. Yeesh!

We used to get new belts for each dan, but my instructor decided he really likes the look of the really worn black belts at his karate dojo, so he has decided that we'll just have the original stripe cut off and the new ones added.

Hi you two and welcome to the team!!

Cee: wow that's a long journey, but all this sickness and time away just makes you stronger! Your getting another belt when you reach 3rd Dan??? ...that's what it sounds like. For our 3rd Dan, they take your original BB belt and add a gold stripe. When someone hits 4th Dan, they are given a full tittle of Master, one of our Masters have the tittle (he'll be a 5th Dan in a year).

Hi. I am Cee. I've been working out with my TKD dojong for ten years. I am currently a 2nd Dan, planning to test for my 3rd in March. It's been a long, hard road to get there.

My original test date was August, 2006. I was burned by hot great April of the same year, and I was out of action. In 2007, I had a hysterectomy. Last month, I had a rotator cuff surgery. I am still pre testing in December, with my eyes still on my same belt that has been on the wall waiting for me.

In a few years, I will have the same hunger for my 4th, my Jr. Masters Belt. The up and down of life is parallel with my travel in TKD. I respect the art as much as anything I have worked hard for.

Hello everyone! I joined this team last night and thought I'd come in and introduce myself. I am a 34 year old wife and mother of three boys. My boys are Jon (14), Ian (9) and Raiden (4). We live in Oklahoma. I began taking TKD this year in March after watching my son (Ian) for two months and wishing I was doing what he was doing... so I decided to do just that. After my being in for a month my husband also joined and makes it to class when work allows. I am currently a green belt, and my husband and son are yellow belts w/2 green stripes. Being a stay at home Mom, TKD is a great time to get out and SOCIALIZE... as well as get a great workout and learn a beautiful art. It has done so much for me... made me so much more confident in myself. I love it. So there it is... not much more to tell! Thanks for the opportunity to join!

Amy

Hi Bullet,
Oh yes, I missed it very much. Much more than I even imagined I would. Time and money were the two things holding me back, but now I'm in a good place in my life.
Some things have changed since I left, but my body is starting to "remember" some of my kicks and blocks. It is a great workout!
I'm about 45lbs heavier this time, so it is a bit challenging, but I hope that will not hinder me from my goal.

Hi everyone! I just joined sparkpeople.com yesterday and I am excited to see what all it has to offer.

This is my second time taking TKD. I was a purple senior in highschool, then I married and funds were very low for a while so I stopped for about 4 years. Now I am a teacher and I am able to go to class once again. I had to start back over at white belt, but I do not mind because I think I am learning more this time- I'm not in a "rush" to test and move on to another belt. I am just enjoying the road to my black belt. I am currently a green belt and I hope to test for my green senior rank in October.

Nice to meet you!
Tina

I recognize some familiar names here from the women's martial arts group. For those of you who don't already know me, I guess I should introduce myself.

I am a recently divorced mother of 3, and my children and I are all black belts in TKD. My sons (12 & 15) and I are due to get our 2nd degrees by the end of the year. My daughter (9) just got her 1st in December. I also have a great boyfriend who is also a black belt in TKD due to test for 2nd Dan near the end of the year.

I am looking forward to getting to know everyone in the group!

Sherry

Hi - my name is Karen, and I'm a IV Dan in Ch'ang H'on TKD. We started in the USTF/ITF, but left in the mid-90s to form our own association. I'm trying to get into better shape and lose weight in case my sahbum tells me to test for V Dan (the earliest would be in 11/09) - I sprained my knee testing for IV Dan 2/05, and it never really recovered, so I've been working with a trainer to strengthen it, and to help lose the weight I gained when I couldn't walk well for several months.... which, of course, isn't doing the knee any good at all.

I wondered why somebody didn't do something; then I realized I was somebody! - unknown

Hi, mimi4ga! Welcome to the team! I *wish* I had started tkd in 1984! Heck, I wanted to start in 1974 but my parents wouldn't pay for it. :-( What is ITU?

Hi, new to the team.

Well I joined sparks to lose about 10 pounds so I can get back into shape for competition.

I started TKD in 1984 (Not a typo). Received my 1st black belt in 1988 with USTA (Now WTF) I also hold a 1st degree black belt with ITU. I've do a little Krav-Maga and have been grappling. I currently have a 4th degree black belt with ATA. I became a certified instructor in 2001 and taught full time until 2007.

I've competed seriously since 2001. I've decided to take this year off. I'm getting really burnt out & money is tight. (I now have a daughter in college! So she gets any left overs.)

Trying to go to class as a student and not an instructor has proven to be very difficult. I find my self helping others and not focusing on myself.

I don't get to class as often as I would like, I guess my life has been a little busy.....

Only perfect practice makes perfect!

As has been said, there are lots of great benefits.
- Strengthening
- Toning
- Balance
- Flexibility
- Reflexes

These all translate into other things, too. I started martial arts in my mid-twenties, several years before I met my wife. When I was growing up, I was pretty bad at sports. I mean BAD. I've always been the classic nerd/geek, and I showed it in the field.
After several years of martial arts, my wife is amazed, and thinks I'm good at all kinds of sports (that I was terrible at before). As she was a college-level athlete, that's pretty pleasing, but I'm certain the only reason for me getting better at anything is because of martial arts.
Good luck, and also remember, if TKD isn't your thing, another style might be! :)

The fitness benefits are wonderful. If you check your fitness tracker you will see that it burns alot of calories - our classes are 40 minutes long and it burns 600 cals!

I also have trouble with my balance due to some bone deterioration, and my doctors told me the best way to combat this is to build muscle. Since starting classes last sept, my DH has noticed that I have made great strides in my balance and stamina. I did not have any major falls this winter!

For children, I think that martial arts are great. They help with confidence, discipline, and respect - as well as being a great source of exercise and an energy outlet!

PRAIRIEDAWNPAM: The one thing that got me when I read your post is: "I'm not sure if TKD will be "my thing". Try it before you say anything. Go ahead and do two months of it and see what you say. Having the entire family there will make it fun for all of you.

Welcome to everyone who is new!!

Fitness Benefits? OH MY! In just 2 short months of starting TKD, I have discovered sooo many benefits that I had not expected. I was looking to lose weight, have fun (did it 20 yrs ago), increase flexibility, and to tone up. I got that and more.

TKD works all major muscle groups, but not the same ones all the time. There is variety, at least in my studio. I have never had the same class done twice.

You get a good cardio workout (aka: burn lots of calories). I discovered that my muscles have toned up considerably. I was scratching my leg one day and felt my leg was hard...not squishy. I about fell out of my chair. I felt my arms, and they had toned up too. Another milestone: I could not do a forward roll in the beginning...now I do it with ease. I am not a runner by nature, but one day recently, we were lined up to warm up and did relay runs. I am slow, normally, and even during my thin days, I always felt like I ran through molasses. But something curious happened. I ran with more power & speed then I can ever recall. The molasses was gone.

But the proof is in the pudding. My stats tell me that I am 2% lower body fat then I was at this same weight many times over. I go to the TKD gym 3 days a week with my kids (DH only goes on Sat.). I am bummed when I cannot go. I just feel better.

Hi everyone

Hubby took me to visit a TKD school for the first time this evening. He trained for a year seven years ago before we met and before he had two consecutive work injuries. He wants to get back at it and he wants our three kids (14, 14 and 12) to try it, too.

So far I've been walking, using an elliptical trainer and weight lifting for exercise. I'm not sure if TKD will be "my thing" or not, but I didn't think I'd love weight lifting, either, so I'm willing to give it a try.

Can someone tell me the main fitness benefits? Will I burn calories? Gain muscle?

Hi,
I'm new to Sparkpeople (yesterday) and, since one of my big motivators is losing weight to improve in martial arts, I thought I should find a TKD team. I train in Connecticut and I am a high brown belt (there are three levels of red - about 18months worth - to go before black belt).

I'm 43 years old and I've been training for two years. I love it and I really want to get in my best shape. I need to defy gravity if I want o make those jumping kicks pretty. Losing weight will help with those physics.

I look forward to getting to know you all.

Deniraz - I like the belt rankings because once you get a new rank, they teach you new stuff. :-) For two years, I was almost always the only adult in classes. Now they've restructured the schedule and I often train with adults or older teens. But I almost never train with my son as a result.

However, today we started Kobudo classes together, and we were partnered the whole class (having exactly the same amount of no experience). That was fun. :-) It was nice to train with him again.

Thx Asriffe! My DH can only go to Saturday Family Class (which is in 45 minutes!!!), but my 2 boys REALLY are enjoying themselves. I have never been so motivated and excited (even tho I look like a dork doing the kicks and stuff). Most times I am the only adult in the early evening class. I don't care, its still fun! I get really bummed out when I can't make a class. I think the belt rankings is a really bonus to keep one motivated to improve and continue!!! Gotta get ready for my class now.

Deniraz - welcome to the team! That's great that your family does tkd together. My son and I train together (well, we used to, now he mostly goes to different classes). My daughter decided it wasn't her thing. :-(

New to SP. I took TKD in my early 20's for about 1 1/2 yrs and loved every minute of it. I got to a Blue belt ready to test for my Red (wht, ylw, grn, blue, red, brwn, blk), but had decided I wasn't quite ready. At this time, I got divorced and went to College. I could no longer afford my membership or time to practice as I was a full-time student supporting myself through college. So I had to quit. Fast forward over 20 yrs later. I am out of shape, inflexible, but still in love with TKD. My family and I joined last month and have been doing 3 kick*ss workouts a week. I am starting over as a white belt.

Welcome to the group Kenny. Congrads on all the accomplishments during the years, quit smoking as #1. My uncle was talking about smoking yesterday. One uncle smokes and the other doesn't. Uncle Tony who doesn't he was stopped by my dad. U. Tony lit one up one day, my dad saw it and smacked his face and taking the cig. with it. That's the day he quit. My other Uncle, he smoked during work, so my dad was too late to stop him.

Hi, Kenny, and welcome to the team! Congratulations on stopping smoking! I've heard it's one of the toughest things a person can do.

Hi everyone.
My name is Kenny and I am a second degree black belt at the North Asheville academy of Taekwondo in Asheville, North Carolina.
I am a trainee instructor (red collar) and hope to meet the qualifications for the black certified instructor's collar by Christmas.
I began taking TKD in January of 2002 at the age of 40. I was out of shape and a long-time cigarette smoker. I was also pretty unhappy with myself.
By the time I reached yellow belt (7th grade in the ATA) the change was already beginning. I quit smoking and got a haircut for the first time in three years. As for being happy with myself, I don't know if that will ever happen. There's always more to learn and more to do so I will always be, as the song says, "hopeful yet discontent".
I look forward to getting to know you all and being part of your journey, as you will be part of mine.

Today not possible, tomorrow possible. Eternal Grandmaster H.U. Lee Founder, American Taekwondo Association.
